Hitachi Travelstar HD always spinning?

After following some advice from here, and reading many past threads, I installed a new Hitach Travelstar 7200rpm 100Gb HD into my Ti. The installation was a little fiddly but I got there in the end.
Since I installed it ive noticed a constant "spinning fan" noise coming from beneath the trackpad area, which is where the drive's located.
Is the constant "fan like" noise normal operation?
Everynow and then i'll hear louder "scratching" noises which from my understanding is normal HD operation, but the "fan like" noise concerns me.
Only I never noticed such a constant noise from my old 4400rpm drive.
Powerbook Ti 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I similarly recently installed a 60 GB Hitachi Travelstar 7200 rpm in my TiPB 867 replacing the original 40 GB 4200 rpm drive.
That spinning "fan like" noise you hear is normal, It is the drive itself. I had the noise with my 4200 drive and it took me quite a while to realise that the noise was not the fan at low speed. If the noise seems louder then it is because the drive is spinning much faster. When the fan(s) come on you will notice the noise difference. Actually I am now not sure of the speed advantage of 7200 v 4200/5400 because the fan(s) come on earlier than they used to, which is of course quite normal. I know the fans have no effect on the drive speed but it just seems to somewhat negate the speed increase when the fans come on earlier. And I suspect that the "average" home user can not really tell the difference between 5400 and 7200 rpm. Certainly more modern PBs than ours are better designed to handle higher speed drives.
The way to tell if the noise is your drive is to spin down the drive either thru the Energy Saver prefs or the Terminal commands without the PB going into deep sleep.

  • Windows 7 won't install on MBP with Hitachi Travelstar (bootcamp)

Hi, I recently upgraded the hard drive in my mid-2009 2.53 15" to a Hitachi Travelstar 7k500. When working in OS X the hard drive is awesome but I have been having problems with installing Windows 7 under bootcamp in Snow Leopard or Lion. I have tried (a lot) to install windows using both 32 and 64 bit versions from original discs. When installing it appears as though it has installed and on restart I get a variety of different errors each time I have tried to install. I either get NLS data not found, kernel missing or an error occurred.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing these problems? Is anyone using this hard drive with bootcamp? I have tried reinstalling OS X and tried bootcamp with Snow Leopard and Lion.
    Thank you
    Alex

  • External hard drives always spinning....is this normal?

I have a few external hard drives for my Mac Pro, a couple Weibetech 1TB drives, and a Drobo device that I just got to work as a backup. I just switched to this Mac Pro from a Macbook, and I am noticing my external drives are always spinning, and sometimes get pretty warm. Is this normal? The drobo's fan has been on all day, and I am not using it for anything. Is this normal?
Also, if the drives are not spun up, I notice that when I do certain things, my computer spins all my drives up, and wheel spins, even if what I am doing has nothing to do with that drive. I would think that the computer would wait until you tried to access the drive to spin it up.

I've seen the useless spinup of external drives accompanied by the spinning beachball too.
It usually happens when Finder or Spotlight are started/accessed/used. (for example, I press cmd+space to open spotlight, then I have to wait for my external drives to complete spinup before I can do anything... it just sits there, showing me a spinning beachball...)
I worked around this by telling Spotlight not to index my external drives, but now I can't use Spotlight for searching files on these drives...
Let's hope this is handled better in SL...
As to why they're sometimes on all day and sometimes not, no idea. Try the free application "What's Keeping Me?" to see if there is any process still attached to a file on that drive. Perhaps some process is keeping OSX from putting these drives to sleep...

  • Hitachi Travelstar 100GB 7200 RPM

    Hi.
I'm replacing the HD in my 12" Power Book G4. 867 processor
    machine model: Powerbook 6,1
    CPU: Power PC G4 (3.3)
Swapping out a broken Toshiba 55.89 GB drive.
I'd like to buy the Hitachi Travelstar 7k100
    7200 Rpm ATA-6
Will it work with my machine?
    Thanks
    D

Yes. Good choice, it performs well:

This 7200rpm will not have a dramatic impact on battery life above a 5400rpm drive.

  • ERROR 2010 when installing Hitachi Travelstar 160 GB Hard Disk

    I have just purchased a Hitachi  Travelstar 5K160 160GB 2.5"  Hard drive
I have it installed in a Lenovo T43 Laptop and I get the following error from the BIOS
    ERROR 2010
The Hard drisk drive that you have installed has not been qualified for use in this computer or does not have
    latest firmware
It allows me to continue <ESC>
I have formated the disk and installed the Fedora OS and everything is fine
1:  Do you know what is causing this and how do I fix it
    or
2: How do I turn off the error message ?

There is a firmware update utility on the Lenovo Support and downloads site you mite try. I have 2 Hitachi HDD's in my machine one of which needed the firmware update. It worked for me.
    Cheers,

  • Recently installed a 1TB hitachi travelstar hard drive into my Macbook 10.6.8  however Time Machine says not configured hence cannot back anything up

Recently installed a 1TB Hitachi travelstar hard drive into my Macbook (13inch mid 2010) OS X 10.6.8 .
However now having problems with configuring , latest issue my Time Machine says Not Configured hence cannot back up using this device !
    Can anyone help ?

You installed the new hdd with new install of Mac OS .. or did you recover your old TM setup??
If TM cannot locate the Time Capsule .. is it visible in airport utility or finder??
Are you even using a TC?? If you are using an external drive you need to spell it all out.
Time Machine may not recognise the old backup.. you can usually inherit the old one.
    See B5 and B6 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Otherwise use A4.. delete the existing TM setup and reconfigure it from scratch. If you do that TM should discover and reuse the old backups if possible.. but a new hard disk might not be possible it may need to start over.

  • 7200RPM 200GB Hitachi Travelstar

    Hey there
    I'm new to this forum...
Has anyone tried the 7200RPM 200GB Hitachi Travelstar in the 12" Powerbook..
After 5 years of very happy computing, I am upgrading my poor battered laptop.. It now has the max ram and I want to speed up the drive.. I have read about the heat and battery issues but will try it anyway..
    Cool forum BTW
    Billy

Unless I am mistaken, Hitachi's 2.5" 7200 RPM 200GB Travelstar is a Serial ATA drive, which is not compatible with any PowerBook since they use Parallel ATA (aka IDE).
The largest compatible 7200RPM drive currently available is the 100GB Travelstar. However, if you want the capacity, then Western Digital's 250GB 5400RPM Scorpio is the largest you can get, and the speed isn't too bad. Other good but less capacious alternatives are the 5400RPM 160GB offerings from Hitachi and Seagate.
Unless you are doing highly disk intensive work, the speed difference between 5400RPM and 7200RPM should be hardly noticeable in day-to-day usage.

  • Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 question

    Hello,
I got my new MacBook today.... (its perfect)... no cow related issue etc.
    I put my 2Gb Ram in... Champion... but I looked at the 7200 HD I bought, the following;
    Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 100gb Ata6 2.5in 7200rpm 8mb
And the there are pins at the bottom, which looks very different to the bottom of the 60Gb HD that I took out.
I'm not sure what is going on... I din't try to install the HD yet, I thought I better double check here 1st.
    Any suggestions?

Basically you bought the wrong model drive. You should have purchased an SATA version.

  • Hitachi TRAVELSTAR or Seagate MOMENTUS? need a 7200rpm 100 gb internal HD

i think the title sums it up, i need a 7200rpm 100 gb HD for some music editing and cpu intensive tasks. i dont want to tie up my firewire or usb port yet as i have other uses for them (midi keyboard, license key, audio i/o). now i'm looking at the Hitachi TRAVELSTAR and the Seagate MOMENTUS. done a little research and read that the Hitachi is slightly faster but runs slightly warmer and can be noiser. anyone whos updated their internal HD have any opinons, recommendations or general ideas or suggestions to add?

Was in the same position as you about a week ago. Spent a whole day researching which one was better and still didnt know which one to decide! lol... have you checked out this review:
    http://www.techreport.com/reviews/2006q1/mobile-hdds/index.x
its a very detailed report on both drives. both drives are actually very good, from this review i chose seagate in the end cos it is meant to be quieter and also performs very well. however when i did get my drive it vibrates ALOT, the whole keyboard area was shaking and seeking was loud! this is meant to be common-ish bcos of the 7200rpm but a quick email to seagate and they replaced my drive straight away.
    seagate has 5 yrs warranty!!
    hope this helps

  • Revel on iPad always spinning

Revel on iPad always has spinning wheel, its been doing it all week, yet the photos were all uploaded to server via macbook last week.
    Is this normal ?

Yes I loaded Revel on the iPad and tried to look at photos that were loaded already from the MacBook and am able to see many of them fine. It isn't frozen, I can see many previews and some are grey sqare thumbnails, if I wait a wee while the grey theumbs become small thumb pictures and if I click one it becomes a full size photo. Some are fuzzy but if left eventually clear to a normal looking photo. If I scroll down more appear and do the same.
So it all seems to be working fine apart from the fact that the little spinning wheel thing is contunually spinning and my ISP data cap is gradually beeing chewewd away. I would have thought that maybe to upload 8000 would have taken a while, but this is going on since last week and the macbook upload of all the originals never took anything like this time.
The photos are all visble on the macbook and also on my iPod. Although I get a little spinning of the wheel on my iPod as I scroll to other photos it stops as soon as the picture appears. Unlike on the iPad which spins forever.
Oh and no I did not try to reinstall anything.
    Regards Reg

  • Why is the beach ball always spinning?

I’ve used iPhoto from when it first came out. I’ve never really had any problems until iPhoto 5. Then I seemed to get the spinning beach ball every time I used the program. Concluding that perhaps my library had got a bit complex, I decided to start a new library and import all my photos. After hours of work, it’s now spinning once again. Usually it happens when I import photos. After importing I’ve got to force quit, then open up again in order to look at what I’ve just imported. Now it’s spinning even when I swap programs. I create a new folder or album, tab to another program, tab back again and off it goes. Force quit usually seems to solve the problem, but this can’t be right. All my programs are current via software update, I’m on the latest version of Tiger, and I’m running a 17 inch PowerPC iMac, with 1GB of RAM.
Has anyone else had similar problems? Any suggestions of a cure? Is iPhoto 5 just poor? Has anyone had this problem solved by iPhoto 6? I would be tempted to upgrade, but not to endure further frustration.

    Hi wingnutt,
If your camera was one of the cameras that had the large makernote problem, then it seems that has been resolved with iPhoto 6. Read the next link and see what you think.

  • Firfox consumes lots of CPU. Hard drive is always spinning and clicking w firefox. RUNS SLOW.

Firefox is pretty much unusable early in a session. Gets better aftyer a while, say 10 minutes.

I too have a similar problem except I think mine is flash related. It's fine when just surfing and watching news/videos but when I play a flash game the hard drive starts spinning constantly and it takes minutes to switch applications or shut the game down. This usually happens at the beginning of a flash game, settles down for a while, and after 45-60 minutes it starts up again but the hard drive keeps spinning for another 15-30 minutes then settles down again for an even shorter amount of time and then repeats the cycle. It started doing this to me in firefox 6, but I've since upgraded to 7.0.1 and flash is up to date. I've run all the malware/virus checks, tested the drive, but can not find anything wrong. If I manage to get the resource monitor running, firefox plugin container usually is reading my pagefile.sys at 40-50 million bytes/min, plus a few more firefox entries running in the low millions/min. I know flash is a memory pig but I have 2 gig memory plus the virtual memory which I tried a couple of custom settings and then set back to default, with no change in performance

  • Is Hitachi travelstar external HD compatible as a Mac Startup drive?

I have downloaded SuperDuper ant the 1st thing they want me to do is be sure
my external hd can ge used as a startup Drive. Is anyone familiar with the travelstar? Will it work? It is only 100gb. Should I just us it for media data storage and just buy another larger external hd that have been recommended for the mac for cloning my hard drive as well as 2nd backup for media data?

  • Seagate momentus 100gb vs. hitachi travelstar 100gb

I'm looking to upgrade my 60gb 7200rpm HD in my powerbook to a 100gb, 7200rpm drive. after searching online, i've found the hitachi drive as cheap as $208US and the seagate as cheap as $297US.
according to the data sheets i've downloaded from both drives, the specs are very similar. i currently have a hitachi 60gb and has been rock solid for almost 2 years. if you were to decide, NOT factoring in price, which drive would you choose?
    thanks everyone.

Stick with the devil you know and also see if they have been launched as I have looked also a few days ago and some of them was not yet on the market.
Only Mce was on the market at that time, but I do not know Mce products as to reliability or quality.
