HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4482B

I have a HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4482B and the computer recognizes the drive, however when a disc is placed in the drawer and the drawer closed the drive does not spin and the drive wants to write to the disc. This happens with any kind/type disc.

  • Why does my "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4482B drive" not recognise DVD-R discs?

This "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4482B" drive on my machine does not recognise DVD disks. I then remove the DVD disks and load them into another drive on the same machine where they are recognised immediately.
As the dual drive setup is very handy I'd like to have both DVDs working again.
I have been tried to update the firmware for my "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4482B drive" but it fails to complete and this message appears:  "The update did not complete successfully, (9994)"
I would appreciate any help with this issue.

    Hi
Could not find anywhere firmware for HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4520B combo srive in eMac 1.25ghz.
One Ive found was for Win OS only.
Sys. profile shows Revision no. 1. Would that be up to date?
    Or newer firmware available?
There were topics on updating firmware of Super Drives, but no info about Combos in eMacs.

  • DVD drive crashes mac

    I recently fitted a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-112D in my 1.25 MDD G4 and I can't get it to work.
When mac is started up the bottom tray opens (112D) then when i put a blank dvd in, it spins loudly, nothing mounts and the cursor is stuck on the spinning wheel thing. I can move the cursor but can't click on anything. Force quitting and trying to open the tray doesn't do anything and I have to press the power button to restart. When there's no disc in the drive Toast 7 recognises it and it shows up in system profile.
The original drive is in the top bay (HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4480B) and this works ok for burning cds but I need the dvd burner to copy a large design job asap!
Any ideas/info would be appreciated, thanks.
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-112D:
    Manufacturer: PIONEER
    Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-112D
    Revision: 1.09
    Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
    Disc Burning: Vendor Supported
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 1
    Socket Type: Internal

With two optical drives, one needs to be jumpered master, the other jumpered as slave.
In OS 10.3.9, you need Patchburn to get full support of the burner.
If all else fails, try with only the DVR-112 connected (jumpered as master).

  • DVD drive is initiating "safe to remove hardware" by itself

Hi. I am getting the following 2 error messages. I just did a clean re-install of Windows 7 and for the first 3 weeks I had no issues at all (could be unrelated). I am not initiating anything. My laptop is doing this by itself. It just randomly on its own
tries to remove my DVD-ROM. Then it is unable to do it b/c the device is still in use. I have tried searching for this issue and cannot find any other threads. It clicks and beeps and does this all day long - it interrupts my work. The DVD player works just

I am not trying to remove. I have actually gone ahead and removed the DVD drive just to see if it would help, then put it back in, and the problem persists. I am running Window7 64-bit OS. Please help me stop this annoying problem! Thanks!

    Hi,
The reson why I share KB555665 with you is that we can refer to the instruction to use Process Explorer to view what happened with the drive. We can view the detailed process of the drive and find out what is handling\controlling it.
Or there may be some hardware or software that is interfering with the CD or DVD drive. You can test this after restarting your computer in a clean boot state
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
If this issue disappears in this mode, then we can go on to find out the cause. Detailed instructions about How-To are included in KB 929135

  • DVD/CD drive, 7675 laptop

My problem is the disk drive in my 7675 laptop: a type DVD/CD-ROM  HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4247N.
I use Windows XP which I recently loaded from the recovery medium purchased from Lenovo. After its installation I downloded SP 3 from Microsoft.com
I can watch movies from a video disk. I can also read and write CDs. However, I recently purchased Microsoft Home Office 2010, which came in a disk formatted as DVD/CD. My Windows XP would not accepted it in any way, and would shut itself with one of those warnings in large white characters on a blue background and the following line: BAD-POOL-HEADER.
I know that the disk is OK because I had no problems whatsoever reading the Home Office disk in a rather old DELL desktop.
The questions I would be very grateful to see answered:
    1. Is my disk drive deffective?
    2. If not, is any other laptop part deffective?
    3. How can I fix the problem?
    Many thanks
    Albert

Bad pool header is one of those crashes that be caused by a failure in many devices and device drivers. Try running PC doctor or Thinkvantage toolbox, or whatever it is called now.

  • Do I really need to buy an external drive to burn DVDs on my eMac (10.4)?

I have been trying to burn DVDs (using DVD-Rs, not DVD+Rs) on my eMac (OS 10.4) without success. The machine just acts as if nothing has been put in the drive; it whirrs and whirrs, no icon appears, no error message, nothing, until after half an hour or so I have to just eject it. On another forum, I was told that the problem was probably that my eMac can't recognize blank DVD-Rs, let alone burn them, without an external drive that has to be purchased separately. I want to be sure that's really true before buying anything, needless to say!
Another string on this forum suggested looking under "optical drive" under "About This Mac" to find out this kind of thing. I see nothing that specifically says "optical drive," but under Hardware and Disc Burning, it says:
    HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B:
    Firmware Revision: 2.05
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw
    Media: No
Is this enough information for someone to please be able to tell me whether I do indeed need to buy an external disc drive before I can burn DVDs?
(And, if so, what kind of drive is recommended?)
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Chris Roth
    [email protected]

While you can replace the intenal drive, opening up an eMac is not a trivial process and it's far easier to add an external drive. Go with Firewire rather than USB, even if your eMac is USB 2.0; support for Firewire under OS X is better and more stable. You can get a Firewire enclosure for around US$30 to $40 and a bare DVD-RW/CD-RW for about the same; or buy a complete system for around US$130 to $200 depending on features such as third-party burning software (Toast) or built-in label making with special DVD-R or CD-R blanks (LightScribe). OS X 10.3.3 and higher (which of course includes the 10.4 in your profile) includes native support for DVD-R burning, so you don't strictly need third-party software such as Toast, but Toast is more flexible than the built-in burner and allows for packing more data on a disc since Toast has better control over the disc's directory size. LightScribe is an appealing idea, but slow, and the blanks are expensive. When consideringf whether to roll your own, so to speak, with an enclosure and bare drive, don't overlook that you'll need a good-quality Firewire cable; cheap cables can cause a surprising amount of grief. Unless you have a bare DVD-RW drive handy, I persoanlly find the convenience of a commercial drive, with cable and power supply/cord already packaged together, outweighs the savings of assembling a drive yourself. I'm partial to LaCie D2 Firewire drives myself, but there are other models that work fine.

  • T60: CD-RW DVD-ROM driver was corrupted or missing

    Hi,
I just finished updating my wireless driver (Atheros chip, using opendrivers.com) to get rid of a long-running problem with BSOD. That seems fine, now I can't use my combo optical drive. The drive name is HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4247N ATA Device. Windows (Vista) tells me the driver has been corrupted or is missing. The standard searches from the Windows device manager dialogs come up empty.
I didn't get far searching the Internet for the driver (although I think it is an LG ?). Can someone point me to a source for this driver ?
    Thanks
    Al

This is a nice tool - Lenovo System Toolbox, but it does not help me find any driver. It only pulls up the Windows dialog that triggers a search for a driver or installs it. It doesn't add a new search capability, it just makes it easier to access what was already there in Windows. I still have the same problem.
When I search the Lenovo site, I can find a page that lists a variety of drivers for many device types. Unfortunately, the only entry for a CD-Rom shown under Thinkpad T60 is one for "Dos". Unbelievable.
Any other suggestions would be very welcome.
    Thanks
    Al

  • Two emacs having the exact same dvd read / cdrw write issues

We have two emacs that have the exact same cdrw / dvd drive: Model:HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B
    Revision: 2.05
both emacs eject any dvd (including the emac restore dvds they both came with) - and get cd burn issues (even trying to burn at 1x speed and just 20 megs of data).
I have a third emac that has the superdrive and it works fine - it is just these two emacs using OS X 10.3.9 on both emacs.
Just installed a brand new DVD burn/cdrw internal drive into one of the emacs and it still has the exact same issues.
Has there been a recall issued on these emacs or the drives? I feel it is something in the software that could be wrong - where can I check to make sure I have the correct drivers installed?
any suggestion or help would be greatly appreciated

Does Superdrive Firmware Update apply to the eMacs in question?

  • Superdrive reads DVD's, not CD's

I recently bought a used G5 from a University surplus store. It will read DVD's, but not CD's. Is it possible that the university was able to disable the reading of CD's for use in computer labs?
This is what it says when I look under "disk burning" in System Profile:
    HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B:
    Firmware Revision: 2.05
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw
    Media: No
    Any thoughts?

Probably more likely that the drive's CD laser has failed. Thankfully, new (and faster) drives cost about $30.
You could also try reinstalling OS X from the original install media, and then seeing whether or not the drive will read CDs. That would tell you if something had been disabled or corrupted. However, you'll lose all your existing data and it's a lengthy process.

  • Movie DVD auto ejects with "error code -43" message

This issue first came up about 3 years ago but I was never able to find an answer to. This is a Combo drive (HL-DT-ST; RW/DVD GCC-4120B; revision 2.13) which still reads/writes CDs and reads DVD-ROMs without any problem. Is there any way to fix this error?

There may be system logs, reports and other evidence of
this issue in the Console or perhaps in System Profiler logs.
Some other noted error code -43 messages seen elsewhere
related to software and plugins for third party applications or
disc burn applications; but troubleshooting could include a
look to see if the cables to the optical drive are OK, and a
fix may include a replacement drive. There was an included
Apple Hardware Test with the original system software packet
so that may be something to try and hope it tells you more.
The error code may have several different causes, it would
seem; at least according to the results of some searches.
In my limited experience, my Macs have never shown that.
The code is not limited to the model of the computer; so a
repost elsewhere is not really necessary. And a similar error
code appears in later OS X versions.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Several DVD problems

    Hello there,
I'd just like to ask you, if anyone already experienced one of the following problems - as my Mac is really suffering from it.
DVD Burning: While burning a DVD through iDVD, the rendering process crashes the entire computer just at the moment, when audio rendering should be begun (Message: You need to restart your computer. Press and hold down power button, no crash logs). After the restart, rendering will work without a problem. (problem can be reproduced, in fact everytime I start a new DVD project)
iDVD 6: Rendering my DVD projects is extremely slow. The last project was a 2 hours video project with sound; cut with iMovie HD 6; rendering process in iDVD needed 3 hours - then it crashed, I need to restart the computer and the rendering process - another 12 hours were needed by iDVD 6. With iDVD 5 the project only needed 2 to 3 hours.
DVD Playback: When watching a DVD, the entire computer crashes (Message: You need to restart your computer...). After restart, DVD playback is working fine.
Other programs, that use the DVD frameworks: The same problems as for DVD playback.
DVD recognition: After having used QuickTime or programs that use QuickTime, DVDs no longer will be recognized (DVD player will open but it says, No DVD available and it won't show up in Finder). After restart, the same DVD will be recognized - no more problems.
I suppose, it is a problem related to some or all of the DVD frameworks in Mac OS X.
I already tried: Repair permissions and Clean Install
I am using: eMac USB 2.0 1,25 GHz
Mac OS X 10.4.8 and all updates installed

And a LaCie d2 FireWire - DVD DL - burner (same problems while using this drive)

Sounds like each time you restart, the Mac OS rebuilds itself giving you the expected results for completing your objective of burning an iDVD, which makes sense. What doesn't make sense is what is currently causing your G4 to crash each time you ask it to burn a DVD forcing a restart in order to accomplish this task....assuming it does indeed burn to disc.
Here's what I recommend since I suspect you may be having an issue with external devices. Disconnect any and all externals from your emac (except the keyboard and mouse). Launch iMovie. Build a short 3 min. iMovie project and share it to iDVD6. Post back with the results and let us know if your mac encounters the same results w/o any externals connected to your mac.
If your ext. device is what you are currently using to burn your project, then i'd recommend burning this short project to a disc image first and thereafter connecting the ext. fw burner to complete the final stage.
Hope this helps but if not please feel free to post back.

  • Do I have a blank region 2 DVD?

    iMacG4
    OS 10.4.6
    Original internal CD/DVD drive: HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4120B
When I attempt to play a region 2 movie DVD (having changed the internal DVD player from region 1 to region 2, using Region X.app) I experience the following:
Upon inserting the DVD (region 2), I receive the message: 'you inserted a blank DVD'.
But I can choose to launch iDVD, iTunes, Disk Utility, or Finder.
I select 'open Finder', and an icon named 'Untitled CD.fpbf' appears on desktop.
I drag the icon over the DVD Player.app, and am told 'the media type is not supported'
First time that I've tried that whole process. DVDs have always played fine before, with no system/hardware modifications.

For those who may benefit, I did get some help concerning the apps DVDinfo X, Region X , and VLC regarding flashing firmware and swithching regions, many thanks to Malcolm Rayfield.

  • Disk Utility - Burning DVD from desktop file created from camcorder

I am unable to burn a DVD from a file on my desktop. When trying to use the upper tray, the disk drive won't remain closed and I am unable to proceed.
When using the lower tray, it begins the burn process, then returns this message:
Unable to burn file. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.
    The upper tray is a HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4480B
The lower tray is a Sony DVD RW DRU-530A.

Thanks for answering ALL the questions, too many times I ask as many questions as possible to get as much info as possible and I get a one line response.
4GB file with Disk Utility should be fine.
4x speed should be fine too, but you may want to try 2x, just in case the ATA-33 bus is struggling. The ATA-33 bus is the original bus in the MDD for the optical drives, the hard disks were on an ATA-66 and ATA-100 bus. Unfortunately ATA-33 is very limited in the amount of data it can reliably send in a given time, and 4x DVD burning is the absolute limit.
Sony DVD-R should be fine, many here are wary of Memorex media, I use it for temporary copies of product / games discs, but never for backups.
How is the external DVD burner attached ? FireWire ?
It really should be working, you've already confirmed that both the drives successfully burn CDs, so we know they're recognised and operating. And you've said the 4GB camcorder file is on your desktop, ie. on the internal hard disk, so we know it's not a speed issue with the source file, like if it was on a flash drive - or is it ? Or is it still on the camcorder ? If so get it copied to the internal hard disk.
Can you confirm the ATA-33 bus and Disc Utility support for the drive by using Apple System Profiler, if you select ATA, it should appear on the ATA-3 bus. You'll also have an ATA-4 and ATA-6 bus.
If you click on "ATA-3 bus" you should find an entry "Disc Burning" and it should say "Apple Supported" or similar. If it doesn't then I don't think you can burn with Disk Utility. Generally, above OSX 10.4.6 (or 10.4.5, can't remember exact) all these drives are supported, for burning and booting from. I suspect you're fine as you've said you burn CDs with it fine.
One thing some people do is to buy an ATA-133 PCI card, and run the internal hard disks off that and the ATA-100 on the motherboard. Then use the motherboard ATA-66 slot to drive the optical drives. Don't spend any money yet, we'd have to confirm that the burn speed is the issue. Like said, try burning at 2x or 1x.
Apologies now if my Apple System Profiler instructions are not 100% accurate, my OSX 10.5.5 Mac is unavailable just now so I've based my instructions on OSX 10.3.9 ASP.
