Hlep with gnome and xorg

I installed xorg, and gnome and gnome-extras ok.
When I run startx it takes me to a screen with 3 windows, xterm login and xterm, then i run gnome-session, it boots me into gnome, but with some problems.

I think GDM won't let you log in as root because it's generally a bad idea to run your whole DE as root.  Try logging in as a normal user and using su in a terminal - if that doesn't work then you have indeed forgotten your password . . .
If you have lost your passworrd, I think if you boot into single user mode (put 'single' at the end of your kernel line in Grub) you can change it without needing the old one.

1>then i can't promote garnome on this forum??
yeah you can, but not as a solution to gnome related problem in arch. cause this doesn't resolve anything.
2>You don't have to, garnome2.14.2.1(481kb) download the patches and patch it automatically, just change install dir to /usr
(ONLY if you are using console-linux who want gnome a try). of course there is need small arch related patch.(in my experience 0)
eh, i haven't got a clue what this means, putting patches upstream means they will get include in gargnome and upstream releases. i only tried to say we put a lot of our free time in gnome for arch.
2-1>Well said, so choice is the each one's freedom.
and this category isn't arch, this is Desktop Environments,
i installed arch, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEANS I SHOULD USE gnome FROM ARCH!!!
agreed, but again then we won't support your desktop.
    ARCH != gnome

  • [SOLVED]problem with GNOME and wireless connection

    Hi!
I'm new to Arch Linux, and have run into a few problems after installation.
My computer is a HP Pavilion dv6000.
I installed using "xf86-video-nouveau" driver, as i understand this is the best choice for "Nvidia Geforce Go 7400". Is it?
I also installed the complete "gnome", "gnome-extra", "gdm", "gnome-tweak-tool" and "gnome-shell-extensions" packages, but when I boot into gdm login, it automatically starts in fallback mode (the one who has "applications" and "places" in the top panel instead of "activities". What am I doing wrong here?
Btw, when I go to System settings - system info - graphics, there are three lines; "Driver", "Experience", "Forced Fallback Mode". "Driver" line only says driver, and is blank after. "Experience" line says "Fallback".  "Forced Fallback Mode" is set to OFF.
Also, I cannot figure out how to get my wireless network set up correctly.
When i open System Settings - Network, I get an error saying System network is not compatible with this version.
Any help with this woill be greatly appreciated!

-dri driver worked. But if the NVIDIA driver works better, I should probably consider using that one.
I tried to install the NVIDIA binary driver, but when i tried to run
    # chmod -X NVIDIA-Linux-x86-290.10.run
    # ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-290.10.run
I got a message telling me to close x first.
    How can I do this?
Ho ho ho buddy, I see you're trying to install the nvidia driver from the website. Have another look here:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nvidia#Installing
the drivers are available through pacman Installing the driver through pacman will automatically take care of removing things that conflict and installing things you need to ge t the NVIDIA driver to work.
NVIDIA _might_ be better, 3d support in nouveau is still somewhat experimental and nouveau doesn't have all the power management features yet. It'll be something to experiment with. Have a good read of the NVIDIA and NOUVEAU wiki articles

As for the wireless issue, I googled around a bit and found that the driver I need is ilw3945.
    I added this to /etc/rc.conf:
    DAEMONS=(...ilw3945...)
as it seems the drivers are included in udev.
However, when i try to open System Settings -> Network, it says
The system network services are not compatible with this version.
So I'm getting a little restless to find out what I can do to get the wireless network configurated properly, and how I can do it.
    Any ideas?
First I think you've fundamentally misunderstood something. Drivers for linux come in module form, not in DAEMON form. A DAEMON is an application that runs in the background (sound server, network service, etc etc).
ilw3945 would have to be added to your MODULES section in /etc/rc.conf if that is the module you need.

The problem is that I'm stuck in 1024x768... which is brutal on a 16:9 monitor. Ive installed the virtualbox guest additions through pacman and setup the modules in /etc/modules-load.d/virtualbox.conf and now when I reboot into x it fails and im stuck in the normal tty console.

  • [solved] Skype GTK3 theme with Gnome and Adwaita theme

    Hello,
Is it possible to have Skype using the Adwaita GTK3 theme on a 64Bit system?
I only get the following error:
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
(skype:8290): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "adwaita",
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
    Regards
Last edited by orschiro (2012-12-02 10:02:16)

    I resolved the issue.
    1. Install Adwaita-X theme from AUR together with lib32-gtk2. You do not need to install lib32-gtk-engines.
    2. Create ~/.gtkrc-2.0 with gtk-theme-name = "Adwaita-X" in it.
    3. Add export GTK2_RC_FILES="/etc/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:$HOME/.gtkrc-2.0" to your ~/.xinitrc.
Skype should now use the Adwaita-X gtk2 port on a 64bit system. You do not need to change or set anything in qtconfig.
If you then launch skype you may still receive the following messages:
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
(skype:8290): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "adwaita",
The first one just says that you need to install lib32-libcanberra-pulse from multilib repo.
As for the second warning I do not know how to get rid of that since I cannot reproduce why skype still looks for the adwaita theme although Adwaita-X was specified in the gtkrc file.

  • No TV sound - Problem with Pulseaudio and Gnome

    Hi Community!
Since January 2013 I got big problems with the sound of my tvcard. The card is a Sundtek Media TV Pro. But after all the problems have nothing to to with the card itself!
So far I found out, that the problem is with Pulseaudio.
    - Sound works under Windows on same PC.
    - Sound don't work under Arch - not with tvtime, not with vlc, etc.
    - Problem occurs even on a new installed system with the Arch-2013-02-01 install medium.
    cat /etc/mediasrv.log
[1033] Pulseaudio connect reported an error (6 - Connection refused)
[1033] select error() in audio processor (can be caused because of pulseaudio) (Interrupted system call)
After setting up a new Arch installation with just xorg-server, gnome, tvtime and the sundtek driver from AUR I run journalctl -b:
    Feb 10 16:25:15 hightower pulseaudio[636]: [pulseaudio] pid.c:
    Daemon already running.
With sudo journalctl | grep 'Feb 10 16:2' I get the following output:
Feb 10 16:25:01 hightower rtkit-daemon[489]: Successfully made thread 488 of process 488 (/usr/bin/pulseaudio) owned by '120' high priority at nice level -11.

Feb 10 16:28:55 hightower pulseaudio[997]: [pulseaudio] main.c: Start des Daemons fehlgeschlagen.
So, if I understand right, pulseaudio is alreade started by the rtkit-daemon and gnome couldn't start it again.
    At https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/30926 I found a hint concerning /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio.desktop and /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio-kde.desktop.
After removing them from /etc/xdg/autostart and running journalctl -b there are no more errors.
With sudo journalctl | grep 'pulseaudio' I get:
sudo journalctl | grep 'Feb 10 17:4' | grep 'pulse*'
Feb 10 17:41:42 hightower rtkit-daemon[485]: Successfully made thread 484 of process 484 (/usr/bin/pulseaudio) owned by '120' high priority at nice level -11.

In my opinion all looks ok! I also checked the channels with the alsamixer and it looks good, too.
So I ran vlc v4l2://:dev=/dev/video0:width=720:height=576:tuner-frequency=510750:adev=/dev/null:standard=255 - but still no sound.
With cat /var/log/mediasrv.log I checked the drivers logfile:

    2013-02-10 17:48:59 [1033] Pulseaudio connect reported an error (6 - Connection refused)
I started tvtime again. This time I ran rm -rf ~/.config/pulse/ and killall pulseaudio to kill the Pulseaudio server. I instantly got a loud noise out of my speakers.
I closed tvtime and re-opened it. And there it was: TV SOUND OUT OF MY SPEAKERS!
But now, when I run pavucontrol I get:
Connection to PulseAudio failed. Automatic retry in 5s.
In this cas this is likely because PULSE_SERVER in the Environment/X11 root Windows Properties or default-server in client.conf is misconfigured.
This situation can also arrise when PulseAudio crashed and left stale details in the X11 Root Windows.
If this is the case, then PuseAudio should autospawn again, or if this is not configured you sould run start-pulseaudio-x11 manually.
I got the information from Sundtek, that Pulseaudio should not be started as system service. Instead, every user should have an own Pulseaudio daemon and that PA was concepted this way. But they don't know how it is implemented in ArchLinux.
I also don't know it exactly. So the question to all you ArchLinu pro's:
How is PA implemented in Arch? And how can I sustainable solve my problem?
Thank you for your time and help!
    Durag

There is just one more thing I found out.
After logging into Gnome and running ps aux | grep pulse I get:

To get the sound to work I run:
    rm -rf .config/pulse/
    killall pulseaudio
    killall -9 pulseaudio
I again run ps aux | grep pulse
    rebel 4016 4.2 0.2 510124 11528 ? Sl 03:06 0:02 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog

    rebel 4046 0.0 0.0 19456 1216 pts/0 R+ 03:07 0:00 grep pulse
I can recognize that the STATs have changed. Maybe this can help to solve the problem?

    * 'gnome-shell --replace' also work in xfce with systemd

I think there is some problems with dbus...

Without a dbus socket, dbus probably isn't running. It's supposed to be started automatically when a program needs it. Check to see that it is installed and running:
    pacman -Q dbus
    pgrep -l dbus
Dbus won't run without hal, so hal should be in:
    tail /etc/rc.conf
Are any of your partitions full?
    df -h
For the other error, it looks like libdrm isn't installed, but I don't think you need it if you're running the nvidia driver.
Your xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log would also be useful. Also check dmesg for errors.
And see if /etc/rc.d/dbus is marked executable.

  • Installed arch linux on windows 8 laptop and with GNOME

    Hi all,
I am trying to learn more about linux and decided to go the Arch Linux way. I've battled through a bunch of issues before I got to this point so I might have fudged something along the way.
The current issue is that I install GNOME, and it boots up into GNOME, and I select my username and type my password, and then I see black screen with blinking cursor for 10 seconds after which I am returned to GNOME login screen. It doesn't do a system reboot before going back to the login screen.
The only way to stop this is to put in my livecd arch-linux usb drive and then delete GNOME, after which arch linux will boot back into terminal. (I wish I knew how to do this without using the usb drive)
What should I look at for hints? I don't see any output when this loop happens.
    Thanks!

Ok that works and I can log in. However I don't see any familiar drives mounted. Anyway, I have the output from journalctl. Here it is

By the way, I got this file by using startX (becuase otherwise i didnt have permissions), used > to output it to a file, mounted a usb flash drive, copied it to flash drive, used a windows computer to copy the file to my ubuntu laptop (because the folder wouldn't show up in the ubuntu computer) and then posted it here. There has to be a better way to post a debug manage on here.

  • Issue with Gnome 3.12 login and MOTD

    Hello,
This may be trivial, but I've struggled to find an answer for a problem I now have following creating an motd. I wanted an motd especially for terminal / ssh logins, but had no idea Gnome would attempt (I believe it does anyway) to display the motd contents immediately after logging in.
Whilst this would not be an issue if it actually worked and displayed the motd rather than garbage (see image below). It makes my login time much longer as it hangs on the login screen, before finally reaching the desktop. If I blank the motd, this problem goes away, however, as said, I really want the motd for ssh and terminal use. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Is there a way to disable Gnome from reading this file, or to display it correctly and not hamper my login times?
I'm running Arch x86_64 with Gnome 3.12 and would appreciate any time and help on this.

  • [SOLVED] Problems with gnome on T420s (nvidia optimus)

    Hello everyone,
after finally managing to successfully launch a simple x session on my laptop I thought installing gnome would be an easy thing. Unfortunately gnome (or my hardware) does not think the same and so after installing gnome successfully, I fail to execute gdm succesfully
Let me provide some more info (logs etc. below):
configure my system to run gnome as desktop environment
using PRIME to handle both devices (disabling intenal or discrete graphics card is not an option since I need it)
this implies not to use bumblebee - I'm very grateful to the work people invested in working everything but it comes with too many disadvantes regarding stability future updates in my eyes
I appreciate any comment and will provide more infos if needed, I also appreciate everything that will improve my understanding of the follwing (related) topics:
KMS in relation to configuration for drivers
    xorg configuration and debugging
    Logs etc.
Xorg.log - after executing and closing
    startx

Ok ok update! I now managed to launch gdm by executing it as root...
    su gdm
I have to admit that I'm still quite lost for It doesn't seem to provide anything else than blank screen with cursor and top bar... (so no login and no logout for example) There still seems to be missing a lot...
    Can someone please help out?

  • Having strange issues with kbmap and utc/localtime

    Hello,
I've been using Archlinux for a month or so, never had any problems until now.
    1. Setting the keymap doesn't stick. At first I had the German keymap selected in System-Preferences-Keyboard, and at reboot it would switch back to the standard US layout. Yesterday I deleted the current layout and again added German as the default.. And at bootup today I had a russian layout .
    2. I haven't been able to get the UTC function properly working.. The hwclock was set in UTC (date -u showed the correct time), UTC was set in the rc.conf, but the Gnome clock always showed the wrong time. (Now localtime is set in rc.conf)
2a. Related to that, I installed openntpd and added it as a startup daemon.. System-Administration-Time and Date still gives me an error message "NTP support is not installed" when I set the configuration to "Keep synchronized with internet servers".
    Here's my rc.conf
    # /etc/rc.conf - Main Configuration for Arch Linux

I don’t know that problem, but have you tried if turning off OpenGL and restarting has a bearing on the issue?
    Boilerplate-text:
Other than that are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, font validation, etc.)?

  • Gnome AND KDE won't start (i686 and 64bit)

    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=71991
I've had a rough time these past few days and I posted earlier on Arch64 forums thinking it was just architecture thing but as it turns out after my reinstallation of Arch to 64 bit again (First i686, then 64, then i686 and now 64 again) I finally got it to work but this time Gnome is a pain in the ass, it didn't work with KDE either but KDE never gave me an error or gave me an option to failsafe into the OS.

Just a point here is that I've had the exact same software installed the same day that I reinstalled and this error did not occur but after formatting my partition with ext4 and testing Arch64 it did. But it did with 32bit as well, there were tons of errors.
I've read about this ConsoleKit error in a few posts here but nothing seems to indicate a fix or anything and since I'm using Gnome now I didn't find anything on it just about KDE.
I can safely use "Failsafe Gnome" without startup scripts but I want it to work without any problems and I don't know if the "dri" thing is related to the ConsoleKit thing with GDM.
I installed it via FTP and had the latest updates as soon as I've installed, so if this is just something that is happening to me right now or alot of other people, please give us hints or anything that could solve this?
If you read my Arch64 thread you know that stuff stopped working for me, first the network (it turns out I had to boot Windows inbetween installing Arch for my network even to start and that sounds ridicilous if it depends on another operating system starting the device because in Windows the network card was turned on with a green light wherein Arch after installing it didn't. I reformated my partitions and changed it again, installed Windows again and tried it out and then installed Arch. It worked, and then I mixed around with KDE and after five minutes of using "startx" (the only thing working) I decided to reinstall with Gnome, but then the network didn't start again (tried booting about ten times) and then I just thought "Let's start windows first so it turns on" and when I just booted Windows and immiedatiely restarted it and booted with the Arch CD, network was available again. Strange? Or is this a period of instability for Arch?
But when I got my network to start, appearantly Keyboard and mouse wasn't working because Xorg forgot to install the drivers when I installed the full group of Xorg so I had to fix that and now it's giving me this error.
