Highlight/Shadow Clipping Indicator - Show the image too.

The highlight/shadow clipping indicator feature (Alt/Exposure or Alt/Blacks on my PC. Not sure what it is on a MAC)is marvellous and indispensible. But, it could be better, in my view.
When you are checking for clipping using this feature, the image disappears leaving you with only the clipped pixels. Everything else goes black.
The problem is that you only see the effect of your decision on how much clipping you want to allow (if any) when you take you finger off the Alt key.
It is vital, particularly when judging shadow clipping, which is so important in setting the overall contrast of the image, to be able to see the effect of your actions in real time. These actions can be so subjective.
So, would it be possible for the highlight and shadow clipping (i.e. the blown pixels) to appear in the form of a colour on the image, *but* keeping the image visible at all times?
Thinking about it further......it would be great to be able to switch between 'blacked out' and visible in Preferences, or some such.
Thanks.
D.

>Just curious though, where on the Adobe site would I have found this extremely useful piece of information?
You might start with Photoshop help, which explains those controls and directs you to a
Video Turorial on the Adobe web site.
While the help is well done, ACR is a pretty complex topic, and for a more in depth coverage I would recommend the latest edition of Bruce Fraser's Real World Camera Raw, which Jeff has updated and will be available soon.

    First off, this image is not a raw image.  It is a compressed small-raw of some sort so Adobe's normal demosaicking algorithms are not being employed, and Adobe is having to reverse engineer R, G, B channels from Y, Cb, Cr channels, so something may be non-optimal this conversion.
    Secondly, at least with this non-raw Y, Cb, Cr image, there are some Y pixels that have zero value in the file, so no matter what you do, other than adjusting the bottom of the tone curve above zero, they will be clipped.
    It also seems that the clipping indicator triangles are not affected by the Detail settings so turning off any noise-reduction or sharpening is required show you which pixels the clipping triangle is keying off of.
    Here is your image opened in an RawDigger which is a raw analysis program that indicates the Y channel does have a minimum value of 0:
    Here is a screenshot of LR with a very small crop on the shadowed background area above the performers, with the Detail settings turned off--no noise reduction or sharpening, and the Toning settings as bright as possible, and in that small crop area, there are a few black pixels that are highlighted blue if I turn on the clipping indicator, so it's not surprising, that with this image, at least, the black clipping indicator doesn't turn off very easily.  In this side-by-side, they have the same settings, but the Before image is without the clipping indicator and the After image is with the clipping indicator engaged so you can see the 4 pixels that are 0 in the tiny cropped area:
    Here is a DNG of the settings as in the above LR screenshot, other than the embedded preview that appears to be the entire image not the tiny cropped area:

  • Histogram Shadow Clipping Indicator - What do the colours indicate?

    To see what colours in the shadows are clipping to zero, and exactly where they occur in your image, you can hold down the Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) key and move the Blacks slider to the left (in ACR 7.x and 8.x).
    To quote from the top of page 206 of Jeff Schewe's and Bruce Fraser's 'Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS5' (which deals with ACR 6.x - but AFAIAA nothing has changed in ACR 7.x or 8.x), you interpret the displayed result as follows:
    "Unclipped pixels display as white. The other colors show you which channels are being clipped to level 0. Cyan pixels indicate red-channel clipping; magenta pixels indicate green-channel clipping; yellow pixels indicate blue-channel clipping. Red pixels indicate clipping in both green and blue channels; green pixels indicate clipping in red and blue channels; and blue pixels indicate clipping in red and green channels. Black pixels indicate that all three channels are clipped."
    Does the same result hold true for the colour of the Histogram Shadow Clipping Indicator?

    Thanks, Eric. I'll check out your suggestion about the point curve.
    I've already started to do some testing of my own, based on the Histogram's reaction faced with simple images composed only of various combinations of pure (fully saturated) Black, White, Grey (dark, mid and light), Red, Green, Blue, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. The results so far are a little surprising, but I'll report in full when I've had the chance to complete the test.

    Greyed imaged in the Import dialog box mean you have already imported the photos into Lightroom, so there is no need and no benefit to importing them a second time.
    Just go to the Library module, search for the desired photos, and resume working on these photos.

  • Rendered html pages in results file(html) not showing the images of origina

    hi,
    rendered html pages in results file(html) not showing the images of original page
    when i click on rendered html pages of different html section of a results file.
    both master and tested as well.
    thx

    By design, the report will not show the images, will not apply imported css or javascript files and will not show framesets. Also, in the case that an image is shown there is no guarantee that that was the image that was seen when recording/playback the script.
    The rendered html pages that are shown in the report only contains the structure of the html page. If an image is shown the image will be a reference to the location of the image and not a saved copy of the image as part of the report. If the website has a simple structure this can give an idea of what was different. If the website relies extensively on images, stylesheets or javascript to present the information then this report feature becomes less useful.
    Few weeks ago I requested a feature request in order to be able to see in the report the page exactly as it was when recording the script and exactly as it was when the script was played back. In the way that the feature request was written it specifies the use of screen captures or saving the page as a pdf file.

  • Can't show the image in Firefox

    I have a problem to show the image in Firefox. They can show
    in Explorer. Does anyone help me with this? You can visit the site:
    www.norskbrannsikkerhet.no to see the problem.

    The problem is the source for the image, you have
    <img src="X:\CVS Norge\94 Prosjekter\945
    Trading\SovReflex\Bilder\Thumbs\litenalarmpakke_it400.jpg"
    alt="test"
    border="0" align="top" id=""
    onclick="MM_goToURL('parent','produkter/prodDetal.cfm?ProdID=21');return
    document.MM_returnValue" />
    So the source for the image is referring to a filepath, ie
    X:\ rather than a
    web path, so you`ll only see the image on your computer
    connected to the X
    drive. You need to change it to a web relative path, and then
    it will work.

  • Showing the images

    Hi.I need to show the images wich are in folder images &
    display "No Image" for those we have not the image in the folder.
    I wrote this code:
    <cfset PhotoLocation =
    "e:\www\NeedBattery\images\manufacturer\<cfoutput>#getBrands.cat_level2_image#</cfoutput> ">
    <cfif not FileExists(PhotoLocation)>
    <cfoutput>no image</cfoutput>
    <cfelse>
    <a><img
    src="#imagePath#images/manufacturer/#getBrands.cat_level2_image#"
    width="60" height="40" /></a>
    </cfif>
    but the result is incorrect & typed "NO Image" for all
    the images.
    would u plz help me what is wrong with my code?
    thanks

    Try
    <cfif
    FileExists(ExpandPath("\NeedBattery\images\manufacturer\<cfoutput>#getBrands.cat_level2_i mage#</cfoutput>"))>
    If you still want to use the PhotoLocation you need to amend
    thus:
    <cfset PhotoLocation =
    "\NeedBattery\images\manufacturer\<cfoutput>#getBrands.cat_level2_image#</cfoutput>">
    <cfif FileExists(ExpandPath(PhotoLocation))>

  • When I create a DVD slide show, the images on TV are 4:3 instead of 16:9. Fix? (Using version 11.)

    When I create a DVD slide show, the images on TV are 4:3 instead of 16:9. Fix? (Using version 11.)

    Hi Christina,
    I used it because other facets of my work in graphics require conversion, not just FCP, so I am used to popping it open quickly using it on the fly, in the field when shooting. I back up, then convert typically on my laptop while it sits on the seat of my pickup while I am photographing the next portion of the training. I do have the files backed up (in ordered structure as shot and preserved on the cards) both on my laptop, also mirrored in the RAID and once again on a second external firewire LaCie and make sure that every little file is in there as it should be. Thanks for the info. on that though, appreciate it. Will probably switch to using FCP to that level of Log and Capture in the future because it seems more basic. I am not sure using L&C would make any difference on the problem I seem to be having here. I will create a small sample file and give it a try for future reference. Again, thank you.
    Up until this week the  Quicktime conversions I have been creating and composing from have been compressed in H.264 (720 X 480 to fit our LMS stage), and have been working well without a hitch. And 8 of the 11 of these sequences are still exported to a true 16:9 without a hitch. They are sharp, bright and the color is great. The three orphans are also sharp with good color, however squished from side to side. It simply makes no sense that data that has been saved identically, edited identically and exported with identical settings would change in mid-stream like that.
    Thanks for taking the time to reply. I do appreciate that very much.

  • Coverflow stopped showing the image....

    Hello All:
    It used to be when I opened a folder in coverflow, it would show the images or part of the document. I would hit the space bar and it would come in larger for me to look at the document/image more closely.
    So I changed/touched/did something that all I get now is an ICON of what that file is and not the preview. For Example, if it is an Adobe Illustrator file, I get an orange sheet with the letter ai on the sheet.
    What do I need to do to change this back,
    any help would be greatly appreciated,
    paul

    Hrmmm.... well I kind of figured that coverflow does not show all contents on all items.
    It seems to show photos and certain files but not ai files or psd files.
    Any other thoughts or suggestions welcome,
    Paul

  • How to get clipping indicator in the Curves Adjustment??

    I hold down the option key while moving highlight slider to the left but no clipping indicators appears.  I'm using Photoshop CS4.
    What am I doing wrong??
    Thanks for any help,\
    Russ

    Hey buddy, really appreciate your attempt to help me.
    I went to IMAGE-MODE and make sure I was in RGB.  Is that where i
    should check?  I don't know where to check to see if display is set to
    Light and not Ink.
    The funny thing is that when I push the Option key in Levels I get the
    Clipping Indicator when I move the Highlight slider to the left,  but
    when I press the Option key for the Curves White Point slider, nothing
    happens as I move the slider to the left.
    I don't know, I have to be doing something wrong.
    Any further comments would greatly appreciated,
    Russ

  • RH9 Proj Mgr not showing the images

    I am importing topics from one RH9 project into another. The topics come in fine, with images intact. However the images are not going into the Proj Mgr "Images" folder. In fact they cannot be seen anywhere via the Project Manager (yes I have selected Show All file types and yes I have tried toggling the Proj Mgr view).
    RH does create subfolders within the Images node that are named after the topic folders into which I import the topics, however these show up as being empty. Why does RH9 create them and then not use them?
    Windows Explorer shows me that the physical image files are sitting in the <topic name>_files folder that gets created when I import the topic. However, these files are not visible via the project manager.
    If I cannot see the image files in the Project Manager, how can I move them into the Images folder? Is there an option I need to set to make the imported images visible in the Project Manager?

    In Windows Explorer I have:
    Folder containing the imported HTM files
    |-> Subfolder(s) named after the folder(s) from which the topics were imported, with "_files" added to the folder name(s), containing the images
    In Project Manager I see just the top level folder as above, containing imported HTM files. If I toggle to the view that shows an "Images" folder, I see a subfolder under "Images" with the same name as the topic folder but it appears empty.
    Hope I'm not being too dense here, but "rename" what folder to what name?

  • Aperture won't show the images I want to import

    I don't use Aperture to manage my images, but import those I want to work with from folders on my Mac. When I try to import images from a recently acquired Panasonic LF1 camera Aperture only shows movie clips and not the JPEGs. The Import Settings for file types does not exclude anything. Importing is fine  from other folders.
    Thoughts, please.

    When I try to import images from a recently acquired Panasonic LF1 camera Aperture only shows movie clips and not the JPEGs.
    And how are the settings in the "raw&jpeg pairs" brick of the import panel? If that is set to "raw only", your jpegs will not be imported. Set the raw&jepg option to "both, jpeg as master"
    The raw format of your camera does not yet appear to be supported.
