High VLAN Interface utilization (6500/sup720)

Can anyone tell me why a VLAN interface would show 100% utilization for a givin VLAN? This is a sup720 we're talking about.
I understand that the bandwidth of a virtual interface is 1Gig but I thought this was more related to routing metric.
Users were actually seeing performance issues until we changed how the servers on this particular interface were replicating. Once we did this the VLAN interface utilization went down and performance went up.
It doesn't make sense to me that the VLAN interface would limit the actual throughput of the various ports that are mapped to it. Throughput should be related to the switch module 61xx, 65xx, 67xx and how it interfaces to the backplan and the backplan speed itself.
Any insights would be helpful......

If the layer 3 SVI was showing 100% that means it had a lot of traffic that was being layer 3 processed switched instead of hardware switched . Normally most traffic is hardware switched within the ASICS and never even gets passed up to that layer . What would cause this I'm not sure .

  • VLAN Interface Utilization

    Hello,
I have Cisco Works LMS version 3.0.1 that manages the Core switch and the access layer switches. Can I use Cisco Works LMS to measure the throughput of the traffic passing from/to a specific interface VLAN? If yes, do I need Cisco LMS only or I have to have Health and Utilization Monitor (HUM) installed?
    Kind Regards

  • 6500 VLAN Interface (SVI) Throughtput

    Guys,
Very quick one, does anyone have any stats on throughputs on a VLAN Interface on a 6500 MSFC2
I just remember the old days where if you had an RSM, and it had a VLAN interface, the throughtput was 400Mbps (or sommat like that)
Can a 6500 MSFC2 SVI run at a full gig?
Sorry if this sounds a little crazy.
    Kindest regards,
    Ken

That makes a lot of sense.
I just did some research, and yes it was 400M on a 5500 and now 1000 for the 6500 with an MSFC 2, so yes, they have not increased it that much becuase As you say, it should all be cef-based MLS or traditional MLS based

  • Interface VLAN Bandwidth Utilization Reporting

I am currently evaluating a few products for Network Management and Monitoring. The question i have is, how is % utilization calculated for a virtual interface? Some tools have reported that one of our interface vlans is at 320% utilization. Obviously, this is not accurate. If anyone can give me advice on how to accurately report interface utilization percentage on a virtual interface, I would appreciate it.

No, changing the vlan speed will not influence the physical interface's speed.
    So, no need for that.

  • EIGRP IPv6 and VLAN interfaces

We've found that we have to set static link local IPs when two routers might peer over multiple VLAN interfaces.
The issue is that the routers, 6500s with sup720s, utilize the same autoconfig'd link local address on each VLAN interface.   EIGRP IPv6 refuses to peer with the other router on multple VLANs when the link local are the same.
Anyone else encounter this?   Did we miss a config option that would force unique link locals on different VLANs interfaces?
Because of this issue, we've made it our best practice to configure static link local for all inter-router transits.

    HI Gary,
I had a setup with SU720 on 2 7600s and I am able to enable the neighborship without any issues. I didnt configure static link local as below,

  • LMS 4.2 specific interface utilization report

          Hi,
is there a way to create a interface utilization report only for a specific port? Like switch1->interface fa0/10
Right now i can only choose all ports from a device?
    Thank you.
    Chris

So, the new weekly report does not show the high Utilizations anymore, but there is a new problem:
In the "Report Details", there are 7 devices and 126 interfaces, but in the "Interface Utilization Summary", there are only 49 Interfaces.
I have added a screenshot, so that you can see, what I mean.

  • VPLS with IP in the vlan interface

    I have this config in a Cat6500:
    l2 vfi XXX manual
    vpn id XXX
    neighbor 1.1.1.1
    interface vlan XXX
    ip addrr 2.2.2.2
    xconnect vfi XXX
With this config I can't reach from 6500 other equipments on this vlan with vpls.
It is ok to setup an ip address in a VLAN interface even if the interface have VPLS "xconnect" configuration?

    Hi Guys,
I would like to put my idea only but i do't know if it is correct or not.
but if we defice any ip address on the interface than this will help us to improve anything but will appear in the routing table of PE router and it could be a part of it's routing and MPLS which is not required.
secondly we are trying to emulate layer2 briedge accross the VPLS backbone not the Layer 3 switch domain. than it could be possible that you configure routing accross the backbone but there is no such kind of mechanism to enable routing.
    please rate if it helps.

  • FWSM vlan interface

Hello, quick question I hope someone can help with.
Is it possible for me to create 2 vlan interfaces on the 6500 and have them both in the same subnet?
For a specific customer requirement I would like to have a vlan interface on the 6500 as default gateway, sat in it's own vrf, and then route all traffic inbound and outbound to this vlan through the FWSM interface, preferably in the same subnet. I don't think this will be possible so just looking for confirmation either way.
As I will be running EIGRP between a pair of central 6500's and 2 remote offices it will make things much easier for me advertise the connected FWSM interfaces in to EIGRP for access in/out of all my VRF'd subnets. If I need another subnet for each VRF FWSM next hop then I'll have to reditribute a list of statics which I don't really want to do.
The reason I am not just using the FWSM as gateway is because I need to run HSRP across 3 different devices (another 6500 in a second suite), and failover FWSM will only give me 1 level of redundancy for those gateways.
Hope that makes sense, let me know if you have further questions.
    Thanks

Thanks Marvin. You do understand the question, and it occurred to me after writing the above that I could just use a single FWSM inside interface and route in and out of each VRF via that 1 interface (All VRF's belong to a single customer, just required for segregation of internal traffic).
The third 6500 running HSRP will be located in a DC 100km away connected via dual 1Gb circuits (3ms latency), and has it's own default route to a pair of ASA 5520's. If both FWSM's go down then the gateway will go live in the second site and traffic will be switched over our SP qinq tunnel to that gateway. Relevant BGP bits (MED), etc. will also be in place for seemless failover and traffic flow to and from the /23 pi range peered with the same ISP in each location..
    Thanks again.

  • Jumbo Frame - Enabling on a VLAN of CAT 6500 running IOS

Jumbo frames needs to be enabled on one of the vlan interface on Cisco 6500 IOS Switch.
    =================================================================
•1) Once enabled the mtu 9216 on the required vlan interface do we need to reload the switch to take effect (I believe that in some low end swicthes it needs a reload)
•2) If we enable only one Vlan interface, how about the other vlan interfaces(about 200 are on this switch)? Do we need to specify mtu1500 on other vlan interfaces?
I have read information at the following two links, but I still wish to reconfirm by asking the questions in this forum. Someone who has already implemented this may have gained more experience while implementing it on CAT 6500 IOS Switch.

You do not need to reboot your 6500 after you enable jumbo frames, but it is good idea to do it during an outage window. You only need to reboot smaller switches i.e. 3560, 3750, etc...after enabling jumbo frames. On these switches you can only enable it globally.  Only enable jumbo frames for the vlans you need.  You usually need jumbo frames for vlans connecting to the storage systems.
    Good Luck

  • Vlan Interface bit rate

    Hi
My management server see's Vlan interfaces at 1Gb interface. What is the actual Bit rate it can handle? lets say for a 6509E sup720 10gig.

    Hello pcConvert,
I usually use Lossless but seeing that you have an iBook, I wouldn't try that unless you have a small collection or a big external hard drive. I usually use my 250 GB FW800 drive to store my music instead of my main computer.
For portables, like the iPod, I usually just stick to 128 kbps.
If Lossless was not an option, I'd go to 192 at the very least if using MP3 or 128 for AACs.

  • SNMP polling of VLAN Interfaces on Switches/Routers

    Hi,
We were trying to poll VLAN interface traffic using IF-MIB for 6500 Switches/3560 Switches and 7600 Routers. We are getting correct values only for 6500 Switch which shows exactly the traffic passed through that vlan whereas 7600 shows only for SVI interface and 3560 doesn't show for SVI or VLAN.
We would like to know if there are any other MIB files we have to use to get the VLAN traffic statistics of these switches or routers.
    Thanks,
    NIEG team

When you poll the vlan info, what SNMP community are you using? On some devices you have to for example public@20 where 20 is the vlan in question.

  • HUM Interface utilization report error

    Hi Joe,
I have LMS 3.1 installed at one of our client site.
In HUM they are pulling the interface utilization repor

es comming in the reports are false. the values are in bytes/sec fomat. lets there is a link of 1 GbPS in one of my device. if i am converting the TX utilization in to Gbps it becames 4.04 Gbps. how it is possible that the tx load will reach to 4 Gbps on a 1 Gb link?
    Please help me.

You need to upgrade to 1.1.2 to get 64-bit support which is required for such high-speed interfaces.  This can be downloaded at http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/cw2000-hum .

  • Question on QoS for File-- SOAP synchronous high volume interface

Is it possible to have a File to SOAP (sender file adapter --> receiver SOAP adapter, synchronous - response needed by sender ) scenario with FIFO (first in first out). This is a high volume interface (about 8 messages/second). If FIFO possible, will a failed message block the succeeding messages?
My understanding is that QoS of receiver SOAP CC is Best Effort.
    Thank you.

yes..EOIO will block the queues if its predecessor are not in final state...
for ur design u can rfer the below wiki...instead of RFC u can use soap adapter..

    Hi Experts,
Our company have a Cisco PI 2.1 system, I want to monitoring some router's interface utilization.
I followed cisco prime training course to set up some config in cisco PI, but it's seemed to be not effective.

    It's a VM.
I chose the Express-Plus profile even though I could technically have used the Express profile for what they're managing. I always try to err on the side of more resources when building a management system. Getting a customer to adapt their workflow to properly leverage a NMS is hard enough without it also being a drag to use due to system sluggishness.
We're also running it on a nice new shiny data center - UCS B240 series blade with fast storage on Netapp SAS disks and connected directly to the 7010 core (via the Fabric Interconnect of course).
