History is always cleared when I exit Firefox

My privacy is set to remember history, every time I start up ff all history is forgotten. "clear history when ff closes" is NOT checked. Getting to be a pain, especially for forums.

* Make sure that you do not use Clear Recent History to clear the Browsing History.
* Make sure that the History is set to at least 1 day: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: "Remember visited pages for at least"
* Make sure that you do not start Firefox in Private Browsing mode (Tools > Stop Private Browsing is grayed, see Private Browsing)
* To see History and Cookie settings in Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting "Firefox will: Use custom settings for history"
You can look at these prefs on the about:config page.
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.history_expire_days (180) (also affects saved form data)
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.history_expire_days_min (90)
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />

• Cache, cookies and history are not clearing when I close Firefox even though they are set to do so and have been for ages

I recently had an update (or upgrade?) for FF 16. Today (and I believe the update was done a day or two ago?) my cache, cookies and history are not clearing when I close FF. Also, certain links are not working. Not links for full web pages but for site pop-ups (like the smilie window on a message board). They worked a few days but are not working today. I click the link and nothing happens. I noticed the problem with the cookies not clearing for a few weeks ago but it was only on one site not all sites which is what's happening now.
My apologies if that's a little confusing. Thanks!

At any rate, have you tried running Firefox in Private Browsing mode? This will ensure that no infromation from your session is saved once you exit Private Browsing mode and/or exit Firefox.
You can set Firefox to always start in Private Browsing mode: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/private-browsing-browse-web-without-saving-info#w_how-do-i-always-start-firefox-in-private-browsing

• Downloads Window is clearing when I exit Firefox 7.0.1

Hi guys,
I've noticed with 7.* that there is no option to keep my download list in the download window in the privacy options. It clears every time I restart my computer. I use the download window to manage some things I do. Has the option moved or just been removed altogether? Previous versions had this functionality and I found it very handy.

In Privacy select Use custom settings for history to see the pref for Remember download history
If that preference isn't there, you may have a security program installed which took over that function, and is hiding it in that dialog box. Try it in the Firefox SafeMode. <br />

• Auto-erase downloads when I exit Firefox.

How do I Auto-erase downloads when I exit Firefox? I don't want downloaded files accumulating endlessly on my hard drive - but I do want to keep history and autocomplete info.

With all due respect to my colleague Morbus, the way I read the OP's request is that he wants to automatically delete the actual file that he downloaded through Firefox when he closes Firefox, while retaining the download history of those files. That is diametrically opposed to how Firefox has always worked, and I haven't seen any mention of Firefox 4.0 having a new feature such as that.
BTW, 'autocomplete' data like "form and search history" is stored in a different file than "download history" data is stored, and there are separate preferences for toggling the saving of each (Options > Privacy) and the deleting of each in Clear Recent History./

• Passwords after storing are automatically being cleared when i start firefox the very next time

when firefox asks me whether to save passwords i always click remember because i don't like to enter the passwords again and again and i only use this computer.
recently, the stored passwords are being cleared when i start firefox.
and firefox asks whether to save passwords again and again.
i have tried the solutions: there are no exceptions, no private browsing and passwords are cleared after shutdown option is not selected. is there a solution for this????

If you use cleanup software like CCleaner then check the settings for the Firefox application.
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

When I exit firefox it closes the program but it gets stuck in memory so when I open it again i have to kill the process in task manager, and it can be right away or I can come back a few hours later and its still stuck in task manager, I am tired of having to kill the processes every time I use firefox.

Hanging at exit is most often caused by an Extension or a Plugin.

<u>Safe Mode</u>
You may need to use Safe Mode (click on "Safe Mode" and read) to localize the problem. Firefox Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode that disables Extensions and some other features of Firefox. If you are using a theme, switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes <u>before</u> starting Safe Mode. When entering Safe Mode, do not check any items on the entry window, just click "Continue in Safe Mode". Test to see if the problem you are experiencing is corrected.
See:
Troubleshooting extensions and themes
Troubleshooting plugins
Basic Troubleshooting
If the problem does not occur in Safe-mode then disable all of your Extensions and Plug-ins and then try to find which is causing it by enabling <u>one at a time</u> until the problem reappears. <u>You MUST close and restart Firefox after EACH change</u> via File > Restart Firefox (on Mac: Firefox > Quit). You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window.

• I lose a bunch of tabs when I exit Firefox, even though I click for it to save the tabs for next time I open it

When I use Firefox, I usually have a bunch of tabs open. Sometimes I have a tab open as a reminder to look further into the subject, or I plan on going back to it to finish reading whatever it was. Before, if my computer would restart due to updates, when I started Firefox up again, it would say "Well...this is embarrassing" and allow me to reopen all the tabs I once had. This no longer works. I was even able to close Firefox through the Task Manager on windows, and have the same result. Now this doesn't happen. So I tried to close it and it asked to save my tabs for the next time I open Firefox. It doesn't save them, as it's always just my homepage and I never see an option to recall the old tabs. I even set the settings to "When Firefox starts: Show my windows and tabs from last time." This also does not work. I'm getting tired of having to remember all over again what sites I had up. Usually they aren't something that I need bookmarked, so that's why I don't do it. Also, it would really clutter my bookmarks if I did. Please help.

Thanks for the reply. I never get the option to "Restore Previous History" from History. I don't even have the box checked that asks to delete the history when Firefox closes. I don't know what's wrong, no matter what, I always lose everything. I have the box marked "Show my windows and tabs from last time" for when I open Firefox, but it never shows that, just my homepage. Also, when I check my History, it only shows the pages that I opened since I started Firefox, nothing from before. Even if I were to open up 10 pages now, close Firefox, and open it, the history would only show the homepage that opened this time, not any of the 10 pages that I opened 5 minutes ago.

• When I exit Firefox and later load Firefox it says its open, although I can't use, have to go to Windows Task Manager and force it to close before I can load it again.

Problem is on a Dell Studio XPS desktop with the i7 processor. Current version used is 3.6.13, although the problem occurred with previous version, and only occurs intermittently. Does not seem to be time related. Sometimes, though not always, there will be two copies of Firefox open in the Task Manager "processes". When I close Firefox, and reload, runs fine until the next time.

• Options not saved when I exit Firefox

I set my homepage to google , to appear on start-up , and cookies to be valid till they expire , press OK , happily surf the net , close firefox , and all my choices have gone out the window. Start with a blank page , I select home and get the firefox star page , and cookies are valid till I close Firefox. Running on 64-bit Windows 7 home premium , update every time Firefox publishes an update , what am I doing wrong , thanks in advance , Ron

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history:
*do not clear the Cookies
*do not clear the Site Preferences
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/remove-recent-browsing-search-and-download-history
Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.
Clearing cookies will remove all specified (selected) cookies including cookies with an allow exception that you would like to keep.
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
There is software like Advanced SystemCare with its Surfing Protection feature that can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes.
If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

• MY history does not clear when i select clear history +clear is on"everything" ?

clearing history does not work anymore, I select the option to clear everything. In order to clear history I have to go under show all history and delete each individual item

I have the latest version. I have History only selected. When I manually select Clear Recent History, it deletes some items but not everything. I just performed Clear Recent History and 8 sites are still showing up. None of them are in my Bookmarks and most of them I haven't visited in weeks. It is a real pain finding the sites that I would like to select when all this garbage fills up the list.

• When I exit Firefox, it continues running in the background. How can I prevent this and keep it from happening apparently by default?

I know that Firefox continues running in the background because after I exit the program, I use CCleaner and it indicates programs are still running: Firefox. This happens every time I exit Firefox. There seems to be a default mechanism to keep it running. How can I prevent this?

See "Hang at exit":

• Why is all history cleared when I close Firefox, even when Remeber History is specified?

History and cookies can be removed or not recorded several ways;
* 1) Running Firefox in Private Mode (nothing is recorded)
* 2) Privacy settings<br>(Type about:preferences#privacy<enter> in the address bar.)
* 3) Many disk cleaners and anti-virus type programs can remove data from browsers. Open their settings and have them leave the browsers alone.

• When I exit Firefox, the firefox.exe process continues to run. I cannot re-launch Firefox unless I first stop the firefox.exe process using Task Manager. How do I fix this problem?

I am running WinXP Pro, SP3. I uninstalled and re-installed Firefox and the problem didn't go away. This problem started about 2 months ago. Firefox always worked fine before that. This happens very frequently -- If I have been using Firefox previously, and I closed the program, when I try to re-launch it, about 50% of the time, I need to use Task Manager to stop a persistently running firefox.exe process.

• A website I opened now always appears when I open Firefox. 1.How can I stop this? 2.How can I eliminate urls I no longer nris?

I have a Motorola Droidx.
Re Question 2, I just don't want to have to wait through every word I haven't looked up on dictionary.com to find a site I looked up yesterday that was interesting but not interesting enough to bookmark.

You can set the Firefox home page by opening the menu key, selecting preferences, then use the 'Start page' drop down menu to chose the option you want.
Firefox mobile does not have a way to remove select URLs from the History. Just the global clear private data button. There are extensions that will allow you to clear just history or cookies but that is not quite what you want.
