Higher pixel camera

I want to know when (or if) Canon will be releasing a higher pixel count camera. I shoot a 5D Mark 2 now for my landscapes and I don't feel that the Mark 3 offers enough improvement over the Mark 2 to justify the cost.....I need more resolution and less noise!
Since Nikon's release of the D800, with it's MUCH higher resolution factor compared to any full-frame Canon product, I have been greatly disappointed that Canon has not been able to answer to such a competitive model with something of their own. I have been shooting Canon for almost 10 years and they have always stayed competitive...why not now!
I have already purchased a Nikon 14-24mm lens that I use with an adapter for my Canon body, because it is the sharpest wide angle variable lens on the market and KILLS the 17-40 OR the 16-35 Canon versions, that both fail miserably in their sharpness factor and have especially soft edges.
If Canon can't produce a better landscape camera, I'll have no choice but to follow in the footsteps of other professionals like Tom Till and Marc Adamus and switch to the Nikon system.
Wake up Canon, pull your head out and make it happen, I'm tired of waiting!

As always, people who have information cannot tell. And users like us have no clue. But unless they're releasing another model on top or on par with the 1DX, you'll not likely to see another full frame camera for at least 2 more years. And even if they release something like 1D series camera for high megapixel then it is going to cost a bunch too. So it makes more sense in your case to go with Nikon since you already like it so much. And when Canon finally release some high mega pixel camera for 5DMIV, Nikon may release D900 something even better like 60Mpx or something. Then you'll feel the frustration all over again. So it's better to switch.

Why does low resolution warning show when I used a high resolution camera

Hi,
I am just learning about iphoto, and have been uploading photos I took with a 4 mega-pixel camera. I have printed out photos at Kodak printers directly from the camera, and they came out great. However, when I upload the photos to the Mac, then burn them to a CD, and try to print them they come out blurry and have the low resolution warning. Does anyone know why that is happening? Is there a setting that decides the photo quality when pictures are uploaded?
Are the photos I have now "doomed" to be at low resolution?

The "share" function actually places a mini-library on the CD so that it can be loaded into another Mac that has iPhoto. Just like in your library, the CD will contain, for each photo, the original "out of the camera" version AND the most recently modified version AND a thumbnail for viewing within iPhoto. Apparently the thumbnail was the one that was inadvertently selected for printing and, of course, the resolution is minimal.
If you want to burn a CD for use on a PC or to give to your favorite photo-finisher, create a folder on the desktop and "File/Export" the contents of the album to that folder. Then, EXIT iPhoto and burn the CD with the contents of the desktop folder. After checking the CD and confirming that all is OK, you can trash that folder.

High speed cameras

not quite FCP related..well, sorta. anyhow, does anyone have any suggestions as far as high-speed cameras (500-1000fps) for outdoor, action-sport usage? i've checked into a few rental houses, and there's a decent variety, but i haven't used one before and don't know if there's a specific one that would work better than another. this would be used on snow (for snowboarding) but in warm temps (40-70 degrees F. You can snowboard/ski on Mt Hood in oregon in the summer, if you're wondering).
also, is there anything i need to be concerned with when importing and editing this footage in FCP?

i think, gardner, you're on the bleeding edge here. i can honestly say i've never in my several years here seen this come up.
my experience with super mo cams are reconfigured studio cams shooting 90fps into discrete r,g,b channels and then fed into an evs for even slower motion. feisty beasts i must say! also, i've yet to see a hd super mo. whenever i work an hd show and there's a mo, it's upconverted to hd from sd.

that being said, if you're working in standard definition, at the end of the day, it has to be ntsc 29.97 fps video, plain and simple. just because something was shot at 1000fps, it's still ntsc 29.97 fps video.

Sony Hybrid High Definition Camera

I bought a new high definition camera by sony. I could not read either the standard or high definition files with imovie so I purchased final cut which is suppose to read AVCHD files. I still can't read them at all. Are sony files proprietary format? Do I need some kind of converter? It does not recognize my camera at all (only USB connection available - no firewire port as the camera has an internal hard drive as well as mini DVD) so I have to copy the files from my windows PC onto a flash drive and to my mac. Still can't read files (doesn't recognize format)
Any suggestions?

Did you open the Log and Transfer window or the Log and Capture window? FCP will only see a camera connected via Firewire in Log and Capture. But AVCHD and P2 formats can connect via USB and be viewed in the Log and Transfer window.
If you copy the files to the harddrive first, you have to copy the entire contents of the camera drive because there is a file structure directory that must be maintained in order for FCP to see the files and convert them to .mov

Higher end camera for Connect?

I was curious if anyone has had luck or a recommendation getting a higher end camera (non web-cam) to work with Connect? Something like a mid-range consumer hand-held camera or something along those lines. I am using the Cloud version of Connect on Windows PC's. I'd like to have a better quality camera with pan/zoom capabilities that we can mount on a tripod... USB would be preferable, but I believe our connection machine also has a firewire port. Anyone have any success stories or brands/models they can share?

Now-a-days, most high-end video cameras are only equipped with HDMI out instead of instead of firewire. If your computer has Thunderbolt, consider Blackmagic Ultra Studio Express. This device can capture HDMI (from the camera) and export via Thunderbolt to the computer. It's best to use Thunderbolt > Firewire versus USB since the two former methods allow for a higher rate of data transfer versus the latter which will result in loss of frames.

Digital start trigger and high speed camera

Is there any particular option or way available in LabVIEW to initiate the data acquisition and high speed camera using a digital start trigger? If yes, shall I create a task for high speed camera and then synchronize it with the other tasks?

The way to trigger data acquisition in LabVIEW is to use the 'DAQmx Start Trigger VI'. To set this up I recommend taking a look at this example:

Without any information about the high speed camera you are using, I can't give much advice. If the device is viewable in MAX then you may be able to create a task, and so long as you synchronise both channels in your code, the digital trigger should activate both events.

Replace MiDAS with labview in a high speed camera

Has anyone out there used MiDAS for high speed camera aquisition? The camera came with MiDAS. However the camera can be operated through labview which I'd prefer for better data aquistion. Does anyone have a program for this? Or know somewhere to look? Or help me get started to build my own program.

Ok, first of all, thank you SO much all you guys who have been helping me with very good info. So- I see the logic of NOT getting high def now if I am just playing and learning and dealing with YouTube.
I could get just a plain (non-high def) camera for under $300, like a canon ZR-850 which is miniDV but not high def. Or I could get the Canon HV20 or the Sony HDR-HC7 for about $1,100. Why should I spend the extra 7-800$ if I can't even use the high def stiff without a lot of expensive upgrades on my computer software or my screen I would be projecting on. My question is: I have a DELL 40 in plasma screen TV, and I have a G4 mac laptop w/ iMovie 06. CAN I USE HIGH DEF NOW WITH THE EQUIPMENT I HAVE? question #2 If I buy a high def camera now, can I still edit it with iMovie 06 ? is it just that the high def stuff will not be seen as high def? or is it that it won't even work at all and I won't be able to see anything or edit anything unless I have high def software etc?

From my perspective, the question to as if you should shoot in HD comes back to the reality of HD. Few people actually own BlueRay players. Few (in real terms) people own HD TV's. So if YOU want to connect your HD camcorder to your HD TV, for fun, then sure. BUT if your planning on marketing, selling or in any way distributing your final DVD to a group, then it's harded to justify, since again, few people will be able to view your product.
I am no expert. From what I am hearing as I was asking the same questions, HD can also be tricker to shoot well, the data is a magnitude more than SD. Unless you MUST shoot in HD, what I am being told is to get a really good SD camera (mini DV, nat.) and shoot it well.

Timeout errors when using high speed camera.

Hi all.
I'm currently trying to capture images using a Mikrotron EoSens MC1363 camera at high frame rates >500fps. The issue arises when the region of interest (ROI) is decreased in the microtron software (of which screenshots are attached). The ROI must be dropped in order to increase the fps. When MAX is opened and configured to match the camera settings, and grab is initiated, the timeout error occurs. I've attached screenshots of the mikrotron software, max settings, the error and PC used. The OS is windows 7 64 bit. We use the camera config file for the mono version of the camera which i've been informed will cross over to satisfy the colour version we use. Any questions feel free to ask. Thanks.

As you said the maximum frame rate with the ROI set to 1280 x 1024 is 505fps but according to the general information for the camera series:
The Mikrotron EoSens camera series features extremely sensitive high-speed
CMOS sensors available in monochrome or in colour with a resolution of 1280 x
1024 pixels and capture rates of 110 or 500 frames per second. Depending on
the model the image data is transferred in 8 or 10 bits via either CameraLink
(Base, Medium or Full) or Gigabit Ethernet.The region of interest (ROI) can be
freely selected, and the cameras can achieve even higher capture rates up to
120,000 fps when the ROI is reduced
Therefore it was my thought that by reducing the width of the ROI increased frame rates may be reached. Realistically we're looking for as high frame rates as possible so that the camera has capability to pass between projects. Currently the moving object enters and leaves the ROI within a 4 frame window, so frame rates of up to 1000fps would generate more data. Naturally, a point will come where the data cannot be physically written as fast as it is generated (>600MBps). Therefore it would be useful to get a handle onto why the error occurs as well as methods to fix it. Hopefully the problem is being discussed between NI and Mikrotron and we may have some answers in the near future.

QuickTime SDK for Windows ICMCompressionSessionEncodeFrame crashes for higher resolution cameras 2 MP

I implemented a while ago a H.264 re-encoding to output H.264 QuickTime .mov file usng QuickTime Window SDK 7.3.0.70. The code uses ICMCompressionSession to compress the frames going into the container. The code works fine with cameras with resolutions up to 2 Megapixels (1600 x 1200). The crash occurs in QuickTime API call. Here is the code to compress the frame:

Import of a high definition camera JVC for iMovie is that possible?

GZ-HD7U JVC is my digital HDD camcoder. I can import video by firewire cable?
When it does, does not appear any image. This camera is not on the list of cameras compatible with iMovie, but is recognized by the program. In spite of achieving import the recorded files in the camera for Mac by USB port, open in quick time and export in DV for iMovie for editing, but I would like to write directly into the Mac by firewire port, but I can not. The program does not read any image by firewire. Someone could help?

I have a nice collection of professional quality photos. These 8 megapixel images and are 2000 line plus resolution. When I use these for a screen saver on my iBook the detail is fantastic.
I have made a nice DVD using iMovie and iDVD. It looks pretty good. But the resolution is not that high. I understand that iMovie reduces the resolution on slideshows since it know the photos will be shown on a TV.
I have tried making the same DVD from the beginning using the 720p and 1080i settings in iMovie and then import into iDVD.
The final DVD is recognized by the high end DVD player as a 1080i format. However, the slideshow look not better than standard resolution. And I have tried all the various TV connectors (component, composite, HDMI, DVI, coaxial, etc). No difference.
I would appreciate any input.
Do I need to buy Final Cut Express to get a true 1280 line photo slideshow.

I need to clarify before Purchase of High Def Cam

Probably a stupid question, hope its the right thread, but hey! so here goes:
I'm new to high def and about to purchase an HD cam. As Apple and BluRay arent the best of friends at the moment (maybe a bit strong?!), i.e don't have the full array of output options as you do with SD, Im assuming I can just edit away in either AVCHD or HDV without the use of any other third party s/ware and just using my Finalcut Studio 2 I am able to produce a standard definition DVD in DVD Studio Pro?

Unless you are using a hardware assist like the AJA HDIO or one the the blackmagic devices, which will connect to an HDV camera and do the transcode on capture, capturing HDV over firewire and transcoding to ProRes 422 causes a significant lag: that is, when you stop the camera the process continues for some time. I don't even know if you can do a full one hour tape, for example. That said (which I read on this board), in my limited tests to a single, internal SATA drive (the second one, not the system drive) on my G5 Quad, at least two minutes were captured using the ProRes422 for HDV "easy setup" without any lag (two clips, starts a new clip at camera start/stop), and the display showing "real time capture" the entire two minutes.
But, while capturing HDV to a ProRes sequence, you can only do "capture now" and not capture and log. So if you need to recapture for whatever reason, you don't just get to use the log. You basically position the tape where you want it, start up "log and capture" and a screen appears, starts up your tape and begins capturing until you hit escape. There is an annotation in the window indicating how much behind things might be. Mine said "capture in real time" for my two minute test. A new clip is created on each camera start/stop, however.
So, if you are willing live without log and capture, it's a faster way to to as you note.
Oh, and AVCHD is a more consumer format with lower quality (so far) than HDV. HDV is 25mb/s; AVCHD is around 17mb/s, and with claims of true HD (1920x1080 rather than HDV's 1440x1080), there is significantly more compression. Check out camcorderinfo.com for some camera reviews of both types where compression and its artifacts are discussed.

LabVIEW 8.5 high-speed camera

Hi,
I'd like to take many
high-speed images with a camera, and save them to a disk, or my computer's hard drive. I congfigure the camera (it is a Pulnix TM-6740cl camera) with the Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX.) I take the pictures with LabVIEW. I've found an example program in LabVIEW that is close to what I want; it was written by two members of this forum, N_Holmes and reut. The only differences between that program, and
the program that I'd like to run is that I need to be able to change
the shutter speed of the camera (although I believe that I can do this
with MAX), I'd like to be able to change the target
directory (for some reason, if I change the directory with the reut
program, the camera only takes 1 "frame" and stops), and I'd like to be
able to save a file for each frame taken by the camera (I can only get
the reut program to save 1 file.) I have LabVIEW version 8.5. If you
could help me out in any way, then that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm using an NI PCI 1426 with NI-IMAQ, 18MB. Thanks for your previous help. I've actually worked on the program, and I got the camera to take multiple pictures. I also incorporated a part in the program that decodes the raw bayer image that this camera outputs.
I do have some other questions, though. First of all, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "trigger." I use the computer to take the pictures; MAX configures the camera, and LabVIEW sends the signals to the camera to take the pictures, and then saves them on the computer. Also, I know this is probably a bad question, but I'm not 100% sure where in MAX I can look to find out what framerate I'm acquiring at. I'd like to acquire pictures at the camera's maximum framerate, which I believe is somewhere over 1000fps. I tried many different methods in order to capture at the maximum framerate, and the best option seemed to be at the settings: manual shutter, shutter setting 0, 4X4 binning. However, my pictures were of extremely poor quality, and they were very dark.
Also, where can I go in MAX to change the shutter speed? I've tried changing the shutter control setting and the shutter setting number; I just want to verify that this is correct.
Thanks again for your help! Once I can figure out how to make these pictures take at maximum speed, and at the best quality, then I can finally start on my project!
