  • Pushing the limits of continuous high-speed DAQ + processing, with PXI-6115 + PXI-8360

    Hi all,
I'm trying to do continuous high-speed data acquisition + processing. I currently have:
    Chassis: PXI-1042Q
    AI card: PXI-6115 (x2)
    Link: PXI-8360
PC CPU: Intel Xeon W3503 (dual-core, 2.40 GHz)
    RAM: 4 GB
The idea is to continuously grab 8 channels' worth of analog inputs, scan for "events", and if found, log the events to disk.
My client would like to use the maximum sample rate of 10 MHz, but I found that above 5 MHz, DAQmx Read.vi can no longer keep up (e.g. at 6 MHz, it takes 110 ms to read 100 ms' worth of data).
Im thinking of getting beefier components, but I'm not sure where the bottleneck is. Here are some thoughts:
    1) The MXI Express link
The PXI-8360 is rated for a sustained throughput of 100 MB/s.
I'm not sure how big the data is. PXI-6115's ADC is 12-bit. Does that mean each datum transferred through the MXI cable is 1.5 bytes? Is the data padded? Or is it 8 bytes per datum, because Dbls are being transferred?
    2) The CPU
In Resource Monitor, I notice that the CPU usage is 0% at 60 kHz, 8% at 61 kHz, and 50% at 70 kHz (meaning that one core is maxed out). I'm surprised that it keeps up all the way until 5 MHz though.
What causes this high CPU usage? Is it due to the conversion of the data into 1D array of waveforms?
    3) Something else?
Have I missed something completely? Is what I'm describing even possible?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Hello,
Each sample will take up 2 bytes, 12 bits data + 4 empty bits. so the PXI-PCI 8360 is only able to transfer a maximum of 50S/s in this case.
Also, because the PXI bus is shared among all of the cards, two PXI 6115 cards will be trying to transfer 80MS/s or 160MB/s.
Finally, since the PXI 6115 are DAQ family cards, their specifications aren't really written for continuous data acquisition at the upper end of their sample rate, but I'm interested to know if you can get up to 10MS/s with only one card operating at a time?

  • Any Help will be apreciated,  I am having problems printing with my Epson PX720WD using Aperture software.  I am getting banding across the photo equal distances apart (25mm), plus it appears to be printing at high speed.

When printing on my Epson PX720WD using Aperture 3 I get lines across the photo 25mm apart, it also appears to be printing at high speed.  I have no problems when I print through Epson Easy print.

Wow - thanks for such a comprehensive post.
I have Aperture and a 2400 so this information is exceptionally useful to me.
Again - thanks for caring and sharing

  • How can a session be setup between two MacBook Pro's at different locations on high speed Internet connections, be setup to have a live recording session in Logic?

My partner and I live on opposite sides of the valley here in Phoenix. About 50 miles apart one way. We are Musicians and are working on a commercial for television, and would like to know if there is a way, between FaceTime and Logic, that we can configure our MacBook Pro's to record sessions together without having to be at the same house? When we FaceTime, he can hear my keyboard through his headphones, but we can't seem to get the signal routed into Logic and register to a track when its record enabled. Is there a way for us to save gas, and record at seperate locations, so he can engineer me and I can engineer him, while we build this project in Logic and Final Cut? Here is what we are using, we have nearly identicle setups, which was planned so we might be able to do something like this. Both of us are using Mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro's with 2.6GHz Intel i7 processors and 16GB RAM. The only difference between the two MacBooks is that his has an Optical Drive, but I removed mine and replaced it with a 2nd SSD Drive, so I have two Samsung 840 Pro's each with 512GB in my MacBook Pro. His just has one Samsung 840 Pro with 512GB. We both use Focusrite Saffire Liquid 56 Firewire Audio Interfaces, and we both use Logic Studio 9 Academic. I don't know if you need to know what we are using in order to help us figure out how to configure the MacBooks for a live session, so I figured I would give you those details just in case. If you need any more information, just let me know? Oh, we both have high speed cable Internet connections. Mine is 150Mbps speed which is the absolute fastest I can get in my area. And his is only a 50Mbps speed line.
Again, what we are looking to do is have a LIVE recording session, in Logic, with him at his house and me at my house. When we FaceTime each other, we can pretty much hear each others keyboards as if they were part of the conversation, and as crystal clear as we can hear our own when recording, but we can't seem to record enable an Audio track in Logic and route that keyboard signal into Logic and record it so we can engineer each other without either one of us having to drive to the others house, to be there to do it. If any of this even makes sense, I'm not quite sure how to better explain it. So hopefully you get what I mean, otherwise just say so, and I will try to do a better job explaining it.  :-)
Anyone who can help us with this little problem would be greatly appreciated, and quite a hero in these two humble Musicians Worlds!! So from both of us, THANK YOU in advance for any input you might be able to give us. I look forward to hearing any and all suggestions.
    Scott

    Hey Scott
You and ALOT of people are attempting to do this, myself included.
Unfortunately at this point (to my knowledge) it's a pretty CRAP setup involved that will likely leave you frustrated.
    HOWEVER:
A few things CAN be done:
IF you are getting live audio from your partner over the internet, you can re-direct that audio directly into Logic using a program called SoundFlower.
There are a few alternatives to SoundFlower, like JackTrip, and.....(the name eludes me)
(SoundFlower is from a company called Cyling 74 who also makes Max MSP. )
Once in Logic, you set your audio inputs to the track to be Soundflower. (either 16 inputs, or in this case 2)
That all being said, regardless to speed, you are still going to experience latency in the connection, and THAT is the part that will likely drive you to the mad house.
THIS all being said, I believe there are websites out there that are set up to actually do this kind of thing, (at least there WERE) but likely membership costs, and other "hidden" problems that you only learn about after you have signed on the dotted line. (Hopefully I am wrong?)
If you don't need to do a "live jam", there are always solutions like DropBox that work very well for exchanging large files quickly.
If you want to record live MIDI input from his keyboard, I am unaware of any solutions for this.
Due to the popularity of the iPad, you might want to look into the App store, and see if there is something available.
    Good luck!

  • Advice on buying camera for stills and high speed video

    Hello video pros,
I'm a music composer who occasionally dallies with some simple photographic and video work. I'm looking for some advice re picking up a camera to make some simple videos, but with the highest quality I can get with consumer grade gear.
I am pretty much ruling out consumer grade camcorders for two reasons:  One is that I want to be able to shoot high quality stills and make stop motion videos from very high res stills.  The other is that I don't need audio recording at all because the video will always be just to accompany music - simple music videos basically.  So I'm much more interested in the recent mid range point-and-shoot bridge cameras with full HD video modes rather than camcorders - they seem to cover more realistically the range of things I want to do.
My main question is regarding shooting at higher frame rates than 30 fps. I'd like to shoot video at a minimum of 60 fps (or higher) to then playback at 25 fps to get that smooth, slightly dreamy motion effect. There are a few cameras out there that offer high speed video modes, but most are nothing more than a gimmick because the res is so low that the resulting video is unusable.  However a few cameras now seem to hit a sweet spot, offering 60 fps recording at HD res, and also 120 fps at 640x480 which (at a pinch) is usable, at least for stuff destined for simple web use.
The cameras I've narrowed it down to so far seem to be the Nikon Coolpix P500, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ40 and possibly the Fujifilm HS20 EXR.  I also was vaguely interested in the Casio Exilim HS cameras, but they seem to only offer high speed video modes that are pointless - 1000 fps at a completely useless low res, and 120 fps only at 640x480.  The others I listed seem to offer at least 60 fps at some kind of HD res, so I'm assuming that with these cameras I could shoot decent looking video which would then play back with that slightly hyper real slow-mo effect when I import into FCP at 25 fps.  Is this correct?  Or is it the case that when they say HD video @ 60fps, it's some kind of interlaced mode which means you can't play back at a slower frame rate to get smooth slow motion?
The other thing I've noted is that all of these cameras do record HD video, but it's always compressed in H264 format.  I understand that this puts a serious limitation on how much post-processing you can do to the video afterwards.  Highly compressed video will begin to show image artefacts very quickly when you apply effects as opposed to higher quality (bigger file size) video compression.  But I think I can live with that given that for the stuff I want to make, it will just be simply edited and only lightly graded.  However, of the cameras I'm looking at, the Lumix also records in a format called AVCHD which (I think) does full HD at 17 Mbps.  Does this mean that it's basic video quality is significantly better than the other choices?  That said, from the specs it's unclear if it actually allows shooting at higher frame rates which you can slow down at playback.. the way it describes 60fps mode makes it sound like it's just interlacing so you don't actually get a higher number of images per second to then be able to play back at a lower frame rate.  This for me might rule it out because I really want the creative effect of high speed video, even if it's only the subtle effect of 60 fps slowed down to 25.
So in summary, I'm looking for a camera capable of creative shooting (high quality stills to make stop motion videos, usable-quality HD video along with at least some degree of high speed video at a resolution that is still usable) to make interesting and artistic footage to accompany music.  The destination medium is the web, so even though I'd like to get the best quality raw material to work with, the final destination is not exactly a cinema screen.  As a pro in a related industry, I'm all too aware of the pointlessness of buying outlandishly over-specced gear that is far beyond your level of expertise.  So I want to keep it simple and realistic, budget-wise, given the level I'm at.  Nothing more than say $800 US.  A seriously high end camera would be wasted on me, and I think it would be wiser to invest in useful accessories like a steadicam merlin and decent tripod rather than blow loads of cash on a camera far beyond my skill level.
Apologies for the long post, any and all advice would be very welcome and appreciated!  And feel free to correct me if my assumptions are wrong, and suggest any gear that I should consider looking at.

Hi, thanks for your input.  I'm aware of the fact that my question is a bit OT, but I'm just looking for input from people with more experience and broader information in this area than I have myself.. I know people are here to talk about FCP, but I'm betting many editors and film makers who work with FCP will have more insight in this area than I do.
I've been reading every review I can find at dpreview, and also am watching as many test video examples I can find on the internet, mostly on vimeo because the ones on youtube look pretty awful.  I just am reaching out to get some actual experience and advice from people who might give me pointers on what to look out for.
As for 60fps not being fast enough, I know what you're saying.  But for me, even 60 fps slowed down to 25 fps on playback is enough of an interesting effect, as long as the actual quality of the footage looks good to start off with.  I like the subtle effect of slightly slower than real motion when it's real, bona-fide high frame rate slowed down.  Artificially created slow-mo using plug ins looks cheesy to me, and the gimmicky super high frame rates of cameras like the casio exilim (where the resolution looks like a mobile phone video from ten years ago) are completely useless.
I've seen lots of examples on vimeo of stuff shot with DSLRs from Canon and Nikon at 60fps and then played back at 25 or 24, and it looks plenty nice enough for what I'm after.  But am I kidding myself that I'd get anything near as nice with the price range I'm looking at?

  • Nikon D2x and High Speed Crop

    Just an interesting observation....
With Aperture and Tiger, Nikon D2x images shot with the smaller MP High Speed Crop (HSC) mode displayed 24 extra columns/rows (depending on orientation) of pixels; thus an image that should be 3216x2136 showed up in Aperture as 3240x2136. The extra pixels included several rows/columns of garish purple and green pixels than needed to be cropped. This is fine for one image, but not suitable for several hundred (such as shot at a sporting event). In addition to the lack of support for .xmp import, this is one of the most frustrating things about Aperture (for me at least).
With Tiger this could be traced back (I'm guessing) to Core Image in the OS because other apps using it (such as Preview) displayed similar results. I was hoping for better results with Leopard and was disappointed to find the similar side effect. But I just checked and Preview, iPhoto, etc. no longer show these extra pixels in Leopard, only Aperture. My hope is that Apple will address this in an Aperture update in the near future (perhaps a RAW Fine Tuning 1.2 option).

I doubt that it's the camera, as the issue doesn't arise on exported pics. That said, as there are only two posts on the forums (yours and the one you refer to on the Aperture forum) it's possible that a: this only arises in very limited circumstances or b: it's local to your computer rather than a bug proper.
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and make a library there. Import a few pics and see if the problem is repeated there.

  • I chat freezes after switching to high speed cable

3 weeks ago we purchased a new I Mac and set up I chat video conferencing with an AIM account. It worked well, with only a few break-ups in the video. At that time we were using a DSL connection-our buddy (Mom) a 2 yr. old I Mac on high speed cable. We switched to high speed cable 2 weeks ago and from that point on I Chat hasn't worked. We connect for a second and then the picture freezes and we get an error msg. We have had our "Mac Doc" out twice and talked to the cable guys- everyone seems stumped and so far nothing has helped. Any ideas on how we can fix this would be greatly appreciated.

  • 1921 15Mbps high speed WAN question and suitability

    Hi All,
I'm looking for some advice on router suitability for the following scenario:
I require an inter vlan router to route approx 200 devices consisting of 150x PC's (Physical & Virtual) and 50x IP Phones.  There will only be a maximum of 5x VLANs.  The router will be primarily used for inter VLAN routing as well as routing to the outside world.  Potentially we may add some ACL's for protecting inter VLAN traffic, but that's basically it.
The router will be connected to the outside via ethernet and a Cisco ASA 5505.  The ASA will provide NAT/Firewall/QoS and packet shaping functionality.  The ASA 5505 is connecting to the outside via cable modem providing 80Mbps down/20Mbps up.
I'd like to understand if the 1921 is suitable for this task specification wise, in addition to confirming the following statement which appears on the datasheet:
'The Cisco 1900 Series enables deployment in high-speed WAN environments with concurrent services enabled up to 15 Mbps.'
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/routers/1900-series-integrated-services-routers-isr/data_sheet_c78-598389.html
I assume the above statement is is only effective when used in conjunction with a HWIC and not relevant in my scenario where connection will be via Ethernet and the ASA5505/Cable modem?
The other reason for querying this is a supplier is trying to push me towards a 2911, due to in their opinion that the 1921 is under spec'd for our requirements?
I'd really like to hear some honest answers on this.  I've seeked some advice elsewhere and had some mixed opinions.  I'm more than happy to  go with a 2911 if it's going to be better suited for our needs, but I really don't see how a 1921 won't be suited for our needs?
    TIA
    Kevin

  • Nikon D2Xs / RAW(NEF) / High Speed Crop issue

I have a problem with my D2Xs when shooting in RAW with High Speed Crop enabled.
When importing into iPhoto (08 - Version 7.1.4 (371))the imported image shows a Green and Purple line down the right hand side of the frame.
It doesn't show when exporting the original file from iPhoto to another program (CS3 / Preview).
It could be the one reason that I finally have to say goodbye to iPhoto, and look at alternatives.
It was reported last year in this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1260989, with no replies. Any ideas or response on this Apple?

  • Using the iphone to view a video recorded on a separate high speed camera

I use a high speed video camera to film athletic motion. Can I play this back on my iphone? The files are in avi format and would I require any adaptors. Thanks, I am very new to using the iphone.

Does anyone know what settings I should use to export a 1080p video for playback on iPhone4? I'm hoping to use the iPhone4 to playback 1080p video on 1080p monitor. Is this possible?
No. Only the iPhone 4S, iPad3, and TV3 currently support 1080p30 content. Even then the 1080p30 playback support for your monitor may depend on how the device is connected. The iPhone 4 is limited to 720p30 playback.
Is it possible to keep the higher quality for playback through a 1920x1080 hd monitor?  Otherwise, would I be able to sync a 1920x1080 mov file to a new iPad or other device?
Not on your current device. As previously stated, the latest generation of iPhone, iPad, and TV devices support a maximum 1080p30 playback capability but may be limited to lower resdolutions depending on your method of connection to your monitor. This information can be found on the Apple web site TechSpecs page for each respective device.

  • HT204400 I have an old single 2.4 ghz router. If I upgrade to a new high speed router will I get better streaming video?

I Have an old single 2.4 GHz router. If I upgrade to a new high speed router will I get improved streaming of  videos?
    thanks.

It depends on what's rate limiting - if it's your wifi maybe, if your internet connection is slow the router won't make a huge difference though some products are better with poor lines.
Can you hook up a laptop to the router via ethernet and test the internet speed via speedtest.net?

  • Road Runner High Speed Connection

Road Runner High Speed is supposed to provide me with 5 megabits per sec but I'm only getting 4.7 megabits. Is that considered too small an amount of difference to matter? I don't want to have to wait all day for a technician to come over and give me a new modem if it doesn't make much difference. A friend of mine says that I'm "sharing" the 5 megabits with everyone who has Road Runner in my building and that's why it's less than 5 megabits. Is this the case? To measure your speed of your internet connection go to speakeasy.net for a free test.

You are getting the full speed. 4.7 MBs per sec on a 5 Mbps line is outstanding. The missing amount is due to overhead.
Your friend is partly correct. Cable internet is a "shared" service. The more users online the less bandwidth each user receives. However, RR has been very good about providing adequate bandwidth to maintain throughput by adding more servers when the user load increases. But this is not the reason your throughput speed is slightly below 5 Mbps. About that your friend is way off base. This is in contrast to DSL whose speed is a function of distance from the server. The farther you are from the server the slower the speed. However, DSL is usually slower than cable for the same cost of service.

  • Onboard Wait On High Speed Capture

I would like for an onboard program to wait for a high speed capture signal from a trigger input. Unfortunately, I have not had success with the flex_wait_on_condition function; it has always timed out before detecting the event. However, calls to the function flex_read_hs_cap_status identify that the high speed capture line is indeed toggling faster than the 3 second timeout. I use the following sequence of functions to configure the high speed capture:
    flex_configure_hs_capture(m_BoardID, NIMC_AXIS2, NIMC_HS_LOW_TO_HIGH_EDGE, 0);
    flex_begin_store(m_BoardID, ProgramNumber);
    flex_enable_hs_capture(m_BoardID, NIMC_AXIS2, NIMC_TRUE);
    flex_wait_on_condition(m_BoardID, NIMC_AXIS2, NIMC_WAIT, NIMC_CONDITION_HIGH_SPEED_CAPTURE, 0, 0,
    NIMC_MATCH_ANY, 30, 0);
    flex_end_store(m_BoardID, ProgramNumber);
Axis 2 is configured as a open loop stepper axis with encoder resource 2 mapped to it.
Any thoughts as to why this wouldn't work?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion. It seems to work fairly well, although there is some delay between the trigger event and the execution of the critical section of code.
Are you aware of a method to speed up execution of an on-board program? The critical section of code in the attached program fragment takes about 4ms to execute. With the added delay of the polled high speed capture line, I am limited to a ~150 Hz loop. I would like to increase the execution time by about twice.
Also, a command from the host computer seems to preempt the on-board program, causing it to take up to ten times as long to complete. Is there a way to set the priority of the on-board program task above host communication?
    Thanks for you assistance,
    Mike

  • VERIZON CHANGED HIGH SPEED DSL AT CENTRAL OFFICE AFTER I HAD 7.840 MBPS FOR MORE THAN 10 MONTHS!!!

ALL OF THE SUDDEN VERIZON DECIDES IN LATE APRIL THAT I SHOULD HAVE 7.1 MBPS INSTEAD OF THE 7.840 MBPS I HAVE BEEN HAVING FOR MORE THAN 10 MONTHS. AS A MATTER OF FACT, AFTER A LOT OF DISCONNECTIONS SUFFERED IN MARCH/APRIL 2012 BECAUSE VERIZON WAS DOING SOMETHING IN THEIR CENTRAL OFFICE WITHOUT TELLING TO THEIR CUSTOMERS, AND HAVING TO REPLACE ALL OF THE DSL FILTERS, AND TWO MODEMS... I GOT THE D-LINK WORKING AT 7.840 MBPS. AS A MATTER OF FACT, VERIZON TECHNICIAN CAME TO MY HOME AND WE DID INSTALL THE NEW MODEM AT THAT VERY SPEED, WHICH WAS AGREED MORE THAN 1 YEAR AGO AFTER DOING A LOT OF TESTING TO ENSURE THE STABILITY IN THE CONNECTION. ALL OF THE SUDDEN, AFTER THE 20-DAY HONEYMOON WITH MY NEW MODEM, I NOTICED THAT MY SPEED WAS NOT THE SAME, AND FOUND OUT THAT THE IP WAS CHANGED AND THE SPEED SETTING DROPPED TO 7.1 MBPS. NOW VERIZON CLAIMS THAT MY CONTRACT WAS FOR A MAXIMUM OF 7.1 MBPS WHICH IS NOT TRUE BECAUSE I WAS IN THE 7-15 MBPS RANGE!!! AS A MATTER OF FACT I COULD GO EVEN OVER 8 MBPS BUT BECAUSE OF MY LOCATION, RELATIVELY FAR AWAY FROM THE CENTRAL OFFICE AND AFTER A LOT OF TESTING, 7.840 MBPS WAS THE MOST CONVENIENT SPEED. VERIZON CHANGES THEIR POLICIES NOT NOTIFYING THE CUSTOMERS, THEY DO WORK INTERRUPTING THE SERVICE WITHOUT NOTIFYING. I AM GOING TO WAIT AND SEE WHAT THEY DO IN THIS CASE. IF THIS IS NOT SOLVED PROPERLY... GOOD BYE VERIZON, AND HELLO TIME WARNER CABLE!!! SO, VERIZON BE PREPARED TO LOSE ANOTHER LOYAL CUSTOMER FOR MORE THAN 9 YEARS!!! THAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH VERIZON, THEY ARE SO DEDICATED TO GET NEW CUSTOMERS THAT FORGET ABOUT THEIR OLD LOYAL ONES... UNFORTUNATELY, THERE ARE CONSEQUENCES... AND THOSE ARE THAT YOU WILL LOSE THE OLD ONES SOON BECAUSE YOUR LACK OF CARE ABOUT THEM!!! ONCE YOU ARE HOOKED WITH VERIZON, THEY THINK THEY GOTCHA FOREVER... LET'S WAIT AND SEE...

Believe or not... That 20% does make a difference... In one of my games, I used to have 5.3 secs of response time, now it does not lower from 7.8. By the way, even my PC worked faster  when I had that little higher speed... I know the changes were done without my knowledge because for a period of 2 weeks I got lot of unstability in my connection that I never got for years before... After 20 days with the first IP assigned to the new modem, the speed dropped like Verizon was running a program to levelize such an speed.
At the end, what really bothers me, is that the 7.840 Mbps was a speed agreed with Verizon, their technicians, their supervisors at the CO, and it was fully documented, and all of the sudden because an "internal change in their policies" that agreement was broken... I am currently making arrangements to have FIOS installed at home, subject to an scouting visit from Verizon to evaluate the feasibility of its installation according to my internal wiring limitations. I have to give them a try... No doubt that it would me cheaper and much faster than the high speed enhanced internet connection that I currently have. Let's wait and see...
Thank you for your interest in my case and observations made too.

  • High speed U-Verse internet equipment fee

Hello, I recently just noticed on my bill a equipment fee and when I purchased the services I bought the modem for $100 extra thinking I would save money. I just last night decided to up my speed and saw the equipment fee that I didn't even know I was paying. So my question is can I get my back from all the months I paid and or get that fee waived off my bill?

Ok and yes I was getting charged the equipment fee prior to upgrading. So due to me upgrading I'll get charged the fee I don't see how that constitutes as a new Install but ok.
    Here's the info from TOS:

AT&T will make available to you certain equipment (including a modem/gateway, or Optical Network Terminal ("ONT"), all of which is herein collectively referred to as "U-verse Equipment"), required for your Service. If you have not purchased U-verse Equipment from AT&T or if previously purchased U-verse Equipment is beyond the one (1) year warranty period (from date of installation) and requires replacement then you agree to pay a monthly equipment fee for the U-verse Equipment, as part of your purchase of or continued use of the Service and/or other U-verse services. Equipment fee/Purchase options depend on the AT&T U-verse services you order and the installation options you choose
