Hints on conencting iMac to existing wlan

I'm a Linux/Wintel guy (tho I have become an iMac convert this week!) and am setting up a new iMac for my sister and want to hook it to the existing network in her home; it uses a Linksys WAP54G router/access point. I had the network working with a couple of laptops (windows) using WEP 64-bit encryption. I have been unable to connect the iMac using either the passphrase (ascii) or the hex key. I am presently using MAC address filtering with no encryption, but this is not optimal for their uses.
I have reviewed the forums here but have not found a definitive answer to my need. Are there any hints or URLs anyone can provide that explain iMac wireless networking? What encryption does the iMac expect...WEP, WAP, etc.? 64/128-bit? Any advice would be most useful, as I return to NC next week, and want to have this running for her.
Many thanks,
Walt

Barbara,
Many thanks! I ended up using WAP Personal, as that is the common denominator for all the machines on the network. What a pain! Your quick reply saved me many hours of sleuthing on my own...kudos.

  • New iMac with existing iPod Touch (64G) authorization problem

I got a new iMac and transferred everything over to it from my existing iMac using the migration assistant during the first boot-up. When I sync my existing iPod touch (64G 3rd gen) I get stuck in an authorization loop where the Mac says I need to authorize the computer, I do so and then it says the computer is already authorized. New CDs that I have imported into my iTunes library since I bought the new iMac will not load onto the Touch during sync and some (but not all) of the music that I have purchased from iTunes will not play on the iMac. I have already checked to make sure that I have all the recent software updates and I do.
Any idea what is going on and how to solve this frustrating problem?

Deauthorizing and reauthorizing my Mac solved the problem with not being able to sync newly imported CDs with my iPod Touch.
The problem with not being able to access some of my purchased iTunes music is a function of having 2 different iTunes accounts that I bought tunes with. I'll need to contact apple customer service to sort that one out.

  • IMac 24" loses WLAN connection again and again

    Hy everybody,
I bought a brand new intel-based iMac 24" and I'm very pleased with it. I just have one Problem that i can't resolve. I have a WPNT834 (Netgear) WLAN Router using WPA2. The iMac can connect without problems, speed is very good and the signal strenght is perfect, but from time to time my computer loses it's WLAN connection.
If this happens it doesn't reconnect. I have to disable Airport, wait a minute and enable it again.
Can anybody tell my why this happens? I mean, that the connection get lost is not so tragic, but that it doesn't reconnect is bothering me.
    Thanks in advance and regards.
    Tobi
    iMac 24"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

When you click on your Airport Status do you see more then one access point? Neighbors?
You can try changing the wireless channel on your router. That might help with the drop of connections. It's possible that another wireless access point in the area is on the same channel and causing a problem.
    Hope that helps a little,
    AL

  • Whether the screen of new imac(2011mid) exist the dust problem?

I'm considering purchase the new imac, but afraid of the dust problem of the screen?? So could anybody tell me whether the new imac(2011 mid) exist this problem??

    Hi-
    Please clarify-
Exactly which version of Microsoft Word do you have installed on your computer?
Do you by any chance have Parallels or VMware installed on your computer (in other words, are you running Microsoft Windows on your iMac as well?)
When the screen goes black, does the computer still appear to be functioning? What happens if you do the following when the screen is black: press and HOLD the command key down, and then press and release the tab key once.
Also, what happens when you just try to start up Microsoft Word normally- not by double clicking an attachment, but by double clicking on Microsoft Word in the finder?

  • Help Am New To Apples And Need HELP With Wireless Conenction Imac Mini

    Hi
First time here, i think i am running myself in circles here reading hundreds od different threads and pdf's.
What i want to do is share my broadband connection with the Imac intel dual core (Wifes), My PC and an XBOX 360. Have the pc and the xbox already connected to the router which is a belkin wirelss pre-n router. the Pc is connected by cable to back of router port 1, the xbox 360 is wireless to the router.
What i want to know is do i need to get anything else for the imac to connect it to the router as it says it has airport extreme wireless networking.
My way of looking at it is that i neeed nothing else and it should just see a wirelless network from the router and connect to that, is that right?
If i am way off do i need something else to plug into the router to make the apple go wireless.
I haven't trierd it yet as we only just got it (the mac) and like to be in charge of all the facts first before setting networks up
MAny thanks for looking and thanks in advance of any help

  • New Apple iMac with Existing Software

I currently use 64 bit Lightroom 3.0 MLP on my PC.  I justed ordered the new Apple iMac 27 inch and I'm trying to get confirmation as to whether or not my software will work on the iMac.  Some people say it will be fine and others said that I'll have to order an iMac that's reconfigured.  Help, does anyone know if the software has to be ordered special for iMacs?

    >The same serial number will work on Mac and/or Windows (max 2 activations).
The serial number will actually work on as many installations as you try it on. You would just be breaking the license agreement if you actually do that so I'd advise against that. This is different from the CS apps where the license is actually checked over the internet and you need to deactivate your old installation if you upgrade your computer which is always a pain. WIth Lightroom if you upgrade your computer, you can just wipe the old computer's harddisk and not be worried that your license number won't work on the new computer.

  • How can I apply existing WCS "WLAN Config" templates to a new WLC?

We've been running a pair of WLC 4402s managed by WCS, thus we are still on the older 7.0.235.0 (WCS) / 7.0.235.3 (WLC) release. I'm trying to add an additional WLC 4402-50 as a hot spare. I first ran the manual setup steps to give it an IP in our range, and used the WLCs web page to set our SNMP communities and such to the values used by our existing WLCs, then I added the new WLC in WCS.
At this point I could apply most of the "Controller Templates" from our existing configuration to the new unit. However, I can not get it to take our existing interfaces nor our WLAN Configurations. How do I avoid needing to recreate these from scratch on the new WLC?
We only have four dynamic interfaces, and each WLC needs its own IP address for each interface, so I did manually add these via the WLCs web page. However, now when I go to the WCS' "Configure > Contoller Templagte Launch Pad" page, then select "WLANs > WLAN Configuration", I see my usual list of WLANs, but can't figure how to push them to the new WLC.
For all of the other templates on the launch pad, I can select a template, click the "Apply to Controllers..." button, and I get a list that has my existing two and also the new controller. I can select the new controller, and apply the template, and it succeeds.
Yet if I select a specific WLAN config, and press "Apply to Controllers...", the list that appears has only my existing two WLCs, not the the new one.
In small green type at the top it says, "Controllers configured with Interface/Interface Group - 'w-restricted'  and selected RADIUS server(s), LDAP servers, ACL Name with rules and  Ingress interface are shown."
I have already manually added the interface "w-restricted" to the new controller, and have added the RADIUS servers via the template used by our other two WLCs. Not sure what to do about "LDAP servers, ACL Name with rules and  Ingress interface", as we don't have any ACL rules, nor use LDAP directly from the WLCs (as all user ID stuff is via RADIUS).
Any hints on what manual setup I should add to get the new WLC in the list for these WLAN Configs?
    Thanks,
    Steve

To be honest, if your only adding another WLC, your better off creating the interface and WLAN's manually. I don't like pushing out templates to create new WLAN's. I would use it to adjust an existing WLAN, but that would be it. To me it's safer. Also your new WLC is on the same code? If you really want to figure it out, I would manually add the interfaces first then refresh the co fog from the new WLC and then push out the WLAN SSID and see if it takes. If not, don't waste your time anymore and create it manually.

  • Configure a new Time Capsule via iMac in a home non-apple WLAN

Hi, I have a new Time Capsule and want to configure it via my iMac. Aim is to use the TC in an existing WLAN (Vodafone) and to have it as a backup device in my home WLAN. When I start the TC it always turned to a blinking amber. This is regardless if I have it wire connected to the WLAN Router or not. I tried it also wireless with pressed WPS key.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Joe

When I start the TC it always turned to a blinking amber
This is normal, as the Time Capsule has yet to be configured with the correct settings to work with your existing network.  When the Time Capsule has been setup correctly, it will display a green light.
The Time Capsule needs to connect to your wireless router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection.
Specifically, the Ethernet cable would connect from a LAN <--> port on the Vodafone router to the WAN (circle of dots) port on the Time Capsule.
Use Apple's configuration wizard as noted in the Setup Guide to set up the Time Capsule to create a new wireless network.
Once that is done, you can go back in using AirPort Utility to turn off the wireless if you don't need another wireless network. In that case, the Time Capsule becomes a back up hard drive only.
Macs can back up to the Time Capsule using either a wireless or wired Ethernet connection.

  • Does my time capsule HAVE to join my existing wireless network please?

ok i am trying to get my TC to join my wireless network but its not having it!!
(it was but now i cant seem to get it to work)
so my question is....can i just have its as its own separate wireless network just to talk with my macbook & imac so they can back up wirelessly please?
or would this cause problems as they are on my personal home wireless network??
    anyone know please?
    thanks!

so my question is....can i just have its as its own separate wireless network just to talk with my macbook & imac so they can back up wirelessly please?
You can do, but you don't need to.
If you create a separate WLAN for your Time Capsule then you'll need to switch your clients to the TC WLAN to make their backups, then switch them back to the regular LAN when they're done. Bear in mind that your regular WLAN (and, presumably your internet access, etc.) will be unavailable while you're switch to the other WLAN.
There has to be a better way, surely? Of course. If your existing WLAN is working well enough for you, then just connect the TimeCapsule to your existing network via an ethernet cable. Now it will be part of your LAN, all your clients can see it and back up to it, but you don't have any issues with having to switch AirPort networks on the client (in effect, your client sends its data wirelessly to your existing base station which then forwards the data over the ethernet LAN. Problem solved.

  • "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. Form more information, see setup log files"

Ok so back in August 2014 I succuesfully used bootcamp to install Windows 10 Tech preview. It worked great until March of this year when Windows issued an update (Which I had no control over).  After this update the R9 4GB graphics card driver stopped working.  I contacted Apple/AMD/Microsoft but was unable to fix this problem.
So,  I uninstalled Windows 10 through bootcamp and restored the drive to a single partition. I purchased windows 8.1 and downloaded Windows Enterprise edition (as this comes as an ISO file) and started the process again with Bootcamp. Everything works great until I get to the installation of windows.
I did the same as last time (formatted the Bootcamp partition) and tried to continue the installation. I now get the following message:
I have tried a complete reinstall of the system twice (back to factory settings) but still the same issue.  I have also tried using Windows 10 Tech preview but still the same issue. (I only have my remote drive with the ISO file connected to the mac and have tried with a USB stick)
Any ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks

Thank you for your prompt response.  Please see below:

  • How can I extend an Airport Express in WLAN mode with an additional Airport Express box

I'm trying to extend the existing WLAN with an additonal Airport Express box. I read through a bunch of comment throughout the communities here but didn't find what I'm looking for.
    My actual Installation consists:
A Time Capsule attached to the Internet router which set up my 1. WLAN range
This WLAN has been extended with an Airport Express BOX creating my extended 2. WLAN range
Now I intend the extend the 2nd WLAN of the Airport Express BOX with an additional Airport Express (creating a 3rd WLAN range) but don't find a way on how to set it up correctly.
The physical situation of the location dosen't allow me to add / replace cabeling (Ethernet or similar). If there is any chance I'd like to avoid power-line connections. And, I'm aware of the impacted bandwith on WLAN / WLAN extensions, but can deal with this.
Regards and thanks for any advice

Two requirements that must be met to do what you want.......
    1) An AirPort Express 802.11n must be used. Check the Model No on the label on the side of the Express. It needs to be A1264. Any other model number will not do what you want.
    2) The Express must be configured to "Join a wireless network" and the option to enable Ethernet Clients must be checked.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
The box to "Allow Ethernet Clients" must be checked
Please check to verify that your AirPort Express meets both requirements

  • Upgraded to mountain lion, can no longer see D110 on WLAN

I recently upgraded my iMac to Mountain Lion.  It is connected to my FiOS home router via Ethernet (wired).  I have a Photosmart D110 on my WLAN.  Prior to the upgrade, everything worked fine.  Since the upgrade, the iMac can no longer see the D110.
If I put the iMac on the WLAN it sees the D110, but it can't see it when the D110 is on WiFi and the iMac is on wired Ethernet.  I'd like to keep the iMac on wired Ethernet, is there a fix?
I did try deleting the printer, connecting it via USB, and re-adding it to see if it would install any software updates, but I'm still having the same issue.
    Thanks!

fixed - found out I had to turn off IGMP Proxy in my FiOS home router.  Why, I don't know.

  • Retina iMac 3tb Fusion drive Boot Camp failure

Trying to install Windows 8.1 to a 1tb Bootcamp partition on 3tb Fusion drive. BCA creates the partition, Windows installer sees it, but requires formatting it, but then it can't install to it. I get an error that it can't create or see the partition. I'm assuming this has to do with BCA creating the partition someplace Windows can't handle it (past the first 2.2tb of the drive).
Here is the info requested in a previous thread.

  • WLAN override ::: how to use it smart?

All, I have an existing WLAN with more than 100APs. I now want to add one guest-WLAN SSID to four APs.
Now, as I understand the procedure I would need to do the following:
    1. define the new SSID globally and enabled it
    2. go manually to all the remaining 96 APs and use WLAN override to diable the new guest network where it should not be.
Is there any other way which could save me from modifying 96 APs by hand?

If you have WCS and are using LWAPP you can just make a template for WLAN override and apply it to the APs you wish to modify.
I'm not sure if you can use a template without WCS, though- I haven't tried.

  • Cisco 876w: wlan client - routing problem

I configured a Cisco 876w to connect to an existing WLAN as a client. Now I would like to connect 3 PCs to the 876w which should be able to access the internet via the 876w.
    Problem:
Being at the console (ssh) of the 876w, I can ping hosts in the internet (even with their name like www.google.com) but when I'm using a client PC, I can't... What am I missing here? Could it be a NAT problem?
    Config:
Internet <--->  DSL Router 192.168.1.1 (and WLAN AccessPoint)  <--->  Cisco 876w (gets IP per DHCP, VLAN1 IP: 10.10.10.1) <---> PC (10.10.10.101)

Cisco Configuration Professional (Cisco CP) is installed on this device
and it provides the default username "cisco" for  one-time use. If you have
already used the username "cisco" to login to the router and your IOS image
supports the "one-time" user option, then this username has already expired.
You will not be able to login to the router with this username after you exit
    this session.
It is strongly suggested that you create a new username with a privilege level
of 15 using the following command.
    username <myuser> privilege 15 secret 0 <mypassword>
Replace <myuser> and <mypassword> with the username and password you
