HO DV7 3085dx problem

HI there,
I have an HP DV7 3085dx that is is just about 3 years old. Up until recently, I have had very few problems with the laptop, at least nothing that I could not fix myself. The problem started a month or so ago with a loose display LCD cable., which I was able to fix twice with no problems.
The third time I went to fix it (it had not been tucked away fully under one of the front panels on the laptop), something went wrong. I took everything apart step by step as I had before, in the same order that I had done before, fixed the cable, and went to put everything back together in the same way that I'd done before with no problems.
When I went to turn on the computer, it would turn on but with a blank screen, no sound and some of the touch sensor lights above the keyboard would not light up, but there was power to the computer. I shut it down, let it discharge and opened it back up, thinking I had maybe not connected the hard drive tight enough.
Checked everything before putting it back together. When I went to turn this time, it would not turn on at all. I used my husband's laptop to troubleshoot, and the HP website sugested a hard reset, which consisted of unplugging it, taking out the battery and holding the start button for 15 seconds. I did this, and nothing happened after I plugged it back in, nor when I replaced the battery. When I plug it in however, the port for the AC plug does light up.
I honestly don't know what else to do. THe warranty is long gone at this point. If anyone out there has any ideas, please let me know.
I tried the hard reset as mentioned above. I don't think it's a motherboard issue as those tend to beep when there is a problem.  My brother's friend mentioned the power supply unit inside the laptop?
HELP!

I would recommend using this troubleshooting document for your issue: http://goo.gl/LvXDk
There are a few more steps in there other than just a hard reset.
Let me know if any of those steps help to resolve your issue.

  • HP DV7-3085dx won't power up, seems the battery and charging is ok.. possible mother board problem?

Hi I recently received an HP DV7-3085dx from a friend of mine since he hadn't been using it for a while.
So, when I tried to turn it on for the first time, the power button wouldn't work, or the lap top itself wouldn't power on.
When I plug in the charger, AC adapter light turns on, and when I connect the battery, both the battery light and the AC light turns on fine.
However, there's no fan, or any light flashing when I press the power button as if it's dead.
    I've searched and tried:
    1. hard reset - pressing on the power button for a minute without any attachement and so on
    2. reseating ram and CMOS battery
    3. cleaning heatsink and re-applying thermal compound.
    4. tried turning on the laptop without hard drive.
However, none of those would solve the problem.
Could it be the faulty motherboard, fan or heatsink?
Or, does battery light on means the motherboard is safe, at least?
By the way, it seems like the battery charges just fine as after a while on an AC, the battery light turns off(signaling that it's fully charged)

Hello coolhair50, welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you've acquired your Notebook from a friend, that you're trying to get it to turn on and start up. That only the batter and charger appear to be working as the Notebook will not turn on. I will try to assist you with this.
You're on the correct path, the issue does appear to be hardware related from what you've attempted so far. The battery and charger appear to be fine.
What I would suggest starting with is this document: Troubleshooting Black Screen Displays with No Error Messages During Startup or Boot. It will guide you through testing the memory and hard drive. If all of that tests ok, then you're most likely looking at a motherboard issue.
You have a few options at that point. The first would be callling support to see what they could offer. HP Technical Support, North America 1-800-474-6836. For all other regions click here.
The second would depend on your own personal knowledge of Notebooks, but you could use the Maintenance and Service guide to look up possible compatible parts and how to replace them.
Please let me know how everything goes for you.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

  • HP dv7-3085dx Win7/64-bit Hanging/Crashing with WD My Book eSATA 1GB Attached

I have an HP dv7-3085dx, 500GB internal SATA, 6GB RAM, upgraded from Win7 Home Premium 64-bit to Win7 Ultimate, with a Western Digital 1GB MyBook attached to the eSATA port.  All the latest Windows Updates are installed as of yesterday (11/23).  I've noticed two problems related to this laptop running with the My Book attached, and wonder if others have similar issues and/or solutions:
    1) Several times in the few weeks since I've had this laptop, I've noticed that the external My Book becomes unusable if the laptop has gone to sleep and reawakened.  Here's what I mean by unusable:  (a) If I attempt to look at the drive's contents using Windows Explorer, I can see the top level directories/folders, but if I expand any of the folders, I get a green progress bar in the path area that seems to almost complete, but never reaches the end.  During this time, I can't navigate anywhere on the drive.  The only solution has been to restart both the laptop and the drive.  Then, all is well again.  (b) If I try to run any program that attempts to read from or write to the drive, it just hangs, and can be killed only via Task Manager. Again, a full restart of everything clears the problem.
If the laptop hasn't gone to sleep, the drive seems just fine...it can be navigated and used by applications.
    2) Today, after completing a full system backup to the My Book drive (using the Win7 Backup and Restore utility), I left the machine long enough that it went to sleep (a couple of hours). When I came back, I woke up the machine and started looking through e-mail (app and all data are on the internal drive, not the My Book).  I noticed that I heard the external My Book drive spin up and then promptly spin down again.  A few seconds later, as I was reading an e-mail, the system crashed (BSOD) with a STOP 0x00000050 Page Fault in Non-Paged Area.  I noticed that it was trying to write out the dump file, but was hung at that point (no disk activity, no dump progress).  So, just to see if the My Book presence was preventing the dump file from being written, I powered down the My Book.  Instantly, the dump file was written and the system restarted.  So, it appears that the My Book might have been responsible for both the blue screen and the prevention of dump writing.
I used this My Book drive on an older laptop running WinXP (using either a USB connection or an eSATA connection through a PC-Card), and never had this problem...even when the laptop would go to sleep and wake up.
Is this behavior pointing to an incompatibility between the HP laptop and the WD My Book, or is there potentially a problem with the eSATA port on the HP laptop?   This is the only eSATA device I have, so can't really test with other devices.
Any similar experiences, advice, or leads?

  • Dv7-3085dx hardware

I have a dv7-3085dx. The only problem I have with it is that the graphics are too slow for me Nvidia GeForce 230M. I have read that it is possible on certain models and higher levels of laptops that you are able to upgrade these. When I bought this laptop, it was a higher end at the time and was wondering if it was possible to be upgraded and what where my options in upgrades?

    Hi,
Basically you can, with a cost and I believe this cost may be more expensive than buying a new computer because you have to take into account:
New card price,  and WHERE you can buy it because laptop cards are not the same as desktop cards. You can't buy from any normal shop,
Need new system board (may be),
Need new cooling system because generally speaking more powerfull card pumps out more heat (you want more powerfull card don't you?).
May need new PSU because your current PSU may not suitbale to the card. (I ordered a machine with Nvidia card and I needed to order a 90W charger at the same time, not the normal 65W charger. They simply rejected my order).
    Labor cost.
    Many, many packets of Asprin.
    Hope this helps.

  • Quick Launch Buttons not working on dv7-3085dx

    Hello HP world.
I am having a problem that I cant fix it myself and it is driving me crazy.
I am very techy and usually always find a solution to any problem but this one got both of my feet locked.
My Quick Launch Buttons on my DV7-3085dx  Running Win7 64-bit.
Are not working. They were working fine since forever until 2 weeks ago I noticed the mute and wireless buttons remained red non stop? and they were not functionable. Almost as if they lost connection to the notebook.
This is what i have tried so far:
    - Hard reset (after i did this the red mute button and wireless went off, now only volume and media controls are on, still useless)
    - Updating the QuickLaunch Buttons Driver
    - Updating the BIOS
    - Reinstalling MediaSmart
    - New Chipset Driver
    - Installing latest IDT driver
    - probably other drivers and such which i cant remember but its been over a week that i have been reading online and it came down to this.
    I surrender!
    Please help me.
    Thank you in advance.

If they're not working after performing the System Recovery then it's a hardware problem.  Could a loose or damaged cable or circuit board.

  • My external usb mouse no longer works on my dv7-3085dx.

My HP Pavilion dv7-3085dx, running Windows 7 64-bit, is having issues recognizing the external usb mouse.  Normally the mouse will work a few seconds to minutes before the computer makes the sound that the usb has been unplugged (even thouugh it has not)  I have tested the mouse on all the usb ports and on several other computers to make sure it wasn't an issue with the mouse cord.  Furthermore, I have tried using several different usb mice with the same results.  I have also tried using other usb devices on my laptop (e.g. usb storage devices and cooling fan) with no issues to their performance and no usb device disconnect sound.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as using only the touchpad makes gaming more of a challenge than I'm ready for.

    Hi,
As per the issue you have mentioned it seems like the HID compliant mouse had been disabled .
Try to open device manager (Click on start type in device manager in Search programs and files  click on device manager ) and that will open new window device manager go to Mice and other pointing devices click on the small arrow next to Mice and other pointing devices  check to see if there is a down arrow on HID-compliant mouse if found right click on it and click on enable which will enable the Usb mouse
If you find the above steps help you resolve the issue please click on kudos.

  • Dv7 3085dx won't power on after adding 2nd hard drive

I'm attempting to add a 2nd drive to my laptop (dv7 3085dx). The drive is a Seagate Momentus 750GB drive (ST9750420AS). I purchased the drive caddy and connector from Newmodeus. The laptop will not power on after the drive is installed in the 2nd bay. Everything is fine if the drive is disconneted.
    Any ideas?

Are you absolutely sure you got the right caddy and cable from newmodeus? They sell several different ones for the dv7 series and they look similar but are not compatible with each other. I understand the reluctance to try hot-plugging it.

  • DV7 3085DX 2nd HDD Bay

I have been having a look at my DV7 3085DX and see that it has a second hdd bay but no connections to plug a 2nd internal hdd in.
Is it possible to add the connectors & activate the 2nd hdd bay? If so how can it be done?
Also I have noticed that connections exist inside for a tv tuner, is it possible to utilize this connection?
Any help or answers greatly appreciated.

Yes on at least the hard drive and theoretically yes on the tv tuner although that is pricey. You need the module and a special cable. I cannot find the part on the internet or this site but you could maybe call HP or even look on ebay. Here is the part you need to add a second drive. It is the caddy and a connector cable.

  • Dv7-3085dx and raid

I would like to set up raid on my laptop (dv7-3085dx ). I purchased and installed a new hard drive (same size).  But seeing that the Bios doesnt support.  Frustrating when I have a second drive in my gamming laptop but cant raid configure for speed.  I am new to raid but not computer maintenance.  So does my bios have to support raid?  From my reading I understood that windows could manage the raid configuration during a fresh installation?  Or am I wasting my time trying raid with this laptop?

You would be better off using a fast SSD drive.
Raid is a waste of time on a notebook.

anyone with any idea how to get these set-up disc to work please respond

A little more info besides "will not install" would help us to help you. For instance are you able/not able to boot from them. If you are able to boot from them where does the process fail-any error messages, etc?

  • Dv7 Keyboard problems

    Hello!
I have issues with my DV7 laptop computer ( Windows 8, if it helps )
Neither the numpad nor the function keys are working, every time I hit the num key there is only one beeping noise, but the keys wont work.
I have tried the hp assistant, installing all updates but the keys wont budge.
Before I contact the support I thought there might be a solution somewhere ... I used the search, but couldnt find a proper answer, move the topic, if the category isnt right.
    Thank you!

Thank you for your reply  !
Sorry I forgot to post the story of the problem
The numpads behaviour is odd, because when I use the numlock key, there is a beep and then the numpad works, as if the numlock was switched off. When I press numlock a second time, I can hear a beep with a higher pitch, and the numkeys lose every functionality. Only /*-+ work, when switched off, enter works always. Either way, I cant get the 1234567890 keys to work correctly.
Your proposal did the trick for the media keys  , unfortunately not for the numpad.
And if I remember correctly, the numpad never actually worked. ( germany is the location, I forgot to add that )

hello, ive got a dv7 4197cl, ive tried a couple of heavy games on it, but both with the same problem,..... game runs normally but the sound stops by secs, ive heard its called latency caused by HDD, ran an app to check the latency of HDD, but its running perfectly :/
oh, btw, while playing, dunno why norton lets me know that only 1 of those 4 cores is running at 100%, and other 3 are like sleeping.... 2 or 3% of using
is that normal?, can i distribute it to make it work with 4 cores?, so it would run balanced

     Hello,
Please update your BIOS,Video graphics and sound drivers.
The best and easiest way to do this is to run teh HP Support assistant and have it "Analyze" your PC. It will then suggest the critical updates for your unit. This should help with the gaming experience.

  • HP Dv7 -- Power problem

Ok, so I've got a weird one.  Here goes...
A few weeks ago, I started noticing that my AC adaptor was making a high-pitched beeping noise, and that while doing so it was not charging the battery.  So, I figured the AC adaptor was going bad.  After about a week, I decided that I would just order a new one, and a new battery as well (since the old battery was OLD and not holding a charge well anymore).
So, on Wednesday of this week I received the battery in the mail, put it in the laptop, and began charging it up with the old AC adaptor.  Seemed to work fine.  I was then out working all day, the computer was in sleep mode, but when I tried to start it up, it was as if the battery were completely drained.  I tried to use my old AC adaptor to plug it in and charge it up, but now the AC adaptor had gone completely caput... would NOT stop beeping, and would not charge.
So, FINALLY, yesterday my new AC adaptor arrived.  My excited quickly changed to frustration when I plugged it in, and it STILL would not charge.  Here is where the weird part comes in....
I know the AC adaptor is fine -- it runs another laptop I have with no problems.  The Dv7 will run and turn on with my old battery, but will not charge with the new AC adaptor.  However, when I put in the NEW battery, it does nothing.  And when I have the new battery installed and plug it in to the AC adaptor, I hear a slight ticking noise coming from the battery area.  The front LED lights flash (about once per second), and if I press the power button, it acts like it tries to start up, but it won't.
This is very strange to me, because clearly the AC adaptor works... and it is getting power to the computer (or else there would be no difference in how it responds to pushing the power button if plugged in or not),.  It acts like it tries to charge (with the clicking noise) but it won't.  My guess is that there is some sort of short, but I really have no idea... I just want it to work!!  Please help!!!

  • HP Envy dv7 7250us problems installing 2nd Hard Drive

I recently cloned my 1TB HDD to an SSD (500GB) or basically restored to it through Acronis, and it finally worked, but then I tried to install the 1 TB original drive in the 2nd Drive Bay, but when the 2nd connector is plugged into the second SATA slot, the power button doesn't work.  I disconnect the plug and the power button works again.  I couldn't find anything in the BIOS setup that you have to turn on to recognize the second drive.  Any clues?

I did the switch out of the long 2nd connector and the connector/adapter that came with the tray (short like the original one) didn't work either.  I hope it's not, but I suspect the connector receptor on the motherboard would be the next problem to think about.  Something with it is making the power switch not connect.  I don't know, when I disconnect the 2nd connector, it power's/boots right up.

Based on what you said, it seems to me that your laptop drivers have not been install correctly. Follow this link
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&destPage=pfinder&dlc=en&lc=en&product=4079...
Choose your operation system and download any drivers required. But i suggest you to allow HP to scan your system for updating drivers, as HP Laptops have so may variants, so it is difficult to figure out which driver is correct. My personal experiences with HP Support technicians guessing of which driver is required for my system.
    I hope this will help.
