Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

  • How do i stop websites from hijacking my firefox home page setting? this hijacker didn't even identify itself with a logo.

at least two times my firefox preference home page has been changed. bing did it the first time, and there have been others. this time it is an unknown location. the new home page has no logo, and i'm not sure who it is. i've got avg protection software, the purchased version, for protection, but now i'm not sure if we are secure. not even sure how this hijack occurred. when i shut the system down using sleep, the system said new software updates would be installed on startup for firefox. the next time i started up, there was this new home page. is there anyway to prevent this from happening in the first place. if i install new software and the home page is changed, i can correct that, but this change was out of the blue. i think it was associated with firefox, but i'm not really sure. haven't installed new software for ages.
    can anyone help with prevention?

Please create a screenshot of your Firefox by following the guide mentioned at [[How do I create a screenshot of my problem?]].
Once you've done this, attach the saved screenshot file to your forum post by clicking the '''Browse...''' button below the ''Post your reply'' box. This will help me to visualize the problem.
Also, I am assuming you have not clicked any links saying something like 'Set this page as my homepage'? This may seem a stupid question, but you may have inadvertently done this by pressing Enter on a page.

  • What is this Ask Home Page that has attached to Firefox? Is it a browser hijacker of some kind? How do I get rid of it?

Is the Ask Home Page suppose to be attached to Firefox home page? How do I get rid of this mess? I have Windows 8, that I HATE.

    Hello,
Yes it appears to be a browser hijacker. Please see:
    * http://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-ask-toolbar-and-search/
Note: If you find that after restarting Firefox the Ask homepage is still there, see the articles:

  • If Firefox home page is a secure page why does it always get hijacked by yahoo.co.uk?????

Need to know where and how to find the icon (or any other method) which allows me to delete the yahoo.co.uk hijack. I don't even live in the UK!

If you are shown the Firefox main page but the search bar is set to Yahoo, try changing your Search settings:
    * On the Search Bar (bar to the right of the address bar), click the icon or downward triangle
    * Select the search provider you want as the main search engine
You can delete search providers you do not want by repeating the steps above but selecting "Manage Search Engines" and performing the necessary actions there. Please see [[Search bar - add, change and manage search engines on Firefox]] for more information.
If when you start Firefox you are sent to a different home page, first check your home page settings to make sure nothing was appended (if there is a | followed by another link, that tells Firefox to open another tab with that link):
    * Tools (or [[Image: New Fx Menu]]) > Options > General
Also check your add-ons for any suspicious extensions:
    * Tools (or [[Image: New Fx Menu]]) > Add-ons > Extensions
Check your list of install programs in Windows - Control Panel > Programs and Features. If you installed a yahoo toolbar, try uninstalling it to see if that fixes the problem.
You can also check to see if your shortcut has been tampered with. Right click on your Firefox shortcut and select Properties. Check the target line under the Shortcut tab for any web pages after the "firefox.exe".
You can also use the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/searchreset/ Search Reset Tool]. This will reset your search and home page preferences to the default value then uninstall itself. Note that if your preferences are not saved and revert back when you restart Firefox, you may have third party software, such as an antivirus, preventing your preferences from being changed. Please see the article [[How to fix preferences that won't save]] for more information.

  • Page hijacks my home page after DSL modem interrupts

I seem to be having frequent DSL modem interruptions (5-10x/wk) from my provider, a local company in my area. Sometimes these interruptions are severe enough for a page to come up on Safari when the DSL connection is restored. The page is from SBC (presumably Southern Bell Communications) and reads as follows:
    Success
    Resolution Successful
The error has been successfully resolved. Please close down your browser and restart it to
    continue browsing online
The URL of the SBC page is http://gateway.2wire.net/xslt?PAGE=HURL00
Now here is the problem I am experiencing. Even though I shutdown (i.e., quit Safari), when I relaunch it, this SBC page, in essence, hijacks my home page (www.nytimes.com) and I am unable, through any mechanism I have tried, to bring up the homepage - it always reverts to the SBC page. I click on the HOME icon, I type in the URL of my home page, nothing works. I've checked PREFERENCES and my desired home page is still set as my default. I clear out cookies. Nothing works, except to completely shut down my iMac and power it up again. This is a real pain.
Is this an ISP issue or a Safari issue? And is there a simpler way to get Safari restored so it works properly?

    Hello ken:
Try deleting the preference file (com.apple.safari.plist) and restarting (reenter your personal preferences). Also, clear the Safari cache.
The 2Wire modem/router is the one SBC (aka AT&T) uses for broadband customers.
In answer to your last question, if the above does not help I think your ISP is at the root of the problem.

  • User profile and home page changed and Firefox hijacked by IE

I use Firefox with XP os with Kaspersky os. When I turned on computer it went through changing user profile.

Is your home page now https://www.google.com/ ?
If you are missing the traditional "black bar" at the top of the page, that has been replaced with an application button on the right side that looks like a grid of small squares. Some creative developers have posted add-ons to restore the old bar. I haven't tried these myself:
    * [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/proper-menubar/ Proper Menubar]

  • Home page hijacked by jzip. How do I stop this?

I installed jzip last night and it hijacked my home page. I change my home page back to the default that I want and the next time I open Firefox the jzip home page is back. I uninstalled jzip but that did not correct the problem. I went into about:config and searches for jzip and change it there but that did not work. How do I correct this problem.

Look in your Program Files for this folder and delete it "Windows jZip Toolbar." This is after you uninstalled the device from control panel. Good luck!

  • My home page got hijacked and I cannot re-set it?

My home page got hijacked by "http://www.whitehotproductions.com/237d25/index.html"
Nothing I or my tech guy has tried will make it go away

    Hi JanSull1740,
Your issue may be because you've been hit with some [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Is%20my%20Firefox%20problem%20a%20result%20of%20malware?s=malware&r=0&e=sph&as=s#w_how-do-i-get-rid-of-malware Malware]. I'd say that is the most likely cause.
If it isn't malware, you should take a look at the Knowledge Base article [[How to set the home page]]. Your homepage might have been changed by a particular site. Sites like MSN, Yahoo, etc have been know to ask to become your homepage.
There are steps in that article to reset your homepage preferences to default. I would try that first to clear out any strangeness. If that works, you can try setting your homepage again to your personal preference.
If that doesn't work you should look at the article [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved Preferences not saved].
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Do Search has hijacked my default home page setting

While updating /downloading Java I suspect
I declined all offers for software and eventually stopped the download
Do Search now is the first page that loads when I click on Mozilla
When I press 'home' (top right/address bar) I go to the Mozilla Firefox Start Page
Options/General/Mozilla Start Page is in the little tab window
Control Panel/Internet Options/https://www.mozilla.org/ is in Home Page window
however if I click on 'Use default' switch "do Search' pops back in.
I deleted/blocked the extension in the Mozilla Add-on section
I ran a virus scan and cleaned my computer, restarted however I cannot fix the problem

The target shows the command that is used to launch Firefox and should only have the full path to the Firefox program enclosed in quotes.
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
If you see a reference to the do-search website then remove that trailing part.

  • MSN hijacks my firefox home page, no matter how many times I reset to Firefox Google. I do not have any MSN extension in my add ons, nor a BING file in my control panel add/ remove section. So how to get rid of it

I have tried the forum suggestions for re-setting my home page, how to disable add-on extensions, and how to to remove from any MSN / BING from my add/ remove in the control panel, but it persisits.
I do have IE 8 also , but only use it on websites that only function with IE, but my home page on IE is of my choice (GOOGLE) and does not reset to MSN. So whatever the problem is, it does not affect IE only Firefox
    Any help ?

Seems that may have worked and that's great, thank you. But now I have another problem which seems to be as persistent as the search bar has been.
Now when I edit the bar and position of the buttons some of those buttons disappear when I click Ok in the customization, but reappear when I reopen the customization settings.
Why is that? When I put a space in between some of the buttons the buttons near the space will disappear and leave a blank space where it should be.
I'm beginning to be rather annoyed with this Firefox Beta to say the least and am considering returning to the version before it. Whatever I do now as far as customizing is concerned of the toolbar is reset every time I reopen Firefox. The buttons are no longer where I had set them up, the address bar is stretched to it's maximum, the Menu Bar is back the far left edge, buttons are missing that I had put there, and buttons I had removed are returned.
:| I know it may seem insignificant to some people but it annoys the crap out of me. I understand this is a beta and if there is no solution then I perhaps will use the earlier version for a while.
Thanks for your input by they way, it's much appreciated.

  • Something is hijacking my home page and changing it to MSN. I switch back to my preferred page and something switches it right back. Also putting a bing search bar in every blank new tab. I hate both. How do I remove?

The only thing I changed today was I allowed the update to Youtube HD. Now I cannot save my home page. New tabs and new sessions all are reset to MSN. Plus the annoying Bing bar pops up in every new tab. PLEASE PLEASE help me get rid of these. If I really liked MS, I wouldn't be such a Firefox fan.

An extra extension might have snuck in. These can be bundled with other software you might have installed recently.
Try disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable. (Or if completely unwanted, remove.)
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
Does that get rid of the extra tab?
Note: I suggest also visiting the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program, and clicking the "Installed on" column header. This should bring the most recent additions to the top and group them by install date so you can investigate how unexpected software might have been installed.

  • Bling has hijacked my home page, I can't rid of it what to do?

I have uninstalled firefox and reinstalled it, bling is still there, I tried resetting firefox, that didn't work, does anyone know how to fix this problem?

It sounds like you have a third party program that has taken over your search engine, home page, and/or the default new tab page. Fortunately, this can be remedied easily:
    # At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP), and then click Add-ons. The Add-ons Manager tab will open.
    # In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Extensions panel.
    # Select the toolbar you wish to remove.
    # Click the remove button.
    # Click "Restart now" if it pops up. Your tabs will be saved and restored after the restart.
After Firefox restarts, install the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/searchreset/ Search Reset Tool]. This will remove the rest of the traces of this program from your Firefox.
If that doesnt work download [http://download.cnet.com/AdwCleaner/3000-7786_4-75851221.html ADWCleaner] and remove any detected items.
For further information, please read [[Remove a toolbar that has taken over your Firefox search or home page]].

  • Something keeps hijacking my Home Page back to Mozilla Firefox

After I have typed a URL into the Tools->Options->General Home Page and OK, it keeps getting set back to Mozilla Home Page by blanking out the field on reboot. Why?

A new tab opens with the page set in the browser.newtab.url pref and not with the home page. The home page opens in a new window.
You can check the browser.newtab.url pref on the <b>about:config</b> page.

    Ari94,
Please check this link [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]
I suppose it's due to an add-on or theme, do you remember what did you install at last ?
Safe Mode is a special Firefox mode that can be used to troubleshoot and fix problems. Safe Mode temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons that might be causing problems. By comparing Firefox behavior in normal mode to its behavior in Safe Mode you may be able to pinpoint the cause of the problem.
