High Processor and Fan Speed

Hi I've had my 17" MBP for a few months now...
Until recently all was well. And now all of a sudden it is just going hard all the time, like there is always a high fan speed, and the widget I have shows an unusual amount of processing power.
And I'm only using very basic applications.
So any help would be appreciated

have you tried a restart?
are there any processes using a large amount of cpu?
open you activity monitor (applications > utilities > activity monitor)
at the top, choose all processes
click on the CPU tab to sort by highest CPU
anything running a large amount of cpu?

  • Satellite R830-1GZ - CPU usage high ( 25%) and fan speed increase after wakeup

    Hello all
The CPU usage of my laptop shoots up to 25% (and beyond) and the fan speed increases dramatically after waking up, but only when I'm using an external mouse (Microsoft Natural Wireless Laser Mouse 6000) - disconnecting the mouse once this has happened does not solve the problem, so I'm always forced to restart my computer if I have let it go to sleep with the mouse connected.
I've noticed that when this happens System Interrupts - Deferred Procedure Calls and Interrupt Service Routines appears in the Resource monitor>CPU>Processes, and seems to explain the increase in CPU usage.
Any ideas on how to fix this would be most appreciated.
I'm using a Toshiba Satellite R830-1GZ with Windows 7 (64 bit). This problem does not happen when I use the same mouse with another laptop (Dell with Windows XP).
    Thank you very much.
    CM

    Thank you for your reply.
I was using the mouse without installing the software that came with it (IntelliPoint), which seems to have been necessary to obtain the latest driver. So I've installed the latest driver now, but... I've still come across the same high CPU usage problem after wakeup.
If your suspicion is correct, should disconnecting the mouse before putting the computer to sleep (hopefully allowing the process that controls the mouse to close properly) stop this problem from occurring when it wakes up?
Could this problem also occur due to an external keyboard? I'm pretty sure it's the mouse (given my experience of using only the external mouse and only the external keyboard) and my understanding is that keyboards don't require special drivers (at least the A4Tech one I have claims it doesn't)... just trying to exclude all possibilities.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • I have about 97% directoryservice cpu usage, 55% cpu usage, high temps and fan speeds with very minimal activity on my macbook, how can I resolve this?

Recently my computer has only been showing 42% idle when im doing absolutely nothing on the computer, i'll only be browsing the internet. Even when I shut down programs such as drop box, skype, itunes, etc. When I check activity monitor the only process that is using over 5% is directoryservice, and it is usually sitting between 90-99% usage. I downloaded istat which is showing my cpu temp at 77 degrees and fan at 4000 rpm. If I watch a youtube video it will kick into 6000 rpm. Please tell me how I can resolve this issue!! When I restart the macbook it seems to work for about 10-20 minutes where I can browse with ~90% idle and ~2000 rpm.

I discovered this issue independent of this thread, and can confirm that killing KiesWifiAgent will instantly take care of DirectoryService's high CPU load.  You'll also free up a bunch of memory.  On my MBP (8 GB RAM), Kies had leaked its way to consuming 1.5 GB of memory.

  • Video Chat causes high temps and fan speeds

My MBA 13 base model heats up very quickly while video chatting on gmail and the fans come one at about 7000rpm. Anyone else experience this? it drains the battery extremely fast. I use istat nano to monitor the mba. Is this normal? any thoughts or remedies?

  • High temperature and fan speed in ML

After upgrading to ML my MacBook Pro gets extremely hot, around 90 degrees, within a minute out of nowhere with the fans racing at 6200 rpm. This doesn't even help cooling it down one little bit. I already tried to shut down my laptop and reset the SMC which only solves the problem temporarily.
Does anyone else have this problem, and if so is there a solution at all or is it just a software issue that Apple is, hopefully, resolving soon?

If you can, open Activity Monitor and see what's using up all the %CPU.
If its kernel_task, shutdown immediately and do a PRAM reset, like this:
    1. Power down the machine.
    2. Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
    ‘command’ – ‘option’ – ‘P’ – ‘R’
    3. Press the ‘power on’ button.
    4. Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
    5. Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up as it should and with the kernel_task process back to normal.
If that's not it, try quitting whatever the process is by selecting it in the Activity monitor window, then 'Quit' in the task bar. If the process refuses to quit, post back with the name of the process.

  • Ultra 40 M2 core temperature and fan speed

    Hi,
I'm using a Sun Ultra 40 M2 with two dual core AMD opterons 2218 running openSUSE 10.3. I have been trying to use lmsensors to monitor core temperature and fan speeds. It seems to be working and I have been able to use gkrellm as well.
At low load I get temperatures around 40C on all cores (as measured by k8temp-hwmon), and fan speeds of about 1500 (rpm?; as indicated by lm85-hwmon2/fan1 and lm85hwmon2/fan2; only two fans?). However, at full load all core temperatures go up to 70-75C (steady) and fan speeds increase up to 2500 (which does not seem to be the maximum speed of the fans, as they are much noisier at booting stages). I wonder if such an increase in temperature is normal and how can I setup the fans' speed, if at all possible.
    Thanks,
    Marcos.

I'm currently running dual 2222se chips, an fx3500, and a single samsung 15000 146gb with an idle temp of 40-42c. But, I've run into a problem. For some reason, when my system boots, the fans run through the BIOS checks, but after post, the fans stop entirely. I've gone into the BIOS and fiddled with a few of the settings, but haven't been able to rectify the problem. Is there a specific setting that I may need to change to get the fans to actually run after post?
I got this workstation used, so I was unable to get the tech support information I was looking for without paying an additional fee. So any help whatsoever would be MUCH appreciated.
ChinGimLeong, as far as your idle temp goes, that sounds about right for the setup that you're running. You may want to look into purchasing some thermal grease and cleaning your chips and totally reapplying the grease. Improper application can hinder the heat transfer, causing a bit of a high idle speed. But if you apply too much, you WILL fry your board and processors. Another thing that you may want to try would be adding an external ventilation source to help get a bit of faster airflow. I use an 8 inch desk fan, it adds a bit of extra noise, but noise is nothing when you're protecting your system.
Let me know what you think.

  • Satellite P750-10R idle temp and fan speed

I have just received a P750-10R and I am wondering if the idle temp and fan speed is normal. I do not have it on eco mode and the processor is at around 50 on core 1 and 47on core 2. According to the Health Monitor the fan runs at 71% speed which is rather loud in my opinion.
The ambient temp here is not very high, maybe 21-23 celcius.
Does anyone have a similar model that behaves the same way?
    Regards,
    Danel

    Small update on the issue.
Switching to eco mode will shut off the fan for a short time. Switching back from eco mode puts the fan immediately at approx. 67% speed, no matter what is running at the time. Fan doesn't seem to run at any speed under 67% but can go higher.
Could it possibly be the recent bios update? I didn't run the computer for very long on the bios it shipped with, so I haven't got a comparison base between the two versions.

  • T430 Thermal Limit and Fan speed

    Hello, I have a T430 with the i7-3520 and NVS 5400 1GB.
I'm a little concerned with the high temperatures my system shows. At idle and most of the time the temperature on the cpu is reported in the low/mid 40C range. (fan is very quiet or nearly silent)
However, I tried playing Age of Empires 3 to see how the laptop does. Performance was great, fan speed kicked up a little but I thought it was still VERY quiet (all my other laptops have much louder fans when they kick in). Initially I thought that was great, until after an extended play (1hr or so) I seem to have hit a thermal barrier of some sort. Frame rates droped massively, everything was choppy. Uppon exiting the game, I loaded HwMonitor and the cpu temp was reported to be 75C, nvidia temp 68C.
I read some other threads here, and I saw HIRO mention speedfan, so I installed that, but what puzzles me is neither software detect any fans, All I see is thermal sensors.
I did replace the HDD that came with the laptop with a Samsung 830 SSD. I used the Recovery disks to install the new O/S, so all drivers came through just fine.
Anyways, I like the fans being quiet, but once I'm over 50C or 55C I'd like this thing to start moving some serious dust. Is there a way to control their profile? The only option I saw was both in Bios and in Power Manager under "System Settings" there's an option "Optimize fan control to" and I have it set to Maximum Performance.
    Thanks in advance,
    -Phil

    Hey PhilZJ,
Hey so Other people have an issue with speedfan not showing the fans and just temps you can use TPFancontrol if you want. On my T430 TPFancontrol shows temp of 53c and fan speed during start up but without pushing my temp past 55c the fan never kicks in or so TPF says being at RPMS stay at 0. Could I suggest you download TPFcontrol and run your game? See what temp and the RPMS your fan kicks up to? I would but playing games at work is frowned upon.
    Best Regards,
    Hiro
P.S. So if you set TPFancontrol to manual at setting 1 you get RPMS of 3434 RPMS, at 7 you get 5000+ RPMS.

  • Temperature and Fan speed? screen freeze

I Have 2011 MacBook Pro 13inch . I was having the screen freeze issue from a hot graphics card it cpu that so many others have with this year macbook. After a night of playing videos (not realizing it was in loop) connected to my hd tv using thunderbolt. After the first one it happened a few more time after playing any video for a few minutes. Screen freeze with little pixelated boxes, yellow or blue. After some research I reset SMC and seems sit of fixed it. I am not running SMC FAN AND Temperature Monitor apps and my fans run about 2000 all the time. When I get hit it speeds up but not to much, seems on point. Except when I play hd videos the system get gets to 75-80c . I still have not had the freeze but that's because I have temperature monitor to launch SMC fan set at max fan speed when it get a to 80 d
Degrees C.  I'm wondering if anyone knows the safe temp the 2011 MacBook Pro should be running at When playing hd video. I know it gets hotter when playing hd video by without SMC it seems my fans don't kick on to max speed untill the MacBook reached about 85-90c. Once the fans max it cools it right away. I know the fans are working cause I hear them but should the fans kick on faster before it gets to that hot if a temp. And is it safe to play hd movies of its running at about 80-85c?
Thank you for any information you might have on safe and average temp and fan speeds. If anyone has a macbook pro please let me know when your playing hd video for about a half hour or more how hot your cpu is showing.

Macs have established a reputation for being inferior game machines.  PC's dominate that area and if that is a high priority, I always recommend a PC.
    Pauletronic wrote:
I'm happy to know that 85-90 is normal for video but my maCOBOL did almost fry my logic board from over Heating.
I doubt that you almost' fried' the logic board, but you may have approached thermal shutdown.
I also have a 2011 MBP and have run applications that are CPU/GPU intensive with no issues (the MBP certainly does heat up and gets very warm).  I have never felt the need for a third party fan control.
If you wish to run games a lot, a cooling pad and a cool environment would help the situation.
    Ciao.

  • First Backup on Time Machine - CPU temperature and fan speed

I attached my external WD drive and started Time Machine. Works just fine however I watched the cpu and temp and fan speed as reported by iStat.
During the hour long "first backup" I reached an incredible 160 degrees cpu temp and 6000 rpm fan speed. Cpu was 70 percent or so. When this temp was reached it looked like some limiter took over to reduce cpu consumption and temp. CPU dropped to 30 percent and the temp came down. Fan rpms reduced as temp did.
I don't know if iStat reports the feeds on a MacBook Air properly or not but if so......interesting.

160F is not very high - 160C would be a different matter.
Under sustained 100% load, my Macbook CPU is at about 190F, with the fan at about 6200 rpm, in a room at about 68F.

  • Satellite C855 - Average CPU temperature and fan speed

    Hello!
I've had this toshiba Satellite C855 since march this year. it's only recently that the CPU temp and Fan speeds have been worrying me.
When I'm not playing games or doing a livestream my CPU temp stays around 35-40% with the fanspeed at steady 50% or not on at all due to it been cool.
When I do play games however the fanspeed is going up to around 66-68% with the CPU been around 55-60%
I was wondering if this is normal? or do I need to clean it out by taking it apart. if it is the second option then I am worried since I do not want to damage anything inside. plus I am not that great with the inner workings of a computer.
Any help or information would be very appreciated thanks.

In my opinion there is no reason for panic. T is logic that under stress CPU activity is higher and CPU produces more heat. Notebook must be cooled down properly so sensors that control cooling fans register growing temperature and cooling fans will run on higher speed.
There is no reason for cleaning. And one day if that must be done please dont do it alone. You are not authorized for doing this.

  • Normal woring temperature and fan speed?

    Hi,
I have installed vista x64 bit on macbook pro and have some questinos.
FIrst, can someone help mi to find keyboard shortcuts for turning on/off wireless network and bluetooth... if is this possible.
Second, I have installed "input remaper" that allow me to reconfigure some keyboard shortcuts, and it automatic control fans and monitor CPU tempereature. It is between 60-70c and fan speed is set on 2000 rpm minimum... Is it this ok, mean this temperature because machine is sometimes really hot....
    Regards,
    BA

I too have been wondering the same things. My temps are very high as well 68-69C for the GPU and 65-67C for the CPU cores when under Vista. I do not believe that Vista has any method to control the fans at all for the new unibody macbook and macbook pro models, at least that is the conclusion that I have been coming to myself. I have tried speedfan, riva tuner, coretemp, input remaper, and ati tool, all to no avail. Nothing knows how to properly access and control the fans for the laptop under Vista, and on top of that, the 9600 GPU is the one in use when under Vista, which means even more heat at idle. This really needs to get fixed with an update of bootcamp or a full driver release for vista.
