Can any one tell me how to restore the home directory icon in the dock?

User Home Directory settings in dock using WGM

Hello all:
There has to be a simple answer to this problem as I have successfully done this in the past on a Panther server.
I just upgraded to Tiger server and want to include the user's Documents, Home Directory, etc in their Dock. However, I can't seem to find the correct procedure.
I used to complete this by logging into a client machine with WGM (as administrator), run the application, go to the user, select the preferences to include the user's Documents folder, Network Home, etc in the Dock for always, and that was it.
However, this procedure no longer seems to work.
What am I doing wrong??
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, in my initial post I said that the user share shows up on the desktop, if those options are selected.
The problem is that if those Finder options aren't selected the users don't have quick access to their user directory. They literally don't know it's there. Worse since 'All My Files' are the default in 10.8 they don't even get it in new finder windows.
The most peculiar issues is that the first time a user logs onto the computer with their domain credentials IT DOES WORK; their user directory shows up in the dock, and it does NOT show up on the desktop. On subsequent logins this is reversed.
I'd simply like it to work the way it's supposed to...

I deleted my home directory icon from Finder. Does anyone know how to replace it?

If you mean from the Finder sidebar then Finder > Finder Preferences > Sidebar and re-chek mark it.

Home Directory Sync Broken

Ever since I rolled out OSX 10.8.2 on some test macbook airs the home directory sync (thru AD home directory path) doesn't work. When a user logs in with their AD credentials, everything works fine otherwise:
The home directory mounts
I am able to access all of the contents of the network home directory from the dock
When I attempt to manually sync the network home directory the progress bar shows that it is in progress for a second and then shows "complete" or "finished". I don't remember the exact wording. When I check the local user folders to see if any of the content from the networked home drive has sync'd "down" from the file server all of the directories are empty just like they were prior to the sync.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to remedy this, or is this just completely broken in ML? It used to work fine on SL and it's a shame to lose such a nice feature.

Desktop icons are no longer trusted, custom home directory [solved]

I have my home directory on a raid, and have noticed that after switching it the desktop icons no longer work properly (icons are missing/default blank as well and labeled <filename>.desktop. Even if I create a new launcher on the desktop it still won't work.
For example, I click chromium.desktop, and I get the follow message:
Untrusted application launcher
The application launcher "chromium.desktop" has not been marked as trusted. If you do not know the source of this file, launching it may be unsafe.
Marking it as safe does nothing, launching anyway will work. However, the annoyance of no icons and a <filename>.desktop is rather annoying. If I switch back to my original /home/user$ it works fine again. I even tried binding the raid location to /home/user$ and it still has a problem unless I go back to the original home directory path.
Any thoughts?

Removing "user" from the fstab line of the raid fixed this.

FileSync Failure On Mobile Account Home Directory

Hardware
Server
Mac Mini Mid-2012, OS X 10.9.5, Server 3.1.2, OpenDirectory ON, HomeDirectory: /Volumes/HomeFolders/Users
Client
iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2012, OS X 10.9.5, MobileAccount
Network
Server exists on a foreign subnet. Client binds to OD Replica on local network. Authentication works without issue. SSH connections to Server work flawlessly. SCP can be used to move files across the network without issue.
Situation
User account automatically creates a mobile profile on any system used. This is set in Workgroup Manager for all users of this User's type.
The local machine has successfully created a Mobile Account for the user, and User is able to use the machine without complication, except that User complains none of his personal files are present.
Home Sync reports last sync as being "Incomplete".
Attempted Corrections
The log file had indicated that the synchronization process was being cancelled by the next synchronization which started automatically after 20 minutes. To correct this problem, I changed the HomeSync settings to start only on "Manual" requests.
After this change, I observed that the log file that a file was missing. I ran SCP to duplicate the home folder on the local machine, replacing the home folder that had been already created. I no longer find the missing file issue.
I found an article suggesting that deleting the .FileSync folder from the local and remote home folders would force the system to re-evaluate the status of the sync. I deleted these folders in order to allow the system to recreate them. The system continues to have Incomplete home sync processes.
Help Required
I am unable to interpret the remaining EXCEPTION lines in the log file. I appreciate any help deciphering the next steps in fixing the Home Sync process. I appreciate any tips or advice on what causes Home Sync to fail in these situations, and if any person has information on how to create a local mirror that would be referenced for the HomeSync rather than the main server, that information would be greatly appreciated.

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
          Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
Select
           ▹ Restart
from the menu bar.

Can't delete folder I created in Home directory

I created a music folder as an alternate to iTunes in my Home directory. Recently it started acting funny: wouldn't open in finder, wouldn't allow me to rename it, and now won't let me move or delete it. I tried unlocking it and checked that I have read and write priveleges. Any suggestions?

I'm guessing that Finder keeps .trash open to know wether or not files have been added to it and update the Dock icon, right?No.
The visible 'Trash' you see in the finder is the union of all your trash folders. Each volume (potentially) contains a /.Trashes/ folder at its root level. Within that there are folders with UIDs as their name, 501 being the first 'normal user' and 0 being root. Your "/.Trashes/502" means you were booted from another volume at some time. However, that trash folder is empty, as you correctly deduced.
Your "123 bytes .. /Users/name/.Trash" is not empty, however, because of the size. "123" is not a valid size, either (must be a multiple of 34). So you have directory problems on your hard disk—you need to fix that with Disk Repair, from Disk Utility while booted from your Install disk: see Using Disk Utility and fsck to resolve startup issues or perform disk maintenance.
You will probably see an "Invalid Link Count" message, hopefully this is not so serious that Disk Utility can't repair it, but let us know.

Dashboard icon on Dock disappeared

I accidentally deleted my Dashboard icon from the dock and can't figure out how to get it back. I tried finding it in Finder, but I can't find it in Applications (maybe I'm not looking in the right place).
I can still get to the Dashboard with mouse clicks, but would like the icon back as well.
Can anyone help?

AD user with no home directory does not work correctly

Hey guys:
I just tried to login as a standard AD user and was able to login, but the finder is having issues. The Finder seems to reset itself and the dock would also reset, plus the top menu bar is not present, anyone else with this issue? Also I login as my account with admin rights and have no problem, I am thinking about trashing the finder prefs and dock prefs and see what happens then, will post back if I find anything.

We're suddenly getting the same issue here.
A MacBook Pro (OSX Lion) installed a few months ago has no issue when setting up new users.
The MacBook Pro (OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.2) which arrived this week is a different matter altogether!
Once it joined the domain every attempt to log in as a network user has failed. The following ticked options work on our Lion machines:-
Create mobile account at login
Require confirmation before creating a mobile account
Use UNC path from Active Directory to derive network home location
Default user shell: /bin/bash
However, the Mountain Lion machine is having none of it. Network users get no finder bar across the top, the Finder icon will bounce every so often as though it's tried, and failed, to load.
Terminal states "no home directory"
The only way to get these working is to turn off the "Create mobile account" ones, then manually create an account once the user logs in (with a local administrator on hand to elevate when prompted).

FV Home Directory behaves like regular Disk Image

Yesterday I needed to shutdown the computer via Terminal, since logout was blocked by Finder (although it wasn't running according to the Dock).
Since then, my FV-encrypted Home Directory is displayed like any other Disk Image:
- The home icon is replaced by a regular disk image icon in the Finder sidebar
- Eject button next to home folder in the Finder sidebar (doesn't work when clicked, says the disk is in use)
- No more automatic special icons for the folders (Documents, Movies etc)
Login works, and I can access all my data as it was before, but I don't think this behaves as intented. No external devices were/are connected except the network cable. I didn't find anything interesting in the Console logs, but I don't know what to search for.

I noticed that "Desktop" is no longer my desktop (files moved there don't show up on the desktop). "Goto, ~" opens the Desktop folders parent, my FV disk image, though.

Home directory is shown as package

Hi,
a few days ago I copied the .hdd directory of a parallels installation into my home directory. but i made a little mistake and copied the content of the folder into my home dir. i deleted the files again and copied now the folder.
after clicking afterwards to my home dir in the finder - only the Terminal opened with a shell.
so currently there is no way to open my home directory with the finder.
all other directories I can open - even directories in my homedir.
I did some research, but I don't really get a clue due to my not existing knowledge about mac os x.
hardware: macbookpro from previous year
os: max os x 10.8.2 -- latest patch
### one program i found during research shows that my homedir is a package.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo ~
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You can then quit Terminal.
Relaunch the Finder, or log out and log back in.

"Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full"

I have a 250 GB hard disk, 4.34 GB of which is in my "Home" folder. (Total HD usage is about 27 GB.) This happened suddenly after Mail had been working fine for eons. I deleted a bunch of files (107 MB) in a "Drafts" folder (none show up in the Mail app's "Drafts" icon), but it made no difference. I re-installed the Mac OS X 10.4.11 combo update... no difference. Mail version is 2.1.3.
Any help here? I cannot use Mail at all.

Why can't a new folder be created within my user home directory when using 'Save As' in Mountain Lion?

Hi,
So I want to create a new folder within my main user home directory (not the root directory) just for my developer-related files? I can do this from Finder, although it does prompt me for my password to do so. However, when using 'Save As' from any app, the 'New Folder' button is greyed out when I select my user home directory. So I have to create the folder in Finder then Save As.
Is this normal behavior? Is OSX discouraging me from adding things to my user home directory by making it less convenient? Is there a good reason it would be discouraging me from creating new folders there? If not, is there a setting that I can change to allow the creation of new folders from the Save As prompt?

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this,boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type: ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.
Repair User Permissions

Time Machine always switches to my home directory. What to do?

D'oh, need to restore a file, which happens to be in a root folder of my iMac's HD.   No prob, Time Machine is on duty!
The usual procedure: In Finder, bring the containing folder to the front, select the file, go to the clock icon at he upper right, pull down, and choose "Enter Time Machine". TM takes over the display with the distinctive Star-Field background and offers to restore in that folder.
Up until today that that's worked in every version of MacOS that includes Time Machine.
Today: No matter what I do --including after a system restart-- Time Machine switches the front-most window to display my home directory, first, THEN goes into Star-Field mode.
Note 1: Yeah, I can work-around by navigating to my HD and then to the specific file I need to restore.
Note 2: This problem occurs even when the file I need to restore is in the hierarchy of my home directory.
So: Why does TM now insist on switching to my home directory and what to do about it?   Without endangering my existing files or TM backups?

My next step is to reformat the drive and create a new filesystem; I'll see if Time Machine is happy with a clean start.
I'm a MobileMe subscriber, so I downloaded and set up the old .Mac Backup.app, and will be running that daily to shove my important files up to my iDisk (and probably to various other locations), in case backupd decides to choke again, at least I have a backup to my backup.
Good plan. I run CCC daily, in addition to TM's hourly backups, and use Backup to iDisk daily for fairly small stuff, plus others to DVD/RWs kept in my safe deposit box. May seem like overkill, but I've learned, usually the hard way, that when it comes to backups, paranoia is prudent!

Custom Home Screen Icons

I was wondering how difficult it was to create Home Screen icons for sites (like Apple and Yahoo! have).
I am a web designer and graphic artist but I'm not an "app developer." It seems it would just be a matter of creating a square graphic and somehow coding it to download when the "Add to Home Screen" is clicked.
Is this out of my league? Has anyone here made any?

In case anyone else is interested, you just need to create a 57x57 pixel graphic file, saved in PNG format, and named apple-touch-icon.png to place in the root directory of your web site. The iPhone will round the corners and add the glossy-looking overlay to the icon.
If you don't have access to the site's root directory, you can add a link to the file in the head of your HTML page... for example: *<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="http://www.mysite.com/apple-touch-icon.png" />*
Keep in mind, they look best when kept simple.
