High ISO or Push The RAW File? (ACR/LR has a problem here!!)

This topic has been discussed numerous times.
Should you shoot with high ISO or can you just push the exposure in your RAW converter?
What looks better?
What has more noise?
I tested. Nikon D300, shot inside, crappy tungsten light. Each scene I shot with a higher ISO and with the same aperture and shutter speed one stop lower ISO.
For instance:
- f/4, 1/80s, ISO800
- f/4, 1/80s, ISO1600
Now I went in ACR 5.2 and pushed the lower ISO shot 1 stop. Noise Reduction all off.
Here are the results:
- In ACR pushing 1 stop isn't enough. You need to push somewhat around 1.3 stops
- The color shifts in the pushed shot - more saturation, more contrast. Wood for instance gets significantly redder.
- Noise stays virtually the same!
Hmmm. So what would Nikon Capture NX 2 do? Again, NR all off.
That's what happens:
- Pushing 1 stop is enough. It does exactly what you'd expect.
- Color stays exactly the same.
- Noise stays exactly the same.
The shots are virtually indistinguishable!!
So what about 2 stops?!
The exact same results. The "problem" in ACR magnifies, you need to push around 2.6 to get there and saturation and contrast shift significantly now, to an extent where clipping and blocking happens.
Capture NX on the other hand again works flawlessly. No difference between ISO 1600 and ISO 400 pushed 2 stops. Noise? The same. Shadows? The same. Colors? The same.
Shadows don't get lost any more in an underexposed shot that's pushed 2 stops than they are in a shot with ISO two stops higher!
Very interesting. So with NX you could probably shoot the whole evening on ISO 200 and then push it later. Unfortunately NX can only go +2 stops ...
Last comment here:
Adobe need to do some homework here. A lot that is. The non linear increase of exposure, the shift in color and saturation and also the severe, blocky color noise that ACR/LR show in very high ISO shots are way below what we can expect.
Do you trust me or do I need to post the shots?
Cheers!

Jeff Schewe says:
"Of course I don't trust you ..."
Sorry, it took me a while, but here are the shots. Initially I did a more sloppy handheld test but I wanted to do it right and now used a tripod and cropped exactly.
http://www.gg-images.us/misc/isovsev
The image names show the ISO, if it says -1 or -2 it means it was 1 or 2 stops underexposed and then pushed accordingly in the RAW converters.
The RAW files are at http://www.gg-images.us/misc/isovsev/raw
Lee Jay says:
"The "exposure" slider in LR/Camera Raw isn't a pure raw*2^exposure, and this is quite intentional."
And why is this so? And what is the intention?
Gordon McKinney says:
"And remember, the camera does an electronic amplification "push" of exposure on the sensor. It should perform better than software since it provide the A/D converts more signal to work with. ..."
The results from Capture NX look as if the software is doing just as good as the in-camera "push" that high ISO does.

  • I down loaded ACR 6.7 for CS5 so that the raw files for Nikon D800 would work. But they still don't open

What else do I have to do so the raw files will open in bridge?

Well, it says I already have the most recent version. However Google Plus still says my version is out of date.
A friend suggested I back up my bookmarks, then try uninstalling & reinstalling Firefox the traditional way, and rebooting my system afterwards.
I'm going to try that to see if there is some kind of other issue going on between Google Plus and all of the websites that say my browser is out of date (ie. version 3.5) when it is not.
    Thanks!
ps. I did try what you suggested, and that's where I found out my browser version is current.

  • I can't open the RAW files from my new Nikon D4s camera in photoshop? How do I download the latest software for RAW files?

I can't open the RAW files from my new Nikon D4s camera in photoshop? How do I download the latest software for RAW files? Cheers!

What version of Photoshop are you running?  You will need at CS5, CS6, CC or CC2014.  Each version needs a different ACR-plug-in to open files from that camera.
If you are on CS4 or earlier, you'll need to upgrade—or, in the alternative; look for, download, instal, launch and run the free, stand-alone DNG Converter 8.6 on each file of raw NEF files to convert them to raw DNGs first so you can open them in your version of Photoshop and ACR plug-in higher than 2.4.

  • Why are my actions not processing the RAW files correctly?

For starters, I have to say the CS4 has been one of the most unreliable software packages I've ever used.  It's a beta version.  Adobe is making Microsoft look good these days.  I was extorted into upgrading from CS3 because Adobe chose not to create a RAW plug-in for CS3 that would open Canon 5D Mark II files. They wanted the revenue.
I'm an engineer and am pretty good with computer problems, but after spending hours simply trying to install the CS4 upgrade over CS3 on a fairly new, very fast Windows machine with no other software installed by me, I gave up.  It took 3 hours on the phone with an Adobe tech to get it running (more or less) properly.  CS4 still freezes up about once a day on that system, losing whatever the latest changes I've made by the time I finally get it closed and restarted  Then a month ago I bought a new, fast Windows laptop.  I only installed CS4 and Word on that computer (with all the latest patches and RAW plug-ins).  It's biggest problem is in processing RAW files.  I have an action that works fine on my other systems that I wrote from scratch on the new laptop.  All the action does is open a RAW file as a PSD file, resize it, convert to sRGB, change the mode to 8 bits, sharpen it, and save it as a JPG.  But the resulting JPG does not look like the RAW file from which it was made--color, brightness, contrast, etc. are all significantly changed.  When I get back from an assignment and transfer the same RAW files to my other computer on which CS4 is installed and run the same action, the JPGs come out perfectly.  Once again, Adobe has met my low expectations.  Any ideas on what the problem is?

Sounds like you're a candidate for Lightroom...based on the time you don't
    want to spend in Photoshop.
Photoshop install media is likely created in large batches, perhaps in a
foreign country, so it's understandable that you get Photoshop 11.0.0 is on
    the media.
I don't know as I would use ProPhotoRGB as my working space in Photoshop.  I
was merely suggesting that you look at your color settings to make sure
things were the same on both machines.
How do you know your actions are the same?  Did you copy the action
recording from one computer to the other, or did you merely record the same
steps on each one?  Have you compared the details of each action step in the
Actions Palette to make sure they are the same?  The symptoms still sound
like something different than sRGB being the output color-space, or the fact
it isn't embedded on one or the other of the computers.
How are you viewing the JPG when it looks the same or different than the
RAW?  Are you looking at the side-by-side in Photoshop, or side-by-side in
Bridge, or are you using a mixture of viewers, one Adobe, and one not?  And
are you using the Canon Codec on Vista or not?  The Canon Codec would be
showing the camera-preview in the RAW not the RAW adjustments that Adobe has
    done.
While the OS shouldn't be causing a difference in how the action is run, a
difference between OSes may make a difference in the processing to show up.
The camera profile associated with a RAW file is visible in the
third-from-right tab in ACR over at the right.  The one with the little
    DSLR-camera icon on the tab.
Can you attach the two JPGs on a reply, here, or if not, upload a ZIP of the
two JPGs and the RAW to a file-sharing site like http://www.rapidshare.com/
    and post the download link(s)?

You're welcome!  It's usually CS5 and below that has the ACR update problems.

  • Elements 10 can not read the raw-files from my Sony a-57

The raw-converter is updatet to 6.7 and according to Adobe it should be able to read Sony a-57. When I got Elements 10, a file had to be moved so it could read the raw-files from my Minolta 5D. Can this be the cause of the problem ? What to do ?

  • From LR 4, can't get control + E to successfully push the raw image to PS CS6.

I just downloaded PS CS6 and LR 4 to both my desktop and laptop. From LR, I use control + E to push the raw image over the PS CS6 and it works on my laptop but *not* on my desktop. I have LR 4.1 and also camera raw 7.1 on both my laptop and desktop so I'm updated.
For some reason on my laptop I'm able to successfully use control + E to push the raw image to CS6 and it opens sucessfully but *not* on my desktop. When I do this on my desktop it just opens PS CS6 but that's it. The raw image never appears.
I've made sure that the LR 4 preferences setttings are the same on both my laptop and desktop. I've even rebooted. I've googled everything I know and still no luck. Any other suggestions? Thank you for any help!!

Until someone more familiar with this particular issue jumps in to help out...
Even though the setting reads correct in in the preferences pane, I'm still suspicious that something behind the scenes is broken about that relationship.  Did you at one time have Photoshop CS6 beta installed?  Is there any other reason (installing/uninstalling, etc) that could explain a broken link to PS6?
I'm tempted to ask you reinstall LR4.1 to try to get it to rebuild the link.  It would be pretty painless, and it wouldn't break any of your existing images or catalogs.
If you feel like tinkering instead, one way to test might be to manually add PS6 again as the "Additional External Editor" in the lower half of the same preferences window.  Click the "choose" button and delve down to the executable PS6 file.  See if using this second linking magically starts to work for you.

  • Just bought a Nikon d750 and confused about adobe LR4 and PS6 support for the RAW files. I have DNG 8.7 but wondering if LR and PS will import direct soon Thanks for any advice

Just bought a Nikon d750 and confused about adobe LR4 and PS6 support for the RAW files. I have DNG 8.7 but wondering if LR and PS will import direct soon Thanks for any advice

Support for the Nikon D750 was introduced in the latest version of LR 5.7 and ACR 8.7 on Novemder 18th 2014.
Further updates to LR 4 were stopped when LR 5 was released on June 9th 2013. No further updates for bug fixes and new camera support.
Nada, LR 4 will never support Nikon D750. The Nikon D750 was introduced into the market in September 2014 some 15 months after further development of LR 4 was discontinued.
You can use the Adobe DNG program (free download for the package) to convert the Nef (raw) files from your Nikon D750 to the Adobe DNG format which will permit you to import those into LR 4. This is the crutch provided by Adobe to allow for the processing of raw files with outdated versions of LR and ACR.
You can also update the ACR plugin for PS CS6 to version 8.7 which can also work with the raw files from the D750. For direct support in Lightroom you will need to upgrade (paid) to version 5.7.

    Hi,
Currently there is no LR version available for Compaibility for Nikon D750,
However there is the Beta version available for ACR 8.7, this should support the RAW files of the Nikon D750
    - Download Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw 8.7 Beta - Adobe Labs
    - http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2014/10/1366.html
Or use the Camera Software to Convert to DNG or TIFF, that should work as well.
    Hope this helps.

  • HT3825 so how do you convert the raw files to jpeg in iphoto?

how do you convert the raw files to jpeg in iphoto?

    Many thanks Barbara and dj_paige.
What I didn't mention is that I'm using PSE 5 with ACR 4.6, if its relevant.  I'm thinking of updating to the next version when its out in the hope that it will run with Windows 7 64 bit or I may go to Lightroom.
I can now see that I can batch convert a whole folder of files using "process multiple files" as dj_paige suggested but that is too many at once as the settings I choose won't be relevant for all the pics in the folder.
I was hoping to batch convert say 5 or 6 similar photos at a time with the same settings. I'm not quite clear what you're suggesting but I'm hoping that its a "work round" using two stages to achieve this.
I can't see a list of open files within ACR to ensure that they are all selected as you suggest.
What does clicking Open rather than Done mean?  Does this amend the original RAW file to the settings selected so that if I then "process multiple files" on the whole folder to convert from RAW to JPEG they will in fact have already been processed in smaller groups so I can convert without applying any further changes?
If so, what settings should I apply to "process multiple files" to ensure a simple conversion of file type rather than any further adjustments?
Any further help on this would be much appreciated.

  • Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Bridge does not recognize the raw files from my Canon Mark III 5D Camera.

Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Bridge does not recognize the raw files from my new Canon Mark III 5D Camera.  How can I get my files open to view and edit?  I am using LR3, Photoshop CS3 and Bridge CS3.  Do I need to upgrade these programs or is there another way to get these programs to recognize my files?
When I try opening the raw images in Lightroom, the thumbnails say "Preview unavailable for this file"  ... when I click "import" an error message pops up that says "The files are from a camera which is not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom."
When I try opening the raw images in Photoshop, an error message pops up saying "could not complete your request because photoshop does not recognize this type of file."
When I try opening the raw images in Bridge, it just shows an icon with the file name and CR2.
    Please help!!!

Unless I missed an announcement, today, LR6 isn't available, yet, right?  Only Adobe employees and beta testers would know what LR6 does differently at this point and they're all sworn to secrecy.
LR5 is available as a standalone version.
    PS-CS6 is available as a serial-number-licensed version.
PS-CC + LR5 are also available as a Photography Plan subscription for $10/month with a minimum OS versions of OSX 10.7 (and probably 10.8, soon) and Windows 7.
Bridge is part of PS, not a separate program.
LR5 standalone and LR+PS-CC plan are both available on this page:  http://www.adobe.com/products/catalog/software.html
PS-CS6 can be found on this page:  Creative Suite 6 which can be found by searching www.adobe.com for Photoshop CS6 and clicking the Buy link in the on-the-fly search results.
As with any new Adobe software, it might be wise to run it in trial mode for a few days/weeks to see if it works well with your computer, before purchasing and finding out you might need a new computer, first.
