Hold Switch Not Holding

I always use the hold switch on my 5G iPod. I usually use the iPod in school and use the stock cloth case that it came with. This works fantastically, but recently, the hold switch is still on HOLD, but if anything rubs against the touchpad, it wakes up for a split second and turns on the backlight until the 5 second cooldown.
This is very annoying and it happens quite often. It drains the battery within the first 2-3 hours of music play. I like the backlight and it is obviously some kind of defect, so I shouldnt have to just "turn off the backlight" or something else for a fix. I have only had this a few months now.
Has anyone ever experienced this? I searched the forums and didnt see any threads relating to this topic.
I will probably go to the apple store, but it is a fairly long way away from where I live, so I was hoping someone may have a suggestion on the forums.
Thanks,
Dan

  • Nano 4th gen hold switch not working

Hello. I just bought a used nano 4th gen on eBay. The hold switch is not working - the click wheel remains active and no lock icon appears in the upper right corner of the screen. It's on the latest firmware 1.04 and I've done a restore twice already.
The seller claims the hold switch did work before he sent it. Is there anything I can try to get it to work? It's out of warranty.
    Thanks
    David

  • Hold switch not functional?

I cannot anymore turn on the hold switch of my 5th gen. iPod: the lock symbol does not appear on the screen even though the switch slides to the lock position. The device is neither locked: I can use it as normal even though it should be locked. Is this a hardware or software failure? Resetting does not change anything.

    Hello Tuomas,
If no luck on the Reset, have tried restoring it via iTunes? Keep in mind that restoring the iPod will erase all the content from the iPod and set it back to its original default settings.

If restoring the iPod has no effect, then the problem is more likely a hardware issue with the hold switch itself and will need to be serviced and replaced.

  • Hold Switch Not Responding

No matter how many times I toggle the Hold Switch, my iPod will not work on it's own. It will only work when docked with my iBook.
    Any suggestions?

try a reset.. PUSH AND HOLD the menu button and the middle button at the same time for 10 seconds.. it may not work the first time. you may have to try it a few times before it will work..

  • Hold button not "holding" or "locking" my ipod

my 80gb ipod Video (nano??) wont go on "hold" i was messing with the screen lock and after that it wont go on "hold" or "lock" is there any way to make it lock again without resetting it? its very frustrating when i cant lock it:/

If none of the 5 R's are able to resolve the issue, it's likely a hardware issue, meaning you'll need to have the iPod serviced/replaced either by Apple or a third party service.

  • Hold Switch On and Off not working - Always ON

    Hi,
I am having a serious problem with Hold Switch which is all the times in ON condition though I am moving right and left. None of the buttons are working because its in Locked state. Hold switch is not working. Is it a product related issue where in I need to go to store or is there any way to make it work.

Well it used to be that the iPods were not all that hard to open, especially with some simple plastic opening tools. However the new Classic line feature a brand new case design that to the best of my knowledge, no one has figured out how to open without breaking the case pieces. This is why if you look at many of the third parts battery sellings and iPod repair places, none are yet selling replacement batteries due to the inability to get into the ipod without ruining the case.
That said, if you do have a Classic, then it is obviously still under warranty since it just came out. Therefore, I would hit up your local Apple store or send it in if you don't have one near by. The hold switch not working is a warranty issue that they should cover.

  • Hold Switch problemo

my hold switch is refusing to work. whenever i try to listen to my ipod with the hold button on the lock key symbol (in top left hand corner) flickers on and off and my ipod starts to skip just like a cd player. also whenever i turn my ipod off and turn the hold switch to Hold position my ipod automatically turns on again.

I disagree as an extension of apple service the apple store should offer support and repair options from their stores or at least through other lines but not really sure. But Best Buy is usually pretty good and you probably best off trying to get them to do something than apple. Did you try restoring your ipod with the ipod updater yet? http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60944

  • Using the hold switch is crashing my iPod

Okay, I just got the 8gig 4th gen iPod last week.
I stuck it into the iHome and listened it for a while, ignoring the message that said the ipod cannot charge from this device.
I pulled it out, and it went all fritz on me, starting to turn on on its own (on about 10 minute intervals), and I turned it off every time it did. Sometimes my keys didn't work, so I tried everything, including holding the menu and the center button.
After failing to reset, I slid the Hold switch to HOLD and back again, and this time it worked.
It worked on restarting my iPod, but now every time I turn the Hold switch off (not when I'm putting it on hold), the iPod restarts. How can I fix this?

Okay it seems like our iPod might be frozen so try holding the center and play buttons together for about 10 seconds. That would basically restart it. If you are able to turn it on again and you still don't have your stuff then it should be on the computer so just restore and sync it.

  • Classic: will not recharge; apple logo flashes every few seconds then fades away; have tried the 'reboot' advice i.e. move hold switch on and off, hold menu and center button, no success.  have tried this many times and kept connected for several hours.

I have a classic, several years old.
It will not recharge; the Apple logo flashes every few seconds then disappears.
I have tried the 'reboot' advice i.e. move the Hold switch on and off, hold the Menu and Center buttons, no success.
I have tried this many times and kept the ipod connected for several hours.  And I have tried two different cords, one connected to the desktop computer, one connected to electrical outlet.

  • Hold switch does not keep on - is the switch broken?

Hi. My faithful 5th gen. iPod started to stand on its own - it didn't like to obey my wish for keeping hold switch on or off. It is on, all the time. So, is this a sign for independence or resignation? In other words, is the switch physically broken or not? I've done all those restarts etc. Regards, T.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have performed all the R's except Restore. When I try to restore the process begins, the status window opens, then an "Auto Play" window opens in the upper left side of my computer screen and I can see song titles from my Library flashing by. After a few seconds the "Auto Play" window closes, the status window closes, and and error message window appears saying that the restore process has ended due to an unknown problem. I've tried to run the Restore process several times with the same result. I am running iTunes 7.0.1.8 and the summary info in iTunes says that my iPod is up to date. Where do I go from here?

  • HT1320 my ipod nano is stuck in the lock position, my  hold switch will not turn off even when I move it, I have restored it and it came back on in the hold position

My ipod naaIno is stuck in the lock position, my hold switch will not turn off even when I move it.  I have tried restoring it and resetting it and it still comes back on in the hold/locked postion.  It will only play when placed on a docking station and then I cant scroll to pick songs, I can only go to next song using buttons on docking station.

You will need to have the hold switch replaced.

  • The hold switch on my iPod classic is broken, so basically my iPod is always locked and my iPod is unusable, how can I fix this?

The hold switch is locking my ipod no matter what side it's on, if I mess with it it will sometimes 'unlock' for about two seconds, but that's about it. Definitely not enough time to find a song to play. Help?

The hold switch is likely faulty and will need to be replaced.  Apple will exchange your iPod out for a refurbished one of the same size and generation for a flat fee.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
There are several third party services out there who will actually swap out the lock switch for a new one for a much cheaper cost.
Otherwise, you can purchase the replacement part and put it in yourself using one of the many guides found online.

  • My ipod nano is frozen, but my hold switch is broken so I can't reset it.

I have an 8gb ipod nano. When I plugged it into my computer to sync it it said I had to restore it.  I clicked restore, but it said the ipod couldn't be found and then my ipod froze. I can't reset it because my hold switch no longer works and toggling it doesn't do anything.  Is there a way to fix it?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
When it says place the iPod in recovery mode
Place the iPod in recovery mode using one of these programs:
    For PC
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    or
    http://joshuabailey1997.wordpress.com/2010/09/02/recboot-v1-3/
    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot
    and
    RecBoot tip
RecBoot may have problems on 64X windows, then try:
Tenorshare ReiBoot – Enter & Exit iPhone, iPad, iPod Recovery Mode with a Single Click
    For MAC or PC
    The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
    Installs blootware on PC too
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • IPod nano gen 4 forward button won't work, and the hold switch won't either.  I've tried restoring it and it didn't fix the problem. Any suggestions?

The forward button won't work and the hold switch doesn't either.  I tried restoring it, but that didn't work.

Restore to factory settings.new iPod if you have not yet already. If still problem time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
