Histogram on d300 vs histogram in LIghtroom 2.3

what defaults or pre-processing steps occur when I import images into lightroom? my challenge is when I compare histograms from the camera to lightroom they are different. The settings inlightroom are all zeroed,
in the d300 sharp is 4, sat=0, hue=o, contrast=act d-light, brightness=act. d-light. I'm just not sure how or why the lightroom (windows format) makes adjustments and things are different.
THanks

>we can trust the histogram in our camera
Actually you can't if you shoot RAW. The histogram in the camera has very little to do with the actual RAW data. The camera might have a stop of overhead for example over where the histogram says you're blown out. Also, the white balance adjustment might make your image appear blown out, while it isn't in the actual RAW data.
About the histogram on your camera: It is the histogram of your jpeg, which is usually in sRGB space, but can be adobeRGB if you select that. This means that the histogram's x-axis is modified by the tone curve of that space. In Lightroom, the histogram is in prophotoRGB with an sRGB tone curve (confusing indeed). Colors that are blown out in sRGB are often just fine in prophotoRGB.
Lastly, check out the camera-matching profiles that are automatically installed in Lightroom 2.2 and up.
They allow you to get pretty close to the in-camera rendering in Lightroom. Wonderful in my opinion.

  • Nikon D300 Raw Images and Lightroom 1.4.1

My updated 1.4.1 Lightroom and 4.4.1 Camera Raw are not reading the raw images from my new Nikon D300. I have read several strings of conversation from other folks who are having this problem, and from what I am reading, my 1.4.1 Lightroom should be recognizing them, but it's not. Any help would be MOST appreciated.

Before you even answered I transferred the files from my camera card to my hard drive, and presto bingo, they are now importing beautifully into lightroom. THANK YOU LEE JAY!!!!! Frank Leonard - [email protected]

  • Camera histogram vs LR histogram

I generally adjust dslr expose using the histogram on the camera (doesn't matter what kind), so that there are no or minimal blinkies.
Since LR3, I've noticed that I have a third to a half stop of exposure remaining to the right of the LR histogram.
Anyone else notice this, and if so, what are you doing about it?

This is standard.  The histogram on the back of the camera is based on the JPEG preview the camera generates from the RAW file.  The histogram in Lightroom, if you're shooting RAW, is based on the RAW file itself, and thus you're going to have some more headroom.
If you want it to be closer, adjust the JPEG settings in-camera to be as flat (low-contrast) as possible, and you may get a smidge more, but still, this is SOP and LR is behaving correctly.

  • Lightroom 4.1 - I Cannot import Nikon D300s video / movie files into catalogue - Can you?

    Hi,
I can import all of my movie files produced by other cameras into my Lightroom 4.1 catalogue, I have the most recent version of Quicktime installed and obviously as I can import other camera model movies it proves that the basic Lightroom services and processes are working fine.
When I try to import the movie, first on the import module it says 'unable to create preview' and then it states, 'this movie file contains no video frames'.
I had gone back to Lightroom 3.5, but have since realised this version doesn't publish my movie files to flickr if they are >30Mb due to the way the Lightroom 3 Publishing module craps out on memory usage.
I know the D300s records movies using the J-MPEG codec, but I'm not sure if this is a problem with the codecs installed on my machine or whether Lightroom does not support this codec?
Before I waste another few days on trying to resolve the D300s import issue, can anybody else preview and import their Nikon D300s video files into Lightroom 4 or 4.1?
    Thanks,

  • Spectral Analysis using Lightroom

A bit of an odd question, but I would appreciate any help.
Is it possible to use Lightroom as a spectral analysis program for standardized images?
    For example:
I have numerous standardized images of geological samples.  Some are lighter, some darker depending on the makeup of the sample.  Can I export the spectral histogram from Lightroom as a data point for the composition of each sample?  Is there any way to access the histogram/spectral data in a way that allows it to be quantified and placed into a database?
    Thanks for the help!
    -Marshall

The histogram is based on Melissa RGB which is ProPhoto RGB primaries with a gamma (TRC) of 1.0 which isn’t easily exported so I doubt this is going to be useful to you. The histogram (here or in Photoshop etc) are not based on spectral data anyway. This is probably more useful for you:

  • Lightroom Color Space Problem.

    Hello,
I am processing my photos in Lightrrom. The histogram in Lightroom looks ok without any clipping, but when i export them to AdobeRGB or sRGB (for web) the photos have clipped shadows or highlights or both. I belive that the problem is that the histogram in lightroom reflect the data of the photo in ProPhoto RGB, and when you export to a narrow color space the clipping happens.
Is there any way to fix this? I will always have clipping if i export to AdobeRGB or sRGB? What do you do to not have this problem?
Beside of the clipping problem. The diferece between the histogram in the develop module in Lightroom and the histogram of the exported photo in AdobeRGB or sRGB makes that you don't know what the exported photo will look like, is like working blind. I don't know about you guys, but for me the is a big problem. Well, maybe if you work all in ProPhoto RGB this is a little issue.
I would appreciate a lot any help or comment that you could give me.
    Thanks, :)
    Marcelo.

Another thing I sometimes do is to save the development settings (save metadata in metadata menu) to file in LR, and then open the RAW in Camera RAW. In camera RAW the histogram reflects the color space you set, so you can optimize the development settings there. Then I close Camera Raw, which updates the xmp file (or the stuff written into the dng) and in LR do read metadata from file, which will apply the changed settings. This does the trick typically.

  • Levels equivalent in Lightroom

    Hi Guys,
does anybody know if ther's a Photoshop Levels equivalent in Lightroom? I really mean a Levels tool, not a curves/simil curves option, but something to set white/black point accurately like in photoshop.
    Thanks for your help!
    Cristiano

Well, Exposure, Black and Brightness do not really works the same way that the Levels in Photoshop.
The impact on the image is different....I am not able to tell you exactly how but, try it yourself.
I think what you are seeing is the difference in LR's histogram display when compared to PS's histogram display. Ssprengel pointed this out in his post:
One thing that makes this suggested procedure more difficult in LR is that the histogram in ACR is determined by the output color space you have set and the shipping indicators match what the output will be, but in LR the histogram reflects the internal working color space of LR, so something showing as not clipped in LR’s histogram might actually be clipped in the output image when you set the color space in the Export panel and there’s no way to proof this beforehand.
So the 'Level' controls in PS appear to have a different affect on the image file's histogram. As ssprengel also points out it would be nice if Adobe allowed "proofing" the image in LR with the export color space profile (i.e. sRGB).
Try exporting a RAW image file to TIFF file format, ProPhoto RGB, and 16 bit. Open the TIFF copy in both LR and PS and try the 'Levels' adjustments in PS versus LR's Exposure, Blacks, and Brightness controls. The histograms and controls should function more similar. As ssprengel said, PS’s histogram is going to provide a more accurate indication of clipping in narrower gamut color spaces compared to LR’s Melissa RGB histogram.

  • Exported Jpeg's when sent to photo lab print too dark

I have had consistent results with exported jpeg images that look fine on my monitor (as raw files)and show in the histogram in lightroom 2.5 as the highlights just starting to clip as printing too dark when sent to a photo lab in SRGB.  Is this a fault of my monitor?  I have calibrated the monitor, a Dell S2409W, using charts on the website at http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1A.html but this still happens. Will darkening the Monitor help or will the images still clip at the same point?  I have been able to send a second image with the exposure and or brightness boosted a bit and they print brighter, but this is a pain.  What is the best way to correct this so that I can see the same image as I get back from the lab?

    hello henrykipson,
you said that you want starting an professional laboratory business,i can talking about this because i had a laboratory until some years ago .i hope that you made some artistic study,so it's more easy for you to learn this topic.you must study,an pass an examination  for take an artigianal licence that allow you to open this activity ,the licence given you the opportunity to work either for sale photografic material either to shoot and developing, one time that you had pass this examination you must gone to the police autority and inform these of your business (is under police control.because you work with chemical material, and also because you had a reservate people information, and they must given you their assent.)after all you can start to buy a good developer and print machine beyond to have a dark room.for manual print.you must decided if do you want work in black and white or color. You can do both but is better to specialize by one of them ,like you want.
Remember from the digital events many people print his image at home, you must deciding maybe is better to work with a professional photographer, that can given you more work.itsn't easy.you must have a good preparation because ,they are more exigent. The good results depend also from the quality of your works.a good machine, good chemical product, good upkeep,of your laboratory.(in italy this is the procedure,i think also in other country, because is a ticklish question licence.)I hope that this my little explanation are useful to you.Good luck .

  • Color clipping before highlights are clipping

I have pretty strange behaviour on concert pictures I import from my D700. Usually I import with camera profile Vivid V4. The concert pictures have strong reds due to the flood lights.
My camera histogram shows a slight clipping of the reds (even though I underexpose 1-2 stops).
After import of the RAW files using Vivid V4, the histogram in Lightroom looks strange, and also the controls behave strange:
    - a strong red spike in the histogram at about 1/5th away from clipping level
(the picture in Lr shows blown out parts in red)
    - hovering over different areas of the pictures and checking the percentage indicator underneath the histogram
shows significant areas of 100 % red, even though there are still tonal differences in those areas
    - moving exposure to the right: the histogram content left to the spike is shifting as expected, but the spike is growing and staying at 1/5th, nothing is appearing to the right of the spike
(more areas in the picture are blown out)
    - no other basic control can flatten out the spike, even not the highlight slider
    - only the saturation control has some influence, and also with the tone curve I can fill the histogram,
but picture is still looking blown out
The situation improves a lot by using Camera Neutral V4, the red is more spread out in the histogram,
also beyond the 1/5th the highlight clipping level. Significant areas in the picture are still at 100 % but less blown out.
Basic controls are behaving more normal, and it is possible to fill the histogram by increasing the exposure or other controls.
The question is.. is this unintended behaviour of Lightroom, or is is as good as we can get it with the strong red colors,
and is it better not to use Vivid V4 in these cases?

This has been an ongoing question of mine too for a long time now. Some people tried to explain, but either they didn't really understand it, or I was too dense to get what they were saying.
In any case, if you click 'Soft Proof', you can usually see that there are tones present that are *not* being displayed in the Lightroom histogram, but *are* affecting the controls.
    more info here:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lightroom_4_the_highlight_wall
PS - I think the reason it's worse with vivid is:
    * it's contrastier (brighter highlights)
    * it's more saturated.
    Some work-arounds:
    * reduce saturation, and increase vibrance instead.
    * use the RGB curves.
    * change the hue and/or saturation of the red channel (or whichever channel(s) offending most) (in camera calibration section) - you may have to finesse some other coloring to compensate...
    * use split toning to add anti-color to the top end, then change the white balance and/or desaturate to compensate.
    * Edit photo color using DPE (beware it does not allow control of color based on luminosity - maybe v1.0?).
PS - I wish one could control color based on luminosity in Lightroom too (maybe better still to be able to define an auto-mask based at least partly on luminosity, then you could tweak other things as well...).

  • Display is wrong on the shadow side after updating to OSX 10.9.2

After updating to OSX 10.9.2, Aperture 3.5.1 begins to display wierd shadows.  Even if the value of the black point is set to 0, the black appear to be blotching although there is no clipping appearing in the histogram. Lightroom and other 3rd party programs appear normal.

I shoot raw and I use a Canon 5D Mark II. Here is a grab from one of the pics.  Note the muddy color of the green in the shadow and the black and the surrounding.  This is not so when opened in lightroom or any other raw processing software.

  • Speed up saving of layered files?

In CS4, on a first generation quad core Mac Pro with 12 gigs of RAM and scratch and all image files on a fast two disk RAID 0, I find that saving psd files with layers is extremely slow.
If I open a 16 bit 12 megapixel D300 raw image from Lightroom into Photoshop, and immediately save it, it takes just 1 to 2 seconds to save the 60 megabyte file. But if I duplicate the background layer and save again, it takes about 15 seconds. If I duplicate two more times so there are four layers, it takes over 30 seconds to re-save the now 286 megabyte file.
Why does this take so long? Are these numbers normal? Is there anything that can be done to speed this up? I can duplicate the file in Finder in less than 4 seconds, so I assume this has nothing to do with disk bandwidth.
And why does saving files have to be modal? If I could start the save then switch over and start working on a different image I really wouldn't care how long it took.

If you save with maximum compatibility, we have to composite (flatten) the document and save that PLUS the layer contents. That takes extra time.
Yes, without major changes, saving has to be modal (due to disk access, error handling, etc.).
Opening a file is decompressing - easy.
Saving a file is compressing - SLOW.

  • Dimensions change

I have several photos taken in portrait mode, and after importing them into Lightroom the metadata dimensions changed them to landscape dimensions, i.e., 4288 X 2848 instead of 2848 X 4288. They show up correctly in portrait mode in Library, but change to landscape mode in develop. The subject is still in a vertical position but is now distorted by being stretched sideways. Several pictures taken in this same shoot have this problem whereas several others taken  vertically in the same shoot do not have this problem.
I use a Nikon D300 and am using Lightroom version 2.5. The pictures were all shot in jpeg fine.
Is there a way of correcting this? I think that if I could edit the dimensions in the  metadata back to 2848 X 4288, then it would be all right, but that is only a guess. Also, is there a way of preventing this happening again?
Thanking anyone for any help, Frida.

One thing I can think might cause this is that some photos have in camera rotation applied, and some don't. A possible fix might be to select them all and tell LR to build previews.

Trying to find it using the "find missing photos" in the library menu does nothing.

  • Lightroom 4.3 histogram does not appear

I am a longtime Lightroom user, now with 4.3. I import my files from my D800e with a card reader as dng's. Occasionally, when I click on an image in the grid view, the histogram does not show, regardless of how long I wait. If I bring it into loupe view, it also does not show. If I put it into develop mode, the histogram is always there. This seems to happen randomly. I find this frustrating behavior. Has anyone else experienced this? It has persisted through a number of upgrades.

I had this problem in LR 3 when synchronizing, but only when I chose the main folder. No problem when choosing individual folders. I eventually overcame the problem by clicking the show files before import. I then worked in LR 4 Beta, importing several directories and had no problems. However, on the release of LR 4, I upgraded the existing catalog - and the problem resurfaced. So I assume a problem with the catalog, or just some folders within the main directory. Short of rebuilding the whole catalog, I have no other solution

  • Lightroom doesn't show Histogram, Exit Properly, or load previews

I've installed both Lightroom CC and Lightroom 6 on multiple machines.  I'm experiencing the following difficulties with both.
    1.  When I exit from Lightroom CC or Lightroom 6 (Yosemite 10.10.3), the program appears to exit, but doesn't actually close.  I have to use either the activity manager or CTRL-ALT-ESC to "Force Quit".
    2.  While in Lightroom CC, histograms do not appear in the histogram box either in the library or develop module.
    3.  On many images, the preview will not load in a reasonable length of time (5 minutes).
My hardwares are:  1)  a Trash Can Mac Pro (2014) with 32 GB RAM, 6 cores, 3.5 GHz per core, and the 1 TB flash drive (0.7 TB free).
    2) 2011 (Late) Mac Pro, 3.4 GHz Quad Core, 32 GB RAM, 2 TB Hard drive (1.8 TB free).
I've tried uninstalling, followed by reinstalling both programs, I've redownloaded the Lightroom 6 and Lightroom CC programs directly from Adobe.  I've rebooted my machines.  I've signed out of the CC and signed back in.
Right now I'm mostly frustrated by the inability to use the program for anything function.
    Any suggestions.

    Thanks Victoria, here you go.
SSD is my root volume (most people would have "Macintosh HD" instead), so that is where /Users/… resides: so for example my home folder is at /Users/dave which is the same as /Volumes/SSD/Users/dave. You can see that saving from PS has made LR think I have image folders at /Users/… when I do not, and never have. You can see below "SSD" is the volume "Users" where the real image folders live (an external Firewire drive in this case).
I have expanded "Show Parent" to the root of each volume in that screenshot.
So under SSD, "/Users/Lightroom Photos 2/…" is bogus and under Users "Lightroom Photos 2" is legitimate.
