Hitting "save" is closing my documents & driving me nuts

Recently, anytime I hit "save", the document automatically closes. This happens using various programs (FTP software, Photoshop, Text-wrangler, Text-edit etc). Its driving me nuts. How can I stop this? Im using a macbook pro running 10.6.8
Ive had this computer for years and this just started happening. I dont know why. Im sure I hit a setting somewhere. Can someone help me undo this? Thanks.

I know it may sound strange but it's worth a try.
Change the ethernet cable that connect the D-Link internet port to your ISP modem.
I had a similar problem with a D-Link access point a couple of weeks ago. Intermittent WiFi connection with constant WiFi password request.
A new ethernet cable solved the issue.

  • Pages makes duplicate copy of my document every time I hit save

    Hi,
I searched but didn't see this exact problem mentioned anywhere so here goes...
I'm using Pages 2.0.2 and everytime I hit save on a document I get a duplicate copy with "Backup of" affixed to the front of the file name also saved in the documents folder. The contents of both files are identical and include all the work/changes I've made up until I click save. Both versions of the file are being saved with the standard ".pages" extension.
This is happening on all of my files and it's driving me crazy.
I keep reading that Pages does not have an autosave/backup feature and I certainly can't find one in the preferences but mine seems to be backing up anyway.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
Don't know if this has anything to do with it, sorry if it doesn't, but when you first did File>Save As did you tick the box "Save A Copy in iWork 5 format"?
    Steve
Just found this in Pages Help:
Quote: Backing up the previous version of a document when you save it
Each time you save a document, you can have Pages also save a copy of the document that does not contain your most recent changes.
To back up the previous version of a document when you save it:
    Choose Pages > Preferences.
In the General pane, select "Back up previous version when saving."
Pages saves the previous version in the same folder as the latest version with "Backup of" added in front the document's name. If you make more changes to the document and save it again, Pages replaces the old backup file with the new backup file.

  • Working on a downloaded document and hit "save." Where is it now?

I was working on a document that I had downloaded. When I made the changes I hit "save." Now I don't know where the document is. How can I find it?

Firefox usually saves such files as read-only to prevent data loss because files in the TEMP folder can be removed at any time.
If you saved the file to that same location then your changes my not have been saved.
As posted above, you should use "Save as" if you want to make changes to a downloaded file that you opened in an application instead of saving it.

My delete button in my to do's closes the app. I've closed all the background running apps and have restarted my phone and even tried syncing to my iTunes. It's driving me nuts. Please help!

Will not complete a sync without crashing and saying cannot read to the device or something to that effect.
    That sounds familiar.
Just doublechecking ... have you worked through the suggestions from the following document in the course of your troubleshooting to date?
[What to do when Windows displays a blue screen error message or restarts when syncing the iPhone or iPod touch|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1502]
(The stuff I was worried about in my initial reply has since been documented in its own troubleshooting document. Some of the symptoms of that are covered in: [iTunes for Windows: System restarts, blue screen, or quits unexpectedly when accessing iTunes Store|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3441] )

  • Save for web marks document as modified

When you save a document for web it considers the document to have been modified and will prompt you to save when closing. This is kind of annoying behavior because the document isn't actually modified; it adds an extra step of dismissing a save dialog and also can put you in doubt as to whether you have actually made unsaved changes.
My understanding of this 'feature' is that illustrator considers you to have changed the 'export settings' for the document hence the requirement for saving, This would be fine except that it doesn't actually save your export settings, so if you don't want to use the defaults it will continuously prompt you to save the document every single time you export it for web even if you are plugging the same numbers into the export dialog.
I'd really like to see this fixed, its a small thing but it costs me a lot of time when exporting lots of documents.

I agree the confusion is annoying to get a save box even if you have not changed any export settings. When printing a document this works fine as I only get an asterisk after the filename, when I change a print setting. Since many people miss the asterisk par twill post a screenshot.
I am getting different results that you on Mac CS6 for save to web. It appears the ave for web settings are actually within the document such as compression format, number of colors, matter color. Gets quite confusing because when you create a new document it seems to use the last settings used.
You may want to look into actions if you have a folder of documents needing save for web, as that works well once set up.

  • Can I make it so Pages "asks me" if I want to save before closing?

Can I set Pages to ask me if I want to "save" a document before closing it?  AppleWorks always used to ask me first before closing a document I was working on.  Is there a way to get Pages to do this, too?  Thanks.

No, Auto Save and Versions is a feature of Lion. Pages merely utilizes it. I don't care how many national primetime TV specials you've produced. I never called you stupid, but you are ignorant of Lion and OS X - OK?
If all you can do is gripe about it then don't post. I'm trying to help you understand but you seem just to want to argue about the past being better than the present. If you cannot use Snow Leopard then learn to deal with what you have.
I'll quit responding since you are becoming rude and argumentative. Sometimes you don't always "get your way."

  • Alart pop-up before closing a document withouit saving, no more?

Since Lion, Pages no longer pops up the alart message when you try to close a document withouit saving; it just saves without asking. I find this quite annoying.
I save small changes that I make to a document quite frequently. If I close a document by accident, thereby saving it, then the content of the document and that of the auto back-up become almost identical. That means the back-up is utterly useless. Nor can I "undo" the changes as I lose all the edit history by closing the document.
Is there any way to bring back the old alart pop-up?

  • Problem with Macro Running When Closing a Document

    Hi Folks;
I'm trying to develop a Visio macro that runs when I close a document, but I've run into a snag...
The problem is that the code below only works when I press the 'X' in the corner of the document to close it.  If I try to close it using
File -> Close, I get the error "Run Time Error -2032464741 (86db0c9b) An exception occurred", and the debugger highlights the first 'Application' line.
I need the code to work regardless of the close operation, and I'm not sure how to make that happen (since I assumed it should've work the same regardless).
Private Function Document_QueryCancelDocumentClose(ByVal doc As IVDocument) As Boolean
    Document_QueryCancelDocumentClose = True
If MsgBox("If you made changes, did you UPDATE the Diagram History? (Select Yes if no changes were made)", vbYesNo + vbCritical + vbDefaultButton2, "Warning - DIAGRAM HISTORY UPDATED?") = vbYes Then
    Application.ActiveDocument.Pages.ItemU("Diagram").Layers.Item("Warning").CellsC(4) = 1
    Document_QueryCancelDocumentClose = False
    Else
    Document_QueryCancelDocumentClose = True
    End If
    End Function
    Any help would be appreciated.

I'm betting your typical "try this" response is not what anyone wants.  But since you've chimed in... my problems with the Visio event model are PLENTY.  Print and save events that cannot be cancelled, document close that doesn't fire on application
close, and Application.BeforeDocumentSaveAs that occurs WAY AFTER the document has been saved are just a few.  (Did Microsoft even test these events??)  The official Microsoft response to ALL of this was, in a word, "repurpose" it. Essentially they
advocate completely rewriting the actual Save and Print portions of the interface and corresponding logic in Visio by intercepting keystrokes and redirecting ribbon extensibility idMso ="FileSave" and idMso ="FileSaveAs" commands to your own methods.
    To quote paid support:
"You may repurpose Save command in Visio as suggested in my previous email, however there is a design limitation that does not allow repurposing Print backstage button.
In order to achieve Visio Print repurpose, the workaround is to hide the print back stage altogether and plug with custom backstage ribbon xml."
We now also repurpose idMso="FilePrintQuick", idMso="FilePrintPreview", and idMso="FileClose" customUI commands, but we still had to use the logic above to catch save before closing.
Valid methods that work while Visio is active will fail within Application close.  IT IS A BUG IN VISIO.  That is what this post is about.

  • Logic is crashing when I hit save. Starting to panic! :)

    Hi all,
I think there must be a direct correlation between computer problems and deadlines. This one's making me panic because I'm dead in the water today, yet HAVE to get a bunch of things done for a client by tomorrow. *deep breath....breathe...breathe....*
Here's what's happening: I boot up Logic 9, I open up an Empty Project, add 20 empty software tracks. On the first track, I'll add a piano (I've tried a piano in both Kontakt 4 and EXS24, just to see if my problem stems from the plug-in). Then I'll hit "save".
Every single time I do this, I get a white flash right after hitting "Save," then Logic crashes. I can't seem to open up a new file and save it. I can, however, open up an old file, make changes and save it. HOWEVER, then Logic really starts acting odd. I can't "Close Project" or even "Quit Logic Pro" after that. When I try to do either, nothing happens. I have to "Force Quit."
So, something's really whacked out with my system, and since I've never seen the computer act this way, I don't know where to start fixing the problem. I've tried repairing the permissions a couple times and trashing the prefs, but to no avail.
I haven't worked with Logic much for the past couple days, and the only thing I remember doing different between the time it was working fine a few days ago and now is that I updated iTunes, made sure I was up-to-date on all the other Apple software (OS, Quicktime, etc.), and purchased an update for iPhoto and iMovie. Other than that, I haven't done anything on the computer.
    <begin reminiscing>Those rock-solid stable days with Logic 8 sure were nice.... ;D </reminiscing>
    Thanks for your help,
    Kevin

OK. I was finally able to get Logic to go back to opening with the initial dialog box. So, here's what I did:
I launched Logic 9.0.0 from my application folder. I chose "Empty Project" in the dialog box. The first thing it asked me was how many tracks I wanted to create. I chose 1 Software Instrument track. Then, I chose "Save" (also on another attempt I chose "Save As..."). It immediately crashed, and I got the following error message (in part). It's all greek to me. Can anyone help me decipher any problem that this is revealing?

  • I can no longer save PDF files to documents

Until recently, I could download a bank statement, for instance, and save it to a folder on my hard drive. Now when I try to do this I can only save to online file. And today, I was told I was out of memory. I do not have a paid plan. I don't want to save or share these documents online, I do want to keep them on my computer like I have in the past. Any suggestions?

Without any details it's impossible to even guess what your problem could be.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window.
This action will delete any custom Mail stationery that you have created. If you want to preserve it, ask for instructions.
If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Reader XI doesn't save changes to any document !!!

I have a problem with adobe reader XI version 11.0.0.7 which started very lately in which I try changing settings at ctrl+k (Preferences) then just as I close the program and reopen it everything returns as it was and my document returns to page 1 with default zoom instead of my changes!! Although I have the save recent changes to document box checked. Also any other box that is checked or unchecked returns to what it was right after reopening the program.
    My OS : win7 ultimate 64bit
    P.S: I don't have Adobe Acrobat.

Hey anyone ??? this has been up for 2 days and still no reply
