Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks

So in the Basic panel of the Develop module, there are sliders for:
Highlights
Shadows
Whites
Blacks
Is it just me or from a workflow perspective, wouldn't it make more sense to have them listed as:
Whites
Highlights
Shadows
Blacks
While playing with the beta, I found myself working with highlights and whites together or working with blacks and shadows together. The jumping around in that panel meant I had to pay way more attention to it than necessary which was distracting.
Anyone else or am I just too uptight?!

Despite the fact that I see the "top down" approach, I would still rather sacrifice that a little bit and instead having the sliders in the photographic order.
Top down is only valid for the first run. After that, I usually find myself adjust here and there a little bit. And that usually take quite a bit more time than the first run.
So when sanitizing the shadows/blacks for instance, the jumping seems tedious.

In Lightroom, go to the Window menu, select Panels, select Basic

Upgraded from Lightroom 3 to 5.2 and I don't have the highlight/shadow/whites/blacks sliders

Sorting order for Highlights, Shadows, Whites and Blacks controls.

I absolutely love the new set of controls as compared to the similar options in LR3. With just these 6 controls and a few seconds I can get my image looking great. One thing is making me crazy though, the four controls are logically sorted "Whites, Highlights, Shadows, Blacks" in terms of the range that they impact. If the controsl were sorted as I suggested, I would be able to think through the problem of fixing a particular image more efficiently.
Has this been discussed or considered?

If there's one thing we can pull from this whole discussion, it's that there's no way for Adobe to make everyone happy on this issue. There just isn't. Some people absolutely hate that the sliders are ordered as the are in LR4b, others seem to think it makes perfect sense. Both are adamant in their stance. So now it becomes this whole over-blown issue of," What percentage of users like it this way compared to that way." I'm sorry, but I just don't understand why it's such a big deal. Is it that hard to use the controls in the order that Adobe placed them in LR4b. Really? Is it? Is it really that slow for you high-volume photographers out there? Is it really something that you won't completely get used to in all of a few hours of using LR4?
The current sort order of the sliders in LR4b is not necessarily just an order-of-operations that is being thrust upon Lightroom users. The rationale is that the controls follow an order which, in most cases for most photographs, flows from the most global adjustments to the most specific. It's more than just an arbitrary ordering based on "what Adobe says we ought to do first".
The truth is, while I understand Adobe's reasoning here, I really don't care what order the sliders end up in. Why? Because it really doesn't matter all that much, at all. I mean, think about it. Let's say that the current order of the sliders in LR4b makes it to the final version. Are users going to keep using Lightroom 3 in protest? No. Are users going to keep all their photos in PV2010 expressly because they simply can't handle the order of the sliders in PV2012? No. The reason that nobody will go to such lengths is that it's reallly just not that important. This is an exceptionally minor issue of personal preference that has less weight and importance than the hard drive space at Adobe used to store all of the threads that have popped up in complaint of the slider order.
I know that everyone vehemently arguing against the current slider order will whole-heartedly disagree... but I simply had to put in my two-cents. The issue of slider order is so miniscule that I cannot fathom why so much has already been written about it.

Highlight/shadow sliders changing back to LR3

I just downloaded LR4 as a trial. Everything seemed to install just fine, but when I open LR4, the new whites highlights shadows blacks sliders instantly turn back to the old LR3 recovery fill light sliders....I see them for about 3 seconds and they change right before my eyes. Why is it doing this?

In develop module... down right corner...!... update to current proces.> update all in filmstrip
Or down right module .... Camera calibration...process.... change to 2012.

Macbook Pro 13-inch (10.6.8) random white/black screens and becomes unresponsive...what is wrong/what to do to solve?

PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS I'M IN NEED OF URGENT HELP. || Heeey everyone! I'm new here. Please don't bite me. =))
Okay. So I have a Macbook Pro, 13 inch (bought Dec. 2010). It's currently running on Snow Leopard (10.6.8). It had a hard drive crash in Feb. 2012...I had it replaced and lost all my files . It had two major falls (January 2011 & November 2012). Oh, and it also makes this weird grinding noise when you listen closely.
Everything was going fine, until last week, I encountered a kernel panic. Restarted, but was faced with that awkward blank white screen thing at start up. I was told at the Apple Store back when my hard drive crashed in Feb. 2012 that repeated pressing down of the power button can be damaging, so I waited for it to run out of battery to restart. After that, it was normal again. I downloaded OnyX and verified/repaired permissions...nothing was out of the ordinary.
THEN. The next day, in the middle of use, my mac suddenly black-screened. Not a lot of windows were open, and I wasn't doing anything that...will put a strain on anything. It wasn't total pitch-black like the screen looks like when it's turned off. I could still hear the hard drive working and making that grinding sound. I pressed the caps-lock key, and it didn't light up. =))) What, is it off or something? But I can still hear the hard drive there. And it's totally unresponsive. So I decided to restart by pressing down the power button. It was normal again...until a few hours later when it suddenly white-screened. OKAY it's white now. I don't know what that's supposed to mean. But it had the same symptoms as the black-screen. Unresponsive, caps-lock didn't light up, normal grinding sound as if the computer was still on. So I let it run out of battery so I could restart. Upon restarting, I opened Disk Utility and verified disk permissions. There was no damage, nothing again.
I recently got uTorrent (around late December), and thought that it might have been that, so I deleted it and emptied trash. The next day, it did the black screen again. Same with the next day. There's at least one per day. It didn't seem to affect performance at all, everything still ran smoothly. I made sure to check disk permissions to see if everything was okay. And everything was.
Then, about three days passed without any black/white screen and I thought that nuisance was over. BUT NO. Two days ago, I got black-white-white screened and I was...shocked. I let it run out of battery again. =))) Checked Disk Utility, again, nothing. So I decided to get that Software Update thingo that always pops up. I upgraded to 10.6.8. A day passed without the dreaded black/white screens. But yesterday, it white screened once. And today, it white screened again.
I really can't figure out a concrete pattern. It seems random. But what I do know is that:
1. It happens in the afternoon. All the time, consistently in the afternoon. LOOOL IDK what this is supposed to mean, but its one of the common factors. =))
2. Most of the time, it happens when I leave the computer for about 30 seconds - 1 minute to get something. Or if I'm watching a long video (like a TV show episode), a period of time where I don't touch the mouse/press any keys. Is that related somehow?
3. I can't do anything to get it out of the white/black screen except restart. Each time I restart, I check Disk Utility and nothing is wrong.
And yes, I've went to the Apple Store to get this checked. All they said is: "Upgrade to Lion, maybe the error will disappear. If it does, then it was just a software error. If it doesn't...then sorry." LOOOOOOL NOT FALLING FOR THAT, not spending money when I'm not sure it'll fix the error. I want concrete answers.
I'm a student, and my Christmas Break will be over in less than a week. SO I NEED ALL THE HELP IN THE WORLD PLEASE. What is wrong with my laptop? Can I fix this? Will opening it in safe mode help in any way? PLEASE I'M DESPERATE.

Try these:
See what's loading in your login items. - delete the ones you don't need.
Open up Activity Monitor and under all processes, see what's using most of your cpu's resources. Highlight the ones using the most % CPU and hit quit process.
Next, open up disk utility and verify your disk. Once that's done, verify disk permissions - repair if needed.
Restart your Macbook and see if it speeds things up for you.

Highlight/Shadow Clipping Indicator - Show the image too.

The highlight/shadow clipping indicator feature (Alt/Exposure or Alt/Blacks on my PC. Not sure what it is on a MAC)is marvellous and indispensible. But, it could be better, in my view.
When you are checking for clipping using this feature, the image disappears leaving you with only the clipped pixels. Everything else goes black.
The problem is that you only see the effect of your decision on how much clipping you want to allow (if any) when you take you finger off the Alt key.
It is vital, particularly when judging shadow clipping, which is so important in setting the overall contrast of the image, to be able to see the effect of your actions in real time. These actions can be so subjective.
So, would it be possible for the highlight and shadow clipping (i.e. the blown pixels) to appear in the form of a colour on the image, *but* keeping the image visible at all times?
Thinking about it further......it would be great to be able to switch between 'blacked out' and visible in Preferences, or some such.

White/black stripes on my screen for a few seconds on my Macbook Pro Retina

Sometimes there appear on white/black stripes on my screen for a few seconds. There isn't a specific programm or anything when he does that. It comes and it goes. I don't know if it's serieus problem. Do somebody know what to do?

SWF/FLV files show white/black bars on sides of frame

I have a recurring issue of bars showing up on the left and right side of my swf/flv frames. The good news is the video plays on our site. The bad news is the bars show up on some of the flash files (like on testimonials.html) and not on others (like wedding.html), even though I perceive I'm copying in the same code.

1st. I like many other will not download a zip file, can you post a link to the site?
It may be if you are using the same code but only changing the swf/flv file name, that the swf/flv's are smaller than the size specified in your object code - width="600" height="366".
If the swf/flv's size is smaller then the player will be the size specified, but your swf/flv will be centralized inside the player, (unless otherwise specified) resulting in the white/black bars.

The panel with White Balance, contrast, exposure, whites, blacks, etc. has disappeared from my Develop screen

The panel with White Balance, Exposure, Contrast, Tone, Whites, Blacks, etc has disappeared from my Develop screen. The control panel on the right side now starts with Tone Curve and I can't find a way to revert back to the screen with the other adjustments. I need to know how to correct this problem.
This is what I'm working with now:

Right click 'Tone Curve' (the title/words) and enable 'Basic'.

The text on my photoshop is only letting me type in white, black, and grey. How can I have it type in color? I have tried to change the color but no matter what I do it leaves the text in grey/

What is the image mode? Image > Mode - should be set to RGB
Do you have a B&W adjustment layer above the Type layer?
If you are not sure, it would help if you upload a screen grab of your entire workspace with the Layers and History panels visible. Keep it at full resolution please.

When to set white/black point

My apologies if this is a dumb question.
I am new to Photoshop and am making a start on tidying up all my photos. I am keen to establish a good workflow but am unsure on which steps to take first.
At the moment after opening up my image in Photoshop, I first check the histogram and then if necessary use the sliders in Levels to make any adjustments.
I've started trying to set the white/black point values too but am unsure as to when to set them. Please can anyone tell me whether I should take a sample of each at the very beginning before I make any adjustments or at the very end.

First of all one should apply Adjustments as Adjustment Layers and the fewer the better as regards potential banding (but this can occasionally be alleviated by switching the layered version to 16bit).
It may be a matter of taste, but if one does use the white- and black point I’d rather have it used at the beginning (or farther down below as an Adjustment Layer).
Additionally I’d recommend trying to do as much of the global Adjustments as possible with a single (Curves-) Adjustment Layer.
