High-res photo slideshow

Got an iPod photo for Christmas and just created a slideshow of 200 pics that plays on my TV. FANTASTIC! Love it, love it, love it.
But now I'm getting ambitious, the picture quality isn't as fabulous as it could be.
In this article - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300251 on iPod slideshows on TV, it suggests the following for improved quality:
Connect a S-video cable to the S-video out port on the iPod photo dock. This connection provides the video signal.
Connect the other end of the S-video cable to the S-video input on the television.
Connect the AV cable to the line out port on the iPod photo dock. This connection provides the audio signal.
No dock of any kind came with my top of the range iPod. I've got the Bose sound system which acts like a dock, but bought an AV cable because I didn't have a 'universal dock'.
My question is this: Can anyone out there tell me if I can use the Bose dock with an S-video cable somehow or is the iPod photo dock something else again?

I'm so pleased my my iPod, although a bit miffed that I bought iLife 05 just a few months ago and now am expected to pay again for iLife 06. Apple always put the squeeze on don't they? But can't deny they're the coolest products!

Just a thought... (I only have FCE 2.0.3, so I can't try this out, and iMovie HD isn't enabling the option to create an empty project in HDV.)
Can you create a new project in 1080i and import your photos into that project? That will result in much crisper video than 720x480.

How to open high-res photos files? (Lumia 1020)

Ok, I dont have time to do alot of research on this when the 1020 cant make JPEG format of the high-res photos in the first place.
So...how do I open these photos on my computer...or have I missed something? The format seem to be *.DGN, never heard of it.. How to make it JPEG?
Why these stupid long filenames and its not as easy to get the files to my computer as it were on the Belle (N8 and 808)...
I suggestion, get the Lumia phone compatible with the Nokia Suite computer program and some settings there that filter what type of files to sync to the computer and so on...I loveed that program wre you could upgrade the phone and have a good overlook and which handled many differant phones at the same time...

Also in settings it's easy enough to switch to JPG highres. Actually unless you changed it to DNG yourself it will (still) be on that setting. Unless you need or want to process your photos yourself using a suitable program on your PC there is very little point in using the format to shoot the highres images.

Make a high res photo smaller, while keeping it high res

How can I take a high res photo into AE, size it down and keep it high res? I have to make a video where I have mutliple headshots close together.

Resolution is the number of pixels. When you scale down an image in After Effects AE cannot cram more pixels in physical space. Let me explain. I'm going to use whole numbers so the calculations are easier.
If yhour image is 3000 pixels wide and you put it in a 1500 pixel wide AE comp then AE will crop the image to 1500 pixels wide. You will only see half of the image. You can move the image around because the pixels in the image outside of AE that are not in the Composition Canvas are not lost, they are just not visible in the composition because they are cropped.
If you want to see the entire image you must scale the image down to 50%. The original 3000 pixels now become 1500 and you can see the entire image. Did you follow that? Inside the composition your image is not still 3000 pixels, it is only 1500 pixles. Half of the information in the image is thrown away. After Effects uses some complex math to try and maintain as much of the detail as it can but half of the information is lost. Your image, inside the composition is now half the resolution of the original.
If your design requires you to see the entire image without any cropping then it does no good to import an image that is 3000 or even 2000 pixels wide. Photoshop, and a bunch of other image editing applications, can do a much better job of scaling down an image that After Effects so if you want the image to have the best appearance then you should scale the image down to the composition width in something like Photoshop before you bring it into your project. AE will perform better, the image will look better, and all will be well with the world.
The second scenario in a design may be that you wanto to do a push in on an image to reveal only 1/4 of the original photo. In that case, if you started with a 3000 pixel wide photo in a 1500 pixel composition you would need to scale the image to 200% to crop the image to 1/4 of the original area. This time, After Effects will have to double the number of pixels in your image. This results in a loss of apparent detail. You would be better of importing an image that was 6000 pixels wide to start with. Here again, if the original is only 3000 pixels then there are better solutions for scaling up the image and restoring the apparent detail than AE. Photoshop does a better job and there are 3rd party solutions that can do even better.
I hope this helps you understand resolution. One more thing, PPI has nothing do do with resolution. PPI only controls the size of the image when it is printed. Here are two examples. Download them and check out the PPI in Photoshop. Both are exactly the same resolution. Drag them in to a word processing app which respects print size (ppi). You'll learn something.

Pages + High Res Photos

How can I resize a high res photo in Pages without distoring the photo?

caralee, best is to crop or change other thing in a picture in graphical application before adding it to Pages.
You are not saying what kind resizing you want to do. Do you want it to be larger or smaller and keeping the proportions? Apple has always had the Shift key as a proportion keeper. Press it while you drag a corner to change the image size.

Does iPad change the resolution of a high res photo?

I read that if I use the Camera Connection Kit to load photos directly from my camera to the iPad, that the iPad "modifies/reduces" the resolution of the jpeg (if they were taken with a high res camera).
Anyone know if this is really true? And if yes, what the "impact" might be?
The reason I am concerned is that I want to use my iPad as a repository for my images while I am traveling and then move those photos to my computer for editing when I am back home. BUT if something is going to be lost in this process, I should reconsider.

It doesn't.
The original file from the camera is copied to the iPad and it is not modified.
When you connect the iPad to the computer, you can then copy the original to the computer.

Nothing is lost from CCK to iPad to computer.
When syncing photos back to the iPad thru iTunes, the photos get reduced/optimized to 2304 x 1536.

How can I stop high res photos being pixellated in an In Design Brochure?

I'm trying to create an In Design Brochure but am finding that many of the photos are pixellated despite being of high res 300 dpi. Is it better to use photos with a higher or lower resolution that I want to be for example a sixth of A4 on a page? I can't understand why, as these photos look fine when I've used them in other non Adobe publications previously. Your help would be most useful. Should I post this in Photoshop forum? Thank you

If you select a bunch of layers in Photoshop, you can right click and make them into a Smart Object. It differs from using a Group, because the original is always kept in memory, so if you were to make it very very small, and then make it big again, you would not lose quality. You can do the same thing with a single layer for the same reason.
To edit a SO, double click it, and it will open in another Photoshop window. Make your changes, save them, and the original will be updated.
Photoshop CC 14.2 has added ‘linked SOs’ which are close to a holy grail in Photoshop, because a linked SO can be used in multiple image documents, and they will all update (when next opened) if the master SO is edited. That is a major new feature and much appreciated.
Adobe Dynamic Links are similar to the right click you used in InDesign. Items in a Premiere Pro timeline can be very easily edited in their original, or relevant Adobe application, directly from the PremPro timeline. This would be Photoshop, Audition, After Effects, Encore… It’s powerful stuff, and a huge time saver.

Lousy DVD video quality on high res photos!

I need some help. I am new to using iMovie and iDVD.
I just created a 15 minute video with a lot of high resolution photos (anywhere from 1920x1200 to 4256x2828). These photos are sharp and look superb on a computer monitor. Once processed through iMovie and iDVD the photos look terrible - low res noise all over the place - pixels are swimming - when played back on an HDTV with a nice upscaling DVD player. (I've tested on three DVD players - one on my MacBook Pro - all DVD output looks terrible.)
The process I used from iMovie was Share Export to iDVD. While the Share Export to Quicktime output looks great in the native 960x540 playback in QuickTime - even full screen on an HDTV. But quality of what is on the DVD is terrible - particularly at showing the still pictures!
Question: If I want to optimize the image for highest quality DVD playback is there a resolution I should process the photos to with Photoshop prior to importing to iMovie (640x480 for example?) Is this just one factor? What about the method of getting the iMovie product to iDVD - does THAT matter?
How do I get to a quality, hi res. image during DVD playback if I'm using iMovie and iDVD for a slide show?
Note that most DVD players are upscaling to an HD monitor with resolution of 1080i or 1080p.
What is the secret?

Make a small 4x3 SD DV iMovie project with a few pictires - no Ken Burns
Close iMovie
Open iDVD - import (This should work - if not the problem is more severe)
Here make a DiskImage
Close iDVD
Open the image
Play with Apple DVD-player
How does this play.
as Standar DVD ? If so we have a start to work from.

1. iDVD 8 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
• Professional Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - BEST
• Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
• High Quality (in iDVD08) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
2. From
• FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not selfcontaining, no conversion)
• iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
• iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 this can also be set)
This can also be done with (Apple) Disk Util tool.
4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
5. Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
6. DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
iDVD quality also depends on:
• HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
• What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
• What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.

DVD Studio pro can set Region codes:
1 = US

Apps for showing off high res photos

I often do talks about my photos and previously being a Windows user just used windows photo viewer if I wanted to flip though them one by one and Photos to exe if I wanted to make a high quality movie.
Two months ago I got a retina Mac Book Pro and now will use this, but if I just double click on an image in a folder I just get Preview and can't click next/next to show the subsequent ones.
So my question is what app is the best for just showing my photos one by one (so I can zoom in 100% if necessary) and what would be best for making a short movie to music (with simple transitions in time to music)
Can you do all this Adobe Bridge or Aperture?

iPhoto is usually not the best solution for a quick flip through because you can't use iPhoto without going through an Import step.
You don't need any apps to do a quick flip through on the desktop. Just use the QuickLook feature (File/QuickLook, or just press the space bar). When in QuickLook, click the double arrow in the top right corner to go full screen. If you had selected multiple images and go into QuickLook, click the multiple square icon near the top left corner to go into slide show mode. Now you have an instant slide show without opening any apps at all.
The only problem with QuickLook for your stated needs is it does not let you zoom into 1:1 as far as I know.
The only application you've mentioned that will successfull fulfill all your needs for a quick flip through is Adobe Bridge. Unlike QuickLook, iPhoto, or Aperture, Bridge can do all of these:
View images instantly without need for time-consuming import step
Go into slide show with keyboard shortcut
Examine image at 100% or more either by loupe (on preview) or zooming (in full screen or slideshow mode, clicking image toggles between 100% and fit screen size).
This tip will save you time: When you have a folder open in Finder and want to see it in Bridge, just drag that folder to the Bridge icon in the Dock, to skip tedious navigation in Bridge. The folder will load immediately in Bridge. You can then go immediately to slide show if you want.
You still need another app to turn the slide show into a movie. For that you can use iPhoto, iMovie, or Aperture. But since you mentioned Bridge, if that means you also have Photoshop (the video capable version) or Premiere or After Effects those will work too.

How to reupload high res photos to Facebook?

About a year ago I uploaded an album with the built in Aperture/FB sync functionality. Back then FB only allowed very small images that got very brutally compressed. Now FB supports resolutions up to 2048 and the compression is much less harsh. New albums created in Aperture does utilise this new format, however when syncing the old albums, even after making changes to a photo, Aperture still only exports a low-res high compression version. How can I force Aperture to upload in the new format?
I realize I could make a new album, but then I would loose all the tags and comments – which I would really like to avoid.

Wondering the same thing. Any solutions?

PDF or higher res photos

Any suggestions would be helpful. Basically I would like to be able to use my ipod touch to read 9 point type on pdf or tiff documents while off line. Right now the type is blurry in the photo application and PDF's can't be saved for offline viewing.

Cool suggestion. I just put a 300 page company policy manual on my Touch that way. Alas, the PDF capabilities are pretty rudimentary. No Search is a huge issue. And hotlinks embedded in the PDF (the table of contents and Index pages have those) also don't work on the Touch.
Oh well- hopefully a real PDF viewer is coming!

Possible to upload high res photos on nano 7?

I made a map of the city where I live, so I could put it on my iPod nano 7th generation. I know the screen wouldn't be big enough, but since there is a pinch to zoom option, I thought it wouldn't matter. But when I upload the photo to the iPod, it's resolution is automatically lowered a lot by iTunes (or the iPod?), and I am only able to zoom in a bit. Not enough. I can't read the street names. The picture is a .jpg. Any advice?

When the photo is synced to the iPod, iTunes creates an iPod optimized thumbnail of the original that is formatted for better viewing on the Nano's smaller LCD display.
There is no way around this.

Why is image quality so deteriorated when pasting high-res photo as stamp?

Greetings.
I've had inconsistent luck with pasting images as stamps. Some come in heavily pixelated and some don't. My most recent image is 300 dpi and a little over 1MB. Looks beautiful in PhotoShop, but incredibly degraded when I paste as a stamp in Acrobat 9 Pro: Tools > Comment & Markup > Stamps > Paste Clipboard Image as Stamp Tool. Any suggestions?

Original poster, here. I should add that it's not just degraded, it has added, pixelated colors swirling around the image. Here are screen prints of before and after. Please help. If I can resolve this, I may have a new career for myself.

I jammed up my email, safari and pictures by emailing a series of high res photos quickly. what do I do?

Hard trying to send the pictures. In any event do a full shutdown. Hold the home and sleep until the slider appears. Ingnore it and keep holding until the apple appears. Let it come back to life, and see where you are. If it comes back, check your outbox in mail, and see if those pictures are still sitting there.

Here is how I got a high resolution photo to Flick...

As to how I am getting the high res photo to Flickr, well I upload it from my phone while in Nokia Pro Cam to my ATT Locker account. I cannot seem to get it to cooperate from that point, at least not from my Lumia 1020, but if I log into my Locker account from my iPad 3 and then punch the download arrow at the top left of the screen, it brings it up in all its glory (as it is downloading it will ask to all the pop up, click yes or you will not go any further). Once it has downloaded I email to myself, and it send a long mumbly mumbly link, but in my email it opens up fine, to the full res shot. From there I press my finger down on the photo, and choose the save image option.I then go to my Flickr account, once again from my ipad, choose the upload option from near the top, and click on the top upload files tutones, choose existing phot, which takes me. to iPad "Photos" app/page, click on the high res photo, it appears next to file button in about 4 or 5 seconds, hit go near the bottom of the page, and voila! it will then appear in your Flickr account as the big high res photo. There is probably an easier way if you don't have a PC Or Mac, but so far this is the only way I have made it work, convuluted as it is. Hope this helps someone.

The full res images made on the 1020 can only be taken off the phone through a USB connection with a PC. The OS itself is only aware of the 5MPx image.

High Resolution Photos Don't Display

Hello,
We have a fully patched Lync 2013 installation with a fully patched Exchange 2013 installation. We've moved all users to the Unified Contact Store, and have had all users upload high-res photos. I can test this via the URL like this:

I can definitely see high-res photos. Unfortunately, Lync doesn't display them! We get the old, low res AD photos that are horrible. I have read through everything I can find to ensure high-res photos are enabled in Lync, but they just don't display.
Any ideas on how to fix / troubleshoot this?

Hi, depends what constitutes everything you could find =)
Can you confirm that the 'DisplayPhoto' attribute of your associated client policy is set to allow ALL photo's, and not just those from AD.
Use the below from Lync Management shell to query the attribute status against your client policies.
Get-CsClientPolicy | Select Identity, DisplayPhoto
