High Virtual memory usage when using Pages 2.0.2

Hey there,
I was just wondering whether there had been any other reports of unusually high memory usage when using Pages 2.0.2, specifically Virtual memory. I am running iWork 06 on the Mac listed below and Pages has been running really slowly recently. I checked the Activity Monitor and Pages is using hardly any Physical memory but loads of Virtual memory (so much so that the Page outs are almost as high as the Page ins (roughly 51500 page ins / 51000 page outs).
Any known problems, solutions or comments for this problem? Thanks in advance

I don't know if this is specifically what you're seeing, but all Cocoa applications, such as Pages, have an effectively infinite Undo. If you have any document that you've been working on for a long time without closing, that could be responsible for a large amount of memory usage.
While it's good practice to save on a regular basis, if you're making large amounts of changes it's also a good idea to close and reopen your document every once in awhile, simply to clear the undo. I've heard of some people seeing sluggish behavior after working on a document for several days, which cleared up when the document was closed and reopened.

  • Massive memory usage when using latest version of final cut, 10 minutes after restart.

Hey I am really struggling with using Final Cut Pro X and I suspect there is some software issue.
I am editing a one minute video clip, the video files are 1080 h264. I restart my computer and only open final cut. After 10 minutes of editing I cant barely navigate my computer anymore as it is going so slow, until eventually I have to force reboot my computer. I can scarcly export anything out of final cut, when I do my computer feels like its about to die and if it exports I seem to get broken frames and/or missing media.
I reinstalled my mac only about 2 months ago.
    System specs.
    Mac book pro.
    13-inch, Late 2011
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
On my previous mac book pro (early 2010, 4 gm ram), running snow leopard and previous versions of final cut I was able to edit 3, 1 hour documentaries with very little problem, but now I cant even manage a one minute clip.
Not sure what to do. Here is a screen shot of my memory usage. Im getting massive swap memory and lots of inactive memory. It seems very strange. Especially after only 10 minutes running only final cut.

FCP is only using 409 MBs of memory out of your 4 GBs. But whatever else you have open is using up virtually all the physical RAM you have. This is forcing the memory manager to page memory out to the disk-based VM file. That's a major reason for major slowdowns.
You have 4 GBs of RAM. How many applications are you running concurrently? If you look at Page outs: you will note the positive number in parentheses. That means your computer is hitting the hard drive a lot because the memory demands are too high. If possible cut down on how many concurrent applications you run or put more RAM into the computer, if that's possible.

The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • High browser memory usage when streaming video

I'm using Flex 4 and the Spark VideoPlayer.  I'm creating an application where you switch between several videos.  I noticed that the browser memory usage increases significantly when changing videos and never releases the memory.  I ran tests where the video is being served over a content delivery network that has Flash Media Server, so the content shouldn't be caching in the browser.  I profiled my Flex application and the memory usage increases slightly when changing videos.  I think that is attributed to this bug: https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/SDK-25785.  However, my browser memory usage increases about 20MB when changing videos.  The video file I used to test is an mp4 file that is about 3MB in size.  I tried testing using a small video (about 300Kb) and noticed an increase of about 5MB in browser memory usage every time I replayed it.  So it looks like it's based on the video file size.  I was testing on Firefox and noticed the same results in Chrome.  Any idea why the browser memory usage would increase so much every time the video is loaded?
    Thanks in advance.

That's normal for your machine. Video is fairly demanding in the integrated Intel GPU in that machine. Your CPU has to do much of the video processing. As a result, your fans will speed up to cool off the CPU which is working fairly hard. It's completely normal and all of the MacBooks with the same GPU experience the same thing.

  • High virtual memory after sleep with Mavericks

Here is a screenshot of activity monitor below, right after lifting the lid on my MacBook Air 2013 running Mavericks 10.9.2 (upgraded from Mountain Lion).
It's in french but you can see that the virtual memory is running higher than I would expect (IMO). There is no slowdown of the OS, no beach balls, no memory pressure, ever.
This does NOT happen on my Macbook Pro 2012 (standard 13", no SSD) in identical conditions under the same OS version.
Here what i do in more detail. I run several apps at once:
    - MS Word (3 ou 4 docs)
    - Pages (1 or 2 docs)
    - Preview (1 or 2 medium or large PDFs)
    - Mail
    - iTunes
    - Safari (no more than 5 or 6 tabs at once)
    - Messages
    - A spell checker (Antidote. Yes, a french one)
    - Zotero
    - Activity monitor
RAM used is never above 6 Gb, and some it is usually cache anyway.
At the end of the day I close the lid to put the MBAir to sleep. The next day I see this high (or is it really that high??) virtual memory usage, with swap used anywhere from 300 to 900 Mb.
Computer runs smoothly, no hang ups, everything is seamless!
Is this normal operating behavior for a Macbook Air??
I know Mavericks introduced new RAM management, but should I just stop looking at Activity Monitor like I have OCD (I dont. I think.) or should I call Apple? Or do a clean install?
Suggestions welcome! If I'm missing info please advise. If a thread already exists about this I didn't find it...

You are not alone in being baffled and worried about the memory readings in the Activity Monitor.  There are many postings on this.  Mavericks uses memory quite differently than previous OS X versions and so the numeric memory usage readings no longer mean what they used to.  The best indicator now is the Memory Pressure graph, which on yours is low and green (good).
Computer runs smoothly, no hang ups, everything is seamless!
Yep.  Mavericks runs great.  There is nothing you need to change or be worried about, espeically with 8 GB of RAM.
should I just stop looking at Activity Monitor like I have OCD
Yes, unless you want to watch the green Memory Pressure graph but that would be booring.

  • Memory problems when using alias channel strips (3.0.2)

I'm having memory issues when using alias channel strips.  What is happening is I create one instance of the plugin, say Massive.  Then make a bunch of other alias on different patches.  When looking at the memory usage everytime I add and alais it increases the memory usage by an amount the same as the origional plugin.  ie. add 3 alias and you have 3 times more memory usage.  See attached photos.
Original plugin instance ~80mb memory usage
Adding 3 Alias channel strips.  ~330mb memory usage
By comparison here is the usage by adding 3 brand new instance of the plugins. ~160mb memory usage
By comparison it is using less memory by having 4 seperate instances of the plugin compared to using 3 alias's of the origional.  This doesn't make sense since the whole point of an alias is to save memory by only loading one instance of the plugin.
    Anyone have any thoughts?
    Jon

What's interesting is that if I, starting with a blank concert, add a Massive to a patch and then make an alias the memory is as you say. But if I make a duplicate of the inital patch and then make alias's of that the memory is lower.
Are you seeing the same with the built-in plug-ins?

  • When using Pages, I can't seem to print an envelope.  I use file, then print, and see the printer icon come up in the dock showing it received the info but then quickly disappears and nothing gets printed. When I check the printer queue there is nothing

Bear with me, I've not done this before.  I can't seem to reliably print an envelope when using Pages.  I go to "file" click "print", click "ok", see the printer icon flash in the dock with a red "1" (indicating a printing job), but then the icon disappears and nothing gets printed.  I checked the printers queue and there is nothing there.  The funny thing is, after many times hitting "print", twice I've had envelopes printed.  ???  What's the secret?

Have you tested it from other software, such as TextEdit to establish that it is in fact Pages that is the problem?
Step us through Print Setup... and what you select when you send it off to print.

    From the
    Brother MFC-6800 Printer's User Guide:
    How Can I load envelopes:
You can load envelopes from the multi-purpose sheet feeder. Your appliaction software must be set up to print the envelope size you are using. This is usually done in the Page Setup or Document Setup mebnu of your software. Refer to your appliaction manual
It also mentions an issue with paper thickness.

  • URL checksum when using page alias

    Hello to all.
I'm using Apex v4.1.1.00.23, and I'm having a problem when using page aliases in URLs.
When creating a list with links to Apex pages, if I use a page alias, then no checksum is generated. I tried this using the "classic" way to create list entries (i.e. "Create list entry" and entering desired values in the "Target" region), and also using a dynamic list and an SQL query.
    For example:
    SELECT 1
    ,'First page'
    ,apex_util.prepare_url( 'f?p=&APP_ALIAS.:1:&APP_SESSION.::NO:1::', p_checksum_type => 'SESSION')
    FROM DUAL
    UNION ALL
    SELECT 1
    ,'Second page'
    ,apex_util.prepare_url( 'f?p=&APP_ALIAS.:second_page:&APP_SESSION.::NO:second_page::', p_checksum_type => 'SESSION')
    FROM DUAL
For the second link, I always get "Session State Protection Violation", but the first one works fine.
Both pages have the "Page Access Protection" set to "Arguments Must Have Checksum".
I tried to set up an example on apex.oracle.com, but it seems that in v4.2 this problem is fixed :)
So, is there any way to use page aliases while session state protection is active?
Thank you for any help that may come by,
    best regards.

One dead pixel.  Always the same one, only when using Pages.  Has anyone else seen this?
    MacBook Air 11", 1.6 GHz Core i5 CPU, OS 10.8, Pages 4.2

This has been happening to me ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion. Certainly a software issue, I expected an update to iWork to resolve this after the release of 10.8 but it seems Apple have all but forgotten about their iWork suite...

when using Pages to create an EPUB file, how would I force a page brake?

Sory Peter but you don't seem to understand.
If you pick up an e-book by random on the iBook Store, you will see that professional e-books ALWAYS start their chapters at the top of a new page, whatever the reader, the color of the page or the size of the text are.
I know how to add a new chapter with the use of the appropriate style in Pages but I want to be able to divide SECTIONS as well.
What I want to to do is to force a page break in between two paragraphs and apparently, this option is not possible with Pages.

  • Httpd high virtual memory???

    Hi,
I opened up Activity Monitor today and there are two processes I've never noticed before: httpd (user = root) and httpd (user = _www). Am a little bit concerned over them, as they are using >1.4Gb virtual memory, and have appeared out of nowhere.
I read a post about Parental Controls, but they're all turned off, including on Guest Account.
Is any body able to shed any light on this??
    Many thanks,
    Paul

As mentioned httpd is your Apache Web server which is enabled via System Preferences -> Sharing -> Web Sharing.
As to the Virtual Memory. Do not worry about how much virtual memory any application uses. Its Virtual
The VSIZE consists of memory mapped files (such as the executable code), shared libraries which every application maps in their virtual address range, but the operating system only loads one copy (or parts of one copy) into memory. Virtual memory also includes sparse holes of address ranges that the application may later ask have some real memory. Some of these sparse holes are just the operating system making sure it does not create a range too small, and since virtual address ranges are cheap, the OS reserves a very large range.

  • High memory usage when many tabs are open (and closed)

When I open Firefox the memory usage is about 70-100 MB RAM. When I'm working with Firefox I often open 15-20 tabs at once, then I close them and open others. Memory usage increaes up to 450 - 500 MB RAM. After closing the tabs the usage usually decreases, but after sometime. It starts decreasing very slow and never comes back to the level from the beginning. After few hours of work Firefox uses about 400 MB RAM even if one tab is open. First I thought it's because of my plugins (Firebug, Speed Dial, Adlock Plus) but I've checked it and it's not. I reinstalled Firefox but the problem occurs as well. I'm not sure if it's normal. • Ultra high memory usage when deleting a slide show

    Hallo,
I have a DVD project with several menus and slideshows and a huge flowchart. I wanted to delete one of the slide shows. What happened then was that the memory usage rised up to over 2 GB. Not the usage of the exe shown in the windows task manager under "processes", but the swap file usage.
The first time I waited for like 5 minutes, and then Encore closed itself. Without any error message.
The next time I waited as long again, but then the swap file usage went down slowly again. After that Encore refreshed its window. The flow chart was what you could best describe as "broken". Encore then stated some abnormal condition and offered me to save the file, and recommended to save it under a different file name. I clicked on "ok", but instead of a file save dialog a C++ runtime error box appeared. I click "ok" for that, then the "you should save but under a different name" box appeared again. I clicked on "ok" again, the C++ error reappeared, and after clicking on "ok" there Encore closed itself.
I made a screenshot on which you can see the high swap file memory usage and the broken flowchart. You can download the screenshot under
    http://www.digitale-bibliothek.de/Downloads/ScreenEncoreDVD.jpg
I will now try to first delete all references to the slideshow in the flow chart. But as I cannot delete an asset that is still used in a slideshow or a timeline, Encore DVD should also prevent me from deleting objects that are used in the flowchart, if it is such a problem for Encore to delete the object then.
    Regards,
    Christian Kirchhoff

I'm a little confused as to where you tried to delete the slideshow from.
Was it from the actual Project Browser, where all the assets are listed?
Can you try deleting the surplus slideshow from there, and let us know what happens please?
