Holding home button for five seconds closes the application?

I've read this a few times by doing a search. Where can I find this info on Apple's site that explains it?
How exactly does it work? Closes the application? Say I close Safari that way-- when I open it again should I get a blank page or will it be at the last page visited again?

There have been a few cases reported where mail consumes power even after you tap the Home button; as if it is running in a loop. If your battery life seems very short you might try force-quitting mail to see if that fixes it. But other than that there is no reason to force-quit applications, and there are reasons not to (e.g., if you force-quit mail while it is retrieving messages it may leave the server lock set, so other mail clients cannot retrieve your mail until the server times out.)

Same thing happened to me today. I wasn't even using the phone for the past 6 hours and suddenly I can't connect to the internet, none of my internet apps would work - nothing. I tried to call AT&T from the iphone and it locked up - couldn't turn it off, change to the home screen - nada - brick.
Did the Home/Power button thing and that worked but this I've only had this phone for about 4 weeks and it's locked up more times than my 3GS did the whole two years I had it! Ridiculous

My macbook will not boot.  It goes to a blue screen after the logo and wheel goes off.  I have taken the battery out and held the on/off button for five seconds and reset the PRAM.  I have the the original os disk but have not put it in for fear of losing un backed op data.
    Thanks

You won't lose any data unless you erase your hard drive.
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c"key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it.When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've selected the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.

  • Hi I was using whatsapp on my iPhone5.I was not able go to the main menu by pressing the center button so I hold on to the button for 2 seconds. Then the whole display turned out to be black

I was not able go to the main menu from whatsapp by pressing the center button so I hold on to the button for 2 seconds. Then the whole display turned out to be black & white. how can i fix it?

    Hello monicaa003,
Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
If your iPhone display turned black and white after holding down the Home button for 2 seconds, first try pressing the Home button again to go to the main menu (Home screen.)
For reference, holding down the Home button for 2 seconds will trigger Siri if that feature is enabled:
    About Siri - Apple Support
If pressing the Home button doesn't return you to the main menu, try restarting or resetting your iPhone:
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Additionally, if Whatsapp is not responding or working as expected, see the troubleshooting steps at this link:

    To restore from backup see:

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the iPod backup that iTunes makes.

Sometimes I have to hold power button for 10 seconds for it to shut off then back on. Sometimes holding the power button for a second is enough for it to come back on.

I took it to the Genius Bar, and they identified it as a hardware issue. Just got it back today. Parts replaced were:
620-5629 Display Module — Symptom: Distored/blurred/focus video issue
605-3284 Top Case with Keyboard — Symptom: specific key(s) do not work
So far so good. I'd suggest taking it in and not trying to work around it — it's a rare hardware issue (given the number of threads about it) and should be replaced.

  • "Press power button for five seconds to re-start computer" sign????

I was using my computer and all of a sudden a black sign poped saying that I had to press the "power button" for five seconds to re-start my computer. I tried to ignore the sign but I couldn't. So I had to press the button. My computer turned off so I waited for a bit to turn it back on like I usually do. When it re-started, I had a new sign saying that my computer was turned off improperly. Is this normal? And why could this have happened?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
What you saw was your MacBook having what is termed a Kernel Panic. Information on what a Kernel Panic is can be found here:
    *What's a "kernel panic"? (Mac OS X)*
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227
Should you be worried? If it happens often the you should have it looked at. Kernel Panics are often (not always) attributed to memory module faults but anything (hardware and/or software) can cause them.
If you do not get a Kernel Panic again then I wouldn't worry about it and carry on working as normal.

  • My ipod touch has frozen with a white screen. None of the buttons will work to turn it off or take any action. Holding down buttons for 10 seconds plus does not work.Help

My ipod touch has frozen with a white screen. The on/ff and sleep buttons will not work whether pressed for a moment or held for more than 10 seconds as per help pages. When connected to computer it is not recognised and no indication in "devices".It has been working perfectly from Christmas until now. Was watching a TV prog via BBC iplayer when the image and sound froze for about 5 seconds then just white screen. Help

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."

  • When waking from "sleep" screen turns grey under the pointer and the computer is effectively dead. Have to hold power 'off' for five seconds to regain computer.

When waking from "sleep" the screen appears normal but, the pointer leaves a trail of grey as it moves and the whole screen will turn grey if I keep moving the pointer. The computer is effectively dead. Have to shut down by using power off for six seconds and then re-starting. I know little about computers!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

  • My Ipad (4?) screen went black but I can hear it. I tried hitting both the sstart button and sleep button for 10 seconds and the apple icon comes up, my screen saver shows for 1 second and it returns to black screen again. I can hear SIRI. How do I fix?

I had been using the IPAD and all of a sudden it started talking back to me and when swiping apps to close them they would not close. She (the IPAD) kept talking back to me such as "use three fingers" etc. Then the screen went blank and if I touched it I could get it to beep at various touch points. SIRI would also communicate, but the screen stayed black.
As was suggested here, I tried getting a reboot by holding the sleep key with the home key and after 10 seconds the apple logo shows and 5 seconds later my screen saver comes on for just one second, and then it goes back to a black screen. SIRI tells me shes not available and someone else, must be her sister, says things like 90%, 85%, 80% if I continually swipe the screen. Can anyone help me?

    Hello, Juniorjr2.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This sounds like screen curtain may be enabled.  Screen curtain is a feature that allows display privacy.  To disable screen curtain while VoiceOver is enabled, you can three finger triple tap the screen to disable this feature.  You may need to press the home button once in order to process these steps.  If you wish to disable VoiceOver, see the link in the article below.
