Hit counter, hyperlink appearance, fetch questions

Hi. New to Mac/Iweb. Hope you don't mind a compound question -
I rebuilt my site recently using Iweb (www.joshbass.com), and for the most part, like it very much. However, there are a couple things I'm lost on. My settings tell me that on my hyperlinks, they're supposed to be white when "normal", and turn red on rollover. However, I have three browsers right now, IE, Firefox, and Safari, and only in Firefox do they behave correctly. In the other two browsers they simply stay white when rolled over.
Secondly, I wanted to put a hit counter in (I believe there's no other way to measure traffic with this program, right?), but I'm NOT using .mac. So I found a random free counter, pasted the code into a web widget, and in Iweb it looked fine. Once published, not so much. Doesn't show up at all. Tried all the browsers, no difference.
Third, I was wondering if there's a simple way to tie Fetch (for FTP) to Iweb, so that as I update the site in Iweb, I can publish only the changes, instead of FTPing the entire site's contents. There are indeed directions in the Iweb help files, but I'm afraid of doing something dumb and publishing garbage.
Thanks.

hi derek,
1) the hit counter is a .mac only feature! you need to get an alternative counter such as statcounter:
http://karreth.com/iweb/How%20To%20Add%20A%20StatCounter.html
2)yes - check these instructions
http://www.rowan-cottage.co.uk/Site/Autoplay_Music.html
3)no sure what you mean with "automatically"
4)my favorite is cyberduck. i also ahve some instructions for it:

  • Hit Counter not appearing.

OK I'm using iWeb, the URL is at Godaddy, but the hosting is at my /mac account. I have the family pac. Two web sites the hit counter works just fine. A third one I got it to work on a page where I don't need it, but can't get it to SHOW on the page where I want it. I've tried to put it anywhere on the page, and have restarted etc etc. Suggestions?

what is the purpose of your link? hit counter? or pushing wares?
there are only links on your page, people can google 'hit counter'...
... at least, you should show an example of what looks like iweb hit counter.

(to the left) it looks like iweb hit counter, but it is a StatCounter.

  • How do you track hits on hit counter in iWeb?

I have been creating a personal poetry website on iWeb and I am fairly new to Mac in general.  I found the Hit Counter button and added it to every page on my website.  My question is how do I see how many hits i have?  The hit counter does not show up on my published site.

The hit counter only appears when you publish to MobileMe.
Search the iWeb Help for ftp to learn what else is not supported.
There are lots of alternative counters you can use.

Is everyone else with the iWeb hit counter getting a white question mark in a blue box? My hit counter has been out ever since yesterday afternoon. For a brief time it reappeared and now it is gone again.
    Thank you.

The counters are back now, but hits made during the outage don't seem to have counted (there were no cookies from my iWeb pages at that time). There is more on this on another thread.
By the way, Lorna, I didn't answer your last question to me some time ago - my Japanese is far from fluent, but I get by.

  • Hit Counter button not appearing when I upload the web site.

I am using iWeb version 3.0.4 on OS 10.6.8, and on the Welcome page, I added the Hit Counter button.  When I upload the web site, the Hit Counter button does not appear.  Anyone have any solutions as to why it isn't appearing?  Thanks...

Where are you hosting the site? The counter will not work on ftp servers, only on MobileMe.  If you are hosting on MobileMe increase the footer height considerable and publish. If the counter then appears you can move it closer to the body/footer border and reduce the footer height.
If you're not on MobileMe consider a 3rd party counter like StatCounter.  This tutorial describes how to add it to iWeb pages: #13 - Adding a StatCounter as an HTML Snippet
If you're on MobileMe you know that MMe will be discontinued on June 30 of next year.  This may be of interest: #23 - Life After MobileMe

  • Hit Counter shows a question mark?

OK, I went to several of the discussion pages to learn how to add a hit counter.
    This is what I did:
    1) go to INSERT menu and click on "button" then slide down to "hit button"
    2) A item shows up with a question mark in the middle and nothing else.
What am I suppose to do with the question mark in the box? I tried to play with it in finding out what is its purpose and what had it got to do with my website in trying to create a hit counter in iWeb. Yes I do have Mobileme account.

    I solved the problem

  • Website hit count and rating stars

Please assist I have 3 questions:
    1.       How to add the hit count on a website so that I can able to see how many people visited my site.
    2.       How to add the rating stars for music/video so that people can able to rate/vote for the best song/video of the month.
    Thank you for your help.

I'm in complete agreement with JoeyD.  Hit counters add nothing special to a typical site.  Since they don't tell you where your hits are coming from or whether or not these are unique hits, I see no point in them.
@ Shocker.  Your argument doesn't hold water. A regular web site is NOT the same as a web forum or blog where user participation is part of the whole experience. It's like comparing oranges to ducks - totally different.
If you look closely at Adobe's main web site or any other commercial site like Apple or Dell you're not likely to see hit counters on them.  Why?  Because they're irrelevant.  The only people who care about site traffic are site owners and developers.

  • IWeb '09 "Hit Counter"  Widget

Is the "hit counter" widget supposed to log a "hit" every time someone views/visits an/each individual page of a website, or only once per visit to the site? It appears that every page visited of the site registers a "hit." Is this usual and customary?

Normally I thought a hit counter just measured the amount of visitors to your site as a whole, not just individual pages.

  • Hit Counter on iWeb 08

After I published my page with iWeb 08 the hit counter disappeared from my site. It is still there in iWeb just not in the published site.
Is there a way to get it to work again? If I delete it and put it back in is there a way to start it at a given number so I don't have to start at zero again?

You might want to see if it is just a problem with Safari caching. Sometimes Safari draws on the cache instead of updating the page correctly. You can fix this in several ways. This is probably the easiest:
    Open Safari
In the 'Safari' menu choose 'empty cache'
Go to your web site and see if the counter appears.

  • Hit counter on .Mac

I've found that since upgrading to iWeb '08 the hit counter under My Pages on my .Mac home page is no longer there. It worked fine while I was working with iWeb '06. Everything else appears to be in order. The hit counter is working on the web page itself. Anyone with similar experiences?

I am having a similar issue: hit counter worked for a while but today it no longer appears in published folders/internet. Could there be a corrupt file(i.e .plst)?

  • Hit Counter For Web Site

I've published a site to .Mac for a friend, and her domain name, which is hosted on godaddy is being forwarded to the .mac site. I'm using masking so only her domain name shows in the address bar of each page. That's all working well.
I've added a hit counter through iweb to the first page but it won't show up when I go to the site by using the domain name. If I go to it using the .mac address it shows up. What's odd is if I go to the site first by using the .mac address where the counter always shows up then go to the site by putting in the domain name it will then show up there as well. If I go to the site again later by the domain name-no counter. If I repeat this by using the .mac address first then going back, it's there.
I read other past posts about this issue but I didn't see if it could be completely resolved. I normally use Safari but even when I use Firefox it doesn't show up either.
    Can anyone help?
    John

    John:
If you added the hit counter from within iWeb then that's the reason it doesn't show up. It will only work on the .Mac server.
What you need to do is use StatCounter.com. It requires some post publication editing of the page that you want the counter on. If you make changes to the page later on then you'll have to reedit the page again.
What has been suggested is to put a text box with "STATCOUNTER" in it where you want the counter to appear. Then in the post publication file, search for STATCOUNTER and replace it with the code that the site provides you.
With that you can get daily, weekly hits, a world map of where the hits came from and lots more. There's a variety of text or image counters.
In this site, Old Toad's Tutorials I put the STATCOUNTER in the main text box at the bottom and make the text orange. When I added the counter, it comes up in the text and color that I chose. If you put it in it's own text box, you can use the stye that StatCounter provides when you set up the counter.

  • MySQL database record hits counter?

Can I find out how many times a record from the MySQL databse was called and displayed on a web browser?Basically a MySQL database record hits counter. I’m using PHP/MySQL.

    >to the two files that were created
    >Two files?
Yes 2 files. In Dreamweaver CS3 & CS4 When using the "Insertà Data Objectsà Master Detail Page Set" function you must create two files:
    1. results.php
    2. detail.php
It appears that these two files work together hand in hand. You did not specify where nor how to include an update record set that gets executed every time another record set that I want to count fires. So I combined the two as one until it was clarified.

  • Hit Counter Not Working :(

I want to add the "hit counter" on my welcome page, but when I go to publish it...it does not appear. It doesn't even appear on iWeb. What am I doing wrong??

    SPV:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Is it still linked to the old site?
If you published you site to your second .Mac account then you'll have tow versions of it out there. One on the first account and the one on the new account. They will have different URLs as the default URL will be:
    http://homepage.mac.com/.Mac account name/
So unless you deleted it from the first account each account will have that site. If you don't want the site on the first account go to the iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb folder for that account and look for the folder with the sites name and delete it. There will be an index.html file there also you can delete.

  • MARS Query 'Hit-Count' versus 'Total-Count'

Hi, I have a question about MARS queries: I run queries using 'custom columns' and I continually hit over 5000 entries. I was wondering if there is a way to show the following:
    Custom Colums:
    - event type set
    - source IP address
    - destination IP address, port, and protocol
    - <NEW FIELD> 'Hit-count'
The reason I posit the 'Hit-count' field is that this would help me see everything that happened on the first three columns and not limit me when MARS says 'only the first 5000 entries will be displayed'.
If there is any way to count the number of times it happened in a hit-count field, versus counting the number of times it happened and then limiting the displayed results, I would think that would be tremendously useful.
Please let me know if there is already a way to do this, or if there are any plans to add this! Thanks!

Don't know about queries, but you define 'Count' in MARS rules, so you could clone the built-in rule and perhaps modify the count value to suit your needs. I know this is not exactly what you are looking for but it might get you going in the right direction. You also have the following variables to play with to further suit your needs:
ANY-(Default). Signifies that the IP address for each count is any IP address.
SAME-Signifies that the IP address for each count is the same IP address. This variable is local to its offset.
DISTINCT- Signifies that the IP address for each count is a unique IP address. This variable is local to its offset.
$Target01 to $Target20-The same variable in another field or offset signifies that the IP address for each count is the same IP address.
    Have a look at:
    http://ciscosystems.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/vpn/ciscosec/mars/5_3/uglc/rules.htm#wp1054961
Also on strange idea, but it might work, in the "Maximum Number of Rows Returned" why don't you try and put 1000, does the MARS accept that? I seriously doubt it would work, but worth a try. I think they used to have an even lower limit in older version (1000).

The hit counter appears in the "Footer" area of your iWeb page.
