Hinge Looseness 13' MBP

How are your hinges on your 13" MBP? I just looked at a friends MBP and his hinges are way more tighter than mine. Both are late 2009.
Should I be worried?

"Should I be worried?"
Is it a problem? Was it an issue prior to looking at your friends?

  • How to minimize hinge wear on MBP?

Since I bought my MBP at the end of December, I've been putting it to sleep by closing the lid, mainly because I'm changing locations a lot and need to close the computer before moving it.
This means the lid is being opened and closed many times a day.
But now, after reading a number of posts on these forums regarding hinge issues (popping sounds) I'm wondering whether it's better to minimize wear on the hinge by leaving the MBP lid open whenever possible, i.e. leave it on a desk and just put it to sleep using the finder menu rather than closing the lid.
With my iBook G4 I never worried about this, and after several years of use, the hinge one day made a cracking noise and since then has been slightly wobbly and looser on closing...
Is hinge wear something I need to be concerned about with my MacBook Pro? One of the reasons I upgraded was for the more robust build (aluminum vs plastic).
I hope the hinge is more durable.

Lutetia - I don't think this is something to be overly concerned with. The lids are designed to be opened and closed. I think most of the people in the forum that have had problems with their lid are due to Manf. defects in a small percentage of machines sold. I do the same as you - I open and close the lid probably between 3 to 6 times a day and it still seems solid as a rock and does not make any noise (knock on wood . I've had mine since Nov. '08.

  • New Macbook Air 11" 2014 Model Display Hinge Loose and exacerbated by extremely poor service

I have bought a new MacBook Air 11 from Ezone on the 3rd of October.  When I opened the product, I realised that the hinge seemed to be loose and would fall back on its own when tilted. That's when my troubles started.
I went to the Maple Apple Authorised Service Center at Santa Cruz, Mumbai and was told that the product was fine and that the screen tilt was 'normal'.
I then happened to visit some other stores and noticed that the MacBooks on display didn't swing back the same way.
I returned to the Service Center again and was told again that it was 'normal'. When I demanded to see the manager, I was told he had left for the day. I rang him and was told that I should come and see him the next day and he would provide a speedy resolution to the problem.
I rang the store that I'd purchased it from and they told me that they would be happy to replace the product provided the service center gave a certificate called DOA.
The next day was an even more harrowing experience. When I reached the manager's office, he tried telling me again that the product was 'normal'. When I explained to him that none of the in store models were like that, he said that to give the certificate, he would need at least 2 days as there was a 'process' to be followed. The 'process' is to merely record how the display flips back when tilted back.
I tried to call Apple Customer Care and spoke to Nishant and then Ravi (who told me that he usually never spoke to customers directly but as a special case was speaking to me since I'd had a bad experience!).
Ravi, assured me of a ideal resolution within 24 hours.
And so today, I received a call from Nishant, who informed me that because of the nature of the inconvenience, Apple had decided to offer 2 solutions: 1. They would ship a new machine from Singapore directly to my home address but that would take 4-5 business weeks. I was fine with that solution although I didn't understand the merit of sending a new laptop from Singapore. However, he then told me that I would FIRST have to submit the laptop and ONLY THEN would they ship it out to me. So essentially, I would be without a laptop for next month and a half! In short, a ridiculous solution. 2. The second solution was that I would have to give my BRAND NEW laptop (less than 2 weeks old!) to the service centre, they would repair it and return it in a few days. So we were back to square one. When I tried to understand the escalation process, I was curtly told that there was no escalation and this was Apple's response and resolution to my problem.
So, I, the unhappy customer, was given no choice except to turn  in my machine to the service centre whereas, GLOBALLY, Apple would have replaced the machine if it was less than 2 weeks old!
Absolutely pathetic experience with no keenness to help except have longwinded calls that provided no solution whatsoever.
And this to a customer who's just bought a brand new machine and is expecting a spectacular experience! Even Lenovo or Sony offer onsite support, so the Apple experience is a terrible, terrible letdown.
I feel cheated and downright stupid for having paid such a premium for a product with manufacturing defect followed with such extraordinarily poor service!

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15' (early 2013) / Creaking noise and hinge loose

    Hi,
After a couple of months of using my Macbook Pro Retina 15' (early 2013) started to creak when closing and opening. At first it wasn't loud but now, when im not using it for couple of hours and then try to open it creaks really bad. Also i've noticed that on the left side of the hinge i've got more space then on the right side. Unfortunately my guarantee is over and i live in country where we dont have Apple Stores, ony premium resellers, and their services aren't good. In the links below you can find pictures of this loose hinge. My question here is: Does anybody know what i can do, or maybe know what needs to be done. Before taking it to my "professional" service i would like to know what's wrong with my macbook, so they won't rob me

  • Hinge loose.  Display easily tilts more than it used to.

I have two 17" Apple Studio Displays. The hinge on the display has become very loose. It will easily tilt back with just the slightest force.
In addition, it doesn't stay up at the same angle as my other display. If you pull the display up so that is in the same angle as the other display, then release it, it will slowly slide back an inch or two. This never used to happen.
Also, I noticed that on the display with the working hinge, you can't "push" the foot towards the display with any physical force. However, on the other display, you can push the foot towards the display easily. It looks like the hinge is broken.
Is there an easy fix for this?

  • Hinges weakened on MBP 13"

It seems that the hinges on my 3-month old MBP have weakened, though I can't be too sure. Once opened, the screen stands freely which isn't a problem. When I close the laptop and have it at 90 degrees the lid opens a centimetre or so if I don't have a hold on it. I can't even be sure whether this happened before or not...any ideas?
Would this be covered under warranty?
    Cheers

If there is a manufacturer's defect then yes that would be covered by warranty. You can contact Apple at:

  • Right Hinge loose - Self Repair?

    Hello All!
So I've just noticed that the hinge on the Right side of my display is loose - by that I mean the left side is solid, and the right side of the display can be moved "up and down" at the level of the hinge.
It's not that that bothers me... it's the fact that it makes a "clicking noise" if i move the computer on my lap (oh... I dare use it on my lap)... Like to pick it up or to reposition it.
What it seems like is a loose hinge screw ( there are T6 screws under there below the topcase) that could be loose.
Any of you guys "self repair" this issue? Seems as simple as removing the top case and tightening that screw.
Please feel free to chime in whether you think I should give it a shot, or let the pros handle this seemingly simple technical issue.
But if I wait to go to an apple store, I'm going to ask for a new display as it is... I'm noticing a few more dead/stuck pixels... just to make the entire repair worth my time.
Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

I had a problem with a very early titanium powerbook, the small hinge pins under the plastic cover need to be carefully removed just, do one side at a time. You might find that once you have removed the screws holding one side of the hinge that you cannot move it (seized)Gently grip the plate holding the hinge pin with a suitable pair of pliers and tease it apart. one drop of a light machine oil and replace.don't tighten the screws holding the plate to tight as the head will come of.Also do the same to the other side. The pin had got so stiff that there was movement of the keyboard edge which had cracked and if left in this state much longer would have cracked the circuit board to which it is also screwed through. Hope while looking at your computer that this makes sence. Dave

  • Dv6-6140us hinge "loose"

the right side hinge on my laptop seems loose. as far as i can tell, it's not the hinge itself, just the little plastic cover. any way to tighten this up? it's not rattling or falling off, just a tough of aspergers' HA!

You can't tighten it, but you can replace it. You can get them here for $9.95, along with instructions.

  • Mid 2012 display hinge loose (oh no not again)

Just purchased 7 of the brand new mid-2012 13" MBA's. I've noticed with all of them that when I use the protective case I've been using for more than a year that the display cannot hold itself up once I open the screen to approxiamtely 100deg-- it falls all the way back to its wide open stance ~135 deg.
Anybody else with the new MBA experiencing this?

I just bought MBA2013, it has the same problem you had.
It has past an year after you post about this matter, I wonder how you treat it after then.
I am thinking to replace it.

  • MacBook Hinge Loose?

When I carry my MacBook I can feel the lid moving slightly back and forth when its in my hand. When the lid is open, its sturdy as ever and doesn't move at all. Is this normal??
    -Thanks

I am having a similar problem.
It is most noticeable when I take my Mac book out of its sleeve.
I too am wondering if this is usual.

  • Too depressed to macbook air 2014 ( Battery, Hinges loose )

    Dear All,
Please help me about battery macbook air Early 2014, currently only use 7 hour for web .

    Hey Hien Duong,
Thanks for the question. You MacBook Air can have up to 12 hours of battery life. However, please keep in mind that this testing was performed with the following conditions:
Testing conducted by Apple in March 2014 using preproduction 1.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5–based 13-inch MacBook Air units and preproduction 1.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5–based 11-inch MacBook Air units. The wireless web test measures battery life by wirelessly browsing 25 popular websites with display brightness set to 12 clicks from bottom or 75%. The HD movie playback test measures battery life by playing back HD 720p content with display brightness set to 12 clicks from bottom or 75%. The standby test measures battery life by allowing a system, connected to a wireless network and signed into an iCloud account, to enter standby mode with Safari and Mail applications launched and all system settings left at default. Battery life varies by use and configuration. See www.apple.com/batteries for more information.

If your display brightness is set higher than 75%, or you are running additional applications (for example, GarageBand, Flash Player, etc in your screenshot) your battery performance may be affected. For more information on maximizing performance, see the following resource:

  • "SLIDER HINGE" loose and will not lock!

I have had my Palm Pre2 since April 1, 2011 and my slide mechanism will lock in place so the screen slides back and forth freely which also seems to be causing software issues.
I had an issue with my Palm Pre Plus where the screen wiggled side to side.
I have been informed that this issue is not covered under the "Warranty".
    Has anyone had this issue?

Seriously, Anthony. You haven't known of this issue with the Palm phones?
I had a Palm Pre Plus that had no such problem but over the time I had the phone I read of this issue many times.
My phone was replaced under warranty after I'd had it for a year or so because of a defective part in the plugin port for earphones.
The replacement phone they sent me has a sloppy slider. Wiggles from side to side.
If you've never encountered this issue can you ask around and find out what other folks in Tech Support may know about this problem. It's sad that the phones they sell under a 'Two Year Contract' don't last for two years.
    Thanks for your help.

  • 2010 MBP creaky/loose hinge cover

I've noticed that the black plastic part of the hinge on my MBP creaks and is slightly loose. It sometimes creaks when the laptop is just sat on the desk and alawys creaks when I pick up the laptop. The plastic cover feels noticably loose. I took it to the apple store and the man assured me that this was normal and every MBP hinge is slightly different. I regularly use a few other identical 13" MBPs and none of them have this issue, and neither do any of the MBPs I've ever tried in store.
    Anybody else have this issue?
    Thanks!
    Joe

There is nothing we users can do about your issue. Take the computer back to the repair shop and talk with the manager.

  • Yoga 11s loose hinge

One of the hinges on my two week old Yoga 11s is looser than the other.
As I open the lid and push it back, the left hinge rotates somewhat, but the right one stays firm. Finally, once I reach 180 degrees, they level out. I can also equalise them by closing the screen back up somewhat after opening it. It's not a huge difference between the hinges, but I'm aware of it, and it's kind of annoying given i've only just bought it.
    Is this single-hinge looseness normal?
Is it worth getting serviced, or are both hinges going to be as loose as barn doors in a few months time?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Don't risk it and get it fixed, imo. If the hinge breaks, your computer is useless.
