High System Temperature

Hi,
I am running Arch Linux with XFCE4. My system is really high on temperature which forces fan to run 24X7 and hence poor battery life. I usually get 45-50 degree Celsius on windows but i am getting around 65 with just browser open on Arch. I have configured TLP, Powertop (would be nice if it could permanently save its recommendation), thinkfan and power regression solution suggested by phoronix. I have a Thinkpad T420.

Thanks for replying. I have Thinkpad T420i (4177CTO) with i7 Dual Core 2620M 2.7 Ghz Intel processor, 8 GB RAM, Intel HD 3000 (integrated) and Nvidia NVS 4200 1 Ghz GPU, and 500 GB 7200 RPM spinning-disk hard drive.

Installed lm_sensors and ran sensor-detect to locate sensors using command find /sys/devices -type f -name "temp*_input"
I have thinkpad_acpi, tp_smapi, coretemp in modules section of rc.conf and thinkfan in daemons.
Installed thinkfan and added options thinkpad_acpi fan_control=1 to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.d.conf and created /etc/defualt/thinkfan with START=yes
I have TLP installed and added it to daemons.
I came from Ubuntu due to heat problems. I think this laptop suffers from power regression issues. I updates to grub2 and added pcie_aspm=force to /etc/default/grub but i couldn't do sudo update-grub but pcie_aspm=force seems to have replicated itself to kernel line of grub.cfg
I have ran Powertop. I wish if i could make it permanent.

CPU high system usage

My laptop regularly slows way down and gets super choppy, and the Activity Monitor shows high system percentage during, usually up into the 70s. This happens when I try to watch videos online, play games, or even load too many pages at once. I have to close the tab or quit the application to get it going again. This occurs with all applications (Word, Excel, games, etc). Even after I install updates and restart I get the same problem. I've tried eliminating tabs and applications up at once, tried clearing space and uninstalling applications - same issue.

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to
a buildup of dust on the logic board
high ambient temperature
a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, or a voltage sensor
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board. If it happens only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That may be normal on some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a bad fan or sensor.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models may cause this issue. If applicable, test by disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

K7N2 PC Alert System temperature

My brothers an my computer are near enough the same spec except I have an XP2800 and he has an XP3000. We both have a K7N2 Delta ILSR motherboard.
I am using his computer at the moment an noticed his system temperature is half of what mine is?? His is only 21C whilst mine is always around about 40C is there any reason for this?
Only difference I can see is that my Mobo was made in Taiwan and his was made in China or visa versa.
Anyone have any input into this? I believe this is why my computer freezes if I set BIOS to the high settings as the system temp is getting to hot.

MSI P6NGM-L system temperature and processor fan speed

Hi folks,
I've got a MSI P6NGM-L board that is reaching a system temperature of 46ºC-47ºC at everyday load (not playing games or doing heavy work... just browsing, email, text editor, etc). My case has got a frontal and rear 120mm (exaustor) fan, and my processor (Core 2 Duo E7200), an Akasa AK-965BL cooler. My graphics board is a XFX Geforce 9800GT with Zalman FC-ZV9 cooler. Overall temperature is just fine, except for the system temperature, that is 32ºC when the system is turned on and is cold, and reaches about 47ºC after some time and using. I disabled the onboard NVIDIA on BIOS, but that didn't make any difference. Is that temperature OK for my configuration, or somehow high?
I thought about taking off the northbridge heatsink and applying Arctic Silver 5 in it, but I don't know if that would make any difference, and it would give me a big job, because I would have to take the board off... so I don't know if it's worth.
Another question, is P6NGM-L board PWM compatible? I tried using speedfan to control the processor's temperature but it says it's at 100%, and I know the cooler is in silent operation. If so, what software should I use to control the processor fan?

I don't have a way to measure my room's temperature, but it's quite hot... something like 26ºC.
I thought that with all the cooling I've got inside my case the system temp would get lower, but it is still the same under normal load, even since my case had only one exaustor and stock coolers.
What about the processor's fan speed? Can I really change it by software? I plan to do some overclocking, so I would like to do tests with the processor cooler in full speed... I've googled all the way around, but couldn't find substancial information about P6NGM-L support for that.

System temperature at 90C in Portege R700

When I switch on my Portege R700 and immediately open the Toshiba PC health program (monitoring the sensors) it shows the CPU temperature to be very low, of course, while the System temperature is already at 90C.
As a consequence (I think but I might be wrong) the fan spins at almost maximal speed.
The situation does not change in time: the CPU temperature stays typically under 40C, System temperature at 90C, fan always spinning fast.
Is this normal? The Cooling test program says everything is fine.

First of all I have to say that many 3rd party tools does not read the temperature values correctly. If the notebook does not shut down automatically, then the temperature is not too high. There is a internal hardware protection which would shut down the notebook to prevent the hardware from damage.
But of course, the fan might run faster if the temperature is higher. This is nothing unusual. As suggested by Jeka. Try to clean the cooling vents using compressed air spray.
In very rare cases the temperature might be higher if fresh air cannot circulate due to clogged cooling grilles.

what chipset temeprature u guys have on this board?(in bios system temperature). I have about 42C in idle and about 47-48C on full load...

System temperature

Hi All
This may seem like a silly question but can anybody tell me why the K8N Neo Platinum board does not report the system temperature? I though all modern motherboards report the system/ case temperature?

I'm using a Zalman CNS700AlCu - I'd prefer the pure Cu but I picked up a pair of the AlCu ones at half the price of the Cu version.

For the NB I used a 50mm x 10mm case fan, just like you can see in the second picture in this thread:

And I built a small bracket to hold it a few mm above the NB heatsink as I couldn't see any way to attach the fan to the heatsink. This fan runs around 4600 rpm.
You could attach a 40mm fan, but that runs at much higher speed, it isn't really powerful enoigh, and it's very noisy.

see above. Pleas note these are the temps reported in HW Monitor in the bios. CoreCenter reports different (and very erratic) temperatures, plus somestimes it reports the fan rpm at around half their actual speed... I think there is someting seriously wrong with it.
I think CPU temps over mid 50s and NB temps over mid 40s are an indication of something wrong, and bad for your computer's long term health. The max I have ever seen in an nForece2 mobo is 40C (NB) and 502C (CPU) and that machine is o'clocked by 40%.

Hi! First post for me, here.... I know that this problem has been "overdiscussed" but I'd like to report my experience and hear your opinions. So please, don't blame me...
I'm talking about the "system Temperature" readings on K8N Neo2 Platinum board. I've read many complains about temperature sensors on this mobo.

I'm watercooling for the first time. Got everything installed 'till seen strange temperatures readings. So I put outside of the case the mainboard with CPU and Chipset waterblocks attached. My videocard is a Leadtek 6800GT and it gets pretty hot: I've excluded it from my test thinking was the cause of the chipset overheating problem and replaced with an Asus Geforce2 card.
The temperatures are checked only in BIOS (modded v1.8Rev.3)
Ambient temperature is about 28°C.
While CPU temperature keeps around 30-34°C, the "system temperature" goes up around 50°C. I put some little heatsinks over the hot mosfets (40°C) near EIDE ports and on the chip on the right of the motherboard chipset without luck.
Then I put a fan on the winbond chip and seen the temperature drop till 30°C. Checking with an external digital sensor confirm this result.
So my question is: "System temperature" = "Winbond chip" temperature?
Considering that the chipset (with its waterblock) is barely warm, how could Winbond chip accurately report mainboard/chipset temperature if it's the primary cause of heating?
Secondly, without aircooling, Winbond chip keeps a very long time to go back to high temperatures and, however, it never gets 50°C. Now it's 37-40 °C. This is a very strange behaviour, don't you think?
Please tell me if I'm wrong.

Is system temperature = northbridge temp?

Hi, guys!
After rebuilding the box the projector is in my home theater became so quiet that the noisiest thing was the HTPC...in the next room! Behind a closed door! So I started with the PSU, changing to a ThermalTake Dual2 fan, which I'll experiment with the potmeter and see how far down I can set the RPM before the PSU heatsinc gets too hot.
Then I put a Zalman flower cooler on the CPU - with my Athlon XP1800 I could set the fan speed to around 1600 RPM and still it stays at 46 C after an hour with 100 % CPU use (coding a high bitrate DiVX file just to test it). The system temp is at 34 C, but the Northbridge fan actually makes most noise of all the fans on the PC now.
Does the system temperature monitor the Northbridge temperature, so I can see there if the fan is too slow? I want to slow it down by settin the voltage to 7 V with a kit I got with another fan. Does that sound dangerous? 8)

Why do Mac games have higher system preferences compared to Windows games?

I am wondering why Mac games have higher system preferences compared to Windows games?
For example "The Movies" game on Mac requires:
Mac: OSX 10.4 Tiger or later,
PPC G4 1.67 GHz,
512MB RAM,
64MB video card,
DVD drive (minimum)
Whilst on Windows:
PC: Windows 98SE or later
800 MHz CPU
256MB RAM
DirectX 9.0c compatible sound and video card.
Now anyone can see the amount Windows needs compaired to Mac but why such a huge leap.
And this isn't only on "The Movies" it's the same with "Sims 2" and "Age of Empires"

What exactly does "system temperature" mean in bios?

Hi.
I have a Ne0 FIS2R PCB 1 with frequent game crashes & i recently installed asetek´s watercooling kit wich is cooling the cpu & Northbridge.
The bios says the CPU is 34 Degrees Celsius which is perfectly fine.
But the system temperature says 52 Degrees.
Is system temperature the air temperature inside the case? The manual doesn´t say.

I use the imac mainly for editing Video which when doing so it has reached temperatures of near to 60° C which causes the program to become unstable and needs to be cooled down to operate correctly.
An Apple technician (by phone) advised me to download an smcfancontrol. This allows each individual fan to increase speed and also advises the current temperature at °C. The smcfancontrol has been downloaded but this has not resolved the problem. By increasing the speed of the fan more heat is generated and creates additional noise.
I have since taken the iMac to an Apple Store for examination as suggested by APPLECARE when the fans were found to be working correctly. An Apple Store technician carried out a test, but not whilst working under the pressure of FINAL CUT PRO when the iMac generates a high temperature.
The Temperature Specification for this model is
Operating Temperature 20 °c to 35°C
Storage Temp.47°c
Clearly the temperature my iMac is operating at is excessive and could cause the computer to break down prematurely. Has anyone experienced this problem.

When was the last time you cleaned/vacuumed out all of your iMac's vents, slots and ports.
You need to do this with the iMac powered down, disconnected from power and everything disconnected.
Lay your iMac, screen down, on a soft surface, like a heavy towel. Use a small electronics vac, or portable or full size vac with hose and a crevice tool attachment and carefully and slowly vacuum every vent, slot and port on your iMac.
Then reconnect everything up, power up and download and install iStat Pro. Start working, then report the temps of your iMac after this has been done.
When using SMCFan Control, it is important not to run the fans at too high an RPM. This doesn't generate heat on its own, but will suck in more dust, lint and dirt into your iMac, and that will be the cause of additonal increases in heat.
I run my fans in the range of 1400-1600 RPMs. You can go as high as 1800 RPMs but it is important to keep the RPM range below either 1800 or below 2000 RPMs.
I, also, run a very small desktop fan pointed toward the upper back of my iMac to keep temps down even further.

Power manager improve system temperature rating

I am running my t61p on Windows 7. How can I improve my system temperature rating?
AT the moment it is stuck at 5/7 green dots. I cannot find any options to improve this. Is it actually possible to change this? If so, how is it done?

please try to click on you battery symbol once, the a menu will open, a slider you can move it to the left, then power consumption will be reduced to minimum.

Can high cpu temperature melt processor?

Hallo, mayby stupid question, but i was just wondering, if high temperature inside my macbook air (2012 i5) can melt my processor or something like that...
I am talking about 85 C continuosly1 or max 2 hours per day at cpu (oc course not every day) :/ i dont want to demage my mac...

High enough temperatures can melt anything, but your mackbook air is designed to operate continuously, with fans to manage CPU temp. As long as you are in an environment where the air temperature is within standard (10 to 35C), your macbook is fine.

Combo: High CPU temperature

Hi,
My PC CPU temperature is 43C when idle. But it rises up to 60C when under load.
The system temperature ranges from 35 to 38 depending on system load.
I have double checked CPU fan, it is perfectly attached.
CPU clock is 3.0 GB 1MB, 512 DDR1 @ 400 MHz
I am running the system on the default clocks (No overclocking).
3 Fans for system cooling.
Is this normal temperature?
