High Speed DSL connectivity issues.

Hi. I have connectivity issues with the High Speed DSL internet connection. I have had internet service with you guys for almost a year now, and since day one, I have had connectivity issues. In the past, the connection would drop once every few days, and about once every two weeks I would need to restart the modem in order to get my connection back.
I have restarted my router countless times, and even done a factory reset on the router a number of times as well.
The past two days, my internet connection has been worse than ever, with the connection being dropped about once every five minutes. And, while the connection was up, my browsing, video, and email loading times were very slow.
The internet light on the modem is constantly flashing, even when I am connected.
The gateway status info page refreshes 4-5 times a minute.
I dont know if any of the following info will help. I would like to continue with Verizon as my ISP, but if the connection issues continue, I will have to change services.
I have the Actiontec GT708WNV modem.
The gateway status info is:
Gateway ParameterStatus
Firmware Version:
GT784WN-VZ-1.1.6
Model Number:
GT784WNV
Serial Number:

WAN MAC Address:

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Remove that line. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?
As to where that is, it seems to be at
STATUS > WAN STATUS.

• Fed up with speed and connection issues since exch...

Last Monday BT done some upgrade work at our local exchange.  From that point onwards we have had speed and connection issues.
I use a Belkin G Router rather that the Homehub some that we can run a printer through it and that is plugged in to telephone socket via an extension.  But before we blame any of that we have gone back to the Homehub2 so we could see the difference and there is very little.
We live in the countrside so broadband speeds are not great in any case.  About 1.8 mg I guess but we have always had no problems.  It was good enough for us and we could watch Iplayer.
I was getting fed up with drop outs and speed and yestereday an Openreach guy came out tested everything could not find any problems apart from speed.  He made some calls and was told our band width had been capped.  He had that removed and yesterday evening speed was a bit better.
Today just as bad again.

Hi Welcome to the forums
Your high noise margin  will have a major impact  on your speed
If you post the full stats from your router
For homehub – type 192.168.1.254 into your browser
Navigate to ADSL Settings or use the A-Z at the top right of the home page and scroll down to ADSL Settings and click on it
Click on More Details and then post the full results.
also post the full results from http://speedtester.bt.com/
Have you tried connecting to the test socket at the rear of the master socket
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
also you could try the hints given by poster RogerB in this link they may help http://community.bt.com/t5/BB-in-Home/Poor-Broadband-speed/m-p/14217#M8397

• Question about high speed DSL

I have had high speed DSL 1.5 MB service since 8/20. Up until last night I was in love with the service. It was running between 600 and 1000KBPS excededing my expectations.
Then last night around 9:45pm it got extremely slow. I am talking 23.3KBPS on the bandwidth test I was able to run from CNET. I followed the instructions in the tech support and power cycled my modem and PC. I checked all connections and they were secure. The DSL light is solid which from what I have read here means I have a connection.
Would rain/thunderstorms cause an issue? We have had a large amount of rain since Saturday.
I am just frustrated with this issue.
Solved!

Ok..
Please post the modem status from your modem.
#1 If you have no idea of what I mean, since I have no idea of how old or new your Westell 6100 is, I point you to All DSLR (.dslreports.com) FAQs » Verizon Online DSL FAQ » 4. Hardware -> How do I use a router with the Westell 6100?
#2 When there, notice that they talk about the white and blue Westell Firmware and the red and black Westell firmare.
Please only answer my question - Do NOT attempt to do what they tell you to do there, at this time.
Which one, do you have?

• What is the best way to connect my ipad to the high-speed Internet connection in a hotel room

what is the best way to connect my ipad to the high speed inernet connection in a hotel room

every connection is a bit different. Generally, connect to the wifi, then you may need to open Safari, and may even need to try to get to one of your bookmarked pages to trigger the 'agree to our terms' page to come up.
As to it kicking you off every so often, there are sometimes glitches with the wifi on iPads, you can also be subject to any programming the hotel has. Like I've noticed various places that only allow you to log on for a period of time before having to relogin.
most hotels have 1-800 numbers, so you can always try calling that to see if their tech support has any tips for the frequent disconnection issue.

• High speed DSL !?

hi all
I know DSL uses ATM for its for its connection,
but what about high speed DSL which is above 100MB ??
does it still use ATM ?
thanks,

You don't look at the ATM protocol.  You look at your router.  If you want a modem that will support 100 Mbps, then a small router like 890 (as an example) won't support this speed.
You need to have a big router, like a 3945 to support 100 Mbps.  That is, of course, you can find an EHWIC card which will support vectoring.   Currently, there's no Cisco modules available to support vectoring.  Don't know when it'll come out.  I guess Cisco is still listening out to see if it's worthwhile developing something like this.

• I do not have a high speed internet connection. How can I get Mountain Lion on a disk for install?

I do not have a high speed internet connection. How can I get Mountain Lion on a disk for install on my 24" Imac?

As long as you use your Apple ID to purchase it, I don't see why they wouldn't let you download the installer on one of their Macs and put it on a pocket drive.
Or, a friend with a high speed connection?
I agree with you about the delivery method, just trying to help you get what you want.

• Is UNITE-CB1B @ 4G considered a high speed broadband connection? My Macbook does nothing well

Is UNITE-CB1B @4G considered a high speed broadband connection. I've tried three times to download Mavericks and no go. Is it my Macbook or my Wifi? If it's my Wifi, I guess I'm just screwed. Very down on Apple right now.

Make sure your MacBook Pro meets Mavericks requiremennts  > OS X Mavericks: System Requirements
Mavericks is a 5.35GB file and requries a high speed broadband connection and requires 8GB or more of available disk space.
Backup all important files before upgrading
Checked to see how much space is available ??
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
You can test your download speed here >  Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
Download speeds less than 10Mbps may time out before the 5.35GB file can download.
Keep in mind, after installing Mavericks, if at some point you need to restore OS X or repair the startup disk, that requires a broadband connection as noted here > OS X Recovery

• Wireless high speed internet connection

I would like to know if somewhere we can find a kind of PCS card for wireless high speed internet connection, but for power books and iBooks G4?
I'm living in mexico City and one company (iusacell) is offering the service but just with PCS cards for PCs, but no for macs.

Unfortunately, the 12" PowerBooks and both size iBooks lack the required PCMCIA slot for such cards, so they cannot be used at all.
The 15" and 17" PowerBooks do have a PCMCIA slot, but if your network doesn't supply Mac software or drivers, it probably can't be used.

• Is Practical to use ODBC over high speed intenet connections?

I am developing an application using Oracle 10g as back- end and Visual Basic / Access as front-end. ODBC works fine in intranets for this purpose, but I wonder if it will work over high speed internet connections to manage several offices from the headquarters.
Any information on the subject will be appreciated.

Connecting and using database connections over a WAN can be very slow. There are usually several network conversations for even the simplest SQL statements. An application that is used to querying the database each time it needs data can be brought to its knees when the latency goes up, regardless of how much bandwidth is available.
As long as the latency is less than 20ms, you probably won't notice too much. Once it goes over 50ms, you start to curse these database companies that don't use real streaming. At 100ms or more you start thinking that Citrix is the best invention in the world.

• Internet by high-speed DSL cable and two computers sharing the cable

I have a DSL cable going to my computer. It is high speed 100mbps internet. There was a modem supplied but I do not use it. I just stick the cable which comes out of the wall into the computer using the USB ethernet connector.
When I plugged the DSL cable into the modem then connected the modem to my computer, the internet speed was slower (about 30 mbps) so I did not do that.
If I want to use wireless internet though I do have to use the modem.
When the service provider technician came to my home to hook everything up, he said something about purchasing a router from him. He said that way I can have multiple computers using into the internet.
Since I only had the one computer at the time, I did not take him up on his offer.
Now, I want to use two computers––two MacBook Airs––using the cable. I prefer the cable to wireless because it's very fast.
Before I go and buy any equipment, I want to know what I need.
Do I buy just a router and then put the cable that comes out from the wall into a socket and then connect the other two computers to the router, or do I need to get a modem as well?
Just to remind you that when the modem is connected to the computer, the speed drops a lot even though the cable is connected to the modem.
If I need a modem, do I need to buy a special modem or is the one that I have good enough?
Sorry, if this sounds like a basic question but I don't really know much about routers and modems. I surfed the internet a bit on this but I still am not sure what to do.

• PlayStation3 Online W/ Verizon High-Speed DSL

I am getting  Verizon DSL High Speed Internet due to the fact that FIOS is not yet available in my location. My question is what kind of speed will i recieve with the PS3 Online set-up. I am using a wireless router to connect my playstation 3. I am wondering what kind of speed i will recieve and if i will recieve any lag????

     NO simple answer!
What speed you get depends on 3 things:
1). How much you pay. You can order 1mbs, 3mbs or 7mbps service
Each represents a maximum speed, and a different price.
2). How far are you from the Central office.
(7mbps is only available if you are fairly close to the CO)
3). The quality and condition of the copper pair between your premises and the CO.
You can be next door to the CO, but if the copper pair stinks, so will the DSL data rate.
Ultimately your speed will the the lower of either
The speed Verizon provisioned you for (what you ordered)
or
The Highest speed the Modem can successfully negotiate with the CO equipment.
For many users those are the same, but if you are toward the edge of the DSL 'footprint', you can order 3mbps, but you the copper pair length/quality may limit you to something considerable lower that may even be sensitive to changes in weather.
Once you are connected, you can look at the connection information on the modem/router, and it will tell you the data rates in both directions from the CO.

• VERIZON CHANGED HIGH SPEED DSL AT CENTRAL OFFICE AFTER I HAD 7.840 MBPS FOR MORE THAN 10 MONTHS!!!

ALL OF THE SUDDEN VERIZON DECIDES IN LATE APRIL THAT I SHOULD HAVE 7.1 MBPS INSTEAD OF THE 7.840 MBPS I HAVE BEEN HAVING FOR MORE THAN 10 MONTHS. AS A MATTER OF FACT, AFTER A LOT OF DISCONNECTIONS SUFFERED IN MARCH/APRIL 2012 BECAUSE VERIZON WAS DOING SOMETHING IN THEIR CENTRAL OFFICE WITHOUT TELLING TO THEIR CUSTOMERS, AND HAVING TO REPLACE ALL OF THE DSL FILTERS, AND TWO MODEMS... I GOT THE D-LINK WORKING AT 7.840 MBPS. AS A MATTER OF FACT, VERIZON TECHNICIAN CAME TO MY HOME AND WE DID INSTALL THE NEW MODEM AT THAT VERY SPEED, WHICH WAS AGREED MORE THAN 1 YEAR AGO AFTER DOING A LOT OF TESTING TO ENSURE THE STABILITY IN THE CONNECTION. ALL OF THE SUDDEN, AFTER THE 20-DAY HONEYMOON WITH MY NEW MODEM, I NOTICED THAT MY SPEED WAS NOT THE SAME, AND FOUND OUT THAT THE IP WAS CHANGED AND THE SPEED SETTING DROPPED TO 7.1 MBPS. NOW VERIZON CLAIMS THAT MY CONTRACT WAS FOR A MAXIMUM OF 7.1 MBPS WHICH IS NOT TRUE BECAUSE I WAS IN THE 7-15 MBPS RANGE!!! AS A MATTER OF FACT I COULD GO EVEN OVER 8 MBPS BUT BECAUSE OF MY LOCATION, RELATIVELY FAR AWAY FROM THE CENTRAL OFFICE AND AFTER A LOT OF TESTING, 7.840 MBPS WAS THE MOST CONVENIENT SPEED. VERIZON CHANGES THEIR POLICIES NOT NOTIFYING THE CUSTOMERS, THEY DO WORK INTERRUPTING THE SERVICE WITHOUT NOTIFYING. I AM GOING TO WAIT AND SEE WHAT THEY DO IN THIS CASE. IF THIS IS NOT SOLVED PROPERLY... GOOD BYE VERIZON, AND HELLO TIME WARNER CABLE!!! SO, VERIZON BE PREPARED TO LOSE ANOTHER LOYAL CUSTOMER FOR MORE THAN 9 YEARS!!! THAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH VERIZON, THEY ARE SO DEDICATED TO GET NEW CUSTOMERS THAT FORGET ABOUT THEIR OLD LOYAL ONES... UNFORTUNATELY, THERE ARE CONSEQUENCES... AND THOSE ARE THAT YOU WILL LOSE THE OLD ONES SOON BECAUSE YOUR LACK OF CARE ABOUT THEM!!! ONCE YOU ARE HOOKED WITH VERIZON, THEY THINK THEY GOTCHA FOREVER... LET'S WAIT AND SEE...

Believe or not... That 20% does make a difference... In one of my games, I used to have 5.3 secs of response time, now it does not lower from 7.8. By the way, even my PC worked faster  when I had that little higher speed... I know the changes were done without my knowledge because for a period of 2 weeks I got lot of unstability in my connection that I never got for years before... After 20 days with the first IP assigned to the new modem, the speed dropped like Verizon was running a program to levelize such an speed.
At the end, what really bothers me, is that the 7.840 Mbps was a speed agreed with Verizon, their technicians, their supervisors at the CO, and it was fully documented, and all of the sudden because an "internal change in their policies" that agreement was broken... I am currently making arrangements to have FIOS installed at home, subject to an scouting visit from Verizon to evaluate the feasibility of its installation according to my internal wiring limitations. I have to give them a try... No doubt that it would me cheaper and much faster than the high speed enhanced internet connection that I currently have. Let's wait and see...
Thank you for your interest in my case and observations made too.

• Options for high speed internet connection. . .anyone tried Directv?

Just relocated to a black hole of communications. . . Sprint telephone provider does not provide high speed service in my area. Town about 10 miles away has wireless access but not good for me. . . have new intel 20" Imac and now using apple external modem. . .good connection with aol but slow and would like to do better. I have Directv which is persistently touting their internet service. Anyone have experience with that? What are my other options, if any?

I have had DirecWay (soon to be HughesNet) for a year. I have the Pro account ($69/mo) with 1000/200 kb/s D/U and a 350MB download bucket which refills at 56 kb/s. That is about 350 MB per 16 hour period. It has been reliable. Heavy snow will stop like with DirecTV, but with dish low enough to sweep the snow off corrects this. Speeds vary, but is always better than dial-up. We had 18.8 kb/s on a very good day with dial-up.
However! The latency is high, 700-900ms. This delay is annoying, it takes a few seconds before your page come up. "Twitch" games don't play well. Other than that it is great.
I kept waiting for DSL or anything but it never came. My only regret is that I should have gotten it sooner.
For a Direcway discussion board go to http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/sat

• How can a session be setup between two MacBook Pro's at different locations on high speed Internet connections, be setup to have a live recording session in Logic?

My partner and I live on opposite sides of the valley here in Phoenix. About 50 miles apart one way. We are Musicians and are working on a commercial for television, and would like to know if there is a way, between FaceTime and Logic, that we can configure our MacBook Pro's to record sessions together without having to be at the same house? When we FaceTime, he can hear my keyboard through his headphones, but we can't seem to get the signal routed into Logic and register to a track when its record enabled. Is there a way for us to save gas, and record at seperate locations, so he can engineer me and I can engineer him, while we build this project in Logic and Final Cut? Here is what we are using, we have nearly identicle setups, which was planned so we might be able to do something like this. Both of us are using Mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro's with 2.6GHz Intel i7 processors and 16GB RAM. The only difference between the two MacBooks is that his has an Optical Drive, but I removed mine and replaced it with a 2nd SSD Drive, so I have two Samsung 840 Pro's each with 512GB in my MacBook Pro. His just has one Samsung 840 Pro with 512GB. We both use Focusrite Saffire Liquid 56 Firewire Audio Interfaces, and we both use Logic Studio 9 Academic. I don't know if you need to know what we are using in order to help us figure out how to configure the MacBooks for a live session, so I figured I would give you those details just in case. If you need any more information, just let me know? Oh, we both have high speed cable Internet connections. Mine is 150Mbps speed which is the absolute fastest I can get in my area. And his is only a 50Mbps speed line.
Again, what we are looking to do is have a LIVE recording session, in Logic, with him at his house and me at my house. When we FaceTime each other, we can pretty much hear each others keyboards as if they were part of the conversation, and as crystal clear as we can hear our own when recording, but we can't seem to record enable an Audio track in Logic and route that keyboard signal into Logic and record it so we can engineer each other without either one of us having to drive to the others house, to be there to do it. If any of this even makes sense, I'm not quite sure how to better explain it. So hopefully you get what I mean, otherwise just say so, and I will try to do a better job explaining it.  :-)
Anyone who can help us with this little problem would be greatly appreciated, and quite a hero in these two humble Musicians Worlds!! So from both of us, THANK YOU in advance for any input you might be able to give us. I look forward to hearing any and all suggestions.
Scott

Hey Scott
You and ALOT of people are attempting to do this, myself included.
Unfortunately at this point (to my knowledge) it's a pretty CRAP setup involved that will likely leave you frustrated.
HOWEVER:
A few things CAN be done:
IF you are getting live audio from your partner over the internet, you can re-direct that audio directly into Logic using a program called SoundFlower.
There are a few alternatives to SoundFlower, like JackTrip, and.....(the name eludes me)
(SoundFlower is from a company called Cyling 74 who also makes Max MSP. )
Once in Logic, you set your audio inputs to the track to be Soundflower. (either 16 inputs, or in this case 2)
That all being said, regardless to speed, you are still going to experience latency in the connection, and THAT is the part that will likely drive you to the mad house.
THIS all being said, I believe there are websites out there that are set up to actually do this kind of thing, (at least there WERE) but likely membership costs, and other "hidden" problems that you only learn about after you have signed on the dotted line. (Hopefully I am wrong?)
If you don't need to do a "live jam", there are always solutions like DropBox that work very well for exchanging large files quickly.
If you want to record live MIDI input from his keyboard, I am unaware of any solutions for this.
Due to the popularity of the iPad, you might want to look into the App store, and see if there is something available.
Good luck!

• High speed DSL is very slow

Hi I am barely getting dailup speeds (Verizon speed tests 74k download and 14k upload) on my HS DSL. I've put up with slow speeds for a while but I just can not put up with it any longer. If things do not improve soon I will be forced to go to cable. Youtube is unwatchable, downloads take forever.  I am using a westell 327 modem.  Any ideas on how to get the promised bandwidth would be apprecated.

Which means
Visit http://192.168.1.1/ for me and do the following:
a) If you see a Blue and White Westell page, mouse over Troubleshooting, go to DSL, and choose Transceiver Statistics. Copy and paste the information on that page.
b) If using the Red and Black Firmware: Go to System Monitoring > Advanced Monitors > Transceiver Statistics. Copy and paste the information on that page.
c) Try visiting http://192.168.1.1/transtat.htm which is a direct link to the Stats on older modems.
d) If you need a Username and Password, try the following:
admin/password
admin/password1
admin/admin
admin/admin1
admin/Serial Number.
By Serial Number, I don't mean type in the words Serial Number. I mean find and type in the serial number found on the bottom of this router.
