Hit Highlighting in PDF Web Search

In Acrobat Reader 9, under Edit > Preferences > Search, "Enable search highlights from external highlight server" option is by default set to false. For those of us who use third party search engines to search PDF files on the web, this is a disaster. The only way to enable hit highlighting in this situation is to have users change their settings manually, which is a lot to ask of people who are not tech savvy.
Does anyone know of a solution to this problem? Would Adobe change the default settings to true in future versions? Is there some kind of workaround?
Thanks,
Simon

Why did Adobe change the defaut? I am installing dtSearch and it works great in Adobe 8 and below. But Adobe changed version 9 changed and so now the hits do not show and the "Jump to next Hits" and "Jump to previous Hits" does not show on the Adobe toolbar.
My problem is that this makes dtSearch look bad - like their search page is no good.
If I create web pages using dtSearch, the users will not know enough to set the Enable search highlights from external highlight server.
Even if I put a big note on the web page, I know that people will not read it and they will think that the web page is buggy.
I sure wish Adobe would put this back and make Enable search highlights from external highlight server the default.

  • Hit highlighting (PDF) is not working with Safari

We have been facing a weird problem with PDF documents displayed in Safari. This problem is reproducible in many of our machines. The problem is like this..
Adobe Reader has support for hit highlighting in PDF documents when it is being viewed in any browser. For example,
    http://www.mysite.com/myfile.pdf#xml=http://www.somesite.com/words.txt
This URL should highlight the words specified in words.txt file. But, unfortunately many of our Safari browsers (on Windows machines) don't highlight any text in opened pdf file. The same URL works fine in rest of the browsers (IE, Firefox and Chrome). I could not figure out where the problem is!
Can anybody please help me on this?
    Thanks in advance,

Go step by step and test.

    Hi all,
we've got a problem using the search function of Adobe Acrobat 9.4.5 (Windows XP), german version:
Search results are no longer highlighted in PDF text ("normal" and "advanced" search)
    - "Advanced" search highlights the result only when clicking the item in the list TWICE!
    - "Normal" search does not highlight the first result on a page; when proceeding, other results on the same page are highlighted...
Does anybody know a workaround (No, there is no chance to install another Acrobat version)

  • How do I include a page from web search into an Email?

I have a HP TouchSmart 610-1147c Desktop computer. running Windows 7 64 bit.  I should have known the answer to this question years ago, but I don't....terrible huh?  Anyway, how do I include a page from a web search that I did into an Email?  Believe it or not, I've never had to do this before, so don't have the faintest idea how to do this.  I have a feeling that it would be sent as an attachment, but how don't know how to do that!!
I would appreciate any help that anyone would take the time to give me.  I thank you beforehand for having patience with me and my silly question.

Well, the way I would do it is to copy and paste the web address in the email, so the recipient can click on the link and get right to the Web page.
For example, I just googled "horses," and here is the result of that search:
    http://www.google.com/#hl=en&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=horses&oq=horses&aq=f&aqi=g4&aql=&gs_l=h...
I highlighted the Web address, copied it, and then pasted it in the response.  Same thing can be done into an emial.
Does that make sense?  Or were you looking for something else?

  • Web search box not working

I have the latest version of Firefox for my MacBook Pro. It was working fine up until a couple months ago. I've always used the web search box as a quick way to find what I was looking for. Now, if I type in anything in the web search box (far right side of navigation menu bar) and hit return, nothing happens. I click on the spyglass and nothing happens. I have to open Google's homepage and do the search there. Anyone know why this suddenly stopped working and/or how to get it functioning again?
I've tried re-installing Firefox and resetting the default settings on the navigation bar.

  • Language setting affects E.g. web searches regardless of area setting

    Hi there.
This is not so much a problem than just irritating, but I'd like to know if there's a fix for this issue.
I'm using an iPhone 5 and iPad 4th Gen. OS updated to newest (iOS 7.1.2)
I'm from and live in Finland. As a first language however, I speak both Swedish (another official language of this country) and Finnish. So naturally in order to keep my both first languages at a reasonably good level, I have chosen Swedish as my OS language, and Finland selected as my region. So far, so good, right?
Well, there's a small hitch here. The phone now assumes that I want only Swedish (the country, not the language) search results in my web searches, among other things. Say I write the name of any place, person, TV-show, movie, football team or any other non-language specific search, my hits will be those of Swedish websites first, then English, such as Wikipedia pages. Never a Finnish page.
Basically, the OS works as it should work for a Swede, but I'd like it to work for me as it should work for a Finn.
I wonder if this problem exists in other bi-/multilingual areas as well, which are many.
And of course I wonder if there's a setting I have missed or a fix for this.
    Thanks in advance!

I think the order of languages in the Language page may determine this (region is probably irrelevant).  Try making sure that the order is Swedish then Finnish (rather than Swedish then English, for example).  This can be done by switching the device to Finnish and back to Swedish again.

  • Is there a way to hightlight a word or phrase on a websit and do a web search on it without retyping it into the search box

I would like to highlight a word or phrase on a website while in Firefox and press a shortcut key to do a web search on this term without retyping the whole word or phrase into the search box. Can this be done?

If you select a word or phrase, then right-click you should get the option to search for that word or phrase. It will use the search engine that is currently selected in the [[search bar]].

  • Spotlight not offering any new Yosemite results (Wikipedia, Maps, App Store, Web Search etc.)

    User from Europe (Finland) here.
    Problem:
My Spotlight only offers local hits (including limited local dictionary results) which is very gimped down version of what is advertised.
"Spotlight pulls information from new sources like Wikipedia, news sites, Maps, iTunes, movie listings, and more." from https://www.apple.com/osx/design/
    Screenshot with simple example:
    So far I've tried:
Made sure I have everything checked on in Spotlight preferences.
    Rebooted.
Forced Spotlight to rebuild its index by first excluding Macintosh HD and then removing it from exclusions.
    Rebooted again.
Made sure location preferences that system services has access to my location.
Made sure there is no firewall restrictions, proxies etc.
Tried to change Safari search engine from DuckDuckGo to Bing
    Removed Adblock extensions from Safari.
I have no idea why my Spotlight isn't working as it's supposed to be.
Spotlight calculator and unit conversions work fine.
As an European I'm used to getting the cold shoulder from various nice iOS features (no movie listings in Siri, for example) but I cannot think why Wikipedia or Map results would be removed from Spotlight if I'm from Europe.
Any help would be appreciated but complete reinstall of Yosemite is unfortunately out of the question due to work.
Another example of Spotlight failing to offer anything from the web.

    Hi there Usernamenotok,
You may want to take a look at your Spotlight Suggestions and Location settings. The page below form the USer Guide has more information.
About Spotlight Suggestions - Mac Help
If you do not want your Spotlight search queries and Spotlight Suggestions usage data sent to Apple, you can turn off Spotlight Suggestions. Simply deselect the checkboxes for both Spotlight Suggestions and Bing Web Searches in the Search Results pane of Spotlight preferences in System Preferences on your Mac. If you turn off Spotlight Suggestions and Bing Web Searches, Spotlight will search the contents of only your Mac.
You can turn off Location Services for Spotlight Suggestions in the Privacy pane of System Preferences on your Mac by clicking Details next to System Services, then deselecting Spotlight Suggestions. If you turn off Location Services on your Mac, your precise location will not be sent to Apple. To deliver relevant search suggestions, Apple may use the IP address of your Internet connection to approximate your location by matching it to a geographic region.
Information collected by Apple will be treated in accordance with Apple’s Privacy Policy, which can be found at www.apple.com/privacy.
Note: Spotlight Suggestions may not be available in all regions.

    Hi Vikas,
The recommendation is not to modify the out of box display templates.  Whenever new patch or service pack applied Microsoft can update those out of box display templates, then you modified version will be lost.
So, create a copy of the display template and make the changes as per your requirement.  Once created new display template you can map it with the required result type and query rules.  Please refer to the following article.

  • Hit highlighted summary problems

I have an issue/question regarding the hit highlighted summary returned by SharePoint 2013 search.
I am using the api in c# ( Microsoft.Office.Server.Search.Query.KeywordQuery class)
to perform a search in order to return a list of documents and display them in a formatted list, I also want to display a few lines of the textual context.
In quite a few cases the correct documents are found when using a simple keyword, however the keyword used does not appear in the hit highlighted summary. I have tried increasing the number of sentences returned in the hithighlightedsummary property e.g.
keywordquery.highlightedsentencecount = 10 but still none of these sentences have the keyword in them.
Can anyone let me know what is happening here?
    Thanks,
    Neil

    Hi Neil,
You can change the length of the search result summary using the Query.SummaryLength property.
