233 MHz Rev. A iMac won't start - Any ideas?
I have an original Rev. A 233MHz iMac that served me well in its time. I have a GameWizard card in the mezzanine slot and ~256MB of RAM in the upper memory slot. The last time I used this machine with any regularity I was dual-booting 9.2.2 and 10.2 without a hitch. However, it's not gotten any use in the past 6 years or so until recently, when I thought I'd wipe the drive and install Ubuntu for kicks.
Here's my problem. When I power on the computer, the fan kicks on and the power light glows amber. That's it. No chimes, no beeps, no drive activity, no sign of life at all. Pushing the power button does nothing - I have to yank the A/C cord out of the back to shut it off. I've replaced the PRAM battery, checked the seating of the processor card, and examined the RAM chips. Everything looks good. I unplugged the onboard video cable and tried to boot, but still no joy, so I'm reasonably sure it's not the flyback transformer. I've looked all over these threads but couldn't find any that were definitively answered, so I'm trying again.
Anyone have any experience with this issue in the original iMacs? I know I can buy replacements on eBay for crazy cheap but I'm quite sentimental about this machine and don't want to call it dead just yet.

ChrisMy favorite was the first Star Trek Elite Force game. That pushed that Voodoo card to its limits, and it ran surprisingly well. It was almost unplayable using the stock graphics. I'm sure my 466 MHz G3 upgrade helped too (it's an early pre-bankrupt Newer Tech card before the later G4 products and even before the first Mac OS X release).
Back to the problem... Try disconnecting the internal video cable that connects the chassis (with the motherboard, CPU, and drives) to the rest of the iMac's body. With it disconnected, power it up; does it sound like it is starting up when you press the power button? Obviously, you won't see anything on the screen, but the button should turn green and hard drive should make sounds like it is starting up.
If that works, you can shut it down (after it completes the startup sequence) by pressing the power button and then Return. And that would most likely indicate a problem with the analog video board (aka PAV). It works now because you are bypassing the internal video, and the iMac passes the startup hardware test. -
I have an intermittent problem that my i-mac will not eject a CD. It makes the noise that it is "trying" but it often does not work. Does anybody have any bright ideas how to solve the problem apart from sending it in to be mended?

my birthday events for only some of my contacts are showing up twice in my iPhone. They are not showing up twice tho on my iMac. No, I do not have duplicate names in my address book either. Any idea how to fix that?

So, as discussed the main issues are:
1) The TOC doesn't generate all the listings (only those with the applied paragraph style "Heading 1 - Appendix")
2) When I try to create a new pargraph style and apply it to existing or new text, it reads the pargraph style in the Paragraph Style menu, but the style doesn't actually apply.
Hopefully you can figure something out from this. I really appreciate your help.

I have an iPhone 3GS and was trying to restore it...
Now it won't let me activate my phone and my itunes tells me I have no SIM card inserted when I do.
Any ideas on how to get it working again?This means that the phone was previously hacked to carrier unlock (unauthorized unlock), and when you restored, the hack was removed and it became re-locked to its original carrier. It will now accept a SIM card only from that carrier.
Your only option is to contact the carrier it's locked to and enquire if they will provide authorized unlocking. Not all carriers will unlock and those that do usually have requirements and qualifications - i.e. you have to be a current or former customer in good standing. -
My iPad2 won't turn on. It will act as if turning on but when I slide to unlock it freezes. I have tried to reset and it will not. Any ideas?

Have had no previous problems with iTunes but for past two weeks my I tunes progress bar is not moving and music won't play.
I also have no audio from my laptop at all. Any ideas? I am running windows 8.I'm having the same incredibly frustrating problem. I have 50-60 GBs of music and now literally ALL OF A SUDDEN most of my mp3s won't play in iTunes. Of the songs that do play, many of them sound garbled (almost as if you were listening to them underwater). As others have noted, the songs do in fact play properly in other media players (VLC, MPC, WMP, etc).
I feel like I've tried just about everything but I can't seem to fix the problem. Nor have I been able to find any viable solutions after hours of scouring the internet. Here is a list of the steps I've taken so far, in chronological order:
1. Closed/re-opened iTunes
2. Re-booted computer
3. Uninstalled/re-installed iTunes
4. Tried deleting songs from iTunes library and then re-adding them, but after dropping files into the library they don't show up at all, iTunes refuses to import them
5. Downgraded from iTunes 8 to iTunes 7
None of these things have helped at all and I am amazed that even after completely uninstalling iTunes 8 and then installing version 7 I'm still experiencing the same problem. And, on top of things, I've found that iTunes 7 is not recognizing the ID3 tags for many of the songs it does import.
My apologies for the length of this post. I just want to be specific and provide as much info as I can so that maybe we can find a solution to this thing.

Are you using ITunes 10.5? If so have you upgraded to the OS 5 software? Now it should tell you there's an even newer upgrade to the 5.0.1 when you try to sync your iPhone or iPad. Hope this helps.

My iPod touch is stuck in landscape view. Even when held vertically if I open facebook or safari is rotates to landscape. Have tried turning on and off, same results. Any ideas to fix?
Try switching it back from landscape to vertical. Or, go to settings and see if you have any special setting turned on that enable only landscape view. Also, try hooking it up to your computer and charging it to see what happens.

I am having problems with the Preview application. When I try to use it to open a pdf document it gets hung-up and I have to select force quit to close it. Any ideas on how to resolve this problem? Thanks for any help
Can you open the Preview program without loading a file, like by itself?
If it doesn't load then I suspect a corrupt Preview preference file.

I am unable to sync all my selected songs to my iphone. The error message is that the computer is not authorized. However, I have authorized the computer and iTunes confirms that. Any ideas what can be done to fix this. My phone is an iPhone 4S.

The usual problem is the creation of an anamorphic 16:9 file and either losing the internal flag/aspect settings or displaying the file on a media player that does not correctly use the display information embedded in the file. Physically splitting/trimming anamorphic source files in iMovie rather than splitting/trimming the source content by reference can throw away the anamorphic settings/flag when the content is re-written to the hard drive, incorrectly creating a non-anamorphic file from an anamorphic source, or incorrectly creating an anamorphic file from a non-anamorphic source can all produce your problem. To know what is happening, you will either have to provide more details regarding your workflow or provide an sample clip for examination. In some cases, depending on the video compression format involved and the target media player, the problem can be fixed without having to re-compress the file. -
