Hiring someone to update my Mac OS X 10.4.11

Hello.  I had posted a question earlier regarding updating my computer but I am not computer savvy at all.  Can anyone recommend in the Los Angeles area someone I could hire to come and do it for me?

Updating the RAM and upgrading/updating the OS aren't that difficult for the end user to do.
Before upgrading the OS, you would need to upgrade the RAM.
This is the only user upgradeable/installable hardware in an iMac.
It is, also, not very hard to do.
First you need to purchase the additional RAM.
Your iMac can take 4 GBs of RAM max.
There are two reliable online sources for Mac RAM. Crucial memory or OWC.
RAM for iMacs is fairly cheap to buy, now.
Here's the specs of the RAM your iMac takes
3.0 GB (4.0 GB can be installed, only 3.0 GB will be addressed)
Memory Slots     2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
And here's the procedure  for replacing and installing the RAM in your iMac.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423
As you can see from the diagrams, this is not too hard to do.
Next, you will need to purchase a retail copy of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. This disc can be directly purchased from Apple by calling 1-809-MYAPPLE. Ask for retail software sales. They will have OS X 10.6 for $19.99 plus shipping.
Once you receive this disc, before installing OS X 10.6, if your iMac has a lot of data on it that is important to you that you wish to  save, the easiest and most direct way to so this is to purchase an external FireWire 400 hard drive and copy all of the data from your iMac to your new external hard drive. This is a backup or safety for your data Innthe event something does go wrong with upgrading/installing your new OS.
Search online for FireWire 400 external Hard drives. Should give you results where to find and purchase.
You need to download a program that will exactly copy of the contents of your iMac's hard drive to the new drive you just purchased. There are two programs that do this. One is called CarbonCopyCloner. The other is called SuperDuper.
Either one of these programs is capable of copying/duplicating the contents on the hard drive of your iMac.
Once you have done this, you can now insert the install disc, you purchased, and follow the instructions to begin the installation process of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
There are install options I am not sure which options retains all of your data and all the various settings already setup in your iMac.
It's either going to be an Update Install or an Archive Install.
Someone else maybe able to tell you this for sure.
Once the installation is all completed and your iMac is back up and running and everything appears to be functioning OK.
Under OS X system preferences panel click on the Software Update icon.
Click on find updates to update your system to OS X 10.6.8. And, also, to update any other software on your iMac.
Once allof this is all complete, locate your name home folder, Applications folder, Utilities folder and look for the Disk Utility app. Dbl. click this app to launch it . Do a permissions repair on your iMac's main drive.
Once your iMac is up to date, your dock should have an icon for Apple Mac Apo store in it now.
If you choose to upgrade the OS further, you need to click on the Mac App Store icon in your OS X dock and search to see if OS X 10.7 Lion is available for purchase and download.
If OS X 10.7 Lion isn't available for purchase and download , you may have to contact Apple software sales, again to see if it can be purchased in a different manner.
You could also do another software update in the system preferences panel to see if the option to upgrade to OS X 10.7 Lion appears, also. It may not, but won't hurt to try this.
My advice, since your iMac is fairly old, I would stay on OS X 10.6.8 and NOT upgrade to OS X10.7 Lion.
This is the best I can do to walk through what is a fairly involved , but very user doable OS upgrade.
I know there is a chance I missed something so, hopefully, other really experienced users here will fill in any gaps I may have missed.
It seems like a lot of steps until you've tried this once.
Doing OS upgrades isn't quite as bad the more times it's done.
If you choose to,try this yourself, then good luck!
Every one here in these discussion forums is here to help you if you need it.

I have just updated my mac but now I am unable to open my itunes can someone help me please

    This worked for me:
1 Go to the finder menu bar at the top of the screen
    2Click go
    3 click applications
4 go down to iTunes and right click on Show Package Contents
5 open contents folder then go to mac os folder
6 open the terminal marked iTunes in that folder
This should force it to open and function enough, it will not allow importing of music from a desk top

  • Adobe Photoshop CS2 Error messages after update to mac os 10.4.6

After updated to mac os 10.4.6 everytime I use Photoshop CS2 I receive an error message "Could not complete your request because of a program error"
I did all the workarounds that were described in document 331627 from Adobe's website and nothing worked.
I also subscribe to maxosx.com support and someone suggested removing the legal.localized/Tien...file from the photoshop cs2/legal directory, but everytime I tried to select the directory "legal" from within the finder view, it disappeared and closed the finder window.
    HELP!

Did you upgrade from a previous version of OS X like 10.3.x or 10.2.x or from a prior version of 10.4.x? If the former, there are probably some files in your previous system folder that need to be restored.
Otherwise, double click Photoshop when it's closed, and then IMMEDIATELY hold Command + Option + Shift. You'll get a box for resetting the settings. Select Yes and maybe that will help.

  • Need help!  I have a plug-ins issue in illustrator CS4 after updating my MAC OS from Mavericks to the new YOSIMITE

    Hi,
My Adobe CS 4 ran perfectly find up until I updated my MAC OS from Mavericks to the new YOSIMITE. When I launch illustrator CS4 I get a window message the reads   "some plug-ins in the additional Plug-ins folder are conflicting with application or user plug-ins. It will skip loading plug-ins from additional plug-ins folder."  there is a OK button that I must click on to close the message window and then illustrator will continue loading process, then a second window will appear reading  "Error loading plug-ins.  PhotoshopImport.aip"  there is a OK button that I must click on to close the message window and then illustrator will continue loading and launch.
The problem is when I open a current file that has a psd link I will get a window message reading  "could not find a plug-in to read the link file _______ choose repair to locate the missing file, replace to select another file, or ignore to leave the link unchange."   When selecting a psd link /file it is greyed out which I cannot select it.  I can not select, choose, import or open any files/links that is a psd.
Would someone please help me resolve this issue please!!!

I have the same issue! Did you get a solution yet?

My Macbook Pro has a black screen when running in Bootcamp Windows 7. Since I updated the mac side my windows side now starts up with completely black screen - no prompt, nothing, Cap keys still light up as does mouse and DVD drive seems to run.
Will not show up in safe mode, will not show when started from Windows 7 DVD.
I suspect the Mac update wiped out my PC video drivers but can not think of a way to re-install?
Can see the PC volume from Mac side with files.
I've looked at all the online solutions so far and have tried most of them without success. Please help!

    EDIT: RESOLVED
For anyone else who finds their way here like I did, this link did it for me: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/527599/windows-8-issues-solved-please-r ead-if-you-39-re-having-black-screen-and-or-flickering-/
Specifically, the posts by Dunsany and valkyr did the trick.  I booted in safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the Nvidia driver, disabled automatic driver installation, and restarted normally.  I then manually downloaded and installed the previous Nvidia driver for my graphics card (which at the time of this writing was 335.23, rather than the latest which was 337.88), and everything is now bueno!
Two hiccoughs along the way: First, when I tried to uninstall the Nvidia driver the first time, when I restarted I got the login screen (which was a good sign), but it quickly went black again.  I powered down, restarted in safe mode again, and repeated the uninstallation process, and it worked the second time.  Second, when I started the manual install of the 335.23 driver, the computer played a sound similar to the one for disconnecting a USB device, and the screen went black.  I'd seen a lot about trying to increase the brightness (though it hadn't worked up to this point; but if you haven't tried it yet, might as well); I tried it, and it worked! So far I'm back up and running. [/fingers crossed]
    Hope this helps someone else!

  • Someone elses updates appearing in my app store???

So today I opened my app store and I had two updates. One for final cut and other for angry birds which i've never installed on my system. I thought what the heck and pressed update on angry birds, but then a window popped up that told me to log in with some random russian account. So im thinking that was the account who that angry birds update belongs to. My question is WTH? How the heck did this happen? How is there someone elses updates in my app store? I can't even hide that update... How to remove it?

When a stranger's Apple ID appears on your Mac in conjunction with an update for an app that you have never installed, you have a pirated app on your Mac. This is the closed Apple ID of a know and admitted Russian app pirated. This pirated app has been cracked with the MAS receipt from a free app, often Angry Birds, acquired by the person whose Apple ID you see. However, the pirated app is not Angry Birds. Angry Birds is not the app that you are looking for on your Mac.
You may or may not have realized that it was a pirated app when you installed it. You may have believed that it was a trail version or a "free" version.
All MAS apps have a MAS receipt in their app bundle. Check any app acquired from the MAS. Right click on the app's icon in your Apps folder and choose Show package contents. In the Contents folder is a _MASReceipt folder and in that folder is the coded MAS receipt. It has the Apple ID of the MAS account that bought/acquired the app from the MAS. It is that receipt that the MAS uses to alert you that an app has an update. There would not be a notice of an update with someone else's Apple ID showing in the MAS on your Mac, if there was not an app with a receipt from this person's account somewhere on your Mac.
    Download the free app FindAnyFile (FAF);
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
This app is easier to use and seems to be more powerful than Spotlight. Open FAF and in the box type _MASReceipt and press Find. It should come up with a list of every app on the Mac with a MAS receipt. Compare the apps with receipts in FAF's list with your purchased apps list in the Mac App Store. The odd app out should be the pirated app.

No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

hello, I update my mac pro to 10.10. Why the photoshop cs6 change to slowly now. When I change the tools like brush to command+Z, It's will be freeze a while. why? and how can I improve?

what a long post....Apple, btw, does not read this stuff, so ranting, raving, and complaining here might make you feel good, but it does no good at all. That being said, I, too have a Mac Pro Quad Core Xeon with 6 gigs of ram and an nVidia 8800 GT graphics card (not as good as yours, alas) and I've had no problems at all with it. Yes, it doesn't have Thunderbolt, but maybe we Mac pro owners will get lucky and someone will come out with an adapter (probably not). No, you probably don't have to throw away your Mac Pro, but if you do, I'll take it, for a small "recycling" fee >:-) That was a joke.  Yes, the Mac Pro's future isn't quite clear, YET. Hopefully that will improve very soon. As for not being able to upgrade to Mountain Lion. Don't worry about that too much, Nobody is forcing you to do that.  Your Mac Pro won't quit working if it isn't installed. From what  I've heard, you should give the new OS a chance, and wait to get it, in case there might be some bugs, or stuff not working with the new OS, which has been known to happen. Yes, we Mac Pro owners don't like being treated like mushrooms-kept in the dark, and being fed......... but Apple is Apple and it will do what it does, and there is nothing you or me can really do to change that. All I can say is....trust, have faith, be patient, go for a walk, do something else to take your mind off of this problem. IF apple decides to drop the Mac Pro for good, and that's a big "IF", I think they will anger a whole bunch of people
which isn't good. However, that hasn't happened...YET. Let us hope that it doesn't

Is it possible for someone who updated my phone on their Mac to read all my current messages? And if so how can I stop it?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I really doubt it. To do that, that person must have stolen your Apple ID email and password, and then, log in Messages in his/her iPhone with your Apple ID to read your messages. The Apple ID of an iPhone doesn't change when you connect it to your Mac, so don't worry
