Hitachi Travelstar 100GB 7200 RPM

Hi.
I'm replacing the HD in my 12" Power Book G4. 867 processor
machine model: Powerbook 6,1
CPU: Power PC G4 (3.3)
Swapping out a broken Toshiba 55.89 GB drive.
I'd like to buy the Hitachi Travelstar 7k100
7200 Rpm ATA-6
Will it work with my machine?
Thanks
D

Yes. Good choice, it performs well:

This 7200rpm will not have a dramatic impact on battery life above a 5400rpm drive.

  • Problems with "non-Apple" Hitachi 100GB/7200 RPM internal drives?

I bought a Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 drive from a third-party vendor and had it installed in my 15" PBG4, which promptly began kernel-panicking when coming out of sleep. Pulled the Travelstar and reinstalled the original 60GB drive, and the kernel panics have stopped (up to this point, anyway). Has anyone else had (or heard of) any problems with the 7K100 drives and the 15" PowerBooks, or have I just run into an odd quirk?

The Hitachi drive should work in your machine. I know at least one person who has a 100GB 7K100 working happily––even after dropping his PB on a marble floor recently....
Something particular to your machine or to the drive's installation caused the kernel panics, I'd say.

  • G-tech G-drive mini 100gb 72 versus LaCie 100gb 7200 RPM Rugged all-terrain

I am deciding between the above two 100GB 7200RPM Bus powered FireWire drives for video (HDV/DVCPRO) editing. While G-tech seems to have a better rep on this board, the LaCie has a FW800 connection, while the G-tech only has the FW400 connection. Is this important? Will I notice the difference in not having a FW800 connection?

I recieved the LaCie 160GB (granted only at 5400rpm) from a client to use as a transfer drive. I finished a 1 hour how-to vid shot on Pana P2 DVCProHD and this drive worked pretty well. Only when trying to do 3 or more tracks did it start to burp a little. But it could have been the laptop I was editing on. But even over FW400, it held up pretty well.
On my drive, FW800 offers a little speed advantage, but it all has to do with the rpms. I would have loved to get a g-tech drive, but the client bought this one for the project and I am happy. I am also a FCP Trainer and I use it when I travel to sites as my main data drive. Even after quite abit of rough and tumble handling, no problems.
But was orange the only option for a color? Can't lose it though.

  • Seagate momentus 100gb vs. hitachi travelstar 100gb

I'm looking to upgrade my 60gb 7200rpm HD in my powerbook to a 100gb, 7200rpm drive. after searching online, i've found the hitachi drive as cheap as $208US and the seagate as cheap as $297US.
according to the data sheets i've downloaded from both drives, the specs are very similar. i currently have a hitachi 60gb and has been rock solid for almost 2 years. if you were to decide, NOT factoring in price, which drive would you choose?
    thanks everyone.

Stick with the devil you know and also see if they have been launched as I have looked also a few days ago and some of them was not yet on the market.
Only Mce was on the market at that time, but I do not know Mce products as to reliability or quality.

  • Hitachi or Seagate 7200 rpm 500 gb ??

    Hi,
My hd apparently died yesterday as it is not booting.. I was planning to upgrade the stock 200 gb Fujitsu hd anyway and now its the time seems.
Between the Hitachi and Seagate 500gb 7200rpm, which one would you guys recommend speed & silence vise ??
    tks..

is there different versions of this hd that I should be noted ??
Yes, but I would order this model. I think the other one had a G at the end of the model number--something to do with the motion sensor.

  • Installing New Hitachi 60 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive!!!! HELP!!!!

Hello i am installing the above hardrive into my powerbook G4 12" Aluminum. Does anyone know if there is any additionaly parts or compatability parts i may need, or is it just plug in the new hardrive as easy as the old one popped out? Thanks

I would strongly advise to get the drive installed by a technician. This hasn't to be necessarily an Apple guy, of course.
Not quite. If the PowerBook is still under warranty then a hard drive replacement, which is not deemed to be a user-replaceable component by Apple, will invalidate any remaining warranty.
If no warranty remains then, of course, it's not a problem but an Apple Authorised Service Provider will have more experience of such tasks than a 'generic' computer service centre - thus less chance of something going badly wrong.
As an extra note of caution - there have been plenty of people who have attempted their own hard drive replacement only to cause much more expensive damage to the logic board, which can happen quite easily when detaching the data cable. Too much force and it's even possible to tear off a piece of the logic board.

  • 7200 RPM drive versus 5400 RPM drives

I'm about to invest in my next laptop and have the following impressions:
7200 is generally faster for sustained reads/writes and seeks.
7200 uses marginally more power (0.5 watts) - but is not going to be noticable in terms of heat or battery life (spin down, CPU, lighting are the big draws I presume there)
What I haven't seen is any comment on noise levels. Has anyone experience or data from the OEM to compare noise levels/frequencies for whatever drives Apple seems to ship these days?
    Thanks!

Hi, don't know if this will really answer your question but my new MBP just arrived Monday with a 100GB, 7200 RPM drive. I definitely notice the improvement in access time. Noise? I cannot tell the difference, its as quiet as a mouse. Drawing a bit more power but it is negligble. If you can swing it, I would recommend the 7200...Too bad you can't order it in a larger drive size though. 120 would have been nice

  • Hitachi Travelstar 7K200series - 100GB/200GB the fastest?

Been looking to upgrade to a 7200 RPM drive. I was looking at the specs, and the Travelstar 7200 RPM drives seem to be among the fastest 2.5 drives on the market. However - when checking the datasheet, it mentions that the 100GB and 200GB versions have the highest areal density (bits per unit area) at 164 Gbit/sqin while the 80/120/160 GB versions are 132. This seems to translate directly into a media transfer rate of 876 Mbit/sec compared to 695 MBit/sec. I'm pretty sure that the transfer rate is slower than the SATA150 interface is capable of handling.

Does this really make a difference? I do a small amount of storage on my internal drive - mostly PDFs, ripped music, and some data. Of course program files would go on my HD. Altogether I use less than half my MacBook's 120 GB drive capacity. I do most of my storage (photos, etc) to at least two external drives.
Anyone have an idea if it would make sense to get the 100 GB version simply based on the increased speed? I don't anticipate needing the 200 GB version, as it costs more than twice the price from Newegg.

  • Hitachi 7K200 200 GB 7200 RPM Macbook Pro C2D

I recently installed a 7K200 200 GB 7200 RPM 16 MB Buffer, into my Macbook Pro (15", C2D, 2.16) and I noticed vibrations on my left palm. The vibrations are very noticeable when I am on the computer. The stock drive was silent and I did not feel any vibrations. Do you feel this vibration on your left palm as well? Is this normal or do you think that it has to do something with the drive? I am quite sure that I installed the drive correctly. Thanks for your input.

As kappy mentions, be sure you replaced the drive correctly with all the rubber dampeners etc. It is possible you have a bad drive as well. My Hitachi 200GB 7200rpm drive does not vibrate.

  • Hitachi Travelstar HD always spinning?

After following some advice from here, and reading many past threads, I installed a new Hitach Travelstar 7200rpm 100Gb HD into my Ti. The installation was a little fiddly but I got there in the end.
Since I installed it ive noticed a constant "spinning fan" noise coming from beneath the trackpad area, which is where the drive's located.
Is the constant "fan like" noise normal operation?
Everynow and then i'll hear louder "scratching" noises which from my understanding is normal HD operation, but the "fan like" noise concerns me.
Only I never noticed such a constant noise from my old 4400rpm drive.
    Powerbook Ti 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I similarly recently installed a 60 GB Hitachi Travelstar 7200 rpm in my TiPB 867 replacing the original 40 GB 4200 rpm drive.
That spinning "fan like" noise you hear is normal, It is the drive itself. I had the noise with my 4200 drive and it took me quite a while to realise that the noise was not the fan at low speed. If the noise seems louder then it is because the drive is spinning much faster. When the fan(s) come on you will notice the noise difference. Actually I am now not sure of the speed advantage of 7200 v 4200/5400 because the fan(s) come on earlier than they used to, which is of course quite normal. I know the fans have no effect on the drive speed but it just seems to somewhat negate the speed increase when the fans come on earlier. And I suspect that the "average" home user can not really tell the difference between 5400 and 7200 rpm. Certainly more modern PBs than ours are better designed to handle higher speed drives.
The way to tell if the noise is your drive is to spin down the drive either thru the Energy Saver prefs or the Terminal commands without the PB going into deep sleep.

  • 7200RPM 200GB Hitachi Travelstar

    Hey there
    I'm new to this forum...
Has anyone tried the 7200RPM 200GB Hitachi Travelstar in the 12" Powerbook..
After 5 years of very happy computing, I am upgrading my poor battered laptop.. It now has the max ram and I want to speed up the drive.. I have read about the heat and battery issues but will try it anyway..
    Cool forum BTW
    Billy

Unless I am mistaken, Hitachi's 2.5" 7200 RPM 200GB Travelstar is a Serial ATA drive, which is not compatible with any PowerBook since they use Parallel ATA (aka IDE).
The largest compatible 7200RPM drive currently available is the 100GB Travelstar. However, if you want the capacity, then Western Digital's 250GB 5400RPM Scorpio is the largest you can get, and the speed isn't too bad. Other good but less capacious alternatives are the 5400RPM 160GB offerings from Hitachi and Seagate.
Unless you are doing highly disk intensive work, the speed difference between 5400RPM and 7200RPM should be hardly noticeable in day-to-day usage.

  • 7200 rpm disk in MacBook?

    Hi,
at AppleStore it says that you can invidualize your MacBook with a faster hard drive for better performance, but there are no option to choose anything faster than 5400 rpm, only different sizes or solid state. Is it or isn't it possible to get a MacBook with a 7200 rpm disk? Or do I have to get the slower one and then replace it afterwards?
    Thanks...

Can you give me an idea what difference it makes in terms of battery life compared to the standard 5400 rpm HDDs?
Not likely to be that much different. The power draw from plugging in a USB flash drive is likely to be more than the difference between most 7200 and 5400 hard drives. It is highly dependent on the particular drive though. There are always manufacturing variations that can affect heat and power consumption. Some hard drives are also notorious for having great datasheet specs for power consumption, but in the real world they draw more power.
I haven't had any heat problems with my Hitachi Travelstar 7K200. I have heard of some issues with the newer Travelstar 7K320 though. It's supposed to have lower power consumption and heat draw, but perhaps that's a case where the datasheet is rather optimistic. I'd think the speed is probably top of the line with that drive.
If you want something that draws almost no power, try a solid-state drive. Pricey, but something like an Intel X25-M only draws 0.15 watt in full operation. That's less than a 5400 RPM drive in idle.

  • 5400 / 7200 RPM. How To Check That?

    hi guys.
the box with a brand new external usb drive i am planning to purchase from my local computer store doesn't say whether it's as fast as 5400 or 7200 rpm.
how do i normally check that parameter through my computer? i tried checking that on my current usb drive with system profiler, but can't see such a section anywhere!

    Aram Rian wrote:
    thanks for the reply.
hmm, well i still need to somehow make sure the rotation speed of the usb hard drive i am going to purchase is 7200 rpm
I don't think it really matters from a practical point of view. The maximum sustained transfer speeds you can get out of Hi-Speed USB (USB2) is about 30-35 MB/sec. This is well under the speeds that most current 5400 RPM notebook drives are capable of. For example, a Hitachi Travelstar 5K320 drive is capable of up to 729 Mbit/sec, which is higher than 90 MB/sec.

  • Question for folks using 7200 rpm drives

Hi, for anyone here using a 7200 RPM drive in their macbook, can you post your experience regarding vibration felt on the palmrest and also what brand drive you have.
I just installed a WD Scorpio Black (320GB 7200) and it produces enough vibration on the palmrest to be annoying. The stock Fujitsu produces absolutely none. I am going to return the WD and either get a different brand, or get a 5400 RPM.
    Thanks for any feedback.

Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 200GB. I've had it since last January. Never a noticeable vibration, although the sound of the bearings/platters spinning seems to have increased recently. I don't find that unusual since that's typical for any hard drive.
The hard drives don't typically produce noticeable vibration unless they're loose. Have you checked to see that it's secure in the drive bay? I've heard that sometimes the little shock-absorbing "bumpers rails" in there can get dislodged in the installation process.

  • 7200 rpm HDD Choice

Hi, I recently puchased a PB G4 12 1.5Ghz, and I am thinking of upgrading the HDD from the current 80GB to a 100GB RPM.
My question: Does the Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 fit my powerbook?
if it fits, is this HDD a reliable one? or if there are any better alternatives that you would recommend?
Thanks a lot for any helps
    regards

OWC has a good selection of drive that fit PBs at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ Look down the left side of the page, as arnie mentioned, your PB can't use an SATA drive, which are used in Apple's Intel-based machines. OWC ships internationally, however, you can probably find your choice of drive locally in UK, too.
If warranty coverage is a consideration, Seagate drives offer a 5 year warranty, and most others offer a 3 year warranty.
As mentioned, regular backup is essential. Some take the working drives out of their notebooks, and put them into an external enclosure when they upgrade their hard drives, and use it for backup.
If you scan these discussions, you'll find several who have the Hitatchi 7200rpm drives and seem pleased with them.
