Higher Quality Versions

It was my understanding that, on subscribing to iTunes Match, ripped CD copies, when matched to versions in the Store, woul dallow me to download the Store version (if it was a higher quality.  I've previously copied CDs at moderate bitrates (some as low as 96kbps) to get enough onto early version iPods with limited memory (say, a 4GB iPod Nano).  This was good enough at the time, using standard earphones.  With more space available nowadays, and much higher quality earphones and headphones, I'd like to get the best from my music and copy at higher bitrates.  I was hoping that iTunes Match would mean I wouldn't have to rerip the older copies.
However, even though albumns and tracks match, there doesn't seem to be any way to now download the iTunes versions - my iMac, MBA, iPhone and iPad all have the older versions that had been synched.  Am I expecting too much or doing something wrong>
Thanks in anticipation...
Steve

First, switch to Song view and enable the iCloud Status column in iTunes by pulling down View > View Options. Select "iCloud Status" and close the small window.Any track that is "matched" you can delete the origional from the library (but not the cloud) and download the AAC@256 Kbps file from the iTS. Any track that is "uploaded" is just the same track that is already in your library.
Not every track in your iTunes library will match. That's just not going to happen. And tracks encoded at 96 Kbps and lower are not eligible for iTunes Match.
Tracks ripped at lower bit rates actually have a lower possiblity of matching than tracks ripped at higher bit rates because there is less data in the file for the service to sample and work with.

How can I find movies created in past versions of iMovie?  They are still on you tube but I want the original higher quality versions and I can't find them anymore.

    Paul -
I'm sorry you've lost files, but when you set up an account as Guest, there's a message that clearly states "When a guest user logs out, all information and files in the guest account's home folder are deleted". If you want an account where files are retained, you should create an Admin or Standard type.
You will need to use data recovery techniques to see if your file can be recovered. The more that you use your computer, the greater the risk that the file will be overwritten. You can contact a professional data recovery service such as DriveSavers (which will be expensive, but you can judge the value of the file) or try something like Data Rescue. The latter has a demo which you can install to determine if your file can be recovered, and then, on purchase, you can actually recover the file.
    Good luck!

  • How do  I export an iMovie to a high quality version that can be played on a pc

Ok here's the stitch- I made a short project (about 2:30) and exported it to a m4v high quality video. It was about 54 mb and the resolution was great on my pc. however, I edited the project and when I exported it again it ended up as a really low resolution mp4 video and was only 3.9 ish mb. How do I get convert my iMovie to a high quality m4v video or other high quality file for a pc?

Ps I have a toshiba laptop and I made the imovie on my Mac desktop at school (and I don't know which model/year iMovie and Mac I have)

  • High-quality files on PC and smaller files on iPod

I want to maintain CD quality files on my PC and have lower quality files on my iPod and my girlfriends iPod nano in order to be able to carry around more music, etc.
I would like to continue using iTunes as we are already both familiar with its layout; however, I know that iTunes will not automatically copy smaller files than are on the computer to an iPod. But, I was hoping that someone had deviced a method of accomodating this even if it means duplicating all of my files (a set each of high and low quality) on my PC.
I have been struggling with this for several weeks on my own. I would even consider switching from iTunes if I could still easily synch with the iPods.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Peace

    hiya!
however, I know that iTunes will not automatically copy smaller files than are on the computer to an iPod.
you can do this if you set up some smart playlists.
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
suppose you were to choose AAC as your compressed format. then create a smart playlist with the following rule:
    Kind contains AAC audio file
if your ipod had a high enough capacity, you could then simply head into your itunes "ipod" preference tab, select "automatically sync selected playlists only" and select the smart playlist containing only the AACs. so you'll end up with just the AAC versions of your music files showing up on the ipod.
if you already have the large, uncompressed versions of your songs in the library, you can use the "Convert" function to create the extra AAC copies of the songs:
iTunes: How to convert a song to a different file format
(you can do this in bulk. just select all the songs you want to convert, and itunes will steadily work through converting each one you have selected.)
you can use a similar smart playlist technique to create a smart playlist that contains the uncompressed high-quality versions of the tracks. you can use that playlist to navigate through the uncompressed versions, for playing on the PC.

  • Imovie burn high quality??

    Hi,
I've exported an iDVD 720p movie to my hard drive.  I found an old version of iDVD and have been able to get it on the comp and play around.  The challenge is, any time I try to burn a higher quality version (the video file is 10GB) to a dual layer DVD to maintain as much quality as possible, iDVD gives me an encoding error.  I've also tried Roxio Toast - I can get it to burn to dual layer DVD, but it's so grainy it's terrible - worse than pulling it up on Youtube.  On the mac, the video is beautiful.  Crisp, good colors.
I'm needing suggestions.  What I'm needing to do is very basic and I'm very good with computers, but this is frustrating not only me, but my parents, who purchased the computer for their business to be able to archive high quality recordings of their shows.  It's been a nightmare telling them that the $1,200 computer they bought can't seem to do this VERY BASIC task.
We have an Apple iMac purchased in May 2013 - so as new as can be basically.  Standard iMac, no upgrades.
    HELP?!?!

DVDs are by standards just 720x480 in resolution… about a quarter of your actual footage.
And playback a DVD 'full screen' on an iMac zooms-in again, blowing up the few pixels, about by factor 6x.
keep this in mind, when judging 'quality'.-
To get max possible quality, stay under 60min of content on SL dvd-r, 120min on DL dvd-r
Putting <60min on DL has no effect, just draining your wallet …
In iMovie, choose Export using Quicktime, in the many options, select AppleIntermediateCodec, which will export the internal timeline of your project without any un-neccessary transcoding. File is huge, don't worry, it's all about length. not size.
Drag resulting mov into iDVD. Works perfectly here…
Worked, to be precise. Haven't done a disk for years now

  • Tracks cutting short on iPod after replacing with higher quality files?

I've been replacing old mp3 by deleting them from the hd then "re-finding" the newer higher quality versions in iTunes.
Problem is all these new files always cut short in my iPod, it's been driving me mad, I thought the solution would be to erase the pod completely then replace all the files, I did this (twice) and it still happens, I even filled my pod with completely different mp3s just so I knew the files were definitely getting wiped but still the tracks I replaced cut short when I put them back on the pod.
I really hope the only solution isn't to delete the files from iTunes then re-import them, I've been trying to avoid this as my library is a few years old now with a bunch of meta-data (play counts, ratings etc) that will be lost if I do this, there must be some other way, seems a bit silly, I'd really like to know why it's happening.
This only happens on my vid pod not my shuffle btw.
    any suggestions?

Ok thanks, I downloaded vbrfix but I'm not quite sure how it works (though I replaced the line of code for Mac as outlined) is there something I have to do to get it operational?
It looks like it's a problem with the iTunes metadata fooling the iPod into thinking the vbr file should end earlier then it does, maybe because cbr data was there originally and hasn't been replaced with vbr data, though it's strange this only manifests itself on the vid pod.
Would I really need to re-rip my cds? problem is I wanted to use the LAME encoder which can't be done very satisfactorily from with iTunes, it looks like maybe this vbrfix could just alter the metadata in the files themselves to make them more iPod friendly?

  • Force higher quality Youtube video over EDGE?

When you're using EDGE the YouTube videos automatically get bumped down to a lower quality/highly compressed version to allow for them to stream quicker. Is there a way to force it to stream the higher quality version it uses when you're using an 802.11b connection? Obviously it'll be much slower, but for some videos it'd be worth the wait for some extra quality.

The YouTube videos are encoded using H.264 which, when streaming, the video quality is based on your data transfer rate (connection speed). Therefore the faster connection you have the better quality videos you're going to get served up.

  • High quality local encoding

    Hi,
I'm using Flash Media Live encoder  to encode a stream and send it to Flash Media Server so that I can view  it live (and DVR, using dvrcast_origin). This part is working fine. What  I would like to do is also record a high quality version locally and  save it to disk. If I simply check the "Save to file" checkbox, it only  saves the low-quality stream. If I add a second stream of much higher  quality, it's also sent to the server and I don't have the bandwidth for  that. This is in case I later want a DVD of the live stream...
Is  there a way to accomplish what I want?

There is a workaround to accomplish this:
    1. Launch an FMLE and configure it to encode 2 streams (low & high). Enable 'save to file' also. Give stream names as low;high. Don't start streaming yet.
    2. Launch one more FMLE, which will act as a dummy. Uncheck the audio and video devices. As you don't want to stream the high quality stream of the 1st FMLE, give the stream name as 'high' in this 2nd FMLE. Start streaming.
    3. Now start the streaming in 1st FMLE. As 'high' stream name is busy (by 2nd FMLE), only the low quality stream will be published.
But this workaround will also record the low quality stream to the local disk, which shouldn't be a problem if you have disk space.
You can also use 2 FMLEs, one for low and other for high quality stream, but you will have to ensure that same input is given to both. This is possible in 2 ways:
    1. Use same device in both instances.
    2. Use different devices in both instances but ensure same input (from same source) in both instances.

  • No high quality previews in Bridge under Version Cue

I posted this in the 'Bridge' forum but didn't get any responses... thinking maybe someone here might be able to help?
I've started to work with Version Cue, which seems like a useful idea.
However, within Bridge, when I preview a PSD file it shows a pixelated, low-res version. I have set the preferences to display "high quality previews" and purged the cache, restarted, etc. The previews for non-Version Cue files are fine.
For Illustrator files under Version Cue, the previews stay small - i.e. the same size as the thumbnails.
I really need to be able to view HQ previews in order to continue using Version Cue - anyone know how to make that happen?

    I was quite calm.
I've previously posted messages here and always had them answered within an hour or so, so that's why I wasn't sure if I'd posted in the correct forum. It's not that I expect "you" to answer me more quickly. Obviously this question falls between several different products, so I thought maybe I should have found a 'Version Cue' forum or something.
Sorry, I should have provided version details:
    Bridge version 2.1.1.9
    Version Cue version 3.1.0
    Running on OSX 10.5.4
It seems to me that one of the main uses of Bridge is to be able to use high quality previews to look through alternate designs. So if this doesn't work with Version Cue, which is all about controlling different versions of designs, that seems unfortunate.

Hi to all, i need to convert file types such as .AVI, .WMV and .MOV and keep the high quality, but i dont have or know any software to do this, are there any good options out there?
I don't really want to use a trial version, thanks.

I've used FFMpegX for my conversions. I've never looked at them on a large screen to see how well the video quality held on, but they look fine on my MacBook.

  • Switching to Win 7 kills High Quality Display Performance option?

I recently switched from Windows XP to Windows 7.
I am running CS2. The files I work with contain placed PDF pages in InDesign. I have verified all links are good.
The placed PDF pages contain some pages that are scans, and some containing live text.
I have the default settings for InDesign set to High Quality Display, and also verified with the contextual menu that it is on currently for the document.
Printing is fine, and export quality is fine. (Yep I restarted, an really familiar with this setting, and switched them all around while trying several times, I even cleared the object level display settings.)
When I was on XP I got a nice crisp preview, now there is no difference between "Typical Display" and "High Quality Display", not even a flicker as I switch settings. It definitely changes if I select "fast Display" to they gray boxes.
All my text from the placed pages, even the live text, is really jagged, even if you zoom in.
My graphics driver is up to date, I tried eliminating my page file, and also making it bigger. It is currently system managed at about 8000 MB.
I am on an HP Pro 3130, 2.93GHz, with 8 gigs of ram, and an ATI Radeon HD 4550 video card. I have the same monitors as before, an HP L1906 (dual, identical monitors) set at recommended resolution. I have tried it a 60 Hertz and at 75.
Old files that looked fine before and also new files all share this issue.
I am not sure what else to try.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

CS2 is completely unsupported under Windows 7.
Additionally with 8 gigs of RAM I imagine (hope) that you're using the 64 bit versions. This is another fly in the ointment.
Sorry, but it's time to upgrade to CS5. And this is pretty much your last chance at upgrade pricing. CS2 is the earliest version eligible.
I suggest you take advantage of it now before you have to pay full price.
If you have the suite you must upgrade the entire suite. The best deal I know of is on Amazon where you can save $30 and get free shipping: http://amzn.to/byP8go
If you have the stand alone version the upgrade is just about the same price everywhere. $199. Just make sure you by from an authorized retailer.

  • How can I replace one low quality source with another high quality one ?

Am I really this dumb or is it really this hard ?
I have one timeline / project / edit that essentially references one long source clip / event / file.
I have a newer higher quality transcoded version of the same source and want to replace the original lower quality version and end up with the same edited result just with better quality images !?
It's the same frame rate and image dimensions  but "relink" tells me the new file is not "similar" enough and won't do it !
Why is this so hard ? Is there a way to export a good old fashioned edl and then just reconform using the new source ?
What if I wanted to to replace low res offline footage with finished colour-corrected material and output a finished master - would that be this clueless as well ?
Please let me know the problem is between the chair and the keyboard - not between the hard disk and the power cord !

Guessing that when you created the higher quality media, it was done outside of FCP and probably changed some important metadata that the app is looking for. Or perhaps there is a difference between the original audio and the new audio.
Anyway, Luis' advice about the replace edit seems like the easiest solution.

The usual way to do offline online is within FCP – creating the proxies and then using Preferences to switch back to and from.
If you sent it out for grading, the Relink should work fine. If you haven't seen this kb doc, it's worth reviewing.

  • What settings do I need for high quality web video?

I've created a video via animoto.com for my website. The video resolution they recommend for web is 432 x 240 @ 15 fps. I used this and it's not as crystal clear as I'd like. Still looks pixelated a bit and I'd like a higher def version. So I downloaded the hi res version (864 x 480 @ 24 fps). This looks great but takes forever to load due to buffering. Then the video stops every few seconds. I understand this res is not meant for web.
What is the resolution I need for best quality & fast loading? I've seen great videos on the web before that loaded very quickly. This is what I'm looking for. I have Quicktime Pro for Mac and can pretty much save in any formats & resolutions. So what's recommended?
    Thanks!

    Hi
    There are some important things.
    • Set down burn speed to x1. In iDVD08 You can do this in preferences.
    • Use high quality media. I only use Verbatim
    • Use right type of DVDs. I only use DVD-R (Single Layer)
    • Best quality - I use Pro-encoding Quality.
    • IMPORTANT: Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Your internal (start-up) hard disk
    • Use a CD/DVD cleaning disk from time to time
    • Don't burn more than three DVD at a time then let Your DVD-burner rest in 15 minutes to cool down.
    Good Luck

    9 hours??!
Twice the length of a cinema epic?
How are you expecting to distribute it?
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/11417.html
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
That was for single-layer DVDs. Double these numbers for dual-layer DVDs.
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced technology to encode your video, resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned abo
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.
