Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 (& other 1TB drives) for my Early 2005 Power Mac G5

Hello there:
Like everyone and there grandmother I want a terrabyte drive! But I'm a little concerned.
The Power Mac G5 only supports the first SATA spec (1.5 Gb/s) and all the of the new drives being sold these days are of the SATA II spec (3.0 Gb/s) and use NCQ or TCQ technologies.
I’m really trying to avoid having to install a host bus adapter of any sort to use my new drive(s).
I would like to here from G5 mac users that have installed these drives or other terrabyte drives:
Did you have performance problems, did you have to do “special stuff” to get them to work???
Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 1TB (HDS721010KLA330) - from what I’ve read this drive does not auto-negotiate to the slower SATA I spec and you have to do something to the firmware in Windows- scarry!
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB (ST31000340AS)- users of other seagate products have reported a stiff performance penalty when installed in Power Mac G5
And while I’m at I like to here about experiences with the Samsung HD103UJ- I hear lots DOA drives but when these do work their faster that Raptors and that’s super fast!!!
Hopefully my trepidation is unfounded. I just don’t want computer drama... that’s for Windows users ;op
Thanks,
Mike Diaz

Hi-
Welcome to Discussions!
A good place to check on drives, is the Drive Compatibility Data base at Xlr8yourmac.
The Hitachi is reported to be a great drive in the G5, and I have heard/read nothing of this so called "do something to the firmware in Windows" stuff. Mike, the main man at Xlr8 speaks very highly of the Hitachi in his G5.
Another drive that gets great reviews is the Western Digital SE16, and RE2 series. The Green Power also shows to be an excellent drive....
Here's how the "big boys" stack up in a MacPro, tests run by Barefeats, an excellent source on Mac performance related topics. This article tests various drives in the G5.
This article compares the Hitachi, Samsung and WD GP drives.

    Hello,
It looks like Agilent/HP makes the 8990A, but I was not able to find a driver for it that we or Agilent has written for this device.
Since I am not familiar with the 8990A, I cannot recommend which drivers might be similar, but you are pointed in the right direction. Agilent themselves might know more about which models use similar command sets so that you can modify a driver easily.
    Hope this helps.

  • Error deploying JDBC driver for SQL Server 2005

    Hi all
I'm trying to deploy a JDBC driver for MS SQL Server 2005 (downloaded [here|http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C47053EB-3B64-4794-950D-81E1EC91C1BA&displaylang=en]). When I try to deploy it according to the instructions found [here|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nwce10/helpdata/en/51/735d4217139041e10000000a1550b0/frameset.htm] it fails.
The error in the logs doesn't give any useful information though. It only says Error occurred while deploying component ".\temp\dbpool\MSSQL2005.sda".
Has anyone else deployed a driver for SQL Server 2005, or perhaps have any suggestions of what else I could try?
    Thanks
    Stuart

    Hi Vladimir
That's excellent news! Thanks for the effort you've put into this. I'm very impressed with how seriously these issues are dealt with, specifically within the Java EE aspects of SAP.
May I make two suggestions on this topic:
    1. Given that NWA has such granular security permissions, please could the security error be shown when it is raised? This would help immediately identify that the problem isn't actually a product error, but rather a missing security permission (and thus save us time and reduce your support calls).
    2. Please could the role permissions be clearly documented (perhaps they already are, and I just couldn't find the docs?) so we know what is and isn't included in the role. The name is very misleading, as a "superadmin" is generally understood to have no limitation on their rights - so clear documentation on what is in-/excluded would be most helpful.
On a related topic, I came across another issue like this that may warrant your attention (while you're already looking into NWA security issues). I logged a support query about it (ref: 0120025231 0000753421 2008) in case you can retrieve details there (screenshots, logs, etc.). It's basically a similar security constraint when trying to create a Destination. I'm not sure if this is something you would like to include as standard permissions within the NWA_SUPERADMIN role or not, but I think it's worth consideration.
    Thanks again for your help!
    Cheers
    Stuart

  • Newly installed Hard Drives not recognized on Destop Power Mac G5

I am trying to replace the old internal Hard drive (160GB) on my desktop Power Mac G5 with a 320 GB and an additional 500 GB internal Hard drives. I installed them both with no problems, but when I got to install the OS (10.4.6) the new hard drives do not show as options for install. I looked in Disk Utility as well but just shows the CD/DVD drive with the OS disk.
    advice?

I believe so, The drives are:
    - Western Digital Caviar 500GB Serial ATA  7200/32MB/SATA-6G
    and
    - Western Digital Caviar 320GB SATA-3G  7200/16MB/SATA-6G
How do I know if they "need a jumper on pins 5&6 to slow them to SATA 1 speeds."
    Thanks

  • Why won't a 2TB W.D. Black Drive Work in my G5 Power Mac?

Why won't a 2TB W.D. Black Drive Work in my G5 Power Mac?
It's a  Western Digital 2 TB Caviar Black SATA III    WD2002FAE
My G5 Power Mac can not "see" this new drive.   As a test, I installed this drive in my Intel Mac Pro and it works perfectly.
On the back of the drive their Pins where one can install a jumper.  Western Digital provided no jumpers.
    Suggestions appreciated.

It's the SATA speed, G5's only deal with Sata I/1.5GB/s, try a jumper on pins 5 & 6 to slow it down... and if you made it GUID on the Mac Pro the G5 won't see it on the Desktop, but Disk Utility might see it & let you Partition it APM.
But I still don't know if the SATA 6.0Gb/s drive will slow to only SATA2, or what, at one time OWC had a warning that the 64MB Caxhe WD models wouldn't work on G5s, but I no longer find that...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD2002FAEX/
This drive is SATA 6G (3G/1.5G Compatible) ...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Hitachi/0F12115/
But may depend on the Mac's HW/SW to detect/tell the drive what speed it can handle.

  • HT1305 how can i turn down the fan rpm that's between the optical drive and hdd in my power mac g5 dual 2.3?

how can i turn down the fan rpm that's between the optical drive and hdd in my power mac g5 dual 2.3?

Ok, I saw that error in your logic. A Dual G5 2.3 or even a Dual Core 2.3 does NOT use LCS at all. Its air cooled and if anything if the OP is experiencing this problems could be due to possible heatsink paste drying up. He might have to re-apply MX 7 or Arctic Silver.
The only G5's that use LCS are: G5 dual 2.5 from Late 2004, the G5 Dual 2.7 from Early 2005, and lastly the G5 Quad-Core from Late 2005-end of September 2006.
    Hope this helps.

  • Airport card installation for 2005 Power Mac G5

OK guys, I'm trying to get an airport card to work on my 2005 Power Mac G5. Here's the relevant info:
Power Mac G5 running on Mac OS X 10.4.11
Machine model: PowerMac7,3 (so this would be "early 2005" I guess?)
Airport card: M8881LL/A AirPort Extreme Card
I installed the card as described from the Apple Support site. It seemed to go in fine and I did hook up the antenna wire to the card and an actual antenna is attached to the back of the computer.
When I fired it back up, the computer still can't find the AirPort card. If I open AirPort Setup Assistant (from utilities) it says Airport hardware was not found.
Any chance there is some kind of driver or other missing software I need? Any suggestions?

  • Should I combine two 1Tb drives into one logical 2Tb drive or use one 1Tb drive for system/apps and move /users to the other 1Tb drive?  (I'd like ease of b/u too.)

    Hello,
I have two 1Tb drives in my Mini, the first is full and the second one empty.  (I've been using the 2nd for Time Machine but the full source from dirve 1 soon has Time Machine complaining.)  I am contemplating whether to form one 2Tb logical drive from the two 1Tb drives or segregate their use, i.e. use the first 1Tb drive to hold the system and applications while moving the /users directory tree to the second 1Tb drive?
I'm assuming both are straight forward to do accomplish but have nagging doubts about segregating drive usage, will moving the /users directory tree to the second 1Tb drive:
    impact apps which might otherwise expect to see particulat fies and directories in specific user related locations on the system drive;
hinder backing up (by having to setup two separate Time Machine activities)?
Finally, is there a better 3rt option?
    Thanks,

    Thanks and sorry Allan,
The supplementary questions would arise should I NOT chose to combine the separate drives into a larger logical one but to keep one of the two drives for system/apps and the other for users data...  I assumed that segregating drive usagel like this might reult in issues with apps which might expect to see some user directories/files on the same drive as the system/apps.  similarly, with two physical drives, I'd be looking to managing separate Time Mchines.  (I have a few 2Tb pocket drives for backups.)
Final question - if I do combine into a single logical drive (for system, apps, /users ... the whole lot), would I have any problem getting this logical one working from a Time Machine backup?  I ask that this backup was taken from the 1Tb physical drive and now I'd be looking to put it back onto a 2Tb logicl drive.
    Thanks,

  • I have bought a Seagate Backup Plus 1TB drive, first time I have selected Mac Windows option which excludes Time Machine to work on it, but now I want to go back and select Only Mac option to activate my Time Machine application. I request you to help me

I have bought a Seagate Backup Plus 1TB drive, first time during plug-in, I have selected Mac Windows option which excludes Time Machine to work on it, but now I want to go back and select Only Mac option to activate my Time Machine application.
I request you to help me with the procedure of the same?

IMPORTANT - This will reformat your Seagate drive and hence wipe it.  If there is anything on your Seagate drive you want to keep, save it somewhere else FIRST.
    Plug the drive in.
In Finder select Applications > Utilities > Disc Utilities.
Select the external drive, select Partition option, give it a name (I call mine Mac Backup), select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the Format and under the drop down menu "Partition Layout" select the number of partitions you want (so if you want the drive to just be for Time Machine, select 1 Partition, if you want part of the drive to be for Time Machine and the rest for something else, select 2 partitions and so on).  Click apply and the Disc Utility will partition and reformat your drive ready to use.
When this is complete, open Time Machine in System Preferences. Use  Select Disc to select the drive (or if you have multiple partitions, the partition of the drive) you want and you are good to go.
This may be a long way round, but it gives you the option to partition your disc which you may want.

  • Unable to install a software driver for Canon film scanner on mac OSX 10.6

I am unable to install a software driver for a Canon film scanner FS4000US. I have downloaded it from Canon then open the package click the install and it asks for a location namely the Applications folder. Then it says it has been installed re -start etc, but still no driver.
I am using Mac OS 10.6. Any suggestions greatly received. I have repaired/disk and permissions and it still does not work.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list. Post the messages from the last installation attempt, starting from the time when you launched the Installer or Software Update.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • How do I install the jdbc driver for sql server 2005, in sql developer 4.0 ?

    Hallo together
I need access to tables in a MS SQL Server 2005 database.
One possibility is the JDBC driver.
How do i install this driver ?
Thank you very much for your postings.

    Hi,
This is from the documentation -
    Database: Third Party JDBC Drivers
The Third Party JDBC Drivers pane specifies drivers to be used for connections to third-party (non-Oracle) databases, such as IBM DB2, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, or Sybase Adaptive Server. (You do not need to add a driver for connections to Microsoft Access databases.) To add a driver, click Add Entry and select the path for the driver:
For Microsoft SQL Server or Sybase Adaptive Server: jtds-1.2.jar, which is included in the jtds-1.2-dist.zip download
To find a specific third-party JDBC driver, see the appropriate website (for example, http://www.mysql.com for the MySQL Connector/J JDBC driver for MySQL, http://jtds.sourceforge.net/ for the jTDS driver for Microsoft SQL Server and Sybase Adaptive Server, or search at http://www.teradata.com/ for the JDBC driver for Teradata). For MySQL, use the MySQL 5.0 driver, not 5.1 or later, with SQL Developer release 1.5.
You must specify a third-party JDBC driver or install a driver using the Check for Updates feature before you can create a database connection to a third-party database of that associated type. (See the tabs for creating connections to third-party databases in the Create/Edit/Select Database Connection dialog box.)
    Alternative:
As an alternative to using this preference, you can click Help, then Check for Updates to install the JTDS JDBC Driver for Microsoft SQL Server and the MySQL JDBE Driver as extensions.
    Regards,
    Mike
