Hmm.. don't recall re-installing Mac OS X

when I booted up my mac mini, and logged in, the home folder poped up, my icons on my desktop are scattered all over the place, itunes in the dock ended up being a "?" and iMovie being a "?" but next to it was iMovie HD that worked. anyone know what happened and how i can prevent this from happening? much thanks.

Hello Kevin:
Try running repair disk from your software install DVD. If that does not help, trash the finder preference file (com.apple finder.plist) and restart.

    plss, now my mbp running no os, help me is the problem is because i erase disk? what i should do right now?

    Wow, thanks.  It did the trick.  So now I am confused, do you think I still need to take in my Mac to see if there are some problems with the hard drive, or do you think I'm in the clear.  I was going to get a new hard drive installed, because I thought that was the issue seeing as I couldn't access it during safe mode.

    Unplug your iBook from the AC power, shut it down and take the main battery out for about fifteen minutes. Then you can put the battery back in, plug the power back in and restart. This should reset the USB and FireWire ports.
    If that doesn't help, you could reset the Power Management Unit. Follow the instructions in Knowledge Base Article #14449 for resetting your PMU.
    You probably should also startup from your Mac OS X install disk and run the Disk Utility to "repair disk" on your hard drive. This will determine if you've got some kind of file directory/software problems with the files on your hard drive.
    I'm not much at decoding kernel panic logs, but this line jumps out:
    Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.apple.filesystems.udf(1.4.1)@0x28a79000
    Did you have a DVD movie in the drive at the time? DVD movie disks are UDF format, but not much else is.

  • Silverlight plug-in does not works in FireFox 4 - beta 7 ( Mac OS 10.6.6 ) !!!! What is the problem ? I don't have any installed add-on !!!

    Hi every one
    Silverlight plug-in does not works in FireFox 4 - beta 7 ( Mac OS 10.6.6 ) !!!!
    I don't have any installed Extensions except "Better GReader" and "Video Helper" !!!
    I have problem with Seesmic.com and installing applications that required Silverlight !
    I installed latest version of Silverlight many times.
    Please help me.
    (I don't have any problem with Safari or other Web Browser.)
    Thank You all.

    Silverlight only supports non-64 bit versions of Firefox on OSX (and from Firefox 4 onwards we're shipping 64-bit Firefox to 64-bit OSX users) and unlike with other plugins, we can't just start a 32-bit process to run it because of issues with the silverlight plugin architecture. We're working with the Silverlight team at Microsoft to get those fixed but it's essentially waiting on them.
    (Or you could try to pressure them into releasing a 64-bit Silverlight for Macs.)

  • I want to de-install mac-excel test version and get the error message: you have not the privileges to de-install. Please login with the Mac-OS account you have installed mac-excel originally'. I don't know this account anymore. I am sysadm

    I want to de-install mac-excel test version and get the error message: 'You have not the privileges to de-install. Please login with the Mac-OS account you have installed mac-excel originally'. I don't know this account anymore. Possibly it does not exist anymore. anybody out there who can help ?

    Hi, I may suggest to activate the root account and try the uninstall process from that account. To do so, you have to:
    Go to System Preferences a open up the Users pane;
    On the left side of the pane, you shuold see Login Options;
    Enabled editing option clicking on the lock (it will ask your password);
    Once the pane is enabled, you should see something like Server Account Network (sorry my OS is in italian, so I don't exactly know the right translation), and right next to it a button;
    Click on that button, and a new pane shows up. Click on Open Directory Utility, and on the upper bar of OS X click on Edit;
    Select Enable Root Account (you can set a password, or not);
    Done that, you should log out and when the login window show up, type on the user field "root" and the password you choose;
    Theorically, from this account you will be able to unistall the application.
    After completing your task, I reccomend you to disable the root account, just by loggin in your personal account and repeating the steps I described before. Hope it helps

  • HT201364 why i don't install mac os x maverick for macbook pro retina later 2013?

    why i don't install mac os x maverick for macbook pro retina later 2013?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    The Late 2013 MacBook Pro already comes with OS X Mavericks. However, if you try to download OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store, you will get a message telling you that your MacBook Pro is not compatible, when it is.
    This is caused because the Late 2013 MacBook Pro is running a special OS X Mavericks version which is different than the version available in the Mac App Store. This makes that you get an error message when you try to download OS X Mavericks even when you are using it.
    Instead of downloading OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store, you can still download OS X Mavericks to reinstall OS X through OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 You will be able to download OS X Mavericks from the Mac App Store when your MacBook Pro uses the same version as all other Macs

    I intended to install windows on my macbook, but I removed Mac os X wrongly! Now I don't know how to install Mac again please help me.

    I still don't know which version of OSX you have but assuming it's 10.7 or 10.8 .....
    You need to press command-R (at the sound of the chime) to get into recovery, try that, if it does not work try command-option-R for Internet Recovery.

  • HT202328 Install mac os x 10.7 on  an external hard drive?

    I have a Mac Mini running OS 10.10.1. I have a few applications that have not been updated by their developers for compatibility with the latest OS X. Only solution would be to use a separate external HD with an earlier OS installed on it. I have the DVD install discs up to 10.6 that I used with my older Mac Mini model but have since then upgraded to the latest model. Problem is that I don't have a DVD drive in my Mac Mini. In my App Store there is a download option for Lion OS 10.7 but I can't download it because it won't let me. Is there any way to do this? I used to have a setup where I was operating 2 different OS.., one was on my main HD and the other external.
    Thanks

    Thank you so much for your response. My Mac Mini is a late 2012 model. I don't recall what OS it came installed with. Here's what I do know. There were some applications that never had an issue with until I upgraded to Mavericks. Then I eventually upgraded to Yosemite only to have a few more applications suddenly be incompatible. Most are games.
    It is a catch 22 situation because since I upgraded to Yosemite I am now using its new features as well as applications that were developed to work exclusively with this OS. So downgraded to an earlier OS is not an option. My only option is to install the latest OS (prior to Mavericks) on an external HD. I know that it is possible to have separate OS's installed on multiple drives/partitions because I've had this set up before. I had 2 external HD's and one was divided into 2 partitions. One partition had an identical copy of the latest OS which I used as an alternative start up disc and the other partition had a previous OS installed on it. Even then I had certain applications that were incompatible with the latest OS. In order to use these apps I would have to select the partition with the earlier OS as my startup disc and then restart my computer. I was constantly changing startup discs and the restarting between 2 OS's on a regular basis so I know that it's possible.

  • No destination disk seen when trying to re-install mac os on powerbook g4

    I wiped my drive clean and want to re-install mac os. When it gets to the screen with "select destination" there is no drive displayed. Please help!

    Again, you haven't said which model powerbook you have, so I don't know what version disc(s) you have. DU is on the installer OS X disc. Boot from your OSX installer disc by holding the C key down while powering up and inserting the disc. Once it has booted you'll have to go through a few steps to reach DU. I don't recall exactly what they are but you're looking for utilities. The link I gave you should walk you through from that point, though there are some options you might want to choose (like installing OS9 drivers) depending upon your model powerbook.

  • Problem installing Mac OSX on my new MacBook hard drive...

    Hi,
    i am beside myself again...(i just visited my local Genius bar this afternoon). Any help would be most appreciated! :o)
    i purchased a 2.5 inch SATA Fujitsu 120GB laptop hard drive for my new MacBook. Followed the awesome* instructions on "how to replace/upgrade hard drive", and took out the original Toshiba HD. What the instructions* failed to mention was that i would eventually need to use a Torx screwdriver (star-shaped) to remove the caddy/carriage from the Toshiba HD. Got that the next day and replaced the Toshiba 80GB with my new 120GB Fujitsu drive..., it slipped into place nicely but i did notice that the Toshiba had four short wires protruding out to the right of the contacts, which my new Fujitsu didn't have... hmmmm...?!
    anyways, tried to install Mac OSX on the new drive, booted up with the install disc... went thru' chosing the language (English), agreed to the second step... but when it came time to install, there was NO icon at all in the box where i am asked where i want to install it!!!
    so i go to disk utilities, and see that my Fujitsu HD is indeed recognized, but none of the buttons in first aid are active... so i can't check it.
    i figured that had to do with the four little wires, so i replaced the original Toshiba and made a reservation with Genius Bar to ask for assistance.
    this afternoon, i explained my problem and was told the four wires have NOTHING to do with it... Lawrence (the genius) told me to (actually, first he said Apple does not recommend my doing this... and that i should go to a 3rd party computer store such as Dino to get help!) go back to disk utilities and partition, then erase this drive and then i will see the icon for this drive in the install box.
    Well i did everything i was told to do and... still, there is no icon for my Fujitsu HD! :o(
    I was able to partition, after which there was a disc0 under the Fujitsu drive on the left side of the disk utilities. When i go to system profiler, and click on ATA... it too shows the Fujitsu drive... but i cannot install because there is NOTHING to click on at the installation step! the "continue" button is not active and only the "back" button is actively mocking me!!!
    i know many of you have successfully upgraded your hard drive... what am i doing wrong? Would a different brand work better? I know Seagate is quite popular, and OWC sells a Western Digital version as well as a Hitachi... do those four little wires make a difference? Would the Seagate come with those wires???
    i am going crazy... thanks, and sorry for the long post, just wanted to let you know what i've done!
    blue skies,
    ps. please feel free to email me at [email protected] if you think that would be better! :o)

    Hi,
    ...after getting back from school, my MacBook was STILL in the process of verifying and "supposedly" repairing... since i was gone for over 10 hours, i finally assumed the drive was either defective or just incompatible, and quit disk utility.
    ...this morning i went out and bought a new Seagate 120GB SATA (they didn't have 160GB SATA drives, only 160GB ultra-ATA drives) 2.5 inch HD. This one DID have those four wires to the right of the contacts... (i don't know how important they are), and after changing and exchanging the Toshiba/Fujitsu HDs, it was a breeze putting in the new Seagate drive.
    Erased > patritioned > and sure enough, the icon showed up and the biggest smile showed up on my face as i finished installing! :o)
    I contacted the original seller of my fujitsu hd (it was a 2.5 inch, 120GB, serial ATA notebook drive) and he was kind enough to say "just pack it up and send it back for a refund!" (minus shipping and re-stocking fees of course! :o)
    Just wanted to mention that, the fujitsu hd WAS recognized by disk-utility and at the bottom left of the window it said that the fujitsu was "GUID partitioned"..., so i am still scratching my head as to why it didn't work?!
    I want to thank everyone that offered advice, it was helpful and i feel more comfortable with my MacBook after this trying and very frustrating episode! :o)
    blue skies,

  • How to make a image file from Pre installed Mac osx ? "PLEASE HELP :("?

    hey guys ..Thanks u for the time.
    So i have this eMac which has crashed and i have got may hands on another eMac.. and it works
    ... the only problem is.. I can take my eMac to the working eMac to do Target Mode or any thing...
    So Help me..
    My question is .. Is there a way to make a .DMG image file from pre installed mac osx OR
    Is there a way to may a recovery disc??

    You can use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy everything from the working eMac onto the non-working eMac while the working eMac is running. If your eMac will still do target mode into the working one, you can download the above software, select the booted drive as the source drive, and your eMac's drive as the target, however it is possible this will not work.
    When you say your eMac crashed, what exactly happened?  It is possible that the hard drive in your eMac failed or is failing, so in order to get it running again you would need to replace the hard drive.  On the eMac, this repair is somewhat involved, and you have to be very careful because it exposes the CRT, which has several areas which can be extremely dangerous to touch if not properly handled.  CRTs retain a great deal of voltage, even when unplugged, sometimes for weeks, and they can give you a nasty shock if you touch them in the wrong place.
    Also keep in mind that cloning from the working computer to the non-working computer will ERASE any data that you have stored on that eMac, so if you don't have it backed up anywhere, you may want to attempt that with target mode before proceeding.
    Good luck!

  • I had previously purchased the programs "Pages" and "Numbers" and they are on my iPhone and iPad I was told that the programs would automatically copy a version of itself for the iMac to be running them but I don't see it installed. How can I install them

    I had previously purchased the programs "Pages" and "Numbers" and they are on my iPhone and iPad I was told that the programs would automatically copy a version of itself for the iMac to be running them but I don't see it installed. How can I install for free?  I see that I could go to the apple store and purchase them again but I belibve that since I had already purchased them; I would get a free copy for my Imac.  Do I got something confused here?  Please help.

    Whoever told you that was misinformed or lying. Those applications are sold separately for the iOS platform and the Mac platform.
    Go to the Mac App Store to purchase Pages and Numbers for your Mac. They're $20 each. If you are running an older version of Mac OS X that can't use the Mac App Store, you can purchase install media from Apple.
