Hollow Stars for Albums
So I don't rate my albums until I have rated my songs, but my problem is that I have several smart playlists based on album rating and when I rate a single song in iTunes that CD will then show up on my playlist due to the hollow star rating.
Any way to solve this?
If you assign songs a rating an unrated album gets an automatic rating, which you can override by rating it.
If you assign an album a rating unrated songs get an automatic rating, which you can override by rating them.
iTunes doesn't import ratings from tags, or third party services. You set them.
You can't turn automatic ratings off.

Auto album ratings breaks smart playlists - hollow stars
I've seen this discussed a few times but the given answers don't seem to work, maybe it has changed again in the new release of itunes (I'm on 9.1.1.12 on XP). I have a smart playlist of all the songs which have not been rated. Once I'd rated 19/29 of them they all disappeared as itunes had calculated an album rating (which is fine) but then applied that rating to all the unrated songs. In some views the songs are listed as unrated but the key thing is that the smart playlist thinks they're rated when they're not. Previous postings say to unrate the album but whenever I do that it just automatically rerates again. How can I create a playlist of songs that I have not yet rated?
Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
I've just had a look at this under V9.1.1.11 current Windows build (is yours 64-bit perhaps?) and, as far as I can tell, rating tracks (filled stars) will produce an automatic rating (hollow stars) for an album. Likewise rating albums will produce an automatic rating for each of their tracks. If you only rate some of the tracks of an album without explicitly setting an album rating then the remaining tracks should stay unrated. I can set ratings for all but one track of the album and the last will stay happily unrated. What rules are you using to determine what should be in your unrated playlist?

Hollow stars.... itunes assigns an album average based on my star ratings, but in what scenario do Songs get assigned a hollow star? does itunes acquire info from other media programs or solely from what ive rated in itunes, or does itunes use other peoples ratings... Hollow Star assignment basis?

Smart playlists and hollow stars
Does anyone know how to make iTunes' smart playlists distinguish between hollow (iTunes generated) and solid (user generated) stars? I like rating albums, but I also want to be able to create playlists that only include tracks with four or five user-generated stars. When I rate an album, iTunes automatically rates all of unrated tracks. As a result, my ratings-based playlists then include these hollow-star tracks, and I don't want them there.
If there is no way to make smart playlists distinguish between hollow and solid stars, is there a way to turn the automatic ratings off?
Thanks for the help with this.I now do this, it's not a definitive solution, it's rather a tournaround but it works.
If i rate an album with 5 stars, all the songs then go to the smart playlist (with the checked option "only 5 stars songs") even if a single song itself it's not 5 stars, so i rated every song I don't want to be on the playlist with one star so that it will not appear.
Obviously this does not work if you use the 1 star rating for example for songs you like only a little.

The album ratings assigned by iTunes are ruining my playlists. How do I COMPLETELY remove these ratings? They currently appear as hollow stars. I have tried to find assistance in the forums and in the help sections but without success. I see a few people have been able to make the hollow stars disappear by clicking to the left of the leftmost star but this does not work for me.

MediaSource sub-windows for Album/Artist/Genre have gone
My wife's Zen Micro (2--02) doesn't seem able to have its music organised by Creative MediaSource Explorer.
I'm sure that MediaSource used to display not only the tracks but had little sub-windows where you could select Album, Artist or Genre and get all the tracks associated with your choice.
However, all that I get now is a list of filenames. OK, I can click on these to get the next folder level which seems to be the album name, then further click to get to the track(s).
What I can't do is get the thing to list all tracks or all albums or all genres. It's just hopeless.
MediaSource, as I say, used to show little sub-windows when I had my Zen Xtra but now my wife's Zen Micro's been added and everything upgraded, these sub-windows for Album and Artist do not appear as they do in the illustration with the blurb...not even with my Zen Xtra.
Further, the Zen Micro doesn't seem to have a list of selected tracks like my Xtra does. The help files seem to refer to one but I'm blowed if I can find it, either via my PC or via the player's own display.
How do you see what's coming up next to play?
Everything's upgraded to the latest using Auto update and I re-loaded the f/w.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, please?In the bar above the list of tracks there should be a Find box. Next to this is a View button, next to that is a small downward triangle which, when clicked, allows you to select Genre, Album, Artist. Play around with those 2 buttons and you should be able to get back the view you want.
To view the selected tracks click on View in the menu bar and then choose Now Playing Window.

I just installed iTunes 10.5 (latest version as of 11 Jan 2012), onto a computer running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I loaded my music library into it, it compiled the list and separated them by album. But even though I'd assigned most of the albums artwork through my Zune management software (a Microsoft product), almost none of them populated into iTunes. So I went through and started asking the software to try to find album artwork where possible.
I did this a few times album by album, then I decided to select multiple albums and see what happened. No problems. Then I selected all of the albums I had--about 600 in all--and asked it to get artwork. It seemed to process for a bit, then came back with the error, "Artwork for [album name] could not be located. You do not have permission to access the requested resource." I tried this on several individual albums, only to receive that same error.
The very first time I did it, I was told I needed an account with the iTunes store to make it work, so I signed in using an old Apple ID (the account had been inactive for so long it had been locked for security, I unlocked it and that seemed to be that). Then I did what I described above.
The weird thing--to me--is that I can still add artwork to the albums manually if I want to, from imagery stored locally on my own computer. The only thing it seems to have a problem with is when I ask it to go find artwork from the iTunes store.
Do I need to uninstall iTunes and then reinstall it? Did something go wrong with the process of authorizing the computer to work with the iTunes store? Do I need to de-authorize and then re-authorize the computer? Could this be something related to Windows permissions on the iTunes library?Right on about how to reset the warnings, it was exactly that.
I went through the steps to let iTunes through Windows Firewall, but still get the same problem when I access the iTunes store (and even though I followed the steps in the help file to the letter, I notice it still says iTunes is NOT enabled for it). And now, thanks to the re-enabled warnings, when I try to get it to download artwork for single albums, this is what I get:
"Artwork for [album name] could not be found. An unknown error occurred (-50)."

Release Date for Albums Year, MONTH DAY
Why can't I enter the release date for albums (Year month and day)? Itunes has a field for year but that's it. I would have loved to be at the meeting where it was discussed.
"Year, month and day? why the heck would any want that?"
"Well a lot of us want to see our albums in chronological order and you can't do that with just the year, many albums come out every year"
"Blah Blah Blah, music is just to dance to, no one cares about dates, besides it would four extra digit fields in each entry"
But seriously, I would think that Itunes would aspire to be THE program for music lovers.
Instead of being able to just enter the release dates I have had to come up with my own work around. I put a the release date in the format yyyymmdd in fromt of each title and then sort by titles.
Now all of my Beatle albums finally show up in chronological order by release date. But why should I have to massage the data like this. I can't imagine what goes on at Itunes planning sessions. I'm very unhappy about the loss of cover flow but that's another story.I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one who sees this as a problem. And another Beatles fan too.
This is so fundamental. Every album has a release date and it's part of the data that is always associated with that album. Why did Apple look at the data available for an album and consciously decide to truncate it?
What kind of music lover isn't aware of when albums are released? I just don't get it.
I like having the date yyyymmdd in front of each album. It isn't pretty but it means the albums are chronological. If you want, you could just put this in the sort field and leave the regular album title in the regular field. Then the names would be right and they would sort correctly. But again. Why should we have to do all that?
Apple is busy constantly changing where the controls are on I tunes rather than fixing something simple and important like this.
Today I wanted to load some songs onto my ipod touch and it took me 10 minutes to figure out how to sync because the last itunes update got rid of the side bar.
How are you supposed to get comfortable using a product when they keep moving the controls around? Just quit apple. leave the controls where they are. Add new controls if needed but stop moving them. I know I'm ranting now but I am honestly angry and frustrated, -

CJyou can set key image for albums page, as long as the image is one of the first of 50 images in the album (aka photos page) and you need to know how iweb widgets work.

Zen Sleek Photo: support for Album A
As the title already says: will there be support for Album Art for the Zen Sleek Photo in future firmware versions?
Yes I also ask the same question. I ordered mine earlier this week and thought the sleek would support album art. I actually downloaded MediaMonkey and took about 6+ hours going thru and organizing everything and making sure every album had an album cover. Please Creative just fix this one setback and it would be an even sweeter player then it already is! I couldn't afford to get a ZVM but the Sleek Photo was the next best thing. Please we're not asking much just help us out. There are people out here that still use your earlier players and are being left in the dust...don't leave us there when we know that you can fix it or provide us a way to fix it. Thanks!

So, you can add multiple images to iTunes for each track. Like, the album cover and an image of the liner notes, or the back cover, or, something like that.
I don't seem to be able to see those secondary images while using my 5G iPod that I synced after adding the images.
Is it possible to see multiple images for album art? Is my iPod even getting those secondary images?
Thanks!Actually in a way you can do this, although you won't see the multiple images all at the same time. For an album you can actually have a different image for each track on that album. So for example you could have the cover for the first track, the back cover for the second track and so on. All you need do is browse info for each track and drop each image into each track separately.

Does anyone know where the latest version of iTunes stores artwork for albums.
I am running it under 64bit Windows 7.
I know I a bit thick today but that's because I have been working all night. I just can't see where the artwork is being stored.The Album Artwork folder should be inside your iTunes library folder. It breaks down into Cache (cache of embedded images), iCloud Purchases (images for purchases not on your computer) and Download (store art that hasn't been embedded). The next level identifies the library (you can store multiple parallel .itl files in the iTunes folder, but I wouldn't). Below that is a hash table structure of nested folders. The art itself is stored in iTunes' custom .itc2 files.

3rd party application for album artwork?
Are there any GREAT 3rd party applications for automatically bringing in album art to iTunes? I've got a bunch of old music that the automatic function within iTunes is not getting anything for. I even tried to clean up some of the info (i.e. make sure it had artist, song name, etc in proper fields), but nothing.
If that or another app would correct song data also (probably asking a bit much) that would be awesome. I see where some of my very old stuff from back in the MP3 days will have Artist Name-Song Name as the title.
Any help is appreciated. I dont have a week to do this manually!MP3Freaker would be your best bet. I've used others but MP3Freaker works flawlessly, and allows you to do three songs for free to show how it works, and how well. It's $23 but it saved me hours of painstaking work going through my 5500 songs

Is it possible to search for albums by artists name?
I am new to mac and have only had one and my ipod touch for a couple of weeks, so this may be a simple question or might not be possible. Is there a way of being able to search for albums, but to do it with the artists name rather than the albums name. This is because I have a lot of dj sets on my ipod which when I am looking through for a set to put on and not sure what to put on I either have to search in artist and in that list lots of the artists don't have albums or full sets they are just songs on compilations, so I have a lot of names in the list I don't wont. If I search for albums then It is the Compilation names which will put the same artist scattered all through the list. The only way I think I could do this is to rename all my albums with the pre-fix of the artists name, but would list all the albums and there may be 20 or so albums by the same artist so again a big lists. I hope I'm explaining myself enough so someone can understand what I'm trying to do, and can give me some ideas of what to do.
The only way I can think of doing it is to create a play list for each artist then a could search through the artists names in playlists.
Why not simply search thru the Artists list? Or the Album list?
Besides, if you created a playlist for an artist, it only shows the songs, not the albums for that artist.
Don't clog up & slow down iTunes and your iPod by unecessarily duplicating info.
Tap Artists and it will show you all the artists.
Tap a specific Artist and it will list the albums for that artist. -
PDF support for Album Artwork??
The time of digitally distributed music has come; by necessity or force, it's here. Apple is one of the leaders with iTunes, and have brought some of the most artistic people together as employees and consumers under the Apple Inc. community...
HOWEVER: Is there not a more dynamic way of dealing with Album Artwork in iTunes yet?
Why has Apple not made it a point to really pioneer the visual-artistry that has accompanied albums for decades in the new digital realm? Album artwork is ALMOST as important as the music itself, yet apple has not made some sort of dynamic, perhaps PDF style support for album "booklets" for non-iTunes store music. Coverflow introduces it, yet leaves much to be desired, and the way one goes about editing album art for multiple covers per song is underdeveloped. You have to drag one item in at a time and it's clunky.
Too often a musical group will allow their album to be downloaded from their website after purchasing the hardcopy, being sure to include a PDF of their cover and booklet, only be ultimately put in the trash by me, the consumer, because there is no real way to view it, or even store it in iTunes.
It would be wonderful to see this relatively simple but incredibly important aspect of music culture taken into more consideration, and become a strong component of iTunes in the near future. With the amount of development time put into iTunes I'm sure this issue could easily be solved with creativity and speed. The ability to drag a PDF right into the album artwork box on the bottom left of iTunes would be awesome and convenient. (I'd love to even see some kind of visual art, or "album art" Podcasts, downloadable artistic portfolios, or artbooks).

I would love to be incredibly wrong and have there be a solution already built into iTunes. I know there are booklets included with some of the albums purchased in iTunes, but we still can't just drag a PDF into iTunes and have it stick to a song.So no real answers here yet. I too would like to know the resolution at which the album artwork is displayed on my iPod photo in order to optimise my music library.
