Hinge won't stay in place

The hinge holding the screen on my ibook G4 won't hold in place. Is this something anybody has tried to fix themselves and if so, how? I tried to open the back panel of the computer to get inside but could not figure our how after removing the 3 screws in the back.

The take-apart procedure for iBook G4 and similar looking iBook G3 white
computers is very tedious and in order to get to the hinge assembly and
the wires nearby, without damaging other bits, is difficult.
{The magnetic latch sometimes fails or comes loose, and that requires
removing the case and that also takes time, and extreme attention to
detail so as to not cause other problems where no one has gone before.}
There are numerous screws in hard to see places, and a guide such as
the one shown here (for an iBook G4 12" model) should be available on
the internet; a simple google search for ' ibook G4 take apart guide ' is
one way to see how these come apart. Some guides are for specific tasks
and may be for something relatively simple (for a tech) such as replacing
the DC-in Board, or replacing the keyboard, etc. There are several items.

Somewhere, I have an official service manual in PDF for my iBook G4 12"
but haven't a call to use it. There are companies such as wegenermedia.com
who repair these kinds of things, and you contact them through their site.
In any event...
Good luck & happy computing!

    I am not surprised!  The reason is IE8 does not support HTML5 or CSS3 so you are likely to struggle and waste unnecessary time trying to fix it.
    I suggest put this code on your page (in the head section) and then see if it works.  Post back with any feedback:
    <!--[if lt IE 9]>
    <script src="//html5shiv.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/html5.js"></script>
    <![endif]-->
    Good luck.

  • Powerbook G3 screen display hinge won't stay open

    Does anyone know how to tighten the hinge on the display screen?
    Once open it just flops open 180 degrees all the way, even with the keyboard.
    Thanks

    David,
    Unfortunately there is no adjustment for the hinges/clutches; replacement is the only remedy.

    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.  Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    1) Padding is only placed on the top and/or bottom of the div. The elements within this div have padding on their sides. This saves you from any "box model math". Keep in mind, if you add any side padding or border to the div itself, it will be added to the width you define to create the *total* width. You may also choose to remove the padding on the element in the div and place a second div within it with no width and the padding necessary for your design.
    .content {
        padding-top: 50px;
        padding-right: 0;
        padding-bottom: 10px;
        padding-left: 0;
    /* ~~ The footer ~~ */
    .footer {
        padding: 10px 0;

        color: #CCC;
    /* ~~ miscellaneous float/clear classes ~~ */
    .fltrt {  /* this class can be used to float an element right in your page. The floated element must precede the element it should be next to on the page. */
        float: right;
        margin-left: 8px;
    .fltlft { /* this class can be used to float an element left in your page. The floated element must precede the element it should be next to on the page. */
        float: left;
        margin-right: 8px;
    .clearfloat { /* this class can be placed on a <br /> or empty div as the final element following the last floated div (within the #container) if the #footer is removed or taken out of the #container */
        clear:both;
        height:0;
        font-size: 1px;
        line-height: 0px;
    .header img {
        display: block;

    It's caused by this CSS rule:
    ul, ol, dl { /* Due to variations between browsers, it's best practices to zero padding and margin on lists. For consistency, you can either specify the amounts you want here, or on the list items (LI, DT, DD) they contain. Remember that what you do here will cascade to the .nav list unless you write a more specific selector. */
        padding: 0;
        margin: 0;
    Try adding this to your CSS, adjust values to suit:
    .content li {
    margin-left: 45px;
    padding-left: 25px;
    line-height: 1.5;

  • My version CS won't stay open and...

    I've had CS2 for several years and it has worked with no problem until last week. Suddenly Indesign won't open, Photoshop won't open either but Space Monkey tries to open in it's place (what is Space Monkey anyhow and how did I get that!?) and it then tells me my Adobe Photoshop user name, organization or serial number is missing or invalid. Also, the Version Cue CS2 icon in the top menu bar of the computer has a red X through it and it won't stay turned on. How did this happen, and how can I get it back to running well? Thank you for any help. Shelley

    PupuleLady wrote:
    I created a new user account (can't believe I figured out how to do that), but InDesign didn't open. It made the attempt with the icon bouncing once, but then nothing.
    Thanks for helping me with this... even on a weekend.?
    Would you recommend just reinstalling the software from the disks again? If so, would that cause any problem with existing documents files on my hard drive?
    Shelley
    At this point ther are a few things that I would do.
    Before reinstalling anything I would run Diskwarrior or Disk Utility on the OS install disk. Start the computer from the DVD and run DW if you have it or Disk Utility and repair the disk. this will make sure your directory is correct. If that does not fix it. I would reinstall Indesign be sure to trash the prefs as well. If that does not fix the problem I would then do an Archive and install of the System then upgrade to 10.4.11. An A & I will give you a fresh system and a fresh user account and keep all applications and account settings . I might actually do this before reinstalling ID that way I know the app is getting installed on a fresh system.
    Something I forgot to ask. did you install anything on the computer in-between the time it worked and stopped working?

  • When upgrading to os x lion, will all my files stay in place or what?

    when upgrading to os x lion, will all my files stay in place or what?

    Yes of course, Apple knows a users files are valuable and won't just go deleting them .
    However, OS X upgrades can go bad due to unforeseen circumstances or special modifications people have done to their operating systems or even root level anti-virus installs like Norton.
    If the upgrade goes bad, your operating system can become "bricked", requiring a lot more effort to recover your files.
    Also third party programs like from Microsoft, Adobe and others may not be ready for OS X Lion, if you have any "mission critical" needs for the computer, it's best to wait several months, yes SEVERAL MONTHS, to make absolutely sure all the bugs are worked out of third party drivers, software, printers, scanners etc., and even OS X Lion itself.
    Always backup your valuable data, to write protected cd/dvd's if all possible for the reason that humans, even myself I just recently learned, can very very easily erase data on re-writable media like hard drives due to human error.
    TimeMachine is a somewhat ok image backup system, Carbon Copy Cloning of one's boot drive onto a external drive which is hold option bootable is great in case your hard drive dies, but for your most precious data, you really should be burning, labeling, dating and storing multiple cd/dvd's.

  • Mailboxes (accounts) in inbox won't stay sorted; always revert back.

    Neither my iMac or MacBook Pro will retain the order of the mail accounts. I have about a dozen different mail accounts, and I can drag them to the order I want just fine, but later they are back to the original (non alphabetized) order. They won't stay in the order I place them. I am not talking about messages, but the accounts themselves:
    MAILBOXES
    +-Inbox
    +---mac mail account
    +---otheraccount
    +---gmail account
    +---server account
    I can move "gmail account" to top, but it won't stay. It always reverts.
    Any thoughts?

    It seems that you likely have a corrupt mail preference.
    Sometimes simply rewriting it can fix it.
    Quit Mail.
    In Finder Go>Home>Library>Preferences and hold down on the option key while dragging the com.apple.mail.plist to the desktop. This will make a copy of the settings.
    Now drag the original preference list to the Trash and move the copy back in its place in the Preferences folder.
    Restart Mail.
    As to Signatures the Mail folder in the home Library holds that info.
    Remove the files from the folder and start over with the Signatures.
    If either of these issues persist then create a new user account on the computer and set up the settings in the new user account to see if the issue is across the system or user specific.
    If it is system wide then it is either the Mail application or the system itself creating the issue.
    If it is user specific then continue to completely set up Mail as you want in the new user and move the settings from the test user into the Shared folder.
    Then log into the affected user and pull those setting from Shared into the user and put them in place in the Library.
    Make sure Mail is not running when you put them in place.

  • The screen of my macbook air was pulled on too hard and now the screen won't stay up.

    A friend of mine pulled on the screen and something popped out of place and when I took it to someone to get it fixed, he told me that there is a crack somewhere in it (I don't remember what the part was called) He told me that if the part gets worse that the screen won't stay up on its own. I need a replacement part, but I wanted to know the price range for the new part.

    Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE examination.  You will be advised as to your options and then be in a position to make an informed decision.
    Ciao.

  • Contacts photos won't stay where you set the pic

    Hey I'm on a iPhone 6 plus ios8 and every time I set a contact photo to a specific place on the photo and hit done the circle always centers itself on the photo when save and won't stay on the part of the photo I choose. Does anyone have a fix or any input on this??? Would definitsly appr it.

    Thanks for the idea John, but no go. I was talking about the iPhoto Trash. I moved the photos I wanted to delete there and then emptied the Trash.
    Per your suggestion I moved the "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" from Preferences to Mac Trash (didn't empty Mac Trash because I was afraid I would lose the entire Library). When I copied the album to a new folder on my hard drive the photo I thought I had deleted re appeared. I put "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" back into Preferences just to play it safe.
    Any other ideas on where the little buggers might be hiding and how I can get rid of them?

    Anyone know of a fix after updating the last ios...ipad keeps restarting or won't stay on.  Very aggravating.

    Have you tried resetting your iPad? I don't have a lot of confidence that it will work for you, but it's an easy thing to try and a good place to start.
    Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
    If that doesn't help, you should probably restore the iOS software. You may even need to use recover mode. Both are covered in this in article.
    Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

    Win 7 Pro 32
    I have already uninstalled all things Nokia, nuked all folders  that i could find (including in c:/appdata) plus deleted all registry entries that I could find.

    @ahxsisu
    In exactly 98, now 97 days my contract is up and I can end my ordeal with the N97 and Ovi-Suite.
    I am counting the days until i can put these truly unpleasant, tedious two years behind me. Instead of making my life easier (as my trusty old Palm T|X did) The N97 and Ovi-Suite  have made things needlessly complicated and tedious.
    There were all the bugs in Ovi Suite, removed features (Music sync), buggy features were axed instead of fixed and new bugs introduces (can't add .m4a files to music).
    Worse though is the truly pathetic N97 handset, poorly designed and conceived and even more poorly executed.
    I wonder which dimwit came up with the 32 GB mass memory / 64mb main memory split? (Of which I can never get more than about 12 mb free, hence I cannot even use QT based apps.
    The thing crashes, freezes and wokrs erratically on a more or less regular basis and it's not a faulty unit, all three of my N97s exhibited the same nasty behavior.
    I have to take the battery out so frequently (~5 to  10 times a week) to restart this brick (because nothing else works) that the back cover barely stays in place now.
    That's why I am counting don the days and I will derive great pleasure in taking a big hammer to the N97 as soon as I get a new handset that most definitely won't be made by Nokia.
    The N97 and Ovi Suite have singlehandedly destroyed  almost 14 years of brand loyalty that was only overshadowed by my time with the also quite **bleep** 6280 that I eventually got exchanged for a 5800xm that worked ok.

  • Lid won't stay closed

    The lid on my 15" MBP won't stay closed. It's out of warranty, so I'm looking for something other than "take it to the dealer."

    Hi artwar24,
    It looks like you are running Panther, so you may be out of warranty. If you are and don't have AppleCare, you might try this little procedure I have used successfully for a few years.
    Caveat, this is not for the feint of heart, but with your book at eye level, sight from the side as you slowly close it. This should give you an idea as to which direction the clasp needs to be tweaked. The tension that holds the lid in place tends to tweak it out of alignment over time as it opens and closes.
    Sometimes on mine, with the lid almost closed, I’ll hold the bottom portion with one palm on the front center and exert side pressure toward the front with the other palm. This may fix it.
    Or, before the clasp catches but after it drops, hold it down with a thin object, like a popsicle stick or Q-tip. This will allow you open the lid back up so that you’ll have some working room. Then with thumb and/or forefinger, apply pressure in the direction you feel it needs to go. After a bit, you will get a feel for it.

            <p>The cable cars rely on cables running constantly beneath the  road&rsquo;s surface. The driver—or gripman—uses a lever to grip the cable to pull  the car and its passengers up the hill. The gripman requires not only great  strength, but also great skill. He needs to know where to release the cable to  coast over crossing cables and points. The conductor works in close cooperation  with the gripman, operating the brake at the rear of the car to prevent it from  running out of control on the downward slopes.</p>

            <p>Although the cable cars are now mainly a tourist attraction,  they&rsquo;re still used by local commuters to get to and from work. The California  Street line is particularly popular among commuters on weekdays.</p>

            <h2>Cable Car Tips</h2>
            <p>A single ride on a cable car costs $6. If you plan to travel  around the city, it&rsquo;s often cheaper to buy a <a href="http://www.sfmta.com/cms/mfares/passports.htm">Muni Passport</a>, which gives you  unlimited rides on San Francisco&rsquo;s extensive public transport system, including  the cable cars (but not the <a href="http://www.bart.gov/">BART subway</a> system). Even a single-day passport  ($14) will save you money if you make a return trip, and stop off to visit  Chinatown one way.</p>
            <p>There are often long lines at the cable car terminus,  particularly on the Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde routes. If you don&rsquo;t want to  wait, try walking a few stops along the route. The conductor usually leaves a  small number of places to pick up passengers on the way. The California Street  route is generally less crowded (but not as spectacular).</p>

    Hello,
    do you think about sticky-footer-technique? Nancy O. made a fine demo here: http://alt-web.com/DEMOS/CSS2-Sticky-Footer.shtml

  • Safari won't stay in my dock

    Hi,
    Since I have upgraded my Leopard to Snow Leopard my Safari won't stay in the dock. I have to place a new alias in the dock after every restart of my computer.
    Anyone any ideas why and how to prevent it?
    Thank you,

    Hello Pegg:
    Try trashing a preference file and restarting (com.apple.dock.plist). Then drag the icon from your application folder to the dock. One other observation. If you have the application moved out of the Application folder, put it back.
