Hold Switch During Reset -- Unnecessary?

This isn't really a request for help -- just want to point out something I've noticed. Turning the hold switch on and off before resetting an iPod nano (as Apple recommends) is not strictly necessary. If you skip that step and just hold down the menu button and the center button simultaneously, in my experience, this always works. (Don't try it yet -- read the rest of this post, first.)
So why is the hold switch toggling even necessary? When I realised it works without it, I started skipping that step when I reset my iPod. Within about five syncs (some of them requiring resets due to the sync-freeze bug), my iPod got corrupted and had to be restored. And it happened again soon after.
This could be a total coincidence, but I began to wonder whether the hold switch thing has the effect of putting the file system into a safe-to-reset mode. Since that thought occurred to me, I have never failed to do the hold switch thing first, and so far my iPod has not been recorrupted.
Has anyone else had a similar corruption experience with omitting the hold switch move? Or do you have some other theory for why Apple recommends it when it doesn't seem to be strictly required?

They tell people to toggle the hold switch so that they make sure it is not in the locked position when they try the reset, otherwise it would not work.
I have never toggled the hold switch when I reset an iPod and I have owned 7 iPods, non have had an issue when being reset.

  • My ipod nano is frozen, but my hold switch is broken so I can't reset it.

I have an 8gb ipod nano. When I plugged it into my computer to sync it it said I had to restore it.  I clicked restore, but it said the ipod couldn't be found and then my ipod froze. I can't reset it because my hold switch no longer works and toggling it doesn't do anything.  Is there a way to fix it?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
When it says place the iPod in recovery mode
Place the iPod in recovery mode using one of these programs:
    For PC
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    or
    http://joshuabailey1997.wordpress.com/2010/09/02/recboot-v1-3/
    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot
    and
    RecBoot tip
RecBoot may have problems on 64X windows, then try:
Tenorshare ReiBoot – Enter & Exit iPhone, iPad, iPod Recovery Mode with a Single Click
    For MAC or PC
    The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
    Installs blootware on PC too
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • I tried to restore my 120 gb iPod and got an error 1413 message - "cannot restore iPod". I started to reset turning the hold switch on and off and now my iPod seems to be permanently locked.

I tried to restore my 120 gb iPod and got an error 1413 message - "cannot restore iPod". I started to reset turning the hold switch on and off and now my iPod seems to be permanently locked. I had been having trouble syncing music, When I tried to sync, iTunes said it didn't recognize my iPod, even though I was on the iPod page in iTunes which showed the model number and the serial number of my iPod

I am having essentialy the same problem, but my iPod came from a PC and is now on a PC. The person who gave me the iPod didn't give me the wall adapter piece, so I bought a "Griffin" brand that was said to be compatible with this model. When I first plugged it into the wall, the Apple appeared with a bar underneath as though it was loading the new software. When the bar got to the end, the "plug into the wall" icon reappeared, but when I plug it in to the wall now, that icon is the only thing that shows, even after resetting and trying to run diagnostics.
When I doc the iPod on a charger I have or plug the USB into my computer and "reset" it, a battery with a charge icon appears, but there is no "motion" in the icon so it doesn't appear to be charging. The screen eventually goes back to the apple then to the "plug it into the wall" icon. HELP!!! Is is possible the wall adapters isn't the right one? Should I be charging through a firewire cable instead (which I also don't have...)?

  • 5G ipod hold switch doesn't work during video

Often, when I start playing a video, the hold switch has zero effect; it never locks the controls. Then later, when I start playing music, the hold switch starts working again. I have seen this behavior enough that I now believe it is a software bug, and not a hardware issue with my iPod.
Any truth to this? Or am I seeing a hardware anomaly and I should swap it out (its under 30 days).

Switched it out at the apple store, hardware was defective....

You might want to try "The Five Rs". Resetting it is the first step, so you can start at #2.

  • IPod Classic 160gb hold switch problem

Sorry if this has been asked and answered before, but my searches were coming up a bit short. I've got a friend who purchased a 160GB classic, and since buying it she has been unable to use the hold switch to keep buttons from getting pressed and turning the iPod on while sleeping (say, in a backpack, etc.).
I personally just restored the software to 1.1.1 and have done several resets, etc. I have been successful in getting the device to hold while off a total of 4 times. What happens is that you can put the device to sleep either by holding play/pause, or using the sleep menu item, and that works fine. The problem is when you then try to lock it in sleep, it turns on, and stays on indefinitely. While in this "on and locked" state, it's not playing music or really doing anything other than displaying the menu.
Any help is appreciated. I did nothing but talk up the iPod to her until she went and bought one, now she's regretting her purchase.
    Thanks in advance.

A restore would have ruled out the possibility of corrupted software/data. So at this point, we can be certain that the hold switch is faulty and needs to be replaced. Either that or replace the entire iPod.
    Here is Apple's repair pricing.

There are also third party services out there that will cost less. Just Google for "iPod repair" and you should get a number of hits.

  • Hold Switch Issues

The last few times I've used my iPod mini, I've noticed that the hold switch isn't working as it should. While the hold switch is seemingly "on", I have been able to change the volume, pause the song, access the menus, etc. As far as I can tell, the switch is always pushed as far over as it can be. I can usually combat the problem by resetting the iPod, but it comes back within the next few hours. I've taken good care of the mini, it has never been dropped, and there are no visible signs of trauma to the product.
Is this problem enough to warrant a replacement mini? Also, is it possible that I could get a refund on the purchase price of my iPod instead of a replacement, because this is the third mini I've had with problems (battery life, skipping songs etc), and I am extremely unhappy with the faults in the product.
    Thankyou for your help.
1st Gen blue iPod mini   Windows XP

Wait a minute Timo_T and Steve... It sounds like what you're talking about is the mode that iPod sleeps, light or deep. If you turn on your iPod within a short period since last use (I'm not sure how long, maybe 24 hours) it comes instantly to life. But, if you don't use it for an extended period, say... over 24 hours, then it goes into deep sleep. Now, when you turn it on it will need to boot (Apple screen). To turn it on from this mode requires a button push (select). This is because the iPod is trying to best conserve power, and it takes a trickle to power to maintain the contents of memory.
This is not a problem, you just were not aware of it.
I make no predictions on why the iPod was running in your pocket.

  • Hold Switch wont work

my ipod mini's hold switch dont work, when ever i switch it on, i can still skip track, change volume, well everything basicly. anyone have any suggestions to the problem?

    Hello,
Try to do a Reset before you plug your iPod with the Wall Charger. If it does not work, I am afraid you may need a battery replacement. You can have a replacement from apple shop or a 3rd party supplier (DIY)

  • Hold switch button

If I turn the hold switch on (while I am listening to music)to disable the ipod buttons, eventually the song will pause, is there something I should do or shold not?

    Welcome to the forums.
Ok, first off, check the make sure that when you are listening, that you do not pull out the headphones. Even slightly. The iPod has a function built in that when you pull out the headphones, the music pauses.
Secondly, if that doesnt work, try resetting your iPod. do this by:
    1) Turn hold on
    2) Turn hold off
    3) Hold down center and menu buttons
    4) Wait till iPod restarts, and apple logo appears
    5) Enjoy
Dont worry, you wont loose anything on your iPod by resetting it.

  • Hold switch wont turn off.

*My hold switch is turned off but it is somehow still on? I have to hold down a button and keeping holding it down while scrolling to do anything. Its really weird.*
    *please help*

Have you tried Resetting your iPod? Hold down the MENU and SELECT (centre) buttons for five or ten seconds until you see the Apple logo appear then pressing any button should take you to the usual menu. If that doesn't work then try restoring your iPod, this will erase the hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings so make sure you have all your songs backed up in iTunes: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings

  • Hold Switch is stuck

My hold switch on my ipod is stuck, i can still move the switch itself but it is stuck in the hold position i have tried to reset it many times but it wont work how do i take it off hold plz help

You can also try to restore your iPod. Or you can simply try connecting your iPod to your computer and just disconnecting it. That might refresh the iPod. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL OF YOUR FILES BACKED UP!!

  • "Hold" switch on nano is frozen

The "hold" switch on my nano is frozen. It will NOT move. It is in the "on" position, not
hold." BUT ... when I pick the playlist I want and tap the wheel to begin the music ... the nano also freezes. I can't reset it because the toggle switch won't work. The only thing that works is to let the battery completely run down, recharge it, and then everything works fine ... until the next time.
Anybody know how to "unfreeze" the switch??

thanks for the info on how to fix it when it is stuck on hold, mine did that today too and my boyfriend wanted to take it apart to fix it, lol, I told him NO WAY. I will try these suggestiins and see if they work. I would prefer not to restore if I don't have to, I would hate to lose all my music on there.

  • Hold switch not functional?

I cannot anymore turn on the hold switch of my 5th gen. iPod: the lock symbol does not appear on the screen even though the switch slides to the lock position. The device is neither locked: I can use it as normal even though it should be locked. Is this a hardware or software failure? Resetting does not change anything.

    Hello Tuomas,
If no luck on the Reset, have tried restoring it via iTunes? Keep in mind that restoring the iPod will erase all the content from the iPod and set it back to its original default settings.
    [Restoring iPod to factory settings|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339]
If restoring the iPod has no effect, then the problem is more likely a hardware issue with the hold switch itself and will need to be serviced and replaced.

  • Hold Switch Not Responding

No matter how many times I toggle the Hold Switch, my iPod will not work on it's own. It will only work when docked with my iBook.
    Any suggestions?

try a reset.. PUSH AND HOLD the menu button and the middle button at the same time for 10 seconds.. it may not work the first time. you may have to try it a few times before it will work..

  • Trouble with the Hold Switch

I was using the Hold switch without a problem since I got my mini last June. Just recently the Hold switch starting acting up. First it was staying engaged after I switched it off - I know this because I can connect it to my computer and when it is recognized and lights up, I can see the locked icon. After I disconnect it from the computer the screen is blank and doesn't respond - can't reset it either. After an hour or so though it finally seems to become unstuck and I find it turned on by itself.
Now the latest "mind of it's own" thing is that while I'm playing songs, the locked icon will come on intermittenly. I've looked for articles and questions but don't see this problem. Any suggestions?

For a couple of weeks I worked around this by turning
off the hold switch about an hour before I wanted to
use it, and it would turn on.
I had to charge it this weekend, and since, I can't
get it out of the hold mode. Again I can tell it's
locked because when I connect it to the computer (and
the hold switch is off, I can see the locked icon.
Any body else experience this kind of hold switch
    problem??
I am having a problem with my ipod 4th gen. It will not get out of hold. The closed lock stays in the upper bar of the iPod.
I toggle and toggle - to no avail. Help. I do not want to buy another. I got it 12/2004.
