Hint : Corel Draw and Corel Photo Paint 8 LE legit &  free download

I found this while searching for good software for OS9 :
http://main.system7today.com/software/corelgraphics8/corelgraphics8.html
Basically its the full Corel Suite ( has some Potoshop capabilities ) for free.
The only thing is you can only have open one document at a time , but no restrictions in save/edit or whatever. Also a great Help System how to learn graphics manipulation.
This runs extremely well under OS 9.22 with enough Ram. ( needs PowerMac CPU)
On the site is even more goodies to find. Also note that Corel has made their WordProcessor "WordPerfect" free for Mac OS. It's as good as MS Word.

I got it working myself
Maybe others are dealing with the same problem, so here is what I did:
At Corel's support website I found no information about similar problems, just a description how to set back the current workspace to factory defaults.
This is done by clicking at the program icon to start the software and then holding down the shift key immediately after clicking. Then a message box opens asking for confirmation.
Although I had done some custom settings to the workspace I had nothing to lose and gave it a try. Voila
Not sure what the reason behind is; I think that there are old configuration files existing or settings got mixed up for whatever reason.
Before I did so, I renamed the matching *.plist file at my user's library/preferences folder to *.plist.old - but this did not bring any improvement (in fact, even no new plist file became created).

  • Turn Photoshop into Corel PHOTO-PAINT

At the request of a couple of Photoshop enthusiasts in these forums, they thought I should post this feature request.

May I suggest a single suggestion, "Turn Photoshop into Corel Photo-Paint"?
In support of Harry Teasley and Mark Reynolds, I have created these lists of features included in both packages, that if not ignored might win over some Corel PHOTO-PAINT fans. Not that Adobe Photoshop is hurting for more customer base, but you get the idea. Oh! And none of these suggestions would remove any of Photoshop's existing functionality!
Here's a list of features that Corel PHOTO-PAINT has that Adobe Photoshop does NOT (as far as I know):
Mouse wheel zoom snaps to 100%.
Zoom tool actually zooms to selection bounds, even if it's greater than the document's bounds.
Cutting, copying, pasting and deleting selected layers.
    File >> New From Clipboard.
Renaming menu bar commands and moving/copying them around at will.
Mapping arrow keys to keyboard shortcuts (CTRL+up and CTRL+down are my favorite)
Interactive Object Transparency Tool (wineglass tool).
Swatches panel width @ 1 swatch wide.
    Ability to have larger swatches.
Click and hold on a swatch to see warmer, cooler, darker and lighter versions of that swatch.
Clicking a layer in the document to toggle between transform, rotate, warp and perspective.
If you select a layer, perform a single action on that layer, and undo that action, PP doesn't select the previous layer you had selected.
    Checkpoints.
    Reasonable price.
And here's a list that neither Photoshop or Corel PHOTO-PAINT has (as far as I know):
Creating new menu bar commands (wherever you want them) and assigning scripts to them.
Mouse wheel zoom does not maintain position when zooming way out and back in.
Brush strokes are not natural like Corel Painter and have a "skip rock" side-effect to them (yes, even with spacing set to 1 and smoothing checked).
Adding an alpha channel to the standard color picker.
Fully supported PNG alpha (even Photoshop creates artifacting that I've only seen present itself in Maya, but Pixelformer fixes the problem and saves the PNG appropriately). (more info)
Granted, there are a couple of features that Photoshop has, even from a Corel PHOTO-PAINT-biased standpoint, that I find extremely beneficial!
The first opened or newly-created document opens maximized (small thing, but very handy).
Vector shapes (though, still not truly vector).
Layer effects (and the drop shadows are flawless).
    The healing brush! Just awesome!
I'm sure there are a multitude of other features within Adobe Photoshop that I will grow to love, but these are the ones that stick out to me now, after having been forced to use Photoshop over the last couple years.
And I don't steal software either, so that's part of the reason I've grown up using Corel's products.

He was trying to argue that Photoshop had a more reasonable price with Elements.
I was only pointing out that Corel also has a cheaper alternative to PHOTO-PAINT. In fact, you can't even BUY PHOTO-PAINT solo. You have to buy the entire Graphics Suite.
This wasn't always the case, however.

  • After upgrade to 10.4.x Corel Photo-Paint 11 refuses to start

I upgraded from Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4.x (currently all updates done, so version is 10.4.8).
Anything works, beside a few minor things that got solved so far. However there is one big problem I deal with:
I have installed Corel Draw 11 on OS X 10.3.9 and it worked great. Now I tried to open Photo-Paint 11 (part of the package). It seems to start for a few seconds, but then does not open. No error message, nothing.
The system.log does not show any entries, same to panic.log as well as other log files I have access to.
Interestingly all other components of Corel Draw 11 (Corel Draw itself, Corel Trace and SBProfiler) are working as they should, just not Photo Paint.
Has anyone made same experiences and has a solution for this problem ? I know this software is old, but nevertheless works fine for me. So I would really look forward if someone can assist me.

    I got it working myself

  • Did Photoshop Steal Features From Corel PHOTO-PAINT?

I emailed this old-school PHOTO-PAINT tutorial guy from forever ago and he gave me this list of features that PHOTO-PAINT had before Photoshop:
PP had floating Objects before PS had layers (they are the same thing)
PP had unlimited multiple levels of undo while PS only had 1 undo.
PP had lenses before PS had styles (these were both based on methods to incorporate non-destructive alterations to objects/layers and to the image) .
PP had clip masks before PS had layer masks (again, same thing)
PP had a Paint on Mask Mode before PS had Quick Mask
    Anyone know anything about this?

Yeah I like how he stated in a previous stupid post that he's been doing this stuff for 15 years!! Come on, did anyone look at his profile pic?? I mean he's still in school and all, must have been doing this stuff when he was in diapers. You'd think he knows it all by now, oh wait I forgot he does!!
You can't possibly understand how productive this can be unless you have relied on it for so long (myself, 15 years). I literally use this command ALL the freakin' TIME!
Upon farther review I'd say he picked out a few brain cells too:

  • Iweb site and locking photos so people cannot print or download.

    Good morning all,
I finally moved over to a MAc and I cannot even begin to explain how happy I am to be away from the windows ****.
My question is in IWEB 08 on my website I want to lock the photos from downloading or printing. This is a site for our personal business not our shared site for friends.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you for any help.
    Dan

You can select "none" for download size in the page inspector in the page area.
I believe web albums created in iphoto does a better job of it though and they can easily be linked to iweb.
If someone wants them bad enough they can generally get them in some form or another.
    You might consider watermarking.

  • Import from Corel Photo Album 6

I'd like to import a library of a few thousand photos from Corel Photo Album 6 into iPhoto '08. The photos in Photo Album include a Picture Title which is stored in the Photo Album database, not in the photo file and is different from the File Name.
Is there a way to import the photos and the Titles into iPhoto '08?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't think so unless there's a way to get Corel to write the titles to the files.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Appleworks 6 draw and paint crash/restart typing in text tool, save crash

This has happened 15 times in the past week,
1st in draw when typing using text tool many times, so I got into saving, then same last night in paint, i was trying to save because familiar with problem crash and the automatic restart, this happened when trying to save file and typing file name in popup window, I lost quite a bit of work, 1hr., there is not much point in trying to use this app. if this cannot be fixed.
Also, many of the tools are grayed out and not usable, and pallets specifically line weights arrows not available. No color pallet for line, no way to draw straight line in paint mode, much more that is difficult or impossible, can't figure out easy way to make new page the size I want other than by adjusting pixel numbers.
May be or not related, when I try to open a doc file from outside, I get a popup telling me I have to buy apple software.
This macbook is new as of Jan. 2010, the box said ilife etc., so is this true, I would expect what came with the macbook to just work, no hassle.
Should I try gimp?, someone told me it is as good as photoshop even easier.
    I have paintbrush, tux, etc,
None of these apps. works as well as the old macpaint and macdraw from way back in the old black and white days. All very discouraging. This stuff should work as well as those apps. did. Oh well, I rather like the old pencil and paper, but I was trying to do a brochure.
Photos, typesetting, drawing, cut paste etc.
Isn't this what appleworks is for?
anybody out there have any suggestions.
I read 'strange behavior appleworks' and peggy's re, I don't find any appleworks in my preference folder as suggested.
Is it possible other keystroke commands like in speech app. could cause this restart?
Thank you anyone out there who reads this and might know an easy fix.
    primative

That the problem occurs when typing, this user tip might help.

  • Is this computer compatible with Corel photo impact X3

I am not sure if mac computers in general work with Corel photo impact X3, I would like to buy it, but does anyone know  any other computers that would support the software of Corel!

The system requirements of Corel photo impact X3 are:
    Intel® Pentium® III, AMD® Athlon™ 800 or above CPU
512 MB RAM (for Windows® XP), 1 GB RAM (for Windows Vista™)
Windows® XP Service Pack 2 Home Edition/Professional, Windows® XP Media
Center Edition, Windows® XP Professional x64 Edition, Windows Vista®
750 MB available hard drive space for main program and content files
An additional 320 MB available hard drive space for bonus programs
True Color or Hi-Color display adapter with 1024x768 resolutions or higher
    CD-ROM Drive
This means at a minimum you would need to install MS Windows on the Mac, you can do so however this will require purchasing MS Windows and installing using either Boot Camp or using a virtualization app such as Parallels or Fusion. If you are unfamiliar with Boot Camp please read Apple's Mac Basics: Using Windows on your Mac with Boot Camp
This may be very challenging since Microsoft dropped support of Windows XP some years ago. I would consider looking for an alternative application that runs natively on OS X.

  • Installed Lion yesterday and now have no way to open Apple Works draw and paint files.

    Anyone have suggestions?

Gene, those are incredibly old applicaitons that were based on PPC (Power PC) versions of OS X. Beginning with Lion legacy apps that are PPC based are no longer supported. There are numerous tools availalbe however you will need to do a little legwork to find what you want. I would recommend using Google and search using "Appleworks draw and paint replacements Lion"  and you will find a lot of hits. Once you have located one that will import your legacy files then you should be all set.
BTW if you would lke to provide feedback to Apple regarding this you can reach them at www.apple.com/feedback.

  • PSE 8: Color Tinting from Black and White Photo

Basically, the title says it all.  Can someone tell me how to add areas of color in a black and white photo for PSE 8?
    I really appreciate it.

Using Hue Saturation won't colorize my whole picture?  What if I just want to color a hat?  I mean, I know about hue/saturation and I know how to colorize.  But, how do you do it for something specific within that picture and leaving the rest black and white?
Select what you want to colorize and then apply the colorization methods. You might want to first feather the selection 1 or 2 px to get a soft edge. As to Barbara's first method (painting on a blank layer with Color blend mode), the color tends to be washed out. If you want a deeper color, duplicate the layer and set its blend mode to Multiply; if the result is too dark then lower the duplicate layer's Opacity.

  • Why can't I drag and drop photos from iPhoto on my iMac to my iPad?

I have thousands of photos on my iMac and often want to copy a few dozen to my iPad to bring to my relatives. It seems that I should be able to create an album on my iMac and drag it to my iPad but I can't. Didn't Apple get where it is by making things simple like drag and drop?  Why is it like a state secret to get some photos moved over? I'd really like to know the reason. I don't want a convoluted work-around. This isn't Windows!
Come on Apple, give us simplicity or at least a USB port to copy stuff!

Thanks for the reply. I guess I was a bit steamed. I know how to sync photos but object to having to treat my photos on the iPad in such an unintuitive way. Maybe I'm alone ( but I doubt it ) but I have photos on my iPad and iPhone for several different purposes. I keep photos of things I want to paint, photos of friends and relatives, photos of items I saw that I may want to buy and snapped the ISBN code. Photos of book list of authors I like that I want to read so if I see one in a used book store I remember which ones I haven't read yet. I don't think this is unreasonable or even something that only I want. I don't want to delete all of this every time I want to add another photo. I know I can back it up to my iMac and restore it plus the new photo later but this is not what I expect or want from Apple. I have had Apple products since the Apple II and Macs since March 1984 and it was because Apple always seemed to try and figure what the user wanted first and foremost but this seems to have changed. I would prefer most iPhoto and iTunes app versions from ten years ago to those coming out now because they valued intuitive interface over exotic features. Apple is the product 'for the rest of us' but not anymore it seems.
Maybe there are some good reasons why Apple is doing it, security, contracts, etc but I'd like to know. Maybe some of the users know and will give straight answers.
    Thanks, for the info though.

  • Coloring in Black and White photos

How do you color in a black and white photo?

Actually you can very easily add color to a B&W picture using the Adjustment Brush with the 'Color' option set to the color you want to paint on the image area. You may also find using the 'Auto Mask' setting helps to confine the brush strokes to the area you are trying to fill. If you accidentally paint outside an area hold down the ALT key, which puts a in the brush allowing you to remove the color.
You can also use this in reverse with a color image by first painting over the entire image using a large Adjustment Brush with Saturation set to -100. Next hold down the ALT key and paint (i.e. remove) in the area you want to reveal the original color. Optionally you can set a new Adjustment brush using the Color picker as detailed above for a B&W image to paint in a different color.
You actually have three different options for painting inside LR and maybe even more if you think outside the box!

  • Black and white photo with color

how do I leave color in a black and white photo ?

There are several ways, here is one:
    Open picture file
    Duplicate the background layer
On the background copy layer, remove the color (Enhance>convert to black and white)
Apply a mask to the background copy layer
Paint with a black brush where you want to reveal the color. If you go too far, correct with a white brush.
