Hitachi 400gig HD as a 2nd Drive in RAID1

Hitachi HDS724040KLSA80 - I am in the process of ordering one of these as it is the same HD that came in my PM-G5 2.3 as the standard drive. I wanted another identical drive as an internal RAID backup drive.
Goal: To have a 2nd drive as a backup/mirror of the 1st drive.
- I am considering to RAID1 the two drives together as a backup solution.
- I want an internal solution that does not involve more cabling and peripherals lying around.
I have also considered the new 500 gig version as its faster and has more storage, but am swayed by having an identical HD (in speed and storage spec as the original). Is this necessary?
Another idea I had was to get 2 of the newer 500 gig drives and use them and take out the original drive and use that in an external casing as portable/external backup solution (can share data between my 4 Macs). But will this invalidate my 3 year Applecare?
(I am a home computer user and have tons of video on the HD as well as photos, ALL our cd's, so a multimedia user, as well as the regular office, internet stuff.)
I am new to this, but have a good BASIC understanding of all this, but would appreciate any input from more knowledgable folk.
Appreciate any and all help.
PowerMacG5 dual2.3,400HD,1.5gRam,20"CD + iMacG4-17,80HD,1gRAM   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Apt Exp & Ext,iSight,iPod,BT m&k,Mighty-mouse,eyeTv,Nikon D70

OK, so I've shelved the RAID1 idea. Seem the popular opinion is that that is not the way to go for backup purposes.
Q: So what benefit do I derive from installing a 2nd HD inside the computer?
I don't really need the storage space (Yet!) as 400 gig suffices for my home needs, but I do want a secure systematic (nightly, or even weekly backup of my Home Directory, or selected parts of - I don't need to backup all the TV shows the eyeTV records!)
I just thought that putting the 2nd drive within the computer would save space and be ALWAYS ON/READY for backup at a faster rates. If I could get an internal solution that would be the best... What do you guys think?
Is an external HD the best solution for backup? Any recomendations? (Lacie seems to get bad reviews EVERYWHERE!) I would like a 400GB HD as minimum if possible.
Allan, as some people (inc. you I think) have 2 internal drives, 1 for the OS, and a 2nd one for data (iTunes music, iPhoto pictures, iMovie7iDVD projects etc...). Then this is backed up on a regular basis on to an external drive as the back up solution. What drive would you recommend as the OS (boot?) drive, as I guess it can be a smaller 80gig drive? Then I can leave the 400gig OEM drive in its place as the data drive and buy an external 500gig backup drive for the whole lot.
Sorry if I sound a bit basic, I'm new to this and don't want to:
a) get lost in the tech info
b) spend hundreds $ buying multiple 400gig drives etc.
c) have the best backup solution
I don't want to loose everything from a HD failure again (as on my PB-12).
I appreciate all your comments and recomendations.

  • How do you boot up from a 2nd drive?

I will be installing a 2nd drive and doing a clean instal of 10.6. How do I boot up from this drive, and then how do I transfer the files, favopurites and email etc across?

You asked if it transferred every folder. I answered that Migration Assistant does not transfer the old System, only your User files. Every single User file.
Once you have finished transferring your User files, you can stop using the old system drive, or even remove it and set it aside on a shelf as a backup, or wait a week or two and and re-use it for something else.
Once you boot from a new System drive, / (the root directory) is located on the new Boot Drive,  and new /Users is created there, and everything is referenced from there. Move your User files over as well, and the old drive will not be referenced any more.

  • Trying to restore from migration assistant to 2nd drive...

I recently got a Mac Mini server with 2 500gb HDs. Coming from my old mac pro I was able to successfully migrate everything except my itunes library to the system HD (not enough space). My itunes was too big to fit on the 500gb drive so I'd like to move/migrate my itunes library to the 2nd drive. How do I go about getting my time machine backup of my itunes onto the non-system HD? (the old system I'm migrating from had a larger HD than the mini....er, obviously?!)

I just spent 3 hrs with AT&T tech support. No visual voicmail! i wiped phone 3 times, reset. everything no visual voicemail.
I can access it through dialing holding down 1 then enter password, bu t Visual voicemail is DEAD. ATT says apple has major bug and fix won't be out until OCT 5th.

  • PowerPC OS X HD put into Mac Pro 2nd Drive Bay

    Hello all,
I have a PowerPC G5 and a Mac Pro. The G5 had two drives in it, a master boot drive with 10.4.11 on it and a second internal drive with 10.4.9.
I took the second drive out of the G5 and put it into the Mac Pro's second drive bay. The Mac Pro's main drive is running OS 10.5.1.
I figured that I'd have to run the Mac Pro installation disc on the second drive to make it bootable on the Intel system, but it's not allowing me to install. It keeps telling me that I cannot boot off of the second drive in the OS X installation destination window.
How can I fully strip the OS out of the second drive without reformatting it/touching the other files I have on it so I can basically start it as a clean slate for the Intel system installation?

    Hi,
your problem is that your 2nd drive is formatted using APM (Apple Partition Map) instead of GUID. Usually PPC Macs use APM and Intels use GUID. Even though Intel Macs can boot from an (already installed) Intel OS X, the Install DVD refuses to install on APM partitions when run on an Intel Mac. So in order to install OS X on this drive you need to repartition it using GUID partitioning in Disk Utility. This will, of course, delete everything that's on the drive!
If you don't want to do that you can put the drive in the G5, install Leopard and then put it back into your Mac Pro and see if it boots.

  • OSX says it can't fix my 2nd drive on startup?

So I have a 2nd hard drive replacing the optical drive. It's formatted in ExFat so I can access and write on it from both OSX and Win 7.
Every time I restart the mac or go from windows to osx, it will try to mount the 2nd drive and tells me that it "cant fix the drive, however I can still access it", like there was some seriously wrong thing going on with it.
I havent really used the drive yet, so Im not sure if I might lose data or not. Im afraid to store stuff in it.
Does anyone know if that really means something is bad or it just spams that message because of the ExFat thing?
ps: When I run "diskutil list", it says my 2nd hard drive is WINDOWS NTFS...even though Ive formatted it to ExFat via OSX...

You can't format a disk as ExFat on Mac OS X

  • Lost 2nd drive between OS 9.2 and OS 10.3.9

We have a G4 powermac in our office which runs OS 9.2 and also has a second internal hard drive installed for storage. I installed 10.3.9 today, and I cannot get the 2nd drive to show up. It isn't on the desktop, finder window, or disk utility. When I restart the machine in OS 9.2, the drive is safe and sound. What do I do?

    Tiamaha:
Here are a few of other thoughts:
    1. If OS 9 is on a separate Drive, try an Option boot (Hold down the Option Key while you hit the power button. If it is there it should show up. If it doesn't at first, hit the refresh button (circular arrow) and see if it turns up).
    2. Go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and see if it shows up.
    3. Could it be that the physical connection is not secure?
    4. If the HDD does not show up anywhere you cannot install to it. It's a long shot, but you could try Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior and see if it can help.
    Good luck.

  • I have to keep reformatting my 2nd drive why?

I have a 2013 mac mini I have had for a couple of months. With this I had put in a 512gb ssd drive as my "main drive" and a hitachii 1tb 7200rpm as my 2nd drive the day I had the computer. It started yesterday when I brought the computer up the drive was not reconized by os x and either eject ignor or disk utilities. I reformated it thinking I must have done something wrong. I again today started up only to have it happen again. I notice in the disk utilities, my name for the 2nd drive is miising and in it's place is a disc1s1(maybe not exact). Any ideas? I reformatted again, for I had to download an important file and did not have time to research this more, but I am afraid I will lose any data saved to this drive.
Any ideas or suggestions would be highly appricated. Thanks.

Yes, it could be defective out of the box, and in fact it's more likely that a drive will fail when new then it would be a year down the line.
Mac OS X has no native drive tester included, though you can do an erase in Disk Utility and select the option to overwrite all data and see if it completes successfully. If the catalog header space is bad, though, that might not encounter the errors. There are third-party drive test utilities such as TechTool Pro. I'm not aware of any good freeware option, but someone else here might know of something.
    Regards.

Your system will likely fit just fine on a small fast 250GB SSD
What you have is lots of stuff that should not be on the boot drive, data and graphics or media files and libraries that should be moved to another drive.
If you are getting a message like this, STOP, off load files, make room, and make sure to have 15% free or more.
Do not try to move anything from system and its library and sub folders. Move your home user account and just leave the essential home library but move all the rest.
A full drive can have trouble finding free space segments and writing out updates to files and to the directory. And loss of directory means loss of where files are located and their segments.

  • With SSD as primary drive, still need 2nd drive for audio?

If I get an SSD drive as my primary, would I still need a 2nd drive for recording audio? I thought the main reason for needing a 2nd drive was that the 1st drive would be bust moving its needle arounf doing OS stuff (and thus, you wouldn'[t want your audio recording to compete).
But since the SSDs have no moving parts, no needles, heads, etc., would one big SSD drive get the job done? Or, am I still going to want a 2nd drive for audio.
I'm very mobile and would love not to have to lug around a 2nd drive. But if I need to, I need to.
    Thanks for any comments,
    Ron

I'm not using it as a scratch drive.
My current setup is as follows:
128 GB SSD (Patriot TorqX - 260 Read 200 Write) for OS and Applications
4 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Buffer Hard Drives in Software Raid 0 for Scratch.
I also have 1 650MB Hard Drive (Shipped with Mac Pro) that I can use.
I am shooting in HD via an AVCHD Camcorder. Importing/Converting to ProRes. Editing in FCP. Then exporting to three formats (DVD, AVCHD DVD for use in Blu-Ray Set Tops, and some form of Divx for use on a Windows Media Center). Most "Movies" are 20-30 minutes in length.
I am thinking about returning the SSD as I'm having some issues with it. With the drives I have in hand (or if I need something else, let me know), what configuration do you recommend.

  • 2nd drive unformatted and not restored after attempting restore from a system image

I created a system image, which included drive C (where Windows is installed) and drive G (where some installed Windows programs are located).  I then ran into a situation where I wanted to restore from the system image.  With my first attempt,
this process took several days.  When I returned home from work, my computer had booted up into Windows -- drive C had successfully been restored.  I soon found out though that drive G was in an unformatted state.
Now, given the time it took for each drive to restore and the sizes of data for each drive (160gb for C and 1000gb for G), it seemed odd to me that the entire process had completed already, given the time that had passed and the progress indicated for drive
G in the status bar, in the morning before I went to work.  It is entirely possible that one of my cats may have jumped on my desk and somehow cancelled the operation.
    My questions are:
    1. if the restore is cancelled while the 2nd disk is being restored, will the 1st disk (C) still be successfully restored?
    2. why does this process take so long?
    3. if there is some other error, is it displayed?  Does system restore automatically reboot after completion/cancellation?  Is there an error file created somewhere if there was an error, or perhaps something mentioned in a log file?  If so,
    where?
    4. has anyone encountered a similar issue before and can provide any insight?
    5. anything else I'm missing?
I'm attempting to restore a second time, and it is not even halfway through drive C, so it might not be until the end of the week before the entire process completes.  To be safe, especially from nosey cats, I disabled the mouse and keyboard so no input
can interrupt and accidentally cancel the process.
    thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
For the first problem, if the restore is cancelled while the 2nd disk is being restored, the 1st disk (C) can be successfully restored.
For the second problem, I think it is normal to take a long time to finish the process, it is depend on the size of the date.
For the third problem, you may check the setup log files to find the clue of the cause.

  • Upgraded to Vista and kept iTunes Library on 2nd drive - how to retrieve?

Hi, I hope somebody can help!
I upgraded to Vista and at the same time installed a 2nd hard drive onto my PC. This has become the C drive and the new D drive is actually the former C one (i.e. before the upgrade). This is where my iTunes Library files are.
My question is, how can I import this folder into the new iTunes installation i have just done in a way which recognises my playlists, podcasts and purchased content??
    All help greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks!!

It may not be that simple... in Vista, the file path would be different.
You can try importing your library file:
    Launch iTunes
    Click File > Import
    Navigate to D:\...\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml
Select the iTunes Music Library file and import
I'm thinking in this case you may see your playlist data, but probably no audio files themselves.
You can add these to the library by clicking File > Add Folder to Library
    Navigate to D:\...\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\
Select the iTunes Music folder and add it
    http://lifehacker.com/software/itunes/geek-to-live--how-to-move-an-itunes-librar y-from-a-pc-to-mac-and-back-242468.php
That link explains the conversion of the library file from PC to Mac, but from XP to Vista is the same concept. Essentially, you'd need to find and replace the file path from
    C:\Documents & Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\
    to
    D:\Users\username\Documents\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\
(these folders may still be "my documents" and "my music" depending on which edition of Vista you have)
    Hope this is helpful

  • Can bootcamp use a pre-existing windows 2nd drive?

On Leopard using 2008 mac pro with leopard on a single hard drive, can I place a 2nd hard drive with a pre existing windows vista partition (from a windows computer) on it and get it to be accessible in bootcamp? If so can it be NTFS or does it have to be Fat32.
Also, regardless of the above, can the bootcamp windows installation drive have more tha one partition that windows uses? for instance I would have 1 drive for Leopard with a single partition; one drive for windows with multiple partitions (one for windows as c:; one for windows programs, and one for windows games all accesible to the windows booting environment)
And lastly, can fusion be made to work with this new "bootcamp" window installation once it is already functional in bootcamp?
    Thanks.

You will have to reformat the drive as follows:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.

  • Toshiba Qosmio x770 - there is no SATA connector in the 2nd drive bay.

I called Toshiba tech support and spoke with shekinah in the phillipines about this issue.  She told me the same thing 5 times over and over in the span of the 2 hour call. I asked to talk to her supervisor or the "lead tech" she kept talking about.  She flat out refused.  She kept telling me that I just need to plug in a 2nd hard drive.  I explained again that this is impossible as there is no cable of any kind or an sata connector.  With the x505 version you needed to purchase a seperate 2nd hard drive cage but the sata connector was there. There is a picture attached that shows what I mean.  I looks like the part is a tiny laptop ribbon cable that would connect above the primary hard drive and then terminate at an sata connector that you screw down right before the primary hard drive.  Looks like there might be some sort of hard drive cage required for it too.
Is there a way to purchase just the ribbon cable and sata adapter so I can add my own 2nd hard drive???
I would be willing to buy a 2nd hard drive with an included cable/sata adapter if it's not insanley expensive.  I would obviously rather not do this.
There is no email that I can find for toshiba tech support and the phillipens call center is not worth calling.

  • Vista Ultimate on partitioned drive w Mac os works if vista on 2nd drive

yes that's how it is with my macpro.. a few months ago i had raid card so i had to install vista on separate drive which was placed in spare optical bay and hooked up via ipass to sata cable...i soon gave up on this cuz i wanted 2nd optical drive but i kept vista on the drive...now i have gotten rid of raid card and by accident was able to install vista on partition with mac os...but only with original vista drive in one of the bays... if i remove that drive and try to boot windows i get a "disc error" message and have to close...it's a real pain cuz i only have 4 drive bays and and vista is on a 250gb..drive...i imagine there is a boot initiation process that is buried in bios somewhere...does anyone know if i can make partioned vista boot without other drive in bay??

hi all...i just fixed it!! i noticed the partitioned drive didn't appear on mac desktop but the other boot drive did...so i ran disk utility and it showed it as not having a valid boot feature...so i booted w win disk, let it load and selected repair...i did this b4 with no luck but this time it came up with indication that "boot manager" was corrupt or missing...so i let it repair and now it works w out help from original boot drive...at least for now
