Hitachi, Western Digital or Hitachi

I want to buy me a new hard disk but which?
Hitachi : http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B003DN3A3U/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A3JWK AKR8XB7XF
Samsung : http://www.amazon.de/Samsung-HM500JJ-500GB-interne-Festplatte/dp/B0046REG5S/ref= cm_cr_pr_product_top
Western Digital : http://www.amazon.de/Western-Digital-WD3200BEKT-Scorpio-Festplatte/dp/B001CO3EKQ /ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
I hope you can help me

They all look identical to me, just different manufacturers. The WD drive is only a 320GB capacity drive, however, the other two are both 500GB. The Scorpio Black is an amazing drive, always gets great reviews and they have the best manufacturer's warranty in the business. I don't know of any manufacturer that offers a 5-year warranty on their drives.
I'm a big fan of the Hitachi drives, personally. I have numerous Travelstar drives "in service" on my own personal machines and many users that I support. I find that in the states they're $10-20 less than the comparable Scorpio Black and give identical performance.
Do you need the 500GB storage?

  • What is the best Harddrive company to install into my 2008 Macbook, Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Samsung?

The HDD in my 2008 MacBook just failed on me, and the Genius' at the store said I just need to purchase and install a new HDD and they will install Mac OS X for me for free. I was looking around and I found a few HDD but I'm not familar with Mac HDD I dont know if there is a specific company that i NEED to use, or if i can install any HDD fom any company. Obviously i know i need a 2.5" Form Factor HDD with SATA 3.0/Gbps but which company should i purchase....
    Seagte
    Hitachi
    Western Digital
    Samsung
All ive found decent sized HDD at very reasonable prices.
    Thank you for your responses

If you search through all the Mac forums on the internet you'll find that people say "Never put a (Insert name of company here) hard drive in your MacBook, only put a (Insert name of company here) drive in."
That's because every company makes drives that can fail quickly and drives that can go forever. They all try the best that they can to make a good drive.
Go with the one that has the best warranty for the price.

  • Does Western Digital make quality internal hard drives?

I'm looking to buy a larger hard drive for my MacBook (1.83GHz).
This Western Digital drive popped out to me for its price:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136071
How do Western Digital hard drives compare in quality to Seagate, Toshiba, or Hitachi?
13' MacBook, eMac, Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hello,
All hard-drives have similar technologies and your mileable may vary by a number of determining factors:
    1. Portable drives often endure extra stress by being dropped and other things.
    2. Drives life may be expanded by properly performing maintenance on the drive at regular intervals. This reduces the amount of time a query on the drive takes to execute, thus extending the life of the drive.
Most hard drives work well, however, some hard drives do not have drivers that work with some systems. Most HD's have drivers that work with a variety of systems, so this really isn't a determining factor with new computer systems. I personally have seen the best mileage however with Seagate drives in Apple devices. Western Digital does make good drives, but some of them are very noisy.

  • Replacing HDD - Western Digital or brand?

    Hi, everyone,
I'm looking at buying either a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 250GB/320GB as seen here:
    http://ncix.com/products/?sku=52149&vpn=WD3200BEVTRTL&manufacture=Western%20Digi tal%20WD
Is Western Digital a good make these days? Any recommendations would be appreciated!
    Thanks for your help.
    Wilde

    Just for example:
A Macbook Pro 20xx edition, came with 250 gb hitachi HDD. then your upgrade HDD must be hitachi brand too.
Not true at all. Any make will do, as long as it meets the specs. Don't bother to upgrade your drive unless you're going to more than double the capacity you have now — you'll just end up wanting to upgrade a gain in a year or two.
Western Digital drives are fine when used internally. Stay away from WD external drives: the enclosures are junk, saddled with lousy bridge chipsets and firmware that really gets in the way for many Mac users.

Dont buy a Western Digital, get a Hitachi or Seagate (Toshiba is made by Hitachi). These are the most reliable, and the HD used inside Macs.
ALL HD can be made compatible with your MAC (including a WD if you already bought same), ......they just need to be formatted for the Mac platform, format them in Disk Utility as Mac OSX extended journaled.

  • Want to get a new HDD - Seagate or Western Digital?

Hi everyone. My MacBook Pro's 200 GB Hitachi drive (Hitachi HTS722020K9SA00) has reached it's maximum. I'd like to swap it out for a larger disk... preferably a 500 GB 7200 RPM drive. I called a local shop that was highly recommended by the Apple store here in Atlanta and that shop recommended/carried only Seagate or Western Digital. I'm not sure what the model numbers are for the two drives but they quoted me a price of 109 USD.
Of the two drives, which would you recommend and why? The only difference I know of is that Western Digital has a 3 year warranty while the Seagate drive has a 5 year warranty.
Also, do you see any problem/reason why I should not go this route? My MacBook Pro was purchased in 2006 and is way past it's warranty at this point. I have a G-Drive Mini but don't really feel like having an external drive attached every time I use my computer (as my iTunes library is the main reason why I need the space). I'd prefer to have a larger internal disk.
Thanks for all of your help/recommendations!
    Sincerely,
    Keith

Why aren't you also considering Hitachi drives for replacements? IMO they also make great drives. I upgraded my ALPB with a 7200rpm Hitachi drives years ago, and while the PB has died, the drive is still running strong in an external enclosure. I also have an old TIPB running with a 7200rpm Seagate drive that has been going for years with no problems. Both are great. I know it's old technology as both are PATA and only 100GB, but I do recall an article where both were tested and while the Hitachi offered generally better (though minimal) transfer rates, the Seagate had the higher areal density which made for quicker access times. The Seagate was also dead silent compared to the Hitachi.
Personally, I've had poor experience with Western Digital drives over the years. Not to say they don't make a good product, but my personal experience has been less than satisfactory. Seagate drives have always worked well for me, as have Hitachi, in both 2.5" and 3.5" forms. If you are absolute in WD or Seagate, I personally would take the Seagate. Also, instead of going through your local shop, why not take a look at Newegg.com? They have a large selection of 7200rpm laptop drives and you may very well get a better price. I.E, Newegg has several Seagate Momentus 7200.4 drives (500GB) ranging from $79.99 to $99.99 and a Hitachi Tavelstar 7K500 for $84.99 (they don't seem to carry a 500GB 7200rpm WD).

  • Western Digital 80GB Portable 2.5" Passport + PBG4

I was wondering if a Western Digital 80GB Portable 2.5" Passport will work with a G4 PowerBook. As in, can I only use one USB port to power it.
I bought a LaCie Mobile Drive 80GB and found out the the 15” PB Hi Res, which I have, has less power going to the USB ports. So I have to use both USB ports to power it and it is very annoying. I know some USB harddrives have to work, like an iPod. Well im thinking of returning it for a Western Digital one but I don’t want to want to have to buy one to test if it works or not.

I've recently installed a Hitachi Travelstar 100GB 7200RPM drive into my 12" PowerBook and the difference in performance over the original Hitachi 40GB 4200RPM is very noticeable.
For example, startup now happens so quickly that I often miss it if I look away. As my primary use for the PB is iPhoto (with a library of several thousand images), scrolling through the library used to be a pain with lots of the spinning beachball but now it happens with no lag. Everything seems to happen very smoothly now. I would expect you to see similar benefits in your work.
I also have an older IBM Travelstar 60GB 5400RPM and the new 7200RPM is still noticeably quicker. However the difference compared to a comparable new 5400RPM drive may be less noticeable.
With that experience I, personally, would have no qualms in buying a 7200RPM drive (cost permitting) for my needs - but I would be a little cautious about buying an FW800-only enclosure if you are planning on upgrading in the future as the new MacBook Pro no longer has FW800.

  • Western Digital External Harddrive

Hello - I purchased a Western Digital 1 T to back up music. I've downloaded all the software updates but the screen reads - "no writable WD SmartWare Partition Found." Does anyone know how to get this WD to work? If I should post this on another discussion please let me know. Thank you. Tami Stewart

  • Western Digital Scorpio Blue 640 Drive draws too much power in a MacBookPro

I just received a Western Digital 640 gb (WD6400BEVT) Scorpio Blue Drive for my MacBookPro. I've noticed that the drives "Throttles" a lot, i.e. seems to accelerate/spin and slow down/stop in a way I've never seen in any other drive, and I've been through lots. It wouldn't be a problem if the computer didn't seem to be sluggish in response, much more sluggish than with the 200G Hitachi drive I had before. I will sometimes start typing something and the computer will be slow to react; I also see the spinning ball much more often.
I contacted WD and was told that "It is quite possible that the computer cannot manage the capacity and energy demand of this drive. If the previous drive was under 250 GB, a 640 GB drive will encounter these issues."
I'd never hear of this problem, and I'm really confused since the new drive has a lower rated energy requirement (it's a 5400 rpm vs 7200) than the previous drive. Has anyone else had these problems? Can someone tell me whether this is reality or obfuscation on the part of Western Digital?

Hi Brody - what makes you think the 640Gb isn't a 'notebook' drive? I've a 640Gb one that's been in my Macbook Pro, although now it's in my Samsung Netbook.
The unit worked perfectly fine in my late 2008 unit? It's a 9.5mm unit that as far as I know adheres to the 2.5" SATA specifications? Like I say, worked fine in mine.
This is the unit in question: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-322-WD&groupid=701&catid =14&subcat=896
    ...or full specifications here: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=683
Even WD's spec says 'Big Capacity for Mobile Computing'.
Personally I doubt whether this issue is with power - it's probably more to do with the random pausing that some machines experience with certain drives. I had it before I upgraded to an SSD back when I had a 500Gb 5400RPM Seagate Momentus for example - you can read about my experiences with there here: http://www.markc.me.uk/MarkC/Blog/Entries/2009/6/13Macbook_Pro_Hard_DiskUpgrade.html
I know that doesn't help the original poster that much unfortunately, but I don't think it's an issue with the drive being inherently incompatible with the Macbooks/Laptops as such. Saying that, the OP has a 2.33Ghz MBP and I don't think the pausing issues apply that far back, well not in the same manner anyways.

  • Mac Pro RAID Card and Western Digital drives

I'm having huge troubles with these items.
I first installed four WD7500AYYS (Raid Edition) to build a RAID 5 and install Leopard on it. At this point, one of the drives was probably DOA and didn't show up in the bay. I then reinstalled the Seagate that shipped with the machine, then proceeded to create another enhanced JBOD raid with one of the WD drives. After a couple of seconds, RAID utility reported an error (disk about to fail and such). I then tried with another one. The process ended with a kernel panic after two hours, while RAID utility was still marking the drive for enhanced JBOD. That disk never show up again, in any bay.
At this point, I'm left with two WD drives. I can't get past the creation of a RAID set with them, no matter what. Either RAID utility reports an error, or it says the disk has been ejected, or it keeps create the RAID for hours... The later usually ends with a "force quit", or a force shutdown. During these attemps, the RAID card went missing once, then it appeared again on the following reboot. The RAID battery, which was fully charged at first, is now being "repaired" (charging ?).
I then ran AHT to see whether there was something wrong. No errors reported.
Because all four drives were Raid Edition, I thought this could be the root of the problems. So I bought a Caviar SE16 (WD5000AAKS). To no avail. It fails too, in the very same way. And now it no longer appears in any bay.
The last step I took was to remove the RAID card (connecting the iPass connector to the motherboard). Out of the five WD drives, only two RE2 (the two that still show up with the RAID card) do appear in disk utility. But disk utility never ends "writing the partition map" or "preparing for initialization".
By now, I end up with five WD drives that appear to be just dead, as if they were killed by the RAID card trying to RAID them. The only drive that works, with or without the RAID card, in any bay, is the Seagate. I didn't try to fiddle with it though (I'm reluctant to format it just to see whether I can create an enhanced JBOD raid with it).
So the question is, are Western Digital drives compatible with this RAID card ? If they do, then how a RAID card can kill them in such a way while keeping the Seagate alive ?
I'm lost in conjectures. I don't even know if/how I can bring all the WD drives back to life. I'm not sure the RAID card is faulty, I've already lost a lot of time and money, I'm not willing to buy yet another drive to see it fail too, and my Mac Pro is kind of useless as I don't want to spend time on installing/configuring everything I need on a drive that is bound to be replaced by a larger RAID 5 array.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Someone yesterday or Friday, had a system with 4 x 1TB drives and Pro RAID, but in their case, it was determined later Saturday that drive bay #1 was not functioning.
Hopefully these fully retail drives, not OEMs, and I would think they are fine. They are what I would use (Sonnet Tempo only supports RE of the WD drives). Someone else, Danish?, had 3 out of 4 WD drives were DOA.
I've never had trouble buying over a dozen from OWC, so it does seem odd.
If you have SoftRAID 3.6.6 I would use that to zero the first and last 100 sectors, or you can begin to zero the whole drive and cancel at any time, just to check the health of the drive and that it can zero and not produce I/O errors.
There are two other methods for accessing and managing Mac Pro RAID, ARD and CLI
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306231
Originally, only Apple drives were supported. My understanding was that this changed. But the only article I found in KB dates back to Aug '07:
Question: What drives does Apple support with the Mac Pro RAID Card and the Xserve RAID Card?
Answer: +Only Apple drives are supported with the Mac Pro RAID Card and the Xserve RAID Card.+
My understanding that 3rd party retail drives such as WD RE2 750GB, Seagate, Hitachi were supported as well since the article was written - and I can't find where I read that, but sure that I did, as this was discussed in the past.
I'd like to find an official article. Even my friend Google was helpless

  • Western Digital or Seagate Barracuda?!

    Hi,
I would like to purchase an additional 250gb ATA drive for my 1.25ghz G4 MDD. I previously posted on here regarding the better of the two between the Seagate or Hitach drives, but I have now ruled out the Hitachi. However, I am now divided between the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 and the Western Digital Caviar SE. I would like to know peoples recommendations/experiences with these drives. It really is important that the drive is reliable, fast and also very quiet (all of which these drives claim to be). I did read a review that the Barracuda 7200.10 drive made a pecking noise when being accessed and therefore I would like to know if anyone else has noticed this.
All feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi-
The 7200.10 series has been plagued by firmware problems that can cause slow read or write speeds in a Power Mac (or Mac Pro for that matter). Though most reports concern the SATA version, I am concerned with the 7200.10 and the native controller of a Mac. If the drive were the 7200.9, then I give it 5 thumbs up...
I have a WD Caviar in a QS G4. Very nice, very quiet (virtually silent). Makes a small "click" (very small) when sleeping or shutting down, but this is due to the the automatic head park mechanism doing what it was designed to do (nice feature). I really like the drive. You may be interested in this article. The conclusion says it all.

I had a 640GB HDD in my Early 2008 Macbook and it was just too much it would always freeze up the computer a bit for only a few seconds but ya. Then I realized that it was the size of the HDD that was causing it since the Early 2008 Macbook models can only handle a MAX od 500GB while the Early 2008 Macbook Pros could have a MAX of 640GB (Lucked out there!) lol But ya the Early 2008 Mocbooks can only handle a MAX HDD size of 500GB and that's it!! lol

    And the configuration:

    IDE2: WD1800BG (Cabel Select)
IDE3(Raid1): Maxtor 6LO80J4 (Master) and Maxtor 6Y080L0 (Slave) raided as an single drive

    IDE5(IDE-controller1):
    IDE6(IDE-controller2): NEC ND-1300 (Master) and Lite-on LTR-40125W (Slave)
    And the Software:
I've updated all the software drivers so I've got the newest and I'm currently runnign Win2k SP3 with almost every patch installed on it.
    And finally the problem:
When I've hook my WD2000JB to the on-board raid everything seems to be working normaly. The bios finds the drive and makes a new array. Win2k boots up and finds the drive and I can create an partition. But when I've try to format it it the computer starts to freeze for a while and then acts like normal again. The HDD-led blinks as it should during the "normal" time, but when the comp. freezes it stops blinking. The formatation stops at 7% and the HDD-led stops lighting. I don't get an error eventhough it was several hours since it stoped. And the formatation takes like 30min for 1%.
When I connect the WD2000JB to the IDE3 I can format it and it acts just like normal. I even did a full system test with the System tool found on Western Digitals support site and it didn't find any errors. But when move it to the raid-IDE the errors return. I've get Error reading / writing to disk and when I've did a chkdsk I've got the "Coudn't use Device) so I did a scandisk and it found very very many errors so it completly ereased everything that was on it.
And when I've run Western Digitals program again i've get an error (Disk error read/writing) error code: 0113.
Can it be that the Western Disk doesn't work well with Raid? I've haven't heard anything about that, so...
    Best regars,

I've had similar problems where my system becomes very unstable at higher bus speeds. Installing Windows XP simply didn't work very good. However, I have ordered a new PSU today as a solution to this problem. Basically, CPUs and video cards are much more demanding and the more devices you have in your computer the more power you're going to need. I recommend purchasing the Enermax EG465P-VE (FCA) 450W ATX PS. It has a higher amperage rating and will most likely solve your problem.
Check your PSU and your bus speed settings...

Hallo , my question is ;whenever I delete a photo and restore it through Time machine and Western digital external hard drive , I am able to restore the photo but not the titles and descriptions . Western Digital inform me that it isn't their external hard drive problem and suggest that it is an Apple software problem ?
    I am using  a Macbook 4.1 , with Mac OSX 10.5.8 . I photo 7.1.5 , last modifie4d 01/05/2010 -universal . Should I be upgrading  Iphoto ?

  • How do I erase an older Western Digital 1TB mirrored hard drive? Newer drives can be erased via a WD Utility, but the WD site says to "ask Apple" about the older ones.

I have a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.7.5.  The hard drive is approx. six years old - a Western Digital for Macs, mirrored with 1TB on each half.
Because the drive is "infected" with Time Machine backups that I can't erase, I have removed all important files from the drive and now want to wipe it clean.  I've done this with new drives, via the WD Utility that came with the drive, but the older drive doesn't have such a utility.  The WD site only has a protocol for PCs.
I find nothing on the Apple site itself.  Can you community members help??
(I've tried various ways of deleting the Time Machine backups, but nothing has worked.  The instructions for that, which I read on a community support site, were too advanced for me to understand.  A Mac IT guy tried to erase the backups, but he didn't know how either.  So that is why I'm erasing the drive totally.  I've learned my lesson and have a dedicated Time Machine drive now.)

    Please be clear:
This is a mirrored RAID that you use as the startup disk?
You now have a different startup disk and wish to erase the RAID mirror?
Do you wish to continue using the RAID for backup?
If all you want to do is erase the RAID to get rid or the Time Machine backups, the use Disk Utility to erase the mirror disk mounted on the Desktop.
