High kernel_task RAM Usage in Yosemite 10.10.1

Hello All,
No matter what I'm running, I always have high RAM usage with kernel_task. I've looked around the other threads and never found a definitive solution. I wouldn't call it crippling to my system but I would like to resolve the issue. Below is a screenshot of my activity monitor, and my Etrecheck run. Please let me know anything I can do to reduce the RAM usage of this process.
Problem description:
High kernel_task RAM Usage (800MB - 1.5GB)

  • MacBook Pro very high overall RAM usage

Hi, I'm using a late 2012 13" MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM and a dual core i7 and I've been experiencing very high RAM usage for the last couple of weeks even though I'm not really doing anything. Here's a activity monitor screenshot
As you can see I'm only really using Chrome and Sublime Text (3). Twitter and Outlook are also open but don't take up that much (Twitter maybe but that just seems to be badly optimised and it's all gone when I close it).
    So, is this normal?
    Thanks in a

This is normal. The two most important things in that screenshot are 'Swap Used' (0 means you never ran out of RAM) and the Memory Pressure graph (everything green = good). For the rest the OS knows to handle RAM,

  • High unexplained ram usage by jvm on linux

I am experiencing the following issue.
I have a java server app on a very busy server, running many threads during high load periods (up to a couple thousands, I know I have to switch to nio).
The heap size is set with a max of 2GB, and never goes above that.
I also use some direct memory buffers, which at any time take a max of 3.5GB (imposed by app). The maxdirectmem is set to 7GB to avoid out of mem, but it never reaches that far.
I assume the app itself would take about 1GB max.
This gives a total of 6.5GB used, which is what I see a couple hours after server starts up.
Now, after a couple days, I realize that the app starts taking a huge amount of ram space.
The result of pmap shows a 15GB private space, which definitely tells that something is up.
    mapped: 15301724K writeable/private: 14957284K shared: 2784K
As a result, my fs cache gets ridiculously small, and the server is struggling.
The different reasons I can think of are:
    1) the high number of threads being allocated take a lot of memory. But this seems to be ruled out since a server just restarted shows almost as many threads, but does not have high memory usage. The threads are stored in a threadpool.
    2) the direct buffers dont get released, java lets app use up to the max 7GB before trying to give any mem back to the OS. That would be really annoying for me, because reducing the size means risk of out of mem. Plus it would be a stupid design. I am currently testing with a max of 5GB, see if it helps.
    3) somehow the hotspot JIT compilation feature, or some other jvm feature, takes too much ram.
I am trying to analyze the pmap output to understand what takes it all.
There is no big item that stands out, but I see many many lines like the following:

etc...There are like 10k lines like these, and they all get added in the private mapping of the process.
Does anyone know what that memory is used for?
Is there any java tool I can attach to a running process that would give me a complete view of the memory (not just the heap).
This is kind of related to the followind thread that never got answered:

    thanks in advance

When looking at the pmap, i see one big 2GB anon mapping before the end of libraries mapping:
    00002aaaadfe0000 2048000 rwx-- 00002aaaadfe0000 000:00000   [ anon ]I assume this is the heap area, and it's fine.
The problematic part I think is the 10k lines I see after the last library mapping, each of them taking 1-2MB or more of space.

  • High "kernel_task" Memory Usage

    Hello All,
I am in need of help.  I have a MBP w/Retina from August 2012.  It has worked beautifully until a couple of weeks ago (I think maybe when I installed Mavericks), and it then started to slow down considerably.
I have noticed high memory usage by "kernel_task" but have no idea what that is.
See the attached picture to give you the idea.  Please help me to get my MBP w/Retina back to being awesome again.
    Much appreciated.

hit the command spacebar and see if the spotlight is reindexing.

Did you try rebooting your computer?

  • Is there a documented correlation between high CPU/RAM usage and poor system performance?

I realize this subject is not black and white and has quite a bit of depth to it as high usage of either the CPU or RAM does not necessarily mean that a computer is running slowly.
However, is there any documentation, scientific research or academic journal that makes a correlation between poor system performance and the consumption of system resources.
It goes without saying that if you use all your RAM then there won't be any available for additional programs, but can this be substantiated with metrical data?

  • High Kernel_task CPU usage when charging

    Hey,
When I put my adapter in my macbook to charge i have a high cpu usage(500-650%).
When I switch back to the battery then after 10sec - 30sec my kernel_task go back to normal 2%cpu usage.
And then when I had 1 high CPU usage my Fans of my macbook won't turn off even if i have 2% cpu usage.
I have a early 2011 macbook pro 15" with standard Lion installed AMD Radeon 6490M version.
I tried the 2 resets and that didnt worked tried to reinstall worked for 1 week and then it came back.
I hope somebody can help me.

Changing the mother board is the best way to go for the simple reason that the Mac laptops are a very integrated system. Swapping out components on the motherboard would take very skilled people and they get paid large amounts of money. Apple technicians cannot do the job. Swapping out the MB is the most cost effective way.
For Apple, that motherboard is very inexpensive. The labor to swap it as a complete unit is by far the cheapest way for Apple rather than diagnosing and swapping out individual components. If you have ever done any surface mount component replacement this would not be hard to see.

  • HT1338 High Kernel_Task memory usage

I am running a Macbook pro (mid 2012) with mountain lion.
The Kernel task memory takes between 800mb and 1.4gigs of ram.
    Is this normal?
    Thank you

    Hi William,
Thank you for your reply. I have 8 gig of ram. I was concerned because i performed a complete restore from time machine from my old mac using the Apple migration assistant and maybe dragged some non-optimum stuff accross. I've checked the kernel extensions etc. and all seems to be in order.
    Thanks again

All these threads, tons of other users with the same problem, similar threads on other forums. Please, any solutions? How do you get Apple to hear something like this?

  • Kernel_task high RAM usage

    Hi everybody,
I have same problem on both iMacs i use (iMac9,1 and iMac10,1). Both updated from Maveriks to Yosemite some months ago and since last 2 weeks kernel_task "eat" to much RAM.
I tried to solve with all kind of resets, move files from ACPI_SMC _PlatformPlugin.kext, hardware test, reinstall and restore from time machine and finaly also with a complete clean reinstall (without TM restore!). But kernel_task run with too much RAM usage.
I feel frustrated and I seem to be back like Windows users!
So, i think problem could be associated to some software upgrade (DropBox? Skype? Osx update? don't know). Anyone knows if there are usefull debugs system log for kernel_task usage?

On this report kernel_task ram is not displayed but you can see it on task manager image
    Any help is apreciated.
    Thank you!

There is nothing wrong with your kernel_task memory usage.  It is consistent with the amount of RAM you have installed.
The kernel_task manages virtual memory page tables.  The more RAM the the more table space consumed.  800MB memory usage for kernel_task is in line with having 8GB of RAM in your Mac.
My 16GB Macbook Pro kernel_task has 1.15GB of memory.  People with 32GB Macs, have more like 1.5GB.  And Macs with 4GB have something around 500MB more or less.
Tangent observation.  Unless you have a Paid LogMeIn account, the free version has been discontinued, and you should most likely remove the LogMeIn components via the LogMeIn uninstaller.  Your use of TeamViewer.com is a good substitute for the free LogMeIn.
You system has been up for just 7 and a half hours
        OS X 10.10.2 (14C109) - Time since boot: 7:21:25
    But you have
        117.96 GB    Page-ins
That averages out to 4.6MB per second.
Chances are you could either benefit from not running as many concurrent things (maybe remove the large number of kernel extensions, launch daemons, launch agents you have installed), maybe only run VirtualBox when you really need to run Windows (assuming it is Windows, but I guess it could be Linux or Solaris X86), or have fewer tabs open in your web browser, or run fewer Apps, especially the big memory hungry kind)
Or maybe you just need more RAM if you must have all these things installed and running all the time.
Just a thought.  But it is not kernel_task that is causing problems.  That is normal.

  • High RAM usage when system is 'idle' (EtreCheck)

    Hey guys,
First timer here. Ok here's my question :
I recently bought a secondhand Macbook pro 15 inch. For me it's a huge upgrade coming from a 2009 13 inch Macbook pro. Because a friend of mine wants to buy my old one I was doing some diagnostics on the 13 inch, which has 4 GB of RAM, and found out it had a lot of inactive RAM usage and wired usage, almost 2 GB, due to a lot of launchdaemons etc which were hogging the RAM. I used terminal to kill these agents and deamons and now that system is running smooth again. Maybe it's wise to mention that the 13 inch runs on ML.
3 days ago I did a clean Yosemite install on the 15 inch, swapped the HDD for a SSD. And already the activity monitor shows a whopping 4,28 GB of RAM usage while I'm typing this with just safari open. I thought I could do the same trick as I did with my 13 inch but it didn't help, had some java deamons and helpers and deleted those. In terminal I looked up everything via launchctl list and there's nothing unusual going on as far as I can see. I had VirtualBox for one day but uninstalled it using their uninstaller. I have no clue what's eating all this RAM.  Please help me out so I can be a proud owner of my second macbook for atleast 5 years to come. Thanks in advance.

The page outs indicate the OS has not recently swapped any memory to disk.
Apple made changes to 10.9 that are the same on 10.10. Memory will be used as much as possible. It is the fastest storage on the system, keeping it free is a waste of your time - data loads fastest from RAM.
    This is a good explanation…
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/10/os-x-10-9/17/#compressed-memory
The system also frees 'cache' memory when another process has more need to use it. Eventually it will swap to disk (which is slow) so the OS also compresses memory before swapping is needed.
Please avoid killing launchd jobs, many will simply restart or relaunch again later. Eventually you may kill one that hangs the OS & corrupts the disk via a forced shutdown.
I do suspect you may see issues when RAM does get low, but there is no evidence of that here. The memory pressure graph will show red when swapping - every other colour is fine. Wait until you see red & then note the top memory users.
If you don't want java installed you need to find removal instructions & get it all off the system, simply stopping the update checks will leave Java in an old state - terrible for security.
Also do you know what 'Live' is? It crashed recently, if it keeps doing that it may be worth a look, however it may just be one if the things that was effects by the killing spree

  • MSI GE70 2OE, high ram usage problem

    Hey,
when i start my notebook everything goes fast and runs normal. but after a few Min's working with notebook my RAM usage goes up to 95-97%, and everything goes slow.
not running any special programs that can use so much RAM. and can't find anything in Task Manager what it could be.
    Normal RAM usage:
    High RAM usage:
can anyone help me with this? thx

I'm currently trying to help my friend with this issue... But worse.
He had the same issue happen to him. Brand new GE70, got it like a week ago. RAM maxed out, but task manager didn't show anything near that much being used by individual processes. Shortly after he said this he also said the disk usage had gone up to 99% or something similar.
The laptop became completely unresponsive and he had to do a hard reset - but it won't boot up anymore. Just flashes the MSI logo for a moment. Once it got to a screen that said "preparing automatic repair" for a second or two before shutting off again.
Tried EC resets, no dice. Got him to burn a copy of hiren's boot cd to try and run a disk check, it didn't even get to checking the drive. Now the power button doesn't even light up.
He's spoken to MSI support, they said to send it in... But he's got some data on there he needs and can't exactly get on to recover it. It's a real pickle.
So... uh... make sure you have backups.

  • [SOLVED] Arch64 high RAM usage...

I recently installed Arch64 on my MacBook and everything works fine, however I noticed its using very much RAM in comparison to my 32 bit workstation system (which has 4GB, not all seen o/c in 32 bit, while my laptop has only 2GB). Right now, with only X, musca, firefox and 3 urxvt terms open its using about 25% of it. which comes down to about 500MB. I didn't mind that much until just now I've seen it going up to 64% after I've launched matlab and it remained at this number after I closed it. My system is still responsive and fast, but I'm afraid I'm running out of RAM quite fast this way...thus if this cannot be explained or fixed I'm forced to go back to Arch32.
Is anybody else experiencing this ? I'm running kernel version 2.6.33.4-1 btw, and xorg 1.7.6-3.
Last edited by geniuz (2010-05-18 21:32:40)

    Unused RAM is wasted RAM.
And firefox is KNOWN to be a memory grubby hog.
Let the kernel do it's job. Unless you are specifically having issues(100% ram usages and high swap usage) there is little to worry about.
Also relating to Arch32 v Arch64.64 has a larger memory address(64 against 32) apps will use more RAM.

  • Mid-2012 MBA Battery Life + High RAM Usage

    I recently purchased the lastest mid-2012 base model MBA brand new, factory sealed from eBay and started using it a few days ago. Overall its a great machine, however there were two things that were slightly bothering me;
    1) Although the battery life is decent (around 5.5- 6 hours), on the system report page (see pic 1) , it said it only had 6128 mAh of charge remaining at 99%, even though the full battery capacity was 6527 mAh. Does this mean the battery capacity has already decreased after just 3 cyles or is this normal with lithium ion batteries? However, I don't know if this matters, but the place where I'm from suffers from frequent power cuts so I had charged the computer on a sine wave inverter a couple of times (AC current line). Could this have affected it in anyway?
    2) The computer had shipped with OS X 10.8 and I upgraded to 10.8.2 the same day I started using it. While the computer doesn't feel sluggish at all (well, tbh I haven't run any heavy programs yet), even with very few of apps open, the RAM usage is very high (see pic 2)- It says I am using 2.92 GB of RAM, and have just 1.07 GB of free RAM. Is this a common problem in with ML? I was planning to install VMWare and CS6 but now I'm not too sure judging by the amount of free RAM I have atm. What should I do about it?
    Pic 1
    Pic 2
Would highly appreciate if any of you guys could help me out here. Thanks in advance !

I'm at 1.02 GB of wired RAM on a completely "naked" boot of OS X. I've got zero 3rd party apps installed or set to launch it's all core services of the OS only. Oddly enough, my 13" rMBP is at 1.18 GB off the same basic boot on 10.8.2 so it'll vary a little.
I also find that with Mt. Lion the reporting is on "tape delay" as I jokingly call it. For example when I start up an application it'll use "x" RAM and then after 5-10 minutes of just idling it'll then level out at "y" RAM. Where you have to be watchful is on 3rd party applications that will sometimes just start consuming RAM like that's it sole purpose.
On a side note, I've been fooling around with a free application on the App Store called "Memory Clean" that's suppose to take previously allocated RAM and free it up. So far so good, it's especially handy after I run a handbrake job or play some World of Warcraft where a significant amount of RAM is used. Definitely not a required application, OS X by default is quite good at freeing up and reallocating RAM but sometimes it doesn't always get the job done if you need it right now (for a VM).
In your full charge capacity photo the machine is running on battery power, although at 99%. On my MBA I get almost 280 mAh of usage between 100% and 99% that right there would close the gap considerably.
On the subject of 3rd party applications, Coconut Battery (a free 3rd party application) has a handy tool that allows you to create data points on battery health. Might be worth exploring so you have a statistical representation of the battery's health if you're interested.

  • [SOLVED] high ram usage

    Hi !
I have the following problem . i 've installed kdemod3-base (the minimum edition) and when i boot the ram usage is about 300 mb ram . After a while , after using ktorrent or firefox my ram goes up to 950 mb and i have only 1 gb ram . this is what i get with ony konqueror open :

I hope you know that RAM is faster that HDD, so if you have a Ferrari (RAM) and a biiiig truck (HDD) and you want to drive really fast, which one will you pick? Sure, the truck can hold a ton (or rather several tons) of things, but it's not a speed daemon. If you have the Ferrari just standing in your driveway all day long you're not really using it right, right? On the other hand, if you use your sports car for everything but the toughest jobs (which require the truck), you can feel the performance you payed for - that's the cache thing.
No offense, but maybe sb knows if there's such a thing as manpages for dummies? ;-)

  • OSX Lion ram usage

Well, i've got my 13' Macbook Air today (4gb ram), and love it.
The only thing that bothers me is the extremely high ram usage of Lion, when i turn the Macbook on it jumps to about 1.3gb ram usage which i find really much considering my PC running Windows 7 uses less.
After some casual usage it even jumps up to about 2 gb ram usage.
Is this normal? how are the other Air's with only 2gb of ram handling this? there can't be much left there, besides just running the operating system.
i am new to Mac's so am i doing something wrong?

    Hi all,
After last Lion update a i seem to encounter a very strange situation regarding ram usage.
I have an early 13' mbp core i5 with 8gb of ram.
After upgrading to lion 10.7.1 i have less than 500mb available after just a few hours since i turn it on.
I must mention that the only running apps are: safari, mail, app store, ichat, ms excell and itunes.
Upon quitting excell, itunes, appstore and restarting mail and safari i still only get 1,5gb of free ram.
My suspicion is that there is another ram leak somewhere, or else i can't explain why my computer user 128mb of swap with 8gb of ram installed.
