High Spec New iMacs *ARE* More Expensive!

Ok, so I finally took the decision in mid-February that I couldn't wait another minute for the new iMac range to come out.
I forked out for a top-spec iMac of the (now) previous generation.
Imagine my dismay when just 20 days later, the new range was announced!
BUT!
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/7089/picture4fo9.png
Is my iMac.
I decided, for the sake of putting myself through more pain, I would see how much an iMac with the same spec would cost.
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/1420/picture5oh7.png
Now granted, the first one includes my 15% educational (student) discount.
So lets add that to the new one.
New iMac Costs: £1706.80
My iMac Cost: £1565.15
And the only change I can see, is the graphics card model.
Does anyone have another explanation where this £141.65 has disappeared to?!

The new iMacs have double the RAM and larger hard drives in the standard config.
The entry level imac has increased RAM from 1 to 2GB, just purchased 2GB for 20 pounds. Hard drive cost is falling, going from 250 to 320 might not cost anything.
There are internal technical changes that allow up to 8GB max for RAM (previous max was 4GB). The new iMac uses "1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM"; the previous iMac uses "800MHz DDR2 SDRAM."
To the majority of users bus speed will make no difference. Its just a re-design of the motherboard.
The new iMacs have the Mini Display Port, which allows connection of a 30-inch (2560x1600) external display as the second monitor. Previous max was for a digital display was 1920x1200 through the mini-DVI port.
I doubt most imac users add an additonal screen.
I'm sure there are other technical changes that are not so obvious.
The remote has been removed and the default keyboard is now smaller with removal of the numeric keypad (reduced cost), I know that this is no cost upgrade but most people will purchase preconfigured spec.
And as you noted, the video hardware is different.
Video card upgrade, most likely to support SL graphics but marginal for majority of usage.
It's not possible for an outsider to know what accounted for the change in price.
Exchange rate is being blamed on most online forums, for what is a marginal upgrade in the current recession its a difficult to judge why the same entry level imac went from 780 to 950 UK pounds in one day! The 20 inch models still have the 6 bit tn screen which was one of the major issues people had.

  • My new iMac are slow, what is wrong?

Hi, I just got a new iMac 21.5 tum for christmas. My parents got a MacBook Pro and it feels like their Macbook Pro are faster than my iMac. My iMac takes forever to load and start some programs and sometimes and when I play Minecraft for example and I got skype running in the background I usually have 58-62 fps and when Skype says ''Fred came online'' (or any skype notification) I get framedrops and I get around 19 fps for a few seconds. And my games and programs crash often, like when I tried to upload a video I made with iMovie to youtube, iMove crashed. And when I started the game World of Warcraft in fullscreen the screen got black for 50 seconds and then the game started. And when I try to record a gameplay with QuickTime Player its lagging alot, my friend got a iMac 21.5 tum too and he not none of theese problems and its not lagging for him when he's recording with QuickTime Player. Is it something wrong with my computer or is it just a teribly bad computer for gaming and is it like this for everyone?
    Some info:
Processor: 2,7 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB
    Software: Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion (11C74)
Sorry for my bad english! :/

Since it's new you should call AppleCare and let them walk you through troubleshooting. BTW, what is "tum?"

  • With the new iMac, are you able to use any DVD's?  If so, how?

I'm interestred in purchasing the new iMac and was wondering if it was possible to use any type of DVD with it.  Such as a movie.
If so, does the iMac have a DVD slot or how owuld one go about playing a DVD on it?
Thanks in advance and so sorry for such a simple and basic question.

Buy an external USB optical drive such as Apple's USB SuperDrive.

  • Why are the new iPhones much more expensive in Canada?

Looking at the Apple Canada website I see that the iPhone 5C is priced from $599 (yes - 500 and 99 !!), whereas the US price is $99.  The difference for the 5S is similar.
Why this huge discrepancy, and will it be corrected soon?  I certainly don't plan to get one anytime soon if not.

Thanks for that.  I didn't take enough notice of the fine print, but it's odd that Apple should advertise it differently on the US and Canadian online store websites.
I will wait and see what (if any) deals come along via my carrier.  I'm due for a new phone anyway.

  • Two New Imacs are damaging CDs/DVDs

We just bought two IMacs for our daughters about a month and a half ago and they both seem to be damaging Cds and DVDs. We've already lost a game on one machine and a CD on the other. The the IMac accepted the discs, ran the software and ejected normally but the discs were scratched after ejection. Is anyone else having similar problems?

Yeah, the problem, I think, is that the slot for the drive is cut straight through bare metal, whereas the slots on previous Macs have been rimmed with plastic.
As you hold the disc at arm's length and TRY to match whatever tilt you have your unit set at, you're definitely going to make contact with the edge at some point.
I ruined Disc 4 of my brand-new set of "Firefly" DVDs that way, so bad that I wasn't able to trade them in at the Used DVD store.
They should've rimmed the slot with Teflon, or something nonabrasive.

  • HT3775 AVI files copied from PC to new iMac are not playing. Message is The document "Mural.avi" could not be opened. A required codec isn't available.  As far as I know I have the moist recent version of quicktime.  HELP!  Please.

I cannot get the AVI files to play on my iMac.  They were copied over from the PC and I can see them but when trying to open them I get the message "The document “Mural.avi” could not be opened. A required codec isn't available."  As far as I know I have the most recent version og Qucktime.

Try installing Perian or VLC. Some AVIs require a codec which simply isn't available for Mac OS X.

  • Why are calls to certain countries more expensive ...

    Hello!
I just wonder why calls to ordinary phones are more expensive to certain countries than to others. For example a call to Afghanistan is 30 cents a minute, a call to Somalia or Guinea is 57 cents a minute, but a call to France is only 2 cents a minute. Why is that? Are you working on a solution to that? We have many immigrants in my country who would like to be able to make cheap calls to their home countries and not only to rich western countries.
    Thank you!
    Greetings from Andreas from Sweden

We are fellow users here on these forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple. Forall items in the store the prices are set by the content providers, and with US prices you need to add on the state's sales tax to the listed price, which I think can be up to something like 7 percent.

  • HT6346 New iMac very slow after upgrading to Yosemite...

I recently purchased a 21.5 inch iMac and had it specced up. I was very happy with it until last week when I upgraded it to Yosemite. It has slowed down significantly. When switching between programmes and selecting different actions, it appears to stop, then the "thinking wheel" appears, before carrying out the requested command. Sometimes as much as 10 seconds. For example: the simple act of hitting "reply" in mail, it takes as much a s10 seconds to open a reply mail. I videoed it several times. Very disappointed...
    Specs
    iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013)
    3.1 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1024 MB
just the process of copying and pasting the specs from About this Mac, took ages. Each line "thought" about it for several seconds before allowing me to select it.

Similar problem here too (quite high spec 2011 iMac 27") ; takes longer to boot up and Safari is slower under Yosemite than Mavericks.I  have just installed Firefox and had a play around with it and it is much faster than safari ~ just couldn't get the appearance the way I liked so uninstalled. This morning I was using a five year old Compaq (averagely specced) and using Chrome it was much much faster than Safari is currently. I like Apple products (and just bought a new iPod classic for spare ) have, iPad etc but these 'upgrades' are like puling teeth for me. IOS 8 was useless on iPad 2 but improved slightly yesterday with IOS 8.1. I have little interest in technology as an end in itself, ( hifi and audio is my thing) just wanting it to work. I still can't send emails since Yosemite was installed last week as 'smtp servers are offline' ~ well, no they're not as email still works on iPad, android phones and compaq using the same servers.  This really irritates. I was so impressed with iPad 2 when I got it ~ it set itself up virtually and I was sold on Apple's ease of use but I don't get back the 3 hours I spent last Friday checking settings, deleting accounts, re-adding email  accounts and ultimately failing to fix it.
Yesterday I went to a famous dept store here in the UK to get an iPad mini with retina display as our iPad 2 is 3 years old  but I left the store without buying it; just got sidetracked by looking at Samsung and believe it or not, Surface 3 program microsoft. Enough doubt in my mind after IOS7/8 and now Yosemite.
I still think Apple's products are beautifully designed and aesthetically and ergonomically impressive, but the Yosemite experience is draining; everyone glad handing about how great it is and it patently isn't. The design changes in the mac mini (lower performance than 2012 model ) and iMac (5K screen notwithstanding, much more difficult to make internal changes)) looks like arrogance.
Sorry for the negative rant but that's almost certainly me done

  • New iMac Cant Hold Internet Connection (and finds a lot of networks....)

    Hello,
I have one of the new 20" iMacs released 8/7. My problem is that my iMac cant hold an internet connection and it finds a lot of possible networks to which it can connect.
I am certain the issue lies with the iMac because my old Powerbook G4 has no problems connecting to the internet and it is sitting literally next to the iMac. Furthermore, I actually had purchased an iMac about a week ago and that one had no problems connecting to the internet either. (I returned that one when the new iMacs were released.) So that means 2 Macs had no problems connecting to the internet from the same location yet this new iMac does.
One thing I have noticed about this new iMac is that it detects many more networks than my Powerbook or the iMac from last week. I live in Manhattan so there are networks everywhere. Sometimes the iMac will give me 15 or so different networks to connect to and seconds later the choices drop to 5 or so. When I try to connect to the network I want (my network) the connection doesnt hold and it frequently drops. It takes me forever to download anything. I have to write this post on my Powerbook. My Powerbook only detects 2 or 3 possible networks to connect.
I rebooted, etc. and that did not work. I shut the Powerbook down so that it would not "compete" with the iMac and that did not work either.
    Any suggestions/ideas?

    Hello Wireless groupies:
I have had wireless problems with my laptop and my power mac this week, but all is well for me now.
The grass roots issues of wireless communication in terms of physics are related to amplitude and frequency. The amplitude is controlled (signal strength) by the power setting of the router and the portable device. The amount of power in the signal is measured in watts per square meter and is controlled by the broadcasting units settings.
The frequency at which the router broadcasts is changed by channels available in both units. I believe the portable units scan each channel for base station transmissions just like the radio in your car/lorry . The frequencies associated with each channel on the base transmitter can be assigned by the user for the best reception in the local broadcast area, most likely your home. The area which you operate has many different interference parameters which degrade signal strength just as in your portable radio reception. In the base station world it is based upon digital transmission encrypted (D to A) into an analog signal then decrypted at the laptop from analog to digital signal.(A to D). Experimentation is probably the only method to determine which is the best frequency to operate between your devices.
It should be noted that the new Imac's have an extended frequency range because they use a 'N' class wifi set of components. The N class wifi allows for higher frequencies and extended ranges. A base station which is a G class wifi can only broadcast in the lower frequency range and hence the availability of the higher frequencies of the new Imac are irrelevant because the Imac must receive only what is is transmitted in the 'G' range, 'N' class reception and hence the benefits of higher frequencies are not available. The only solution is to have 'N' class devices through out the network, otherwise everything reverts to the 'G' class range of lower frequencies. The solution to extend the frequency range of the network is to upgrade ethernet cards and base stations, so that 'N' class frequency transmission can be utilized.
The network will work with 'G' and 'N' devices but the network is only as good as the lower class device of transmission and reception.
I would start by getting an extreme network airport base station and then experimenting with different channels at a midpoint power transmission. The best frequency would be one which delivers the most power at a set power transmission level (signal strength). The higher the frequency the greater the penetration through walls, beams, people, dogs, cats, pipes, tabletops....:). I would then experiment with the power levels for the range which you want to cover, most likely just your home and not your entire neighborhood.
In my house I use channel 6 and power level 5 from a 2wire gateway/router, which is in the G extreme class range. I have always used channel 6 but I have tried power levels 3, 4 and 5. The biggest interference variable being weather and cordless phones. The cordless phones operate in the 2.4 GHZ range and the 900 MHZ range. The phone directly above my router is a 900MHZ phone and it never interferes with the 2.4 GHZ wifi network. I think the worst phone to have with a G class network are the 5.4GHZ phones because they actually use some of the same wireless bandwidth. A 'N' class network would probably be a better choice if you want to use a 5.4GHZ phone system.
    good luck

  • Where do i insert a cd into my new iMac?

I just setr up my new mac. I can't find a place to insert a CD or DVD?????

The CD/DVD SuperDrive is no longer built into the iMac. Basically it comes down to the fact that there is no optical drive thin enough to be installed into the ultra thin iMac enclosure.
You need to either purchase Apple's own external drive for $79 U.S.D or purchase a third party external CD/DVD optical drive.
Not trying to be sarcastic or rude here, but we see a lot of these posts about the absence of the SuperDrive. Before plunking down a lot of money for a brand new iMac, it would be good to do a little research about what features are available or not available for Apple products.
There is nothing in Apple's current iMac product specs that mention the iMacs coming with a built-in CD/DVD drive, any longer.
And, if you did a little research about the new iMacs like product reviews and such, you would've found out about the deleted optical drive in the new iMac design.
Plus, being so thin, some common sense would prompt you to ask before buying where would a CD/DVD go in such a thin computer as the new iMacs are, now.
    Sorry,
But the missing iMac built-in CD/DVD drive issue has been covered to death here and elsewhere.
Why would one buy a product without knowing anything or everything about it before you buy?
    It boggles me.

  • New iMac beach ball and performance

I recently purchased a new iMac direct from Apple.
For months I had been using a Mac Mini at work with Mac OS X 10.6.6.
My new iMac has also been updated to 10.6.6. Also, I have installed the same software on both computers. They are essentially the same.
I was very excited about my purchase since my Mac Mini at work behaved beautifully. No crashes and no beach balls. It ran like butter.
My new iMac has more memory and a newer/faster processor than the Mac Mini at work, so I expected it to be even better.
So far, however, that has not been the case. I don't see any noticeable improvement in how my iMac runs vs the Mac Mini. Worse, my iMac is frequently hit with beach balls that routinely last 10 to 30 seconds per incident. It has been extremely frustrating. Also, the new iMac crashes quite often, which really surprised me. I have to routinely force quit apps and reboot which almost never happens at work.
Any ideas why the older computer seems to perform way better than my brand new one?
    Thanks!

    Update:
I don't know if this will be useful, but I'm documenting this for the record. Any confirmation of these observations would be most appreciated.
As a Perl programmer (a big reason why I went with iMac in the first place) one of the very first things I did out of the box with my new computer was dig into the terminal and install some Perl modules with CPAN.
I think I did this the very same night I first turned my iMac on. And I can't remember if there was ever a time when I didn't have the beach ball problem.
Eventually I was unable to install new modules or even run CPAN at all. The computer gave me a "permission denied" response even when I was logged in as the root user. I finally learned to solve this problem by going to the Disk Utility and fixing permissions.
I've been using my computer for 30 minutes now and happened to notice I haven't had any beach balls yet. That's a very rare thing for me.
So I'm wondering if the beach ball issues I've been experiencing were related to the stuff I did with CPAN or not.
Anyone ever experienced anything like this?
In the meantime I'll keep an eye on things and report back later with additional observations. Thanks!

  • Is new iMac keyboard also USB 3.0...?

The USB jacks on the back of my new iMac are USB 3.0.
I have a wired (stock Apple) keyboard, the one with a USB slot on the side.
Is that USB slot also USB 3.0?  Or is the transfer speed slower when going through that flimsy keyboard wife?

I found this after posting the question:
from the Apple store online: iMac 27"
About the Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad
The wired Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad offers an extended layout that includes document navigation controls - page up, page down, home and end - and full-sized arrow keys for playing games and scrolling through documents. Its numeric keypad is perfect for spreadsheets and financial applications. And two USB 2.0 ports let you connect your mouse, as well as a high-speed peripheral such as a digital camera or printer.

  • Buying new iMac

    Hi Chatters,
I have currently a G5 with 4GB RAM and dual 2.3 GHz processor. I am actually a nature photographer working with huge RAW files in Aperture. The performance of my Mac is drastically decreased recently and Aperture quits many times and extremely slow, if running... I am not able to use it together with CS2.
So I think there is the time to change the computer to a faster one. As the budget is limited I thought the new iMac (24" model) would be a nice option. Do you think guys, using mainly the Aperture, Photoshop and Numbers together could not be a problem for this 2.8 GHz proc iMac? Any advice is highly welcomed. Could the speed and performance be enough for those applications?

  • Sorry, New iMac is Ugly

I know "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and "There's no accounting for taste," but the new iMacs are ugly. (I have one of the "old" (nine months) Intel iMacs with a 24" screen; it was love at first sight.) Leaving aside the horrible glare, does anyone really think the black border around the screen is attractive? The design is a confusing mix: white, black, silver. I know the insides are top-notch, but Apple has been about so much more than that. At the beginning I thought maybe it was a bad first impression, but I've been back to my local Apple store about six times since the new iMacs were unveiled, and still leave feeling the same way. Interesting, during my visits, while there are crowds swarming around the iPhone, MacBooks, and iPods, there hasn't been a single person in front of one of the new iMacs.

I also find the new iMacs to be beautiful. The white ones looked nice, mind you, but they were too much of a "look at me" item, and plastic at that. The aluminum ones seem to me like they are designed to be more elegant, and less flashy, which I love.
I didn't think the black border was a particularly good idea at first, but it really does improve the view of graphics versus the border being shiny aluminum. It also helps hide the iSight camera and IR receiver for the remote.
The glare on the display is no worse than a CRT monitor. The same monitors we all used in our windowed offices before LCDs came out. The same monitors some of us still use today. I really think the glass is an asset to the screen that really makes the colors come alive.
However, they still need to do something about that ridiculous Mighty Mouse. Mighty Mouse forecast: I'm predicting a 50% chance of right-click today.
