High Southbridge gpu temps

I was trying to check on the temps for the cpu and ended up with HWmonitor. This is not really an overclocked system. I had noticed that the top of the heat sink for the south bridge was fairly hot after some memory test. The Heatsink/fan for the cpu seem to be doing good though. I left the min speed for the cpu fan at the second highest level so the motherboard heat pipe system would get more air, but it doesn't seem to be enough.

I had was thinking about a small fan stuck on top of the center heatsink in the HP system or over the voltage regulators though the hot spot seems to be at the SB.
I was also wondering about the fancy metal plate slid in over the voltage reg HS that advertises 140w ready. Seems it would reduce air flow around the fins though now I'm more concerned about the SB. Don't want that to fry.
Board is in a 4U rack case. I added a 120mm Vantec fan to the front card side of the case to help get air moving on that side. fan is rated 1500RPM 53 CFM
I went into Entropia for about 10-15 minutes and checked back and it reports a peak temp of 117c (242F)

I was told they called it southbridge because the NB is in the cpu. You change CPU-NB to bump up the memory controller speed. The SB is located so that anything higher and it would interfere with cards. If you look at the pictures of the board, the heat sink in the middle of the heat pipe between the slots and the cpu is MCP82 (http://vr-zone.com/articles/nvidia-preparing-mcp82-xe-chipset-for-amd-am3-cpus/6755.html?doc=6755). It has the video. The heat sink at the end of the slots is NF200. That seems to be the SLI bridge. And of corse the heat sink between the back and the cpu are the VR's. Its the NF200 I was putting my finger on to check. But I also tried the MCP.  The reason MCP and GPU where going up the same is they are in the same chip just like there are 4 cpu core sensors plus a cpu sensor in one chip and they stay together. From what I am getting of the two remaining sensors, one is power supply and likely the other is ether VR's or the SF200. SF200 would go up because it's tied to the same heatpipe.
I picked up couple of 20mm fans. May put one of those on the MCP heat sink. I would reduce the grease if I knew more what it had now. Don't want to take it off and find I need special pads for the VR's or something.
The NB isn't really in the CPU but the memory controller is (and has been for some time).
You do not likely have an over-abundance of thermal paste so much as hardened and ineffectual thermal paste.  You won't need any specialized pads unless there is a significant gap to be closed by design.  Heat transferring tape is available.  I have read reports of people reducing temps just replacing the MSI thermal goop that has turned into something more like MSI concrete and staying with the factory heat sinks (again, I recommend a non-conductive paste).  People have gone crazy about not using too much, often to their detriment.  There are situations where "too much" really is "too much" but it's not as common a problem as people say if they're using quality stuff.  You have to be more careful if you use conducting material (e.g., silver based) because you don't want to short your board.  I recently used "just enough" as a >first ever< experiment in using such a sparse amount and had to remount my CPU HSF with significantly more for a 10C drop.  I was able to confirm another poster's observation that AMD heat spreaders can be concave.  In any event, the spring tension down on the HSF will squeeze out anything it doesn't need and despite what you read in the papers, this method has worked for me for over 10 of the 20 years I've been building my own.
I still think there is something whacked with what Everest is reporting to you at least in part because there is no CPU diode report, only core reports.  You will want to know the temp of your NB, GPU, and CPU independently and confidently.  Have you posted to Everest yet?

  • IMac iSight GPU Temp?

    Hi,
I just got my iMac iSight a couple days ago, and i was monitoring the temp of the iMac with Temperature Monitor when i noticed that sometimes my GPU Temp will go up to around 96°C/205°F ... is that normal? i dont want to burn up my graphic card... thanks in advance for any help on this..

    Valhalla:
Are you referring to you CPU temperature or the GPU because there are two GPU temperature sensors. I assume you mean the CPU. I don't care what you were told. To me 205 is too hot. Noone else has reported a temperature that high. In fact, I believe the earlier versions shut down around 180+. Why should this one be able to go up to over 200?
I would call help desk again find out what is the accepted range, tell them you think it is running to hot and a new computer or any computer should run that hot. Better yet, find out at what temperature the computer shuts down. Get a case number and make sure you tell the individual that you fear it will burn up your graphic card.
Or tell Apple you are returning the computer. I would be very tempted to return it and don't fret about how long it would take to get another.

  • MSI GT780DX Embedded Controller gpu temp detection

    Hi Svet,
I wanted to ask you something (if it is possible).
Recently I upgraded to a Clevo 7970m from the Nvidia 570m the notebook came with originally.
I noticed something however that the fan does not ramp up with the gpu temperature rising.
I'll make an example: I start Kombustor/Furmark where only the gpu gets stressed. Then I start monitoring with Afterburner.
What happens is that the gpu starts heating up but the fan remains at idle levels. It can reach as high as 80 deg and still the fan would not spin faster.
With the cpu it doesn't do this. Once the cpu starts heating up the fan spins normally.
What do you think it could be? I think it's related to the EC not reading the gpu temp.
If it can be done I'll donate as soon as possible
Running stock bios 1761_30.H with EC 1761_1419 (ver. 4.19)
I also upgraded the MEI to version 7.1.5 (can it be upgraded further?)

  • MacBookPro 15" 1.1: Strange GPU temp sensor behaviour

    Hello to all,
Since I let my trusty MBP alone for a week two months ago some real strange behaviour occured.
I left my MBP in standby as usual. When I came back from my trip, the battery was completely discharged and I had to connect the power adapter. MBP awoke from suspend to disk (grey screen, progress bar) and a few seconds after beeing ready for work, fans started to rev up. 5 min later the fans were running at full speed.
Puzzled, I did a restart. Same behaviour, high RPM right after boot logo, full 6000rpm after a few minutes.
When I took a look at iStatMenus I saw that the GPU Heatsink Sensor Temperature was around 35 degrees Celsius (around 70 Fahrenheit) higher than the GPU Temp sensor itself. It was the highest readout by all sensors, which makes no sense at all.
I tried: PRAM reset, SMC reset, PMU reset. Apple Hardware Diagnostic CD by me and a German ASP, and by a Genius Bar expert. No errors shown.
But over the two months the difference between the values sank to 18-20deg Celsius, and I found a tool to let only the CPU sensor control the fan, so I was happy again.
Yesterday I came back from another trip, guess what: battery empty, woke up from standby..... the difference is now around 36 deg Celsius, and the MBP shuts down automatically even on the smallest YouTube clip when GPU Heatsink Temp exceeds around 86deg Celcius.
I am clueless, everybody around me too. So maybe one of you has an idea?
    Regards, Matthias

Not sure about sensors adapting to reality by themselves. This sounds like very strange behavior. I wonder if there could be something like a loose connection somewhere.
Did the computer misbehave in front of the genius? If it didn't, it might be worth while seeing if you can determine the exact circumstances under which it will act up so you can make it act up in front of the genius.
For example, my iBook used to freeze, but only when warmed up. I went to the genius bar early so I could give it time to warm up so that it would be sure to malfunction in front of them. This is especially important to do if you are still under warranty. It's important to establish that a problem first occurred under warranty, especially if your warranty is close to running out.
    Good luck!

  • TS3999 I see high and low temps in place of scheduled events. Why do I see weather instead of events? Is there a way to switch ?

Anyone out there with a solution?  I don't know how it got there but I now see high and low temps in my Calender view 68/45 and I don't know how to get back to only events.

Check Settings>Privacy>Calendars.  You may have a weather app that is accessing your calendar and entering this information.  If so, turn it to Off and see if it stops.

  • I Can't Switch between 'power-saving GPU' and 'High-Performance GPU' in Catalyst Control Center

    Hi,
Whatever if my computer was only on the battery or was only plugged in to the main power supply. In Catalyst Control Center, I noticed that 'High-Performance GPU' was always selected', although the 'automatically select power-saving GPU when on battery' was enabled. Also, When I tried to switch into the 'power-saving GPU', there was no response at all. However, when my laptop was only on the battery, I noticed the the try of switching into 'Power-Saving GPU' results in shutting down my computer suddenly.
Thus, I had to open the Device Manager, then I disabled 'Radeon HD'. After that,  'power-Saving GPU' was selected(Screen shot below), regardless of whether my laptop was on only the battery or was only plugged in to the main power supply. To switch it into 'High-performance GPU' again, I only must enable 'Radeon HD' in the Device Manager since clicking on 'High-performance GPU' in the Catalyst Control Center didn't respond.
As conclusion, 'High-performance GPU is always selected, regardless of whether my computer was only the Battery, or was only plugged in to the main power supply. To let 'power-saving GPU' is selected, then 'Radeon HD' must be disabled in the Device Manager.

  • Why does v31.0 claim that it requires High Perf GPU on my MacBook Pro with Mavericks OS?

According to Activity Monitor, a utility that is part of Mavericks, Thunderbird requires the High Performance GPU on my MacBook Pro - it's the only program I run all the time that does. I think this is a new problem with this version and suspect it is a cause of increased battery drain.

Thank you. I've been through the steps, my memory usage appears to be quite normal. There was a suggestion to try a beta version but the only betas I can find are all older than the current version I have.
I also run Firefox 31.0 (with similar add-ons) and that does not exhibit the GPU problem at all.
The bug appears to be raised here: [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=689742 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=689742] . It starts life as an issue on OS X and turns into a fix for Windows. If it is the issue I'm seeing It doesn't fix OS X.

  • Average GPU temp?

I just wanted to know some other peoples average GPU temp for just browsing the web or light use mines is 54 C or 120 F is that too hot?

That's perfectly normal. Temps can get into the upper 70s or low 80s (°C) during heavy use.

  • Getting the GPU temp on a Radeon Card, and is a Radeon X850 PRO 256MB PC card flashable for use in Mac G5?

I decided to post this as a new topic since it really didn't belong on the tail end of my X800 XT thread of woe...
Is there any program that can get the GPU temp of a Radeon video card on a Mac?  I have done quite a bit of looking online and have come up with nothing. Strange, since this is usually a concern for all computer owners..  I don't even care if it's unstable, beta, hack city.
The second part of this question is:  I have a PC AGP video card "Radeon X850 PRO 256MB", and I wanted to know if it is flashable to use in a Powermac G5.
The card looks a lot like the X800 XT, except for the chip on the underside of the card that says "ATI Rage Theater" on it.
Here is a link to a pic of the underside of the card that I found on PhotoBucket:
    http://media.photobucket.com/image/recent/dualamdmp/DSCF6296.jpg
    Here is the top side:
    http://s1238.photobucket.com/albums/ff489/dualamdmp/?action=view&current=DSCF629 2.jpg
In case my efforts completely strike out getting a video card with an ADC port (basically the X800 XT or X850 XT), I am starting to look for a reasonably priced DVI to ADC converter.
    Thanks!

Is there any program that can get the GPU temp of a Radeon video card on a Mac?
    No.
Radeon X850 PRO 256MB...I wanted to know if it is flashable to use in a Powermac G5.
Possibly. BUT, it won't output digital, which is what you need to use a DVI to ADC adapter.
All flashed Radeon X800/X850 will only output analog.
A flashed FireGL X3 , using a Mac Radeon X800XT ROM will output both ports digital, and one of those is also dual link DVI (in case one wants a 30" Cinema Display).
That's the only flashed X800 that outputs digital.
If you're going the adapter route, consider an OEM or a flashed Geforce 6800 GT or Ultra.
The Ultra actually out performs the X800XT in some areas, with the GT not far behind.
A flashed Geforce 6800 GT can be a real performance value, often times a bargain.

  • G505s are high apu and gpu temps normal during gaming?

Hi, I'm new to Lenovo laptops and new to Amd processors so need a bit of help/advice regarding my G505s with 2.5ghz A10 Apu and 5750 Gpu.
I have had this laptop about a month now and overall I'm impressed with it including its ability to play a lot of demanding games such as Battlefield 3 and even Dayz! Although the laptop runs these games on decent settings and maintaining good frame rates, it has one down side, it gets hot!
After about 20-25 minutes playing battlefield 3 on high settings the laptop gets to hot and restarts without any notice. If I turn the game settings down to medium then it is possible to play a bit longer before the laptop restarts itself. The only way I've managed to play without the laptop restarting is by going into processor power options and changing it from 100% to 99% maximum processor state. This means the Apu clock speed is reduced and it doesn't go into turbo mode. However by doing this I am losing processing power (max clock speed reduces to around 2100mhz) and the laptop still gets very hot.
Using various temp programmes I am getting Apu temps of around 90-94 degrees Celsius and the 2 gpu's are around 85-90 degrees Celsius. To me the fan doesn't seem powerful at all on my laptop and even when the laptop is really hot you can hardly feel any hot air being blown out of the vent. The keyboard on the left hand side and the case above the vent gets very hot to touch and makes using the laptop uncomfortable.
Basically I just want to know does any one else that owns this laptop experience these high temps during gaming? I also get similar temps when just streaming films over netflix although not quite as high.
I know this isn't a dedicated gaming rig so heat isn't going to be ventilated as well as it could be but these temps seem worryingly high to me and I don't want long term damage by using it running too hot.
    Hope someone can help me
    Cheers in advance
