High Pings in online gaming

I am having major ping issues with online gaming even playing on UK based servers it is jumpering constantly to the 700's range. I rang a pingtest.net and even that is showing a rating of D and saying that online gaming won't work. I download at between 600-900KB/s a second normally but online gaming is impossible atm.
Is there anything I can do?

it's not the servers as they are european based and everyone else has pings <200 so it is defiantly an issue with my connection as opposed to server side.
I've tried a tracert on bbc.co.uk and this looks way to high:

  • Low ping yet online gaming performs poorly

This has always been an issue with my BT ADSL connection. On paper it looks perfect for gaming; a solid ~23ms ping to UK servers (FastPath) with practically no jitter, a constant 4.5/0.25 mbps throughput yet online gaming (Xbox Live) shows way more lag than the ping figures would suggest, it's pretty poor.
Any suggestions as to why this could be? It's as if either my hardware (HomeHub4) or BTs network has a very low priority for gaming traffic (I game mainly during peak hours, as do most people I expect)
I'm currently testing a non BT router to see if the issue lies with the Home Hub. It's definitely looking better so far gaming wise (will need to test more though) but actual web browsing is noticeably slower with the same speedtest/ping results!?
All other hardware is removed from the network, cable to the Xbox has been swapped. Gaming performance is my primary concern and the BT connection is almost putting a stop my enjoyment of online play.
My exhange is Infinitiy enabled but my cabinet not and seemingly no way to find out when it will be.

The current BT homehub which is Homehub3 is a very poor router in my opinion but I dont have any issues with online gaming when my connection works correctly.
Can you go to http://speedtester.bt.com/ and do a speed test
    Also go http://192.168.1.254
then go to settings, advanced, broadband then connection and copy and paste the ADSL connection information here.

  • Random Disconetions and high ping during online games

I have had the same WRT120N for over a year now and it was working fine until a few weeks ago ,I play League of Legends a lot and lately during matches i get high ping and disconections at randome times even though i'm useing a ethernet connection to my desktop. I get 500ms ping and a message saying Ttrying to reconnect and it stays there for 30-50 seconds but when i open chrome the net works fine. I could really use some help here please.

    Hi,
Checking League of Legends' forums, you might want to check these links:

  • Infinity and online gaming

    Hello
I am relativly new to infinity and was wondering if anyone could tell me why its so bad for online gaming?
My download speeds are virtually always 37.5mb download and between 8 - 9mb upload although upload drops sometmimes to slightly lower
    http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/results.php?t=1333920063&v=15486878
    http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/results.php?t=1333920583&v=15486955
however i always get loads of lag when playing on xbox live, to the point it is not worth playing, it gets worse than when I was on normal copper wire broadband.
I have also noticed that there is quite a delay before web pages open when browsing the internet in general, my ping used to be pretty consistent at around 17 - 20ms before I switched to infininty but now seems to jump around lot even going as high as 300ms on occasion.
my line profile seems to have set at 38.10mb which I am happy with, and the engineer who installed my infinity said that my line stats were excellent.
all this said then why do i seem to be suffering when using xbox live??

    Hi Cameron
No I have been trying it with the wireless disabled, although on our old connection this wasnt an issues, myself and my son could both use our xboxs together on the one connection and still it was better than at presen
I didnt have the cable in the gigabyte port, I have now though, what does this port do?
Yes port forwarding set to xbox live

  • Is BT Infinity good for Online Gaming...?

I see many people on coming on complaining that they are getting many disconenctions, lag, high ping rates etc...which leads me to my question, Is BT Infinity good for online gaming?

I came to infinity from VirginMedia where jitter is awful and your TBB graph would be full of yellow! On infinity my jitter is pretty much non existent and latency is very low.

  • High Packet Loss, High Ping and Slow Connection Ov...

    Hi There,
I have been a customer with the BT unlimited broadband package for a little under two years and up until recently have had no real issues with the service. This was until around 3/4 weeks ago I noticed that the internet was very slow and certain online games or applications like Netflix would lose all of its quality or stop completely. At first I thought nothing of it and simply reset my BT Home hub router, and sure enough everything was back to normal. However after around 2-3 hours of moderate use (gaming online or watching Netflix) the problem surfaced again.
Now I am lucky if I can get the entire way through a 40 minute TV episode before the quality drops and/or the service requires buffering. I have already contacted BT via the helpline and the service lady ran through the obligatory steps (turn off, wait 5 minutes, reset the home hub etc.) but she failed to understand that although rebooting the home hub does alleviate the problem initially, the symptoms of a slow connection, high packet loss and high ping always return within an hour.
Four the last couple of weeks I have been trying to investigate the problem myself and I have done the following things:
Tested the line using the master socket (no difference)
Opened the ports on my firewall within the home hub (no difference)
Directly wired in the computer instead of relying on the wifi (no difference)
Tested for interference from neighbours wifi using inSSIDider office (it wasn’t, operating on different channels)
Switched every device that requires internet off apart from the PC (no difference)
So with all that in mind I am fairly confident that it is nothing within my house that has caused a significant reduction in internet quality.
Now I have tried my best to display the problem I am having by recording the connection quality for the last 24 hours. The table below represents the condition and quality of the connection after leaving it a period of time without resetting:

Thank you for you quick reply, I have just moved my hub to the master socket again and re-run the test and I seem to be getting the same results.

I have also checked if the bell wire was attached and it is not. My socket is of the new type with the inclusion of an inductor on the faceplate. My ADSL filters and modem cable already have the middle connecting pins removed so I don’t think it is a wiring problem, at least in my apartment anyway. I have also searched for problems with the exchange and they are showing green for my area. (Liverpool Central)
I have just rang the quiet line and I do not appear to have any noise on the line. However, all I have is a cordless phone and I know that is not ideal for determining noise due to the radio frequency interfering with the phone speaker.
Again thank you for you time on this issue.
    Regards,
    Richard

  • 4G online gaming doesnt work why? i need someone who actually cares to help me plse!!!

my modem is Pantech UML290     .i  notice cannot play any online games...my old 3g modem works perfectly with the same games but this new service as far as online games or this modem apparently has issues...i have had nothing but problems, high ping rates and packet loss as well as jitter and no one with the exception of 1 service tech apparently cares...they only care that you can connect and brows web to a degree....i have spoke to 8 techs only one cares and states their is a problem....i have tested this on speedtest.com upload and download speed is fast remarkably fast but inconsistant, the ping is terible and jitter and packet loss is even worse...i am going to try to replace the modem as last form of troubleshoooting, if that doesnt work then 4g can go in the trash until they resolve the problem....they advertise online gameing and video streaming for 4g...i cannot do online gaming will not even connect to game host due to high pings and data loss...and yet the new service wich is supposed to be much better and support online gaming doesnt work and my 3g device works without a problem, can play games all day long without i hitch and no one from tech can explain why....sounds like a problem..i have spoke with several people on forums they have all said the same thing....release tech and dontr know how to fix the problems....the response you will get is all we care about is that you can connect and view the web!!! wow so when i buy a car i guess all they care about is the car moves, they dont care if the ac worrks or anything else does to...thats the way its been explained to me time and time again...except for 1 tech...   the games that i have tried to play is BATTLEFIELD BAD COMPANY 2,     CALL OF DUTY MODERN WARFARE 2 ,  STARCRAFT 2,  noNE will work,  note been playing with old 3g device and service for over a yr with no problems!!  SOMEONE PLSE HELP!!!

I live out in the country and have no high speed internet so i bought the pantech UML290 and I have been able to play on the 4g network right out of the box. Plugin, install, and go. I Play Bad Company2 and my ping is usually 142. I connect to a chicago server from okc and my gameplay has improved so much more. I get 2 to 3 bars in my house and it flys on web pages.  I had the at@t lightning 3g and my pings on the same server were 185 but spiked up to 999 and back down to 180's . I love this UML290 and do not have Idea why you are having problems. I would return the uml and get another one. You might make sure the other communication software is uninstalled and worst case scenario, reformat the hard drive and start with a fresh install.  Can you give a description of your computer specs ?  Is this going through a cradlepoint router ? I would be happy to try to help, I know how much it sucks have a laggy gaming experience.

  • PANTECH UML290 DOESNT WORK FOR ONLINE GAMING PLSE HELP!!!

my modem is Pantech UML290     .i  notice cannot play any online games...my old 3g modem works perfectly with the same games but this new service as far as online games or this modem apparently has issues...i have had nothing but problems, high ping rates and packet loss as well as jitter and no one with the exception of 1 service tech apparently cares  TECH DID A PING TEST AT ADRESS  ping -a 66.174.92.14  result were request timed out 4 times, packets sent=4 packets recieved=0  pakets loss = 4 , total= 100% loss, funny thing is i was still connected to internet  and if you ping google.com 0 paket loss...  apparently consistancy or server recognition might be a problem i dont know...maybe modem is bad...either way i cannot play any online games what so ever, when tested at speed test.com and pingtest.com states high ping and high jitter as well as packet loss, no one seems to have an answer for this  note!! on old 3g device i had played these same online games without any problems...so this 4g modem and service advertises online gaming and steady streaming and i cannot do neither why???  someone plse help!!!  also if you look under vz access manager statistics tab, you will see transfer and recieve rates like a heart beat monitor....it consistantly goes up and down like a heart beat instead of a steady flow, goes up as high as 10mbs then drops for a while to 0kbs and stays their for a lil bit...it apparently is loosing communications....old 3g device was a steady transfer flow rate that never dropped to 0 unless i wasnt doing anything...so why is this as well?

have'nt had any phone call's today regarding the slow down of my BT infinity broadband line.. in the last 3 hours have been online on both the PS3 & the XBOX and the problem is still there... im host in every online game i play but each game is almost unplayable every time..the actual game i play as host on the PS3 runs really slow (only as host) and looking left/right has a blurry feel to it.. on the XBOX its running slightly quicker but still nowhere like it does on both consoles when im not hosting.. when ever everybody else hosts a game that i join, after speaking to them they have had no problem what so ever.. most seem to be on a cable ISP but the speed stats are very simular to mine.. just the hosting is totally different for me...???
    http://speedtest.net/result/1586999761.png
    http://www.pingtest.net/result/50309878.png
just tested my speed with the above score... i still cant work out why my line is being slowed down ....
just reiterate that my g/f works from home mon-fri 8am-5pm on a live server including emails etc... the live server would involve being logged on all day checking accounts including various stock levels etc.. so she is very busy pretty much every day..
im online with my PS3/XBOX prob a couple of nights a week plus as i do shift work,on my days off i play COD most of them days .. so prob around 40/50 hours a week playing online depending..
i chose option 2 BT Infinty unlimited because i new i needed a very good line with all mine and my g/fs needs..

  • High Pings and lag in games.

The problem I have is with gaming early in a morning and towards lunch time are usually fine and late a night into the early hours are usually ok aswell but as soon as peak times roll in my online play is impossible due to high pings and very bad lag, any idea what could be causing my problem please?
Steps I have taken to date, contact BT and was passed onto tier 2 tech support who then ran a noise check which last 24 hours on my line, which seems to have left my line with a higher noise value than before.
Tried a different ethernet cable, different micro filter, unplugged everything from the socket except for my Homehub 2, turned off my firewall and virus checker, reset my computer, closed all unused programs. Tried a friends Homehub 2, tried a laptop, all have the same result with high pings and lag in games.
Also BT quote my line speed should be an estimated 17MB.

  • BT Infinity 2 and high ping rate

I am having a problem with my BT Infinity2.  I am getting high ping rates some as high as 181 ms.  I have download speeds of 15 meg and 8-9 meg upload.  This is through the router wired to my computer.  I was told that I should be able to get somewhere in the region of 77 meg.  This is nowhere near and needs to be sorted out.
It doesn't matter what time of day I do the speed test it is always the same.  If I try and play my Football Manager 2012 game online I can't as my connection just kicks me back off the steam server.  If I try and watch a programme on Iplayer or ITV player ther programmes are fuzzy, blocking and unwatchable, also with the buffering is beyond a joke.

micksea173 not good and you have my sympathy
Try rebooting both the hub and the modem. Run the BT Speedtester to get your IP Profiles and  http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ to get an accurate speed test. Pings are very dependant on the site you are measuring a ping of 181 for a server in LA could be quite good! If you know how also run a tracert to bbc.co.uk. Post agin with the results and somebody can make an educated guess as to where the problem lies.

  • Very Slow Internet + High Ping

I am on a Sager laptop running Windows 7 and using an Airport Extreme Base Station as my router. I don't know how the router is set up or even how to access the router from my computer. My roommate set up the internet before I moved in. I have already contacted my internet provider and they believe my slow service + extremely high pings when I try to play any online game are a result of my router.
I am just looking for a way to correct my issue. I would also like to know how I can even access my router from my computer. Thanks.

+Is there any way for the owner of the device to limit the amount of bandwidth I am receiving??+
    No.
+but I really don't understand why my internet is so crummy.+
Interference from other wireless networks or cordless phones is usually the cause of issues like this. If you have a cordless phone there, turn it off for an hour or so to see if things improve. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about a neighbor's cordless phone causing problems or another wireless network.
+If I could access the utility what would you suggest I check?+
You can access AirPort Utility by going to the Downloads link on the main forum page. But, you won't be able to access any of the settings on the AirPort Extreme unless you have the device password, which is different than the wireless password. The first thing to do is try different channel settings for the wireless to see if you can find some clear airspace.

  • Having really high pings, packet loss and been on ...

Hi. I've been on to BT 4-5 times in the last few weeks. Everytime its the same thing I do all their checks and run the speed test. Its the same thing over and over. When i try to explain to them the problems i,m having they said your speed is within the acceptable range. I,m at a loss with dealing with BT. The customer server is terrible.
Basically the problems i,m having is really high pings. Even doing the BTwholesale speedtest my pings was usally in the 30ms range now they are 70 on average now. I play alot of online games. And Everything is unplayable. I know there is definitely something wrong. Either with the routing or some of the nodes on bt.
Today I was trying to play Diablo 3, the lag spikes was huge every 2-3 seconds jumping to 1-2k ms latency. I ran some winMTR tests and i,m having alot of packet loss. I tried to explain that to BT on the phone. But its like the dont have a clue what i,m talking about or wont attempt to help me with the issue. All game companies usally tell me ISPs are always willing to help with these problems. But BT seem to refuse to help with latency ping issues, just your speed is fine etc .
I,ve also noticed people in the BT forums saying something about G.INP and people needing HH5 Type B. Can someone explain to me what this is or if its something happening to my cabinate. I,m using the BT HH5 type A. From what i see the about the G.INP sounds like the issues i,m currently facing.
Can some Mod please help me. I,m really losing hope with BT.

    Hi Guys.
Still facing these issues. Is BT not going to do anything about it? Here is a WinMTR test to a game server i,m playing.

217.41.216.109 seems to be an issue with this. Getting packet loss of 7% and the the ping shoots up to almost 400 while the average is around 30.
I,ve tried everything BT have told me, i've phoned loads and loads of times to seek help. I dont know what else to do. Pings and latency is horrible. And i dont just mean little lag. Every online game is unplayable. Webpage loading slowing or broken images .

  • BT Infinity and online gaming - has BT changed tra...

We use our internet a great deal for online gaming and a few months ago on our old ISP games started to become unplayable due to extremely slow response times. After a great deal of investigation I discovered the reason for this...
Some ISPs examine the sort of data being transferred and when they think the data is Peer-To-Peer traffic they place this in a low-priority queue.  Historically, most people didn't care as 99% of P2P traffic was illegal file-sharing.
BUT, online games are increasingly making use of data packet formats that 'look' like P2P traffic.  The gaming data is incorrectly identified as being P2P file-sharing and placed in a low priority queue.  This makes online gaming, where responses need to be made in fractions of seconds impossible - you often just stand still for 5 seconds while the rest of the world moves on.
This is what happened with our old ISP and why we looked around for a new provider. Infinity recently came to our area and while browsing the Infinity information on the BT site I was asked if I wanted to speak to a customer service rep.  I wasn't expecting a very helpful discussion, but figured it couldn't do any harm to ask a very specific question:  "Do you perform traffic-shaping on P2P traffic?" -  the rep went away to find out and then responded "BT never shape P2P traffic".  (I have screenshots of this conversation as it formed the basis of my decision to subscribe to Infinity).
Flash forward a month.  We have Infinity and have been very pleased with it ..until tonight when the same problems started again.
Several speed-test sites report pings about 20ms, download speeds of 30-40mpbs  - all very nice, same it has been for the past month.
BUT, tonight all online gaming has ground to a halt.
Typical pings reported in games like World of Warcraft have gone from 50-100ms to about 3000-5000s.
Online chatter is FULL of people asking if anyone else is having problems; and yes, the ones I've spoken to are all on BT.
    So -
Have BT changed their policy ?
Are they now aggressively shaping traffic it thinks is P2P-related ?
Are the problems tonight related to a temporary glitch or a permanent change in policy ?
I'd really like to know as I've still got proof of BT's answer to a direct and specific question about this sort of policy and if it's changed will need to change ISPs and reclaim setup costs.
Any information from anyone who knows about this would be most welcome.

    Hi ge1971,
Welcome to the forums I'm sorry to hear of the problems you're having. I've posted an update on this issue here, so if you could keep an eye on that thread hopefully I'll have more info soon.

  • BT Infinity High Pings (eh .. I mean really High)

Greetings, Are BT Infinity witch is in the Lisburn Area is getting really high pings, slowing down the speed of are Broadband . I'd like to know whats going on right now? How is this even happening :s

Ignore it, is everything working as it should? Gaming, You tube(you said u Tube, must read posts more thoroughly), surfing, downloading?
    If yes then, enjoy.
If no, then reboot the openreach modem (power off) & do the same with your router for 5 mins, power on the modem ist, wait for the dsl light, power on the router (god forbid you're using a homehub.....half Jk ) & test again.
    Peace.

  • High Pings

I recently switched over to BT Infinity after experiencing high pings on Virgin's ADSL. My ping was typically over 70ms. Initially, on Infinity, my pings were as low as 10ms and up to around 30ms. However, more recently, my pings are averaging around 50ms. I read that interleaving could be automatically applied to the line when errors were detected on the line. My ip profile is around 40Mbps down and 10Mbps up. I achieve around 38 down and 8 up. Has interleaving been applied to my line? If so, how can this be remedied? I am not happy with this increase in latency especially as I purchased this product specifically for gaming purposes. Cheers

It comes and goes, you can't control it. Currently my line has no interleaving applied.
