Hiss in GB3

Hello all,
I just got my MBP a few days ago. heres the setup....
2.16 ghz
2 gigs ram
15 inch screen
100 hd @ 7200 rpms
think that contains everything you might need to help with the problem.
I am trying to record my guitar in GB3. I have the 1/4" to 1/8" converter cable made by monster. It is the one suggested in the recording your guitar online seminars.
I switched to a real instrument and the line-in instead of the built in mic. I am plugging the monster cable into the audio line in. I have experimented with different amp sims and EQs and basically they only way I can get rid of the hiss is by killing the volume completely. The hiss is present with all the amp sims.
Please help
Thank-you
  Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Unfortunately, the direct line in with guitar method is not the best audio quality, then when you add an amp sim or any form of gain it will amplify the noise that is already there. The only thing you can do with what you have already is to use the gate. That won't remove the noise, but it will cut off the sound below a set volume level.
Otherwise, I would suggest dumping the Monster cable converter and getting a digital interface.
Good luck and welcome to the forum.

  • WEIRD HISSING SOUND IN GB3

hey everyone, im having some trouble with my imac/mbox/garageband. Sounds will play out of my studio monitors through the mbox, but when i go to record, it records a really loud hiss/static. Can anyone please help me out?

Depends on how busy the store is. If you go very early, probably not. Otherwise you can make an appt. there. I would try to go at least busy times. You can also make appts. online thru the Apple.com and find that store store and then make the appointment. Go to the Apple main page, near the top click on "where to buy" and you can find it there.

  • Loops not playing right in GB3

I had a project I had created in GB2, and recently needed to open it and do some more stuff to it for a new project. The odd thing is, a couple of the loops (midi) that worked fine, play with the wrong sound now in GB3. For instance, Mellow Latin Conga doesn't sound like congas (well, none of my conga loops sound like congas in the timeline) in the timeline, but sound perfectly fine when clicked on in the library.
I checked the track info, and there are no conga sounds under drumkits. Also, while there, there were names for other instruments, but when clicked on I got an error they didn't exist.
When I first tried to open GB3, I got an error that it needed valid music libraries and needed to be reinstalled (I noticed when I fired up iDVD last week for the first time, it didn't have the libraries anymore either).
So, any way to alleviate this? I did a reinstall once. Is there a way to do a clean install of GB3? The iLife disk, when trying to do a custom install of only GB, has it greyed out.
    Thanks for any help!

I've never actually tried to re-install an old version of GB, so I can't say firsthand what the process is (i.e. I don't know if this is the cause of GB being disabled in the Installer), but I guess what I would do is search my hard drive for "GarageBand" and delete all the relevant files and folders (not my own, stuph, obviously), then try the install.

  • Upgrade to GB3 results in "fried" JamPacks

got complete JamPacks and they ran fine with GB2. Upgraded to GB3, and almost all loops are missing, almost all categories are greyed out, (when I click "all drums" there are only 4 loops).
So, short of re-installing all my JamPacks, is there a way to tell GB3 where to find them??

I am having the same problem but it doesnt affect all songs. for example song1 wont have access to most loops. buttons are greyed out. I can open song2 or create a new song and all loops are available again. I have moved loop folders around. I have reindexed, I have deleted the plist and cs files. I have tried everything that I can find info on here and still cant get song1 to see all loops.
There seem to be many bugs with GB3 and Apple needs to fix them quickly. I am really missing my pc with sony acid right now.

  • Hissing from high volume

how do i get rid of hissing as if the volume is turned up high? and still keep the volume audible? what filter?
    thanks

    Hi A.
There are a number of audio filters built in to FCP that will help you to deal with this kind of problem audio ... for a start you might want to try either a High Shelf (or a Low Pass) filter:
Audio Filters > Final Cut Pro > High Shelf
Audio Filters > Final Cut Pro > Low Pass
You have many more options too, check out Jon Chappell's excellent introductions to the various filters available to you in FCP, their purpose and their controls here:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/basic_audio_filterguide.html
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/basic_audio_filter_guidept2.html
Depending on how prevalent the noise is, and how well it responds to attenuation through the basic filters available in FCP, you might also want to check out the option of sending your audio to SoundTrack Pro and dealing with the issues using the far greater capabilities of that dedicated audio app:

    Hope it helps

  • Have NO idea how to link GB3 to Rode mike via Focusrite Saffire

Hey there folks- I asked for help in working out what equipment was needed to connect a decent enough mike to my MacBook Pro's GarageBand 3 and was told that the Focusrite Saffire with the Rode NT-1 mike would be as professional a set up as any without totally breaking the bank.
Well- I have finally made it and have bought it! Pop filters, tripod stands and headphones and stuff...
Lass sings like an angel and needs to monitor her backing tracks (which I must record as one track), sing and be recorded and I must mix the two to produce her vocals over the backing.
Now- I have NO idea what on EARTH I am doing and neither come with much by way of instruction.
The Saffire has the mike lead on socket 1 with the other end in the Rode mike. Saffire is attached to the MBPro via Firewire but I am not clear where the headphones connect and so forth.
Software is now installed and NOW WHAT?
I realise how much easier it is to pay someone to sit and DO this stuff but she is wanting to do it at home (quite frankly for the price of the equipment we would only GET one day of recording at our local studio).
IS there a fool-proof and VERY simple tutorial on what connects to what, how I play a track for her from where (do her headphones plug into the Saffire or the MBPro?) so she can sing to it and I can import it to Garageband for me to eventually mix the vocals to, and how to GET the vocals onto the MBPro?
I guess I am asking for a tutorial for idiots for the Focusrite (physical and software) and also for Garageband 3 when used with this kind of external equipment because I am realising that I have not only to make sure the physical equipment is attached just so but also that the Saffire software works and then GarageBand 3...

Thanks for that. The two headphone outlets on my Saffire (not the LE- the dearer one... LOL!) are obvious, but because I use GarageBand and NOT the software for the Saffire, I cannot get them to work. It is simply not possible to output to the Saffire and get sound to emit from them. And yes- I do know they have separate controls for volume.
Not sure why I ought NOT to monitor from the Mac? It works perfectly well... Not ideal as I had to buy a headphone splitter so that I could monitor together with the singer but hey- at least she can now hear herself as well!
I wouldn't mind HAVING the Saffire work but it didn't matter what settings I adopted on ANY of the sound controls they were just not working right, so if you have a clue (so nice to actually find someone else who uses this set up?) I'd be grateful (although I would then need to find another adaptor for the headphone jack... LOL! Never simple, is it?).
I guess that I am doing everything via GB3 and NOTHING via the Saffire Control...

  • Macbook Pro Retina 13" fan hiss on start up?

Hi there community. My 13" Retina MBP makes a slight "hiss" noise whenever I turn the machine on or I resume it from sleep. In a quiet environment it is noticable, and I know it comes from the fan starting up. When the machine is up and running though, the only noise I hear from the fan is a regular low-profile noise (about 1000rpm), which is completly normal. Any answers?

I hear a very FAINT noise in my 15" rMBP, when I first got mine thet other day the FAN came on really loud and that's the last time i ever heard the FAN.  But this new 2013 rMBP is a 1000 times more quiet than my 2008 MBP.  Sometimes I wonder if it's even RUNNING it's so quiet.  Apple really did a nice job putting the SSD drive in and although I hate to admit it leaving out the Optical drive made this machine lighter and the quietest machine ever built.

In my first iPhone 5, the speaker didn't work and people could not hear me on Speaker phone when I used it. When I used the video recording it did not record sound at all only a hissing/static sound, no voice. I wished for a software fix. I did a hard reset, nothing. I did every step in the link that i have been provided with (thank you), but I’m
still experiencing the same issue. My experience with Apple has been
excellent and this has been the first time I have experienced something
like this with an Apple product. I hope we can find a quick solution.
In order to get the iPhone 5 as soon as it launched (being a major fan of
Apple products!), I purchased my iPhone 5 from the UK through a friend of
    mine who lives there.
My question is: can I have the faulty device replaced within Saudi by one
of the official resellers here (we have 3: STC, Mobily and Zain)? I want to
avoid the disruption, complication and expense of sending it back to the
    UK.
Could you advise whether this is possible or not, and if not how should I
go about having the device replaced?
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

    Nice try! Take a hike.

  • Audigy Throbbing & Hissing in Game

I have had a SB Audigy (the original I guess) for over 5 years and had no "issues" with it playing World of Warcraft on a P4 XP system with 2Gb of DDR, dual 80Gb EIDE dri'ves and an old NVIDIA card.
Last weekend, I built a new system using an Intel mobo, Core 2 Duo, 300Gb SATA HDD, NVIDIA 9500GT PCIe, 4Gb of DDR2 and a new 650W PSU (which exceeds system requirements by 250W). I formatted the HDD and did a "clean install" of Windows XP (Home), updated to SP3 and all "critical" updates. I installed the Audigy card, front-panel "dri've" and ran the auto-run from the Audigy installation CD. I am running only 2 desktop speakers with a subwoofer, so 5. is not an issue for me. I just want "normal" sound, not full-immersion "Star Wars" THX or whatever... Just normal stereo sound. There is nothing else connected to this PC- no HDMI TV, no digital sound outputs, nothing. Just 2 speakers and a monitor.
Everything worked fine until I went to play WoW- as soon as the login screen appeared, I got a rhythmic, regular (like a marching drumbeat) throbbing sound, frequently punctuated by horrible pops, screeches and a continuous hissing static in the background, with the WoW music struggling to be heard below all of that. I checked and unchecked "Use Hardware" in the WoW sound settings, but nothing changed at all. This persisted as long as I was in-game (which wasn't long, what with my ears bleeding and all), and stopped the minute I logged out of WoW. I am NOT running 2 graphics cards in SLI- just one, with a single display. I have a brand new system with a clean install of everything.
So I went back to Windows Update and installed the latest Creative?driver package (from Windows Update, not directly from Creative). After reboot, I had no sound of any description from my Audigy. Device Manager reported everything Creative was installed and "working," but I had no sound at all. So I uninstalled all Creative apps and drivers, using Add-Remove Programs *and* Device Manager on each Creative device, rebooted, and re-installed everything from the 5-year-old Creative Audigy CD-ROM. Sound began working immediately.... until I logged back in to World of Warcraft, at which point... [LOOP to preceding paragraph].
I have read several threads here, none of which seems to apply to my situation- probably because I have an older Audigy card and all the gamer whiz-bangs have long since left that technology in their wake. The thread on troubleshooting is hopelessly out of date, doesn't even mention SATA dri'ves and cites Pentium-era?BIOS settings that haven't been available on more recent mobos for years. Nonetheless, I checked for interrupt conflicts (none) and disabled Serial and Parallel ports, onboard video and audio as suggested in that thread; and I also moved the card to the PCI slot furthest away from the graphics card, as suggested in that thread. None of the other BIOS settings mentioned there are even available on this new mobo. The same Audigy card and software worked FINE two days ago in my old system, including playing World of Warcraft. Now it doesn't, leading to the inescapable conclusion that the card is fine, but there is something in its (or WoW's) settings causing it to freak out in my new PC.
I have updated ALL chipset drivers and BIOS to the latest available on Intel's website, with no effect. Onboard sound and video are both disabled in BIOS and thus don't even appear in Device Manager. I am VERY reluctant to install newer Creative drivers because every time I have done?that over the past 5 years or so, the sound stops working completely and I have to either try to "Roll Back Driver" (which generally crashes the machine) or uninstall and then re-install everything from the original Audigy CDR. I would very much appreciate some specific information on settings (Audigy settings, BIOS settings, Registry hacks, whatever) to make this card work in World of Warcraft on an Intel mobo/chipset Core 2 Duo machine.
    Thanks-

Yes, the game is Call of Duty 2I don't know the codec,I use the EAX for games for the Audigy. But even when I turn off everthing (audio wise) I still get the video lag, shutter effect. I pulled out the card, unloaded the drivers, put in my 24 bit li've..no problems. Uninstalled 24 bit li've, reinstalled Audigy...problems again.Allso? JTLYK... I did purchase a "Refub" Audigy from the Creative store.

  • Hissing/Popping/Crackling/Cracking in iTunes 6.05 w/ Quicktime 7.1

I reformatted and installed Windows 2000 Server. I used to use Windows 2000 Professional, and iTunes worked fine. Now, installing the latest iTunes 6.05 with Quicktime 7.1, I get hissing/popping/crackling/cracking at semi-random intervals (as bizarre as it may sound, with one song it seems to always occur around 10 seconds into the piece if it is the first song I play with iTunes. In another song it tends to be within the first second, but it's not as consistently within that first second as the other is at 10 seconds. After the first crackle, I usually can listen for 2-5 minutes before another crackle occurs.) . I can play the MP3's fine in Quicktime 7.1, VLC, and Windows Media Player 6.4. I'm running a Creative Soundblaster Audigy sound card. I have muted all items in Volume Control excepting Wave and Master. I have experimented toggling with the Quicktime "Sound Out" section (as suggested in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93610). I have done various combinations of "safe mode" checked/not checked, 44.1/48/96 kHz, 8/16/24 bit, and Stereo/Quadraphonic. Judging from Creative documentation, it ought be 24 bit/48 kHz, but no combinations worked. I've reverted to iTunes 4 with Quicktime 6? from my iPod CD. Creative EAX and "Sound Enhancer" in iTunes are both disabled, though I have experimented with turning them on and that hasn't helped either. I have used my 5 year old Audigy drivers as well as the latest Audigy drivers. I really don't know what to do.
It looks like the following threads concern the same topic
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=588534&tstart=15
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=588245&tstart=30
Both of which come to no resolution.
Just to be thorough, iTunes is installed on my system disk, a 120 gig Seagate hard drive, and my library is located on a RAID 1 array of Western Digital 120 gig hard drives. I have 640 mb of RAM and an Athlon XP 1700+ on an Abit KR7A-RAID.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I found new symptoms to my problem. It seems the cracking only occurs when there is hard drive activity on the hard drive where my music is located. When I move a large file to and from the hard drive, the cracking is non stop. This behavior makes sense when you recall that towards the beginning of every track there is cracking as I think this is when the data is being moved from the hard drive to the RAM.
I don't think this has to do with my music being on a Raid 1 array or the Raid controller since iTunes exhibits the same cracking when playing music off other disks, including those attached to the Raid controller and those not attached.

  • Hissing on iPod after updaing 2006-06-28

My iPod 5G 60GB has been working fine until I updated with the 2006-06-28, after which I began to hear a hiss. This is probably /the/ infamous hiss, but oddly it coincided with the software update.
I am using Shure e5c headphones, so I doubt the problem is with them. I also notice that if I reduce the volume to 0, the hiss stops with a noticeable click. Then if I increase the volume above 0, the hiss starts, again with a noticeable click.
Also, why does it seem that all posts matching the word "hiss" are unanswered and archived?

Yes -- I discovered the same sound when I updated to the 2006-06-28 software. Would this be related to the new Volume Limiter functioner?

  • Windows 7 and Speaker Hiss

Ever since I installed Windows 7 months ago on my T400, I've noticed (when docked, with external speakers) it makes a speaker hiss that is correlated to mouse movement (external wireless mouse), and particularly, scrolling with the mouse wheel.  I've heard these sounds on other computers, but I never had the issue on mine until I upgraded to Win 7.  I've muted and disabled the microphone, and I've tried rearranging the USB plugs (wireless receiver), but all to no avail.  Anyone have a cure for the hiss?

I have the exact same issue on my T400s that came preloaded with Win7.
All I can think of is some sort of grounding issue in the laptop or dock. I'm going to try putting a ground loop isolator between the dock jack and the amp/speakers, see if that helps...

  • Opening GB3 files in GB4

I have been using GarageBand 3 on my old computer (PowerBook G4 with OS 10.4).
My files contain mostly recorded instruments (no samples) with some MIDI tracks.
I just got a new computer (iMac) with MacOS 10.5 and GarageBand 4.
I am unable to open my GB3 files in GB4 without getting errors.
If i try to open the files with my new computer, GB4 gives an error saying that the GB3 files are in an unknown format. It then proceeds to open the files and gives further errors saying that a certain number (different depending on the file) of "invalid region(s) changed". Once i clear these errors, either GB4 crashes, or it opens up the main window and then gives me errors stating that certain audio regions are in 8-bit format and can not be played back.
I have not seen any other problems on line with GB4 not being able to read GB3 files. Was there some setting in my GB3 that was not correct. I can not find anything in GB3 that specifies the quality of certain audio tracks. However, since all tracks were recorded in the same manner, and i never changed any of the settings, they should all be the same, but GB4 is only complaining about certain ones.
    Any suggestions.
I am currently unable to load any of my GB3 files into GB4 and use them.
This is very distressing since i will be losing over a year's worth of work if i have to rerecord all of my files to get them onto my new computer.
    TP

Hmm, that is odd, and I don't recall hearing about problems like that from other users.
Photoshop always treats 32 bit/channel data as gamma 1.0, and always corrects for the display.
If you send me one of the files in question, I can take a look.
Photoshop CS45 Standard is only limited in 32 bit/channel in that it can't create layers or use many of the brush tools.
But Photoshop CS5 no longer has that limitation.

  • Adding presumed APPLE loops to GB3/browser

    okay
    cut me a break here.
I just downloaded about 30 Apple loops by Smart media.
They are aiffs. Some have wavs.
what are the exact intelligent steps to take to get these inside GB3 so that they are indexed and ready to be called up by typing their name? This is not as easy as you think.
they are loops for electric guitar, bass and percussion.
I have the appropriate folder in my HD. But what must i do to get them properly as per protocol to land inside the browser and be usable. Thanks for the lesson.
( I loaded them in the folders. I then dragged them onto the browser and they just cant be found )

i work on a 2 computer set at home 1pc and 1 mac...on the pc i use acid and i have thousands of loops i love and i wanted to use on gb , so i put them on a disk and added them to my itunes folder so when i click on the eye icon on the lower right corner i can axcess these loops and add them to my songs..so i suggest mabe something like that

  • Can I, should I upgrade to GB3?

Okay, iLife 'o6 is available with GB 3. I got my iMac g5 this summer and have been working with GB2. It's unlikely I will be getting an Intel-chip based Mac in the near future. What is the processing of upgrading to GB3? When you upgrade how does that affect all the work you;ve done in GB2?

What is the processing of upgrading
    to GB3?
You buy iLife '06 and install it.
When you upgrade how does that affect all the
    work you;ve done in GB2?
It shouldn't, GB2 files will open in GB3. GB3 files will not open in GB2.
Unless you're interested in Podcasting,. there's very little that's new for musicians, though if you're interested in all the iLife apps, you certainly can't beat the price.
