Histogram of Gaussian White Noise with NI5112

I am digitizing some random gaussian white noise with a NI-PXI 5112. The problem is that even with very high number of samples (1 Mega sample) the distribution presents a lot of periodic pikes when making a voltage histogram (either with built in function or by postprocessing data with Mathematica).
I am using two synchronized digitizers and they both have the same behaviour (pikes symmetric around 0 and with periodicity), but give different response from one another.
I already tried to filter the data, change the vertical range of both aquisition and generation devices, but the pikes always appear at the same relative values, and with the same relative number of counts.
How can I overcome this problem ?

Could you post a screenshot of your histogram? How many bins do you have in your histogram?
Remember that the 5112 is an 8-bit boards so you only have (in the order of) 256 possible values so unless you 'hit' the exact values your bins will have un-equal weights. This could result in the periodic behavior you are observing.

  • How Do I generate a Filtered gaussian white noise

Can someone please help me on how I can generate filtered gaussian white noise in LabVIEW.

Actually in the moment you specify a sample rate for your Gaussian white noise data you apply a filter equal to F_sample/2. But anyway If you want to have 10 seconds with white noise sampled with Y Hz in sample frequency. Then you create an white noise array, with 10xY samples or elements. Then you apply your filter

  • Gaussian White Noise - Seed

    Hi everybody,
I want to call the "Gaussian White Noise.vi" several times (lets say, in a loop) and thereby, I want to fully control the state of the random generator which is used in the VI.
I think, that the "seed" input somehow determines the state of internal random generator (which is unfortunately "hidden" in a DLL).
So, what I would like to have is an output parameter that returns the last state of the random generator .
The idea is, that I can call the VI several times setting the "seed" input parameter equal to the state of the random generator of the last call. By this, I could get a reproducible stream of random numbers by simply setting the "seed" input parameter of the first call to a user defined value.
I hope, I was able to explain my wishes.
    Thanks for all replies
    Stefan

    Hi Kevin,
thanks for your good idea. This works fine.
If a guy from NI reads this message: It would be helpful anyway, if the state of the random generator would be returned by the VI "Gaussian White Noise.vi". Think about an extensive simulation with a many iterations and after a certain time, an interesting result occurs. If one wants to reinvestigate this interesting result, one has the re-run the complete simulation until one gets to the time instant where the result occurs. If the state of the random generator would be availabe, one could save this state in each iteration and re-running the complete simulation would not be neccessary anymore. One would reload the state of the generator for the interesting iteration and would have to re-run a singe iteration. Would be much faster.
    Thanks again

  • Premiere 7.2.1 white noise with Audition import

I'd edited an audio clip in Audition and was reconnecting the clip in Premiere. I played the clip in my timeline and it blaseted my ears at full volume with white noise. I tested the symptoms a couple more times before the clip refreshed and the sound went back to normal. Took about 30 seconds from when I reconnected to when the issue resolved itself.
I think I'm going to go make some coffee while my ears recover. And in the meantime, I'm going to be more careful when playing new things in my timeline. But at this rate, I'm going to need hearing aids before I turn 40.

I've been experiencing the same issue mattslote has described.  Like OP, the clip eventually "refreshes" and plays normal instead of as white noise.  For me, the "refreshing" took several minutes to occur.
My process was clicking on a clip in the timeline, choosing "Edit clip in Adobe Audition," saving the edited file in Audition as *file name* Audio Extracted.wav, and playing back the clip now with replaced audio in the timeline.  I experienced the same issue last night, of the replaced audio playing back as white noise.  However, last night the clip did not ever "refresh" after a period of twenty minutes or so (during which I did clear the cache), so I deleted the new audio from the timeline. I did not delete the edited audio .wav flie, which played normal in an audio player program.

  • White noise with Digi002Rack. Why?

When I try to record audio with Logic pro 8 and my Digi002Rack, I just have white noise. It worked for about two weeks and then... Has it something to do with Authorisation? I had no internet on that computer (MacPro) so I waited, but now it's done and still doesn't work. So if someone has the answer... Thanks.

I experience the same with an MBox.
    Solution: Restart the computer.
I suspect Digi hardware doesn´t allow you to set your computer to sleep.

  • Adding white noise to signal

    Hi,
I am trying to figure out how to allow a user to add white noise to a signal, the idea is that the user would enter the noise ratio in db which I would then apply to a signal measurement before displaying it. I looked at the add gaussian white noise vis in LV but I am not sure how to go from the noise ratio that the user enters to the seed and standard deviation inputs for the function.
I tried to look online but all I found was ways to add noise based on amplitude, is there a way to convert from the db ratio to amplitude given that I do not know the amplitude information of my original signal before hand since it is being sampled in real-time.  Any information about this would be greatly appriciated i realize that I might be mis-understanding the way signal/noise processing really works.
    Thank you,

dB is a dimensionless relative measure, you need a reference intensity in order to calculate it
    Often times in electronics you see things referenced to 1 mW,  called dBm = 10 log10(P / 1mW), so P = 10^(dBm/20)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DBm
For sound dB SPL = 20 log10(I / I0), I (intensity) is usually expressed  Pascalls  I0 is nearly always referencec to human hearing threshold, which is 2 * 10^-5 Pa.   Multiply by your mic gain to convert to from pressure to volts.

  • White noise, sort of packet loss when talking with...

    Hi,
For some unknown reason when I talk with one specific person the call doesn't exactly drop out it sort of cuts the audio and gives me white noise (sort of like when you get packet loss when transferring files or gaming), I have 0 idea why it does it. Does it the reverse as well, but only for me and this person. Everyone else thats in the call doesn't get effected and its frustrating me.

When in a call goto call > Technical info. This will show you various info about the call connection (and a lot of useless info aswell). Amongst the info is packet loss, and relays (if relays = more than 0 you are not directly connected).

  • New 21 inch iMac with mic white noise

Internal mic creates white noise when speaking on Face Time, Skype, or iChat.  It is resolved if I plug in my iPhone headphones.  I tried a PRAM reset and moving the computer location in case there was a problem with grounding, but to no avail.
Any suggestions or is it just a bad mic?  I ordered the computer day 1 it was released this last month, maybe that was the problem.

Go to /Applications/Utilities and run Audio MIDI Setup. Toggle outputs and then try again.
If still no joy, tote that new bad boy into the nearest Apple Store and have them offer and opinion - if that's not an option, get on the phone to Apple...let them FT w/you and see what they think.
    Good luck in any case.

  • SBH50 issue with streaming audio (sec white noise)

After some test, with 2 device, and after having resetted the SBH50 as suggested in another thread related to stutter audio, i realize that the issue comes when "multipoint" in sbh50 is activated.
    i did some exercise:
    - no multipoint activated (only one device: sgs3) music streaming from sgs to sbh works perfectly.
    - multipoint acivated
second device not connected: as soon as multipoint is activated sbh starts being disturbed by "white noise" for 1 second and it happens really often, more times during a single song
second device connected: same situation as point 1
i solved not using multipoint.. that is not the right solution
hope for a solution, i got still 20 days before time limit for give it back with no fee, and i wonder to understand if i should buy a BT clip that cost less considering at this point the added values is the little scrren (nice) and nfc (nice but.. after the first pairing i do not need it anymore)

  • I have some dts cd's that I want to import into itunes on a windows pc and then play back on my apple tv 3 (i think its 3, about 9 months old) to listen to through my onkyo amp via hdmi as dts, when I play back I just get white noise.

I have some dts cd's that I want to import into itunes on a windows pc and then play back on my apple tv 3 (i think its 3, about 9 months old) to listen to through my onkyo amp via hdmi as dts, when I play back I just get white noise. I have seen lots of old posts which go on about converting files but am wondering wherher at the current time with the latest versions of itunes and apple tv whether this should by now be a virtual play out of the box solution.
I have tried connecting my atv to the amp by optical cable but that didnt produce anything better and am assuming that a hdmi cable should be able to reproduce everything an optical cable does.
Is this something I should be able to achieve without having to recode the files?
Tracks are imported to itunes as apple lossless, have tried setting the atv audio settings to auto and 16 bit, neither works yet I was told some time ago by an apple rep that the atv shoud be able to handle any type of audio as it just passes it to the amp to decode. I am not stupid but not that technical when it comes to audio and bitrates etc so any explaination would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any help

Willy, the procdedure you describe works perfectly for AppleTV G1. In fact, I frequently play DTS music discs ripped to my iTunes library as Apple Lossless (ALAC) and synched to the ATV. What happens is that, as far as iTunes and the ATV are concerned, a conventional stereo 16/44 audio file is being played; however my reciever detects the DTS data stream, and instead of outputting static, it decodes the 5.1 channels correctly. This process parallels the way DTS discs were designed to be played back: a conventional CD player is connceted, via digital out, to a DTS-aware reciever/pre-amp and the two channels of static are recognized as 6 channels of DTS-encoded audio.
However this process will only work if the player (CD, ATV, PC, etc.) sends a "bit-perfect" 16 bit/44.1 khz data stream to the decoding device. In the case of ATV G2 and G3, as has been discussed elsewhere, the unit resmaples all audio - including 16/44 PCM (Redbook CD)  - to 16/48. While this is not a big deal for conventional audio CDs, MP3s, and AAC files, it mangles the fragile DTS datastream and renders it undecodable. The resulting static that you hear is just like the static you would hear if you played a DTS CD on a non-DTS capable system.
Sadly, I'm not aware of any easy way around this. You could use a program like Foobar (and the DTS plugin) to convert your DTS CDs to 6-ch .wav or .flac file. From there you could transcode the file to AC-3 and then mux it into a video container that ATV supports. You may need add a dummy video track, for iTunes/AppleTV to be ok with the file, though I'm not sure. This may be a lot of work.
Sorry for the bad news. I wish that the iTunes/ATV ecosystem had better multi-channel audio support.

  • MBP 17" report, occasional white noise from right speaker

My 2.16Ghz MBP with 100GB 7200rpm drive and 1GB memory arrived a few days ago. Since then I have been installing software, running apps, and generally putting it through it's paces. I have also added a 1GB stick from Crucial. On the whole the MBP has been great, except for a few (hopefully minor) problems:
    1. It gets quite warm on the left palmrest, and gets uncomfortably hot between the keyboard and the screen. This is just during casual use, web surfing, downloading updates etc. The case temperature is about the same as my old 667MHz TiBook after it had been at 100% CPU for several hours (encoding video). I dread to think how hot the MBP will get doing something demanding.
    2. When closed the screen appears to be slightly bent, the gap at the two front corners is about 1mm wider than the gap at the latches.
    3. I have started to get hard crashes during the boot up sequence. Specifically after the grey apple I get the greyed-out multi-language reboot message and have to reboot. If I continue trying to reboot it eventually manages to get past the grey apple and boot up normally (usually this takes 2 or 3 attempts). I suspect this is due to something I've installed, possibly some Canon software for my MP750 printer.
    4. I have now heard a white noise/static sound coming from the right speaker on 5 occasions. Three of those occasions were while booting (one of them was when I first turned the MBP on! Not a good sign). The computer boots normally, but with this strange noise! The other two times where when I was launching apps. On each occasion the noise lasted about 3-5 seconds before stopping. It's more of a hissing noise, not a mooing or a whining noise. It sounds exactly like the speakers on a vinyl record player when the needle is in between songs.
Obviously all of the issue are annoying. However I'm only REALLY concerned about item 4. Item 1 was kind of expected after doing some pre-purchase research. Item 2 is annoying in a £1800 laptop, but I can reluctantly live with it. Item 3 is frustrating but I'm sure I can 'cure' it by removing software (it only started happening after a day or two of fairly heavy use). Item 4, on the other hand, is intolerable
Anyone have any suggestions? Advice appreciated. The nearest Apple store is about an hour away, so advice other than "take it to a Mac 'genius'" would be appreciated.
    17" MacBook Pro 2.16GHz Mac OS X (10.4.6) 2GB RAM

Well, that was 15 minutes of life wasted typing out the above post that I'll never get back
I was hoping for some sort of 'expert' advice from all the users here with thousands of posts. Evidently not.
Anyway ... I have (kind of) fixed the problem myself. Resetting the power management unit almost completely solves the static noise problem. I say almost, because since resetting the PMU (about 2 weeks ago now) I have heard the static noise ONCE. This is compared to hearing it around 3 or 4 times a day prior to the PMU reset.
This at least makes me slightly more confident that this is a software/firmware glitch, rather than a hardware fault.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • HT4623 I downloaded ios7 and initially it was working fine. Now it is flashing from my home screen to the white screen with the black apple every 3-5 seconds. It's so annoying and I can't make it stop! I tried shutting down all the way - nope! HELP!

I downloaded ios7 on my iphone 5 yesterday. All day it worked fine, then last evening it started blinking from the white screen with the black apple to my home screen. Each screen only stays up for 3-5 seconds then switches back. I have tried shutting down and it is still happening! Does anyone know how to fix this issue without having to go into the store?

Your power adapter is OK. If the only place it will not work is in your home, your house wiring and / or the appliances connected to it are likely to be the reason your Mac will not charge.
    From Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters:
    Identify line noise issues.
Unplug the power adapter from the wall, let it sit for 60 seconds, then plug the adapter back in.
If the adapter works after this 60-second "rest", you most likely have a line noise issue with your power source. You should reset the adapter periodically by repeating this moment of rest. This issue occurs when the AC adapter's "over voltage protection" feature senses ground noise and then turns off the adapter.
Some possible sources of line noise include lights with ballasts, refrigerators, or mini-refrigerators that are on the same electrical circuit as your computer. This behavior may not occur if you plug the power adapter into an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) or plug it into a different circuit.
Unless the adapter continues to exhibit this behavior on a known good outlet, it does not need to be replaced.
Household wiring problems are very common. They can also be very dangerous. Fortunately most problems can be easily fixed by a qualified electrician.

  • Got a iMac upon start up it has white screen with apple logo and loading wheel spinning forever under it, does anybody know how to fix this?

PLEASE HELP!!!!!! I've tried several of the Start up shortcuts , it wont even start up in Safe Mode . My fiance' is crushed she is a writer and EVERYTHING SHE HAS WORKED ON is somewhere on that hard drive. Any thoughts, i'm open to any and all LOGICAL responses, thank you very much for ya'lls time ........Its just heartbreaking to see my iMac in this vegistated coma,The whole reason i bought a mac was cause I love them I have Apple EVERYTHING, so once again please help.

Try this: Switch off your iMac wait 10-15 seconds hold down the Option Key (alt) key then press the power botton but keep the option key down. This should show all the available options to boot from. I trust you have a full backup, Good luck.

  • White Noise showing up in images after PDF Creation

I am currently running into an issue making PDFs from InDesign CS4. Lately, our company has been getting some rather large jobs in to print and that's when this all started.
The current job is 190 pages plus cover that will be perfect bound. The client, nor I can make one large PDF from this job so we have to break it up into sections. Usually each of the PDF sections has around 20-50 pages per.
Now the issue we're running into is that on some of the pages, an image will end up with a bar or lines in it that looks like white noise. Like the image information was lost for a short period of time during the PDF creation from InDesign.
Here are two pictures of pages from separate jobs and a close up on what's going on. **Second image was from a 32 page plus cover document we have already printed.
Now in order for me to fix this issue is to just make a single page PDF of the effected pages in the document. I just wish I knew what was causing this issue so I know how to avoid it in the future. So far four jobs have been affected like this; two 32 page + cover jobs, a 64 page + cover job, and is job.
We use a Rampage Workflow system here. My PDF settings in InDesign CS4 has all compression turned off, no profiles or color conversion turned on. I keep compression turned off because it seems sometimes, vector art done in Illustrator does not seem to come out looking well when RIP'd in Rampage.
My main computer is a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 4 BG of memory running Mac OS X 10.5.8.
My current version of InDesign CS4 is 6.0.3.  If anyone has run into this problem or if anyone has any helpful hints for me, I could really use them please. If you need more information from me, I'll be happy to answer any questions.
    Thanks for all the help!

That one has come up every now and then and has always been hardware as far as I know....  bad ram, bad cable, bad drive, bad network maybe even bad video card (?).
I see that the lines in the rotated pic are parallel with that pic, so maybe look at the machine where that pic was made and placed first, this is not definite, but you can get corruption in tiffs on machines with hardware errors and they may not be visible every time you open the file.
Although probably a bigger clue is the fact that doing singles is working better, that would make me change the ram completely, suspecting a bad module.  Also, unplug peripheral devices and see if that has any bearing.
