Histogram in LR vs Photoshop

I know that if you stretch or pull an 8-bit image too much in Photoshop, it will show sever banding (fence posting). I don't see this same behavior when watching the histograms in LR. Does it just always display a smooth histogram or is there something else going on that actually preserves more tonal information?

Lightroom is working in a linear gamma, 16 bit file (even if your original is 8 bit) so, the odds are real good that nothing you do in Lightroom will ever cause "combing" in LR's histogram. That's not to say you can't do evil to your image in Lightroom-you can-just that the odds of actually causing banding and posterization are minimal.

  • Histogram and saturation in Photoshop

    1. Photoshop histogram panel is the average of the color intensity of the selected areas and layers of color channel statistics mean?
    2. In the Photoshop histogram panel do you mean the average of the brightness of the image luminance channel?
I represent the average value of the maximum to the average of brightness from 0 to 255?
    3. To obtain the saturation current number of images should I use any method or menu or panel?
    I would appreciate a response.

  • Spot Meters and their use

    So Rene,
As you were saying in thread http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b73768/27
Please do explain your preferred method of determining contrast range so we can all learn, thanks

Ay-up. None of my exposures is ever correct, of course. Silly me for interpreting the histogram, then. Always got blocked shadows and blown highlights. Dang but I'm stupid.
To say that a quick look at a histogram is "wasting time" compared with pointing a spot meter all over the place and figuring out the differences and therefore final exposure in your head is, well, plain silly. It's a time saver compared to that.
Best to learn to use the modern tools supplied in the camera and not pretend there's a dumb film in there that can offer no feedback..... it's a darn site quicker and more accurate to gain a properly exposed picture by checking and adjusting to the histogram.
The histogram in ACR and Photoshop bears little resemblance to the thing on the LCD of my camera at the time of shooting. What possible use is that example in this case? I'd be far more impressed with a grab from the camera's LCD. Anyway, given the preponderance of mid and dark tones in that example, that histogram qualifies perfectly for a well exposed shot, so what's the problem?
Seems to me there is too much blind repeating of what others say on this Web thingumy and not enough reporting of experience gained through actual reasoned and cognitive use. In fact the histogram gives a very good idea of the proportion of highlights to shadows, the differences in range between the two, and whether your end result will have both shadow and highlight detail - or not - at a glance.
How the thing is generated is irrelevant - like all things it's the way the thing actually works in real situations
    i with user interpretation
to get properly exposed results that counts, not some theory on its inadequacies (of which I have yet to experience any).
If I left my exposures to the matrix meter alone, particularly the macro stuff and those involving dark subjects with strong backlight or bright backgrounds, I would have a bevy of underexposed photographs on my drives. Similarly, taking spot readings on a macro or moving subjects is largely impractical, if nothing else.
I cannot actually think of one bad over or underexposed shot that has happened to me using the histogram technique, and we're talking tens of thousands of shots here. So whatever the theories against, I have to say that in actual use it works, and works extremely well. I'm always happy to post samples of
    i my own work
as proof, as I have done here for years now anyway. I fail to see the reasoning in light of that as to why I should be seeking to be convinced by anyone that the histogram is not something that can be accurately and reliably worked from. Nonsense. It can. I do it all the time. You may not like my photographs, but you won't fault the exposures.

  • Spectral Analysis using Lightroom

A bit of an odd question, but I would appreciate any help.
Is it possible to use Lightroom as a spectral analysis program for standardized images?
    For example:
I have numerous standardized images of geological samples.  Some are lighter, some darker depending on the makeup of the sample.  Can I export the spectral histogram from Lightroom as a data point for the composition of each sample?  Is there any way to access the histogram/spectral data in a way that allows it to be quantified and placed into a database?
    Thanks for the help!
    -Marshall

The histogram is based on Melissa RGB which is ProPhoto RGB primaries with a gamma (TRC) of 1.0 which isn’t easily exported so I doubt this is going to be useful to you. The histogram (here or in Photoshop etc) are not based on spectral data anyway. This is probably more useful for you:

  • Levels equivalent in Lightroom

    Hi Guys,
does anybody know if ther's a Photoshop Levels equivalent in Lightroom? I really mean a Levels tool, not a curves/simil curves option, but something to set white/black point accurately like in photoshop.
    Thanks for your help!
    Cristiano

Well, Exposure, Black and Brightness do not really works the same way that the Levels in Photoshop.
The impact on the image is different....I am not able to tell you exactly how but, try it yourself.
I think what you are seeing is the difference in LR's histogram display when compared to PS's histogram display. Ssprengel pointed this out in his post:
One thing that makes this suggested procedure more difficult in LR is that the histogram in ACR is determined by the output color space you have set and the shipping indicators match what the output will be, but in LR the histogram reflects the internal working color space of LR, so something showing as not clipped in LR’s histogram might actually be clipped in the output image when you set the color space in the Export panel and there’s no way to proof this beforehand.
So the 'Level' controls in PS appear to have a different affect on the image file's histogram. As ssprengel also points out it would be nice if Adobe allowed "proofing" the image in LR with the export color space profile (i.e. sRGB).
Try exporting a RAW image file to TIFF file format, ProPhoto RGB, and 16 bit. Open the TIFF copy in both LR and PS and try the 'Levels' adjustments in PS versus LR's Exposure, Blacks, and Brightness controls. The histograms and controls should function more similar. As ssprengel said, PS’s histogram is going to provide a more accurate indication of clipping in narrower gamut color spaces compared to LR’s Melissa RGB histogram.

  • Is there a workaround for Photoshop CS6 Histogram?

I have noticed this and I am wondering if there is a more feasable workaround other than saving my work, closing the application and reopening the app.
    Here are the steps:
Open a file (any file type compatible)
    Open the histogram window
    Open the layers window
If one layer / Background unlock
    OR
Open file with multiple layers (image, mask, or adjustment)
In Layer window now deselect the background layer or all of the layers by clicking on the window below the layers (RIGHT under "Layer 0" in layer window)
The histogram changes to B&W histogram
The only way to revert to the previous Color display is to close PS CS6 and reopen it. Then you are back to the full histogram.
When editing multiple layers in files, or compositing, this is really an issue and slows down workflow.
Is there another workflow? I have attempted a couple workarounds but none have worked other than restart.
Any idea what is happening? or is anyone else running into this?
Just "Not selecting" is not an option.

Seems like that has happened for several versions.
To get back to Colors without restarting photoshop cs6, you can go to Expanded View and choose Colors from the drop-down list.

  • Photoshop CS5 building Histograms with every file change

I am working in Photoshop CS5 on a MacPro with Snow Leopard, 10.6.4. I have a file that is a little over a gigabyte open. Every time I make any changes to the file (i.e. select a different layers, grab the text tool, etc.) a menu pops up with a progress bar and says it is building the histgrams. This process happens with EVERY move. As you can imagine, this has slowed my productivity down to a crawl. Can I do anything to make it stop rebuilding the histograms at every step?

  • Histogram mean and median in Photoshop are different than in MATLAB

Hi guys. I'm currently using Photoshop CS3 on my PC and I've been tasked to do some image analysis research. I used Photoshop to analyze a pool of 100 files to find the mean and median of their (intensity/gray) histograms. (Using the im2gray function in MATLAB)
The problem is, though, that when I analyze these same files in MATLAB with the mean (mean2), median (median(I(:)) I am coming up with different numbers. Some of the means/medians in MATLAB are as high as 15 (scale: uint8 (1-256)) away from the results in Photoshop.
I am trying to find the source of this problem, but I cannot put my finger on it. I'm thinking photoshop and MATLAB just process images differently or something but I would like to know the root cause of the problem.
If anyone can help here I'd appreciate it much!

I don't use Mathlab so this is just a shot in the dark but you might want to try going to the Edit menu and choosing Assign Profile. In the dialog choose 'Don't Color Manage This Document'.
I would think that would sent out values to Mathlab not adjusted to any profile. If that doesn't work you might try the sGray profile or one of the Gamma.
As I understand it Dot Gain is how the ink spreads on paper when screened and printed. It has to do with how much ink is layed down by the press and the paper stock.

  • Photoshop Extended Histogram Export

I am looking at purchasing a copy of Photoshop Extended for use at work.  Does the measurement export include the ability to export histogram data for a selection in L*a*b* color space?  I have had good results with color testing for quality control using my personal copy of CS4 and am looking for a way to allow easier integration with Excel for evaluating data against manufacturing product standards.
I would also consider learning more about scripting if that is a better approach.
    Thanks!
    -David

I should have added that the histogram is exported as a CSV text file, which is easily digested by Excel and other spreadsheet programs.

  • Photoshop CS6 Extended 64bit - histogram clipping issue

CS6 clips the histogram (black and white point)  when reducing a 16bit TIFF file from 7000px wide to let's say 1280px wide. CS5 does not using the same steps. Windows 7 ultimate 64bit - I7 -24GB RAM.
Anybody has had this issue? Is there a setting in CS6 to modify the reduction algo (binning, bicubic or other) that CS5 uses?

The CS6 factory-default of Bicubic Automatic results in Bicubic Sharper and Bicubic Smoother when reducing and increasing pixel count, respectively. Sharper tends to create hideous oversharpening halos (hence the observed clipping in the histogram) but, hey, Adobe says that's best [rolls eyes].
Change the default resampling to plain Bicubic in Preferences > General.
Note that CS6's Transform mode has an independant resampling control in Options bar when a raster layer is targeted. The default for that is Bicubic Automatic so you probably want to set it to plain Bicubic, too.

  • How does Photoshop Elements set the histogram pixel count (Y value)?

I use histograms a lot to evaluate the quality of an image. But I've noticed that some histograms have "flat peaks". I don't think that indicates real clipping is taking place, but it does raise the question as to what the maximum count is set to. I can find nothing that discusses this issue.

    Hallo,
vielen Dank für die kurze Antwort. Eigentlich schade, für so ein mächtiges Programm...

  • Photoshop Histogram Question (Pixel Count)?

When using the histogram, why is it that when viewing selected lair, it shows 6000 pixels, but when using control + click layer (selecting all the pixels on the layer) it shows 2400?
Could it be that ctrl+click doesn't count transparent pixels in the count?

Ctrl+Clicking on a Layer content is the layers palette should load that layers transparency as a  selection and cam be any shape which will be smaller or equal to canvas size.. Targeting a layer you should get the layer the bounds which is rectangular and can be any size layers can be larger then and not even positioned over the document canvas area.
Only pixel in either have color

  • Photoshop color histogram is missing.

This program has been in use for several years with no problems.  When booting up the program today, the color histogram is missing. several reboot attempts were unsuccessful.  The other presentations on the screen were normal.  What can be done to restore the color histogram?

Go to Window in the options panel and click colour from the drop
    down menu....

  • I can no longer use 3D commands in Photoshop CS6 Extended

I have Photoshop CS6 Extended (Ver 13.0.1x64). My desktop is Windows 7 64 Home premium; and Video card is: AMD Radeon HD 5570. The drivers and operating system is updated.
I have been using simple 3D functions like "New 3D extrusion from..." from time to time without any problems until recently. For unknown reasons now when I try to invoke any 3D command, I get the following message: " Could not complete the "New 3D extrusion from selected layer command because of a program error." This ,message gets repeated for any 3D command.
I checked out 3D functionality in Photoshop CS6 32 bit; and Photoshop CS5.5 Extended. Same problem. However, I can access and use all 3D functions in Illustrator CS6. Clearly, therefore, the video card is not the problem. It looks like one of the recent software updates from Adobe must have caused this problem.
Reproduced below  are details of my system:

  • Photoshop 12.0.4 is out (Tue 3 May) - what's new?

Looks like Photoshop 12.0.4 was released this morning, somewhere around 2am Eastern.
Are there full release notes somewhere? (Like InDesign has here for 7.0.4.)
The above URL notes some changes:
The 12.0.4 update enables specially designed apps on tablets,
smartphones, and PCs to communicate with and control interaction with
Photoshop CS5 (Located in the File menu: Remote Connections). Now you
can be creative on other devices and instantly incorporate what you
create into Photoshop. You must install the 12.0.4 update to activate a
remote connection between Photoshop CS5 and any apps that Adobe or
third-party developers create to interact with Photoshop. For example,
Photoshop CS5 must be updated to 12.0.4 to interact with three new iPad
apps that Adobe has designed to work with it - Adobe Nav, Adobe Color
Lava, and Adobe Eazel. Available on the App Store.
The 12.0.4 update also fixes liquify performance, type related
crashes, and other top customer issues. The most significant fixes
    include the following:
    • A number of potential security vulnerabilities have been addressed.
    • Liquify save mesh now works as expected.
    • An issue with Sharpen crashing has been fixed.
    • An issue with Quick Selection crashing has been fixed.
    • The Orphea Studio File Info issue has been resolved.
One might also infer that bugs fixed in the Windows-only 12.0.3 update that are cross-platform are also fixed:
The most significant fixes in the Photoshop 12.0.3 update include the following:
-- Windows XP tool tip font issue introduced by 12.0.2
-- A number of potential security vulnerabilities have been addressed
-- Top type and font crashers found in the field have been addressed
-- A number of performance issues have been addressed
-- Crash opening 3D layers has been addressed
-- Color Engine crash has been resolved
-- Intermittent file format issues addressed
    -- Shift scrolling bug fixed
    -- Sharpen crasher fixed
-- Marching ants not seen at certain zoom levels fixed
-- Metadata focus distance issue addressed
-- File info bug addressed for Orphea Studio jpg's
    -- TWAIN crashers fixed
    -- Brush cursor bug fixed
-- Histogram progress bar issue fixed
    -- Droplet issues addressed
    Thanks!

Something has changed between 12.0.2 and and 12.0.4 with the pixel grid overlay at zooms > 500%.
The pixel grid in 12.0.4 now uses 2 pixels "averaged." 12.0.2 used alternating rows and columns.
At lower zooms (501% — 1000%) it looks better to me. At 1600% it looks fuzzier, but probably a bit more precise than the alternating method. Keep in mind this is just for screen drawing purposes. It doesn't affect the image.
    fyi.
