Holding Down 0 (zero) Key To Factory Restore Doesn't Work

Hello,
I've been trying to restore my laptop to it's factory settings (fresh install), holding down the 0 key won't let me boot into the recovery wizard. I've also tried with F8, and F12. F8 takes me to the advanced boot options, from there I tried going into 'Repair My Computer' but then I don't see the Toshiba Recovery option.. just the normal restore options.
I'm not sure if my recovery partition is corrupt, I do however have the E: (data) partition and I can see that both the folders 'HDDRecovery' and 'PFiles' are there.
I haven't created my 4 recovery discs before (when I first got the laptop), is it too late to create them now? I can still normally login into Windows.
Here's a screenshot of my Disk Management:

Thank you!

Hi Ok I can't read your language and neither one of you has posted your model number which can be found on the bottom of your laptop. I don't know what operating system you have or any thing else about your PC. Toshiba has two methods to restore to factory settings if you have W7. I don't know much about W8. On W7 you have a hidden partion that has back to factory that you can use and you should have made recovery discs that you can use. You need to read your user guild to see how to use the recovery method. Different models have different ways to restore back to factory settings. I can give you the link Toshiba has here on the forum
ackup and Recovery
If these steps haven't fixed the problem, the final step is to back up your data and perform a recovery. A recovery will return a laptop to its original, out-of-box state and eliminates software as a possible cause. If the hard drive has become corrupted or if you have a virus, this is a great fix. While you may be hesitant to perform a recovery, if you're considering having your laptop serviced, a recovery is a necessary step of the repair process. In addition, we'll discuss options of backing up your data.
9. Backing up your data
If you were able to enter Safe Mode in step 5, backing up your data should be easy. To use Safe Mode to back up your data, perform the following.
Enter Safe Mode as you did in step 5.
Connect a USB flash drive or external hard drive.
Copy your important files to the flash drive or external drive.
If you were not able to enter Safe Mode, you may want to try rescuing your files. This method is only for advanced users. If it's too difficult for you, you may consider asking someone to help or taking your laptop to a professional.
10. Recovery
As a final step, try performing a recovery. As mentioned previously, recovering a laptop to its original, out-of-the-box state is a great way to eliminate software as a possible cause of the problem. Note that doing a system recovery will return the laptop to its default conditions, completely wiping all data, documents, settings, and applications. Remember to backup your data!
With the computer turned off, press and hold the '0' (zero) key.
Continuing to hold it, press the power button.
Continue holding '0' until the recovery utility begins.
If you have trouble starting the recovery procedure, you may consider ordering recovery media. If the recovery does not fix the problem, your laptop may not be booting due to actual hardware failure. Please contact customer support to set up a repair.

What if Factory Restore doesn't work?

As a last ditch effort, try the following:
Power off the AirPort for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for another 10-12 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort
Release the reset button after the hold period, and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart
At this point, the amber should be blinking slowly, and you should be able to reconfigure it again using AirPort Utility on your Mac
If a factory default reset does not work, the AirPort is defective and will need to be replaced.

  • How can you insert foreign letters into pages in Maverick? The old option of holding down the key has disappeared.

After downloading Mavericks on the MacBook Air, the ability to hold down a key and insert a foreign language symbol or letter disappeared. How can foreign language alphabet symbols/letters be inserted into Pages?

Are you still using the US keyboard layout?
Pending a solution to restore the Character Picker, you can use the traditional option key shortcuts for many characters, e.g. option + e, then e produces é.
Plus you can use Edit > Special Characters to bring up the Character Viewer.

  • Troubles with remote installation on older macbook- problem arises when I restart computer while holding down option key

I've got remote disk sharing set up so I can upgrade my operating system from my desktop using snow leopard CD. My Macbook is able to read disk remotely and all goes well following directions for installation until I am supposed to hold down option key while restarting computer. When I do this, only my hard drive is an option for start up, not the hard drive and the disk as it shows in the instructions and pop up menu for start up. Why? What am I doing wrong with the start up? Also, it says I should be able to choose the Airport network, but my computer automatically connects and anyways, that is also not an option from the pop up menu (to choose a network and enter password), that pop up menu section doesn't show up at all, it goes right to choosing disc icon where only mac hard drive, not mac os x install, is an option. Does this make sense? I'm giving up for now.
    Thanks.

The only known way to make it work on an external drive is by first installing Windows onto an internal drive, then cloning the install to an external Thunderbolt drive. Thunderbolt is seen as an extension of the internal bus, so Windows doesn't see it as an external device.

  • HELP!  Is there a way to change column information in iTunes such as name of artist, genre etc, other than deleting them one at a time? Such as the way you delete an entire group of songs by holding down control keys or selecting the Select All command.

HELP!  Is there a way to change column information in iTunes such as name of artist, genre etc, other than deleting them one at a time? Such as the way you delete an entire group of songs by holding down control keys or selecting the Select All command. Thanks.

If you select all the songs you want to change, Be it one song or an akbum, or an Artist, Or Genre, or playlist. Then Right mouse click  and Get Info. You then get a slightly different from normal Get Info box as this is the One for Multiple items.
In there have a look at the tags and see if the one you want to changes is in there. There are a few tabs so if for example you wanted to change the Media Type from Home Movie to Movie go to the Options tab and select Movie and OK and it will change the whole selection.

    Hi artdiva28
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
First go to *System Preferences > Startup Disk* > select the *Mac OS X 10.5. on Macintosh HD* > click the Lock > hit the Restart button.
Then if the iMac is still having trouble starting up, insert your Install Disk and restart holding the Option key. In Startup Manager select the Install Disk and boot into it, choose your language, skip the Installer and go up on the menu bar to Utilities and open Disk Utility. In Disk Utility select your Macintosh HD and hit the Repair button. Once finished note any errors and what was repaired for future reference. Quit Disk Utility and restart once again holding the Option key boot back into the Macintosh HD and eject the Install Disk.

Sorry ... I read but was unfortunately distracted from your original post.  You have a system that came with Lion.  The Lion that is on your system is only for your computer and cannot be downloaded from the app store again because you never purchased it officially through the App Store.
Try this for making an external USB/DVD copy of Recovery on an external disk.  internet is still required for reinstall, though, I believe: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848.  But at least you have a separate Recovery Partition if you ever need a fully new and empty internal disk.
Your assumption is incorrect. Although he may not be able to download it from the App store he can download it directly for the Apple servers using the recovery partition on his original drive.
All you have to do is start the install routine and then point the install to an external hard drive. Once the download is finished the computer will reboot to start the install. At that reboot disconnect the external drive so the install can not start. Boot the computer back into the OS on the internal hard drive, which is what will happen automatically once the external drive is disconnected. Then connect the external and copy the files from it that were downloaded. Right click on that downloaded package file and select Show contents. In the contents of that package is a file called InstallESD.DMG. Copy that file out of the package and burn it down to a DVD or USB thumb drive and you now have the Full Lion Installer. I have several of them laying around on different hard drives and 2 USB thumb drives which I have used to reinstall Lion on my 15" MBP.
Sorry OP I should of just typed this out in my first post.

If you're pushing Option at the exact moment you're clicking the Dock icon, it's supposed to do that. Wait until just after clicking it.

Back up all data before proceeding.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled NO
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered. You can then quit Terminal. Log out or restart the computer.

  • My return key on Macbook pro doesn't work

My return key on Macbook Pro stopped working, also the shift key

    Hello there,
It sounds like the return key is not working on your computers built in keyboard. I would use these steps from the following article to help isolate and resolve the issue:
Try logging into a different user account. If the issue does not occur when logged into a different user account, then troubleshoot for software issues.
You may have accidentally set an option that changes how your keyboard operates.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Dictation & Speech, and then click “Text to Speech.” If “Speak selected text when the key is pressed” is selected, deselect it or press Set Key to select another key.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, and then click Keyboard. Make sure Slow Keys is turned off. If Slow Keys is on, you must hold down a key longer than usual before it’s recognized.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Language & Text, and then click Input Sources. Select the checkbox next to Keyboard & Character Viewer, and then select “Show Input menu in menu bar.” Open the Input menu and make sure the correct keyboard layout is selected. To see the keyboard layout, choose Show Keyboard Viewer from the Input menu.

    Thanks anyway for your help.
But allow me to extend to you a simple reflexion about the jailbreak (even if my iPhone wasn't... except if my little cousin jailbreaked without me noticing the advantages or disadvantages) : Would you refuse an alcoholic trying to go to rehab ? Would you really let someone trying to restore a cellular phone die without it, because he went on the bad side a couple of years ?
Not a great analogy, but this is a user-to-user forum, and Apple will not allow discussion of jailbreaking; if someone tried to help with jailbreaking the message would be deleted. However, if you have a jailbroken phone Apple will generally not block a discussion of how to unjailbreak it. The only problem is that not all jailbroken phones can be restored successfully; it depends on the method of jailbreaking (which I can't discuss without THIS message being deleted).
