Home directory has disappeared - help!

I have just logged on to my MacBook and received a message to say that it can't find my home directory - it's just not there in the Users folder.
I am the main user (administrator). There is one other user of the computer who has an account and her folder is there, as is 'Shared' and another folder with my user ID, but with a '1' appended to the end.
What has happened - any help gratefully received...

My 2 cents, most OS X gurus will tell you not to run as an administrator. Keep one or 2 admin users on tap, one for installing/etc. and one as a "control." Run day-to-day ops as a standard user.
This is better security and keeps you from making mistakes without entering a password.
You can do this by:
1)Backing up! Always do this before making changes to your system.
2)Create 1 or 2 new admin accounts. I would make 2 new admin accounts. Name one "Control" and the other something like "Owner."
3)Log into "Owner" and change your old account to a standard user.
4)I would verify permissions at least twice after you do this to get any bugs out.
5)Restart, log in as your old (now standard) account.
Keep the "Owner" password handy for when you need to install/make changes/etc to your system.
Don't use "Control" except for just that, to see if a problem affects that account as well as other accounts.

After updating to system 7.2 on my MacAir, the library folder in my home folder has disappeared.. anyone know if this is a byproduct of OS7.2

Not with 10.7.2 but with OSX Lion since it was released.
Apple has hidden the Library folder by default.
In Finder option-click Go in the menubar and it will appear under Home.
Or permanently with this Terminal command: chflags nohidden ~/Library

Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.dock.plist file to the Trash.
    Do the same for:    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist

As you have discovered, third party dock and desktop customization apps can often cause problems.

  • My enitre home directory had disappeared!

    Hello,
I wanted to free some space on my external hard disk. scince there is no easy way to do it in a mac (apple for god sake fix this) I moved some files in the external hard disk to the thrash then I emptied the tharsh. But to my surprise MY WHOLE home directory is GONE!!!!! everything inside it was DELETED, my photos, my projects, my music. WHAT SHOULD I DO HELP PLEASE!
    thanks!

Your account of how you lost data frankly doesn't add up. I don't know what really happened, but it's not what you think.
Don't do any more work with the computer until you have a working backup solution. To have no backups more recent than a month ago is inexcusable. I suggest you use Time Machine with another external drive.
Once you've backed up, please launch the Disk Utility application, select your internal drive, and run "Verify Disk." If any errors are found, insert the installation DVD that came with the computer and boot from it by restarting and holding down the C key at the chime until the installer screen appears. DO NOT install. From the menu bar, select Utilities > Disk Utility. Again select the internal drive, and this time run "Repair Disk." Repeat until there are no more errors.

  • Mounting NFS home directory error, please help!

    Hello everyone,
We are working on setting up a network of Macs to a Linux server. The server is running NFS / NIS to authenticate, all the users have their home directories on the server and do not have any local accounts on any of the computers.
We have a problem getting the home dirs automounted on the local computers. The users need their home folder set correctly to import settings and so on, and the home folders are stored on the server.
We can connect to the NFS servers, we can get the computers to log in with NIS accounts, we can manually access their restricted info once we manually mount the NFS drive.
However, we cannot get the home folders to mount in the home directory, automounted. We have one working macintosh computer running Apple Os X 1.5, but we cannot get it to work on Snow Leopard ( 1.6 ).
Did anything change in permissions or in the way Mac OS X handles NFS shares or automounting in the update to 1.6, Snow Leopard? Does anyone have any experience handling NFS/NIS mounting in Apple Mac OS X 1.6?
    / Z.

    Hello everyone!
Even if I posted this recently, we had been working on it for two days. However, we just defeated this beast and managed to solve it!
It turned out to be simple, as it often is:
We changed /etc/auto_home to manually provide the IP of the NFS server with a wildcard (*) for users, & for username, then commented out the normal +auto_home.
The server was already set up to allow the computers to access everything.
The problem was, in short, that mac OS X has a dedicated slot for mounting in /home and thus you can't mount anything else there unless you replace the normal /etc/auto_home

  • Bookmark icon necy to HOME button has disappeared.

on the navigation toolbar, there was a button to activate the Bookmarks Menu. It was beside the HOME button. It has disappeared and I cannot get it back. HOME button is still there but there is now no space to the right of it for the Bookmark button. In the Customize option, it appears to be there, but it is not visible once Done is selected.

You only see the Bookmarks Menu button on the Navigation Toolbar if the Bookmarks Toolbar and the Menu bar are hidden.

  • Home network has disappeared

I have networks at home and at work, and I have wired and wireless connections on both. Both wireless networks run off the same model Belkin router and both are on the same ISP - Comcast. A few days ago, my network at home started appearing and disappearing on my MBP. Now I can't see the network at all, yet I can see 4 networks belonging to neighbors.
I thought I might have a router problem, so I took the home router and MBP to work. Worked fine. Strong signal. No problems. The MBP has 10.5.5 OS; both my G5's (Power PCs) are 10.5.4. Routers are up to date on firmware. I already did the 10.5.5/AirPort Safe Mode procedure I saw in another discussion to see if that would help. Oh, and I brought the work router home to see if that changed anything-no go.
So, I'm at a loss here. I know just enough about networking to be dangerous. I listed everything I could think of that might pertain to the problem. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

It sounds like what may have happened is a neighbor may have set up their own Wi-Fi router on the same channel or may have acquired a cordless phone that's interfering with your router's signal.
You may want to download iStumbler and see if it reports any nearby routers operating on the same Wi-Fi channels as your router.

  • The Home icon has disappeared in Firefox 4, How can I get it back?

Installing Firefox 4 made the Home and other icons I used frequently disappear and changed the access to Google. Now, after I finish on a website and want to return to the "Start" page, I have to close the tab and start all over. Not a great design, ya know?

The home icon by default has moved to the right hand side of the navigation toolbar.
If the other icons that you miss are the stop/go/reload buttons, in Firefox 4 by default the Stop, Go and Reload buttons are combined and attached to the right hand edge of the location bar.
When you are typing in the location bar it will show the Go button. When a site is loading it shows the Stop button. At other times it shows the Reload button.
If you want separate buttons stop/go/reload buttons, or want to move the home button, right-click on a toolbar and choose Customize, you can then drag and drop the buttons and place them elsewhere. If you place them in the order "Reload-Stop" on the right hand edge of the location bar they will be combined again. For more details on customizing the toolbar see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/How+to+customize+the+toolbar

  • My Photostream has Disappeared :( HELP

Last night my photo stream held 1000 photos, this morning it only holds 35, and not the last 35, just 35 random pics from throughout my photostream. It is the same on all the Ipads, Iphones and Desktop Computer.
I know that the stream only holds 1000 photos, and it recycles some through every so often, but it has never deleted all of them before.
Can anyone help with what has happened please?
Or does anyone know how to reload the pics from my camera roll back to the Stream so that I can access them on my computer again?
    Thanks

This could be a hardware problem.  Have you checked with your service provider?
You could try running diags - I don't know if it includes a camera test but you can try it.  I'm htinking you will have to get the devie replaced / repaired though.

  • My podcast directory has disappeared

I got an error out of nowhere saying my library had been corrupted and that the backup had been recovered. The music is all back in place but my entire podcast directory disappeared. The files are still on my computer so how do I point itunes to them.
I really hope I don't have to resubscribe to each one, because there were dozens :\.

You will have to resubscribe, alas.
To get your existing ones back into itunes - You can try just dragging the Podcast folder into itunes, but I've had mixed results with this....depending on how old the files were, they might show up as music tracks. But with itunes 8, you should be able to change them to Media Kind=Podcast on the options tab.
It goes better if itunes preferences are set for "Keep iTunes folder organized" on the Advanced tab.
Best of luck, and make regular backups of that ITL fie in case it happens again!

  • Slide lock on home screen has disappeared

This is about the security feature you have to use each time you start up the Droid X -- i.e., the image of the combination padlock that you drag to the right.  That feature disappeared a while ago (before I upgraded to 2.2) and hasn't come back.  So how do I get it back again?  I've gone through the security settings and can't seem to find that option.  (Note that I am not talking about the password lock or the pattern lock, just the simple slide lock.)

If slider was disabled at time of update the slider remains disabled because there isnt any options to enable it, only solution it to hard reset. Use the instructions here: http://community.vzw.com/t5/DROID-X-by-Motorola/Minimize-Droid-X-Issues-After-Froyo-Update/m-p/296586#M11211  also heres a little reading material that I got from Motorola about this subject... http://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/57221/kw/disable%2Bslide%2Bunlock%2Bon%2Bfroyo/p/30%2C6720%2C7500%2C/session/L3NpZC9uMVE5alJiaw%3D%3D/p_country_code/US/p_reference/moto_integration.php.
Notice the statement under photo states "Screen lock for DROID X Froyo users (SW version 2.3.15) is a permanent feature.
You will not have option to turn "Screen lock" (the simple swipe from left to right when display is dimmed) either OFF or ON your handset."

  • The quick link button to my email account has disappeared from my Firefox home page. How can I get it back again ?

When I used to click onto the Internet Firefox icon to get onto my home page, the top of the screen gave me a click on-link direct to my hotmail email a/c. For some reason that has disappeared. I can still do it via the Internet Explorer icon, but the settings are different, and the system does not accept text as readily as it did when using the Firefox. Could someone please tell me how to (in words a techno phobe can understand and follow) insert this link back onto the Firefox home page. Many thanks...

Perhaps the button was on your Bookmarks Toolbar. Can you make sure that bar is displayed? You can turn toolbars on and off using any of these methods to display a toolbar list:
    * right-click a blank area of the tab bar, or the "+" button on the tab bar
    * "3-bar" menu button > Customize > Show/Hide Toolbars
    * tap the Alt key to activate the classic menu bar temporarily, then View > Toolbars
    Does that help?
Also, you can access your Hotmail account using http://hotmail.com/ and Microsoft will redirect you to the secure login page.

  • My camera icon has disappeared.  I tried the pushing home button twice....have no idea what they are talking about....that didn't do anything.

Camera icon has disappeared.  Help please.

Depending on what iOS version you have, the camera button can be accessed from the lock screen, or from within the home screen. If the phone is locked, tap the home button once and you should see the Slide to Unlock and to the right of that, the camera button. That button is designed to be slid upwards to access the camera.
If you go to the home screen, find the camera app icon and tap on that, the camera should open. The camera could be in one of the folders you have on any of your home screens. If you still cannot find it, go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout. That should bring it back.
