History brush no longer working

Considering myself an "advanced newbie" (or maybe I'm just a regular newbie considering how much there is to learn) in Photoshop I might have missed something obvious here, but hoping someone will point me in the right direction....
This is in Photoshop CS3 in MacOS 10.4.11 on a Powerbook G4 by the way.
I came across a guide on how create black/white photos with a dash of color in selected areas: http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/mono-with-a-dash-of-colour-photoshop-cs2-tutor ial/
So I took a picture of a tree, wanting to make the background black/white while the tree and a section of the grass should be colored. I wanted to try to make the edits non-destructive, so I did this with new layers, but I'm not sure I did it right. Here's a screenshot of my layers: http://img389.imageshack.us/my.php?image=layerspg1.png
"Background" is the actual photo (in color)
"Hue/saturation 1" is an adjustment layer which desatured the colors
"Hist.brush (tree)" is the layer where I painted back the tree's colors
"Hist-brush (grass)" is likewise the layer where I painted back the grass' colors
Having selected the tree or grass layer I've used the "History brush" tool to paint back the colors, and the "Eraser" tool to remove anything I've painted too much back. This has worked fine, and I've been working at it for many hours yesterday, saving (as PSD) as I went along. But today nothing happens when I paint an area with the history brush!!!
I really don't know what the history brush does, other than it worked getting back the colors -is the problem that I saved the file, quit Photoshop, then opened it up again today, given that the brush has something to do with history?
Please don't tell me I have to start from scratch, painting back all those details once again :-(

The History Brush States and Snapshots are only available while a file remains open.
Once you close the file, your States and Snapshots will disappear so work on Layers and save the file with unflattened layers.

  • Since updating to v.3.4.5 adjustment brushes no longer work? Please help??

    Hi Guys,
I have just updated to Aperture 3.4.5.
Annoyingly the adjustment brushes and sliders such as "straighten" no longer work. They are added to my adjustments panel when I select them from the drop-down menu, but are accompanied by the sound of the dreaded apple beep (suggesting something is wrong) and do not change the cursor into the appropriate tool, thus preventing me from carrying out these particular adjustments.
If someone has any solutions for this problem, it would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

Test again in a different user account with a small test library. Does it still not work for a different user after reinstalling?
And test in your regular account with a small test library.
is it possibly something to do with an incombatiability between the new update and a plug-in?
Which plug-ins are you using? Are they all compatible with Aperture 3.4 and Lion?
Aperture 3.4 and later: Some third-party plug-ins are no longer compatible

  • History function no longer works

The Search function of my firefox browsing history doesn't work. I key the combination of CTRL + H to initiate the "History" left side panel. Then, I used to be able to key-in text into the Search feature and have it bring up relevant web sites that I visited in the past. However, suddenly, over the past three weeks or so, the keyword history Search feature no longer works, despite my saved history of web site browsing is still listed, after keying the CTRL + H combination.

Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Dictation & Speech > Test to Speech and make sure that the box for "Speak selected text..." is checked and that the proper Shift+Control+Space keys are set.
If the box is already checked, uncheck and then recheck it to reset the saved preference.

  • History Brush won't work

It's an 8-bit PSD file.  One layer (current, preferred edits) needs some pixels from the original (layer 0).  I make sure to get just layer0 showing, make new snapshot, mark that for the Hx brush.  Target the top layer/visible and go to where I want to repair the pixels.  Paint with the Hx brush.  NOTHING!
It was occasionally flakey in CS3 and CS5, but this is CS6 and should be rock-solid because I just upgraded.
    Nope.
Any advice from history brush gurus?

  • Photoshop CS smudge brush no longer smudges

    Version of Photoshop: CS (8)
    OS: Vista home
    RAM: 2 gigs
    Free Space: 29.7 gigs
    Video card: Nvidia
The problem I am having is my smudge brush will no long smudge, all it does is color with whatever color I currently have selected. I ran into this problem last night when switching between brushes (from a soft brush to a shaped brush), and as soon as I switched, the smudge brush no longer worked as it was supposed to. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling photoshop (including restarting my system), and it reinstall with everything as it was even if everything was completely removed.
I am confused as to the original issue, as well as how to fix the problem of it installing with everything as it was before I uninstalled Photoshop.
If anyone has a fix for either of these issues, I would be very grateful!

Have you tried resetting the tool?

  • Art History Brush problem

After following numerious tutorials and looking at Adobe help, I cannot get the AHB to work in CS3. Get an error message saying there is a programe error. The ordinary History Brush will work for me just fine, but thats not what I want.
    1) Snapshot for history state
    2) new layer to paint on (either empty or filled with plain background)
    3) AHB sellected and paraminters set for brush
What am I doing wrong - any suggestions PLEASE

Have now answered my own problem. Art History brush is only available to 8bit images unlike the History Brush which will work with 8 & 16bit. Could find no info regarding this in Adobe help, or anywhere else!
Found out by using CS4 when the same error message told me what the problem was! . . . . . . . . so easy when you know how.

  • My naviagtion toolbar is visible, but is not bold, and does not work. Also, my History option is no longer working, but it is visible.

Firefox automatically updated yesterday, but when I logged on today to use the computer, my navigation toolbar was no longer operating. It is visible but it is in grey colour, and when I click on it, nothing happens. Also, since this update, my History option is no longer working. None of my history appears when I click on it. I never used to have any problems with either of these functions.

  • How do you get firefox 4 to save tabs and windows and restore them? Don't say set preferences to open them on startup or use restore previous session under history; those do not work. Or is it no longer possible to save windows and tabs?

    Question
How do you get firefox 4 to save tabs and windows and restore them? Don't say set preferences to open them on startup or use restore previous session under history; those do not work. Or is it no longer possible to save windows and tabs?

'''IT'S A EASY AS IT SHOULD BE.'''
This is essentially paulbruster's answer, but I've added the steps some might assume, but which aren't so obvious to those of us who are new at this, like me.
This solution might ''appear'' to be long and complicated, but after you follow the directions once, you'll find it's quick, clean, and simple. Almost like they designed it this way.
    # If you haven't already, open a bunch of tabs on a few different subjects.
    # Click the List All Tabs button on the right side of the tab strip.
    # Select Tab Groups.
    # Create a few groups as described [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/what-are-tab-groups#w_how-do-i-create-a-tab-group here] , i.e. just drag them out of the main thumbnail group into the new groups they create.
    # Now click on any thumbnail in any new group, but not the original big default group you may have left some tabs in.
#A regular Firefox window will open, but'' only the tabs in that group will be visible.'' You also now have the Tab Groups button in the tab strip.
    # Right click on any tab, and there it is: Bookmark All Tabs. Click on it in the list of options. Or you can hit Ctrl+Shift+D instead and go straight to the dialogue box from the tab without any clicks. But don't go looking for this familiar option anywhere else, 'cause it's not there.
    # Now pick an existing folder or create a new one just like you would have before and '''shlpam!''' there they are. New folders are supposed to end up in the Unsorted category all the way at the very bottom, but for some reason mine show up at the bottom of my last sorted category.
    # DO NOT CLICK THE UPPER-RIGHTMOST X to close this group of tabs. This will close ALL of your tabs in all groups, currently visible or not. At least it asks if you're sure first. Instead, click your new Tab Groups button to return to the Boxes 'O Thumbnails window, and click the X in the group box you just bookmarked.
    # Click on another thumbnail to repeat the process with another group, or click on a thumbnail in the big default box to return to the original FF window. You can also click the Tab Groups button at the upper right, or Ctrl+Shift+E, which will also get you ''into'' the Boxes 'O Nails window ''from'' FF.
    # So now when you reopen FF after shutdown, simply select your folder from your Bookmarks and Open All in Tabs. '''Just like paulbruster said. '''

  • SQL Developer SQL History no longer working 3.2.20.09.87

Hi guys, The SQL History (F8) option has started to no longer work within my copy of OSD.
it was working at one point but has gone away.
I have confirmed that "Enable Local History" is enabled and has been set for 30 days history and 50 max revisions
I have confirmed that I still have a SqlHistory.xml file located in my user\operator\AppData\Roaming\SQL Developer\ directory with entries in it (6933 rows of data)
This started to happen after I started to play with the Garbage Collection settings to reduce the memory footprint of OSD.
I have since restored all of my backed up delivered settings, rebooted and the SQL History will not show up again.
My snippets and custom reports are working and I can still see the log detail where I used to see log and sql history options at the bottom of OSD.
I'm using Windows 7 and can provide an OSD dump if it helps.
    Thanks...
    Tom

    Hi Tom,
Be careful about which preference settings relate to the functionality in question.
    1. Tools > Preferences > Environment > Local History > Enable relates to a worksheet's History tab when you File > Open
    2. Tools > Preferences > Database > Worksheet > SQL History Limit relates to View > SQL History pane.
You do not say how you backed up and restored your settings during all your experimentation, but let's assume whatever you did was valid. Whenever some UI component mysteriously disappears, one thing I always check (usually just delete) is the windowinglayout.xml in system3.2.20.09.87\o.ide.11.1.1.4.37.59.48 of my user settings.
For example, I can use the SQL History pane's tab context menu to Float it, then adjust it's size by dragging it's edges down to a grey square a few pixels wide/high. Close SQL Developer, reopen, View > SQL History. Darn! Where did it go?
    Hope this helps,
    Gary

  • Will the eraser work like PS's history brush?

I've just been reading about Photoshop's history brush which sounds good. Can we do the same thing in Elements (3, in my case)?

To respond to Jack, not as far as I know, Elements had no history brush in any version that I am aware of.
The history brush is nothing like the eraser. History brush puts back to original... or to stages of original (according to strenght setting on tools) and you can do many little things with it that no other tool can master. Blend colors.. blend textures... fix edges where you have changed something as in changing an object or background and daintlly edge around either for a seamless effect.
And to respond to Barbara thank you for reminding me of that.. I just wish there were someway to get a cheaper upgrade... I just did purchase this latest version of Elements a few months ago and did not realize how important history brush could be until I had an occassion to use one somewhere else and it is awsome. $299 is way too steep for me as I have been recently laid-off from my normal work place for lack of work. I just invested well over $100 in elements bundle with Premier and that extra would put it up really high. (I may call them though and see what they offer) They have the best products and if you have not used the history brush yu have no idea the application you will find for it once you have it...

  • Why are the back/forwards buttons no longer working after upgrade?

Hi, I recently upgraded from Firefox 3.5 (I believe) to Firefox 4.0.1 and now the back and forwards buttons no longer work. I tried resetting the settings under the toolbars > customize, etc. That didn't work. FYI, I'm using a mac. Any solutions? Thanks in advance...

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • After updating to Firefox 3.6.13 saved passwords no longer work

Prior to updating to 3.6.13 saved usernames and passwords worked as they should (those fields were automatically filled in). Now after installing 2.6.13 most saved login info will not fill in upon entering the web site. I can go to tools, options, security, saved passwords and all are still listed, yet do not work. I have deleted a couple thinking Firefox would then ask to save login data for that same site, but it doesn't. I tried reverting back to my previous version of 3.5.16 bur saved passwords will no longer work there either.
It seems as if Firefox doesn't see the saved info.

    * Make sure that you not run Firefox in (permanent) [[Private Browsing]] mode.
    * You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
    * To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting <b>Firefox will: Use custom settings for history</b>
    * Uncheck: [ ] "Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session"
