Home Directory Missing

Currently running a 2009 White Macbook, recently upgraded to 10.9 (Mavericks).
So I didn't like my home directory name, it was something stupid I picked when I first got the computer years back.
So I went into the Directory Utility as a root user and changed the name under NFSHome Directory. Just changed it to a new one. Changed everything there (like the dsAttrType things) to the new name too. I had tried to make a new user with the new name like the Apple tutorial suggests but it wouldn't let me. So I figured I would log out of my account, restart the comp and see if that would change anything. Starting up made me set-up my Macbook again like when Mavericks was first installed, then it let me login to my regular account.
All my files are still here on the computer, but the home directory is just gone. I can find all the files by searching their name in Spotlight but there's no home directory listed so they're all just floating around I guess. I went back in and changed my home directory to the old one but that didn't do anything.
And yes, I know.. Shouldn't mess with things I'm not too keen on, but too late for that lecture.
How can I make a new home directory or restore my old one?
I've never backed-up my computer in the 4 years I've owned it, so that's not an option. (don't lecture me here, either.)
Really don't want to lose my files.
Any help is appreciated.

Sorry lectures are not optional.
Step 1 what do you want your username to be?
I'm picking bobby for an example.
Do you already have a separate admin account?
The first step is to make a new admin account with a suitable password.
Login to that new admin account.
Hopefully your old home folder is still inside /Users, if not find it & put it back!
You may need to move it via Terminal & sudo (the paths will need to be correct!)
sudo mv /Users/yourOldHomeFolder /Users/bobby
Once that is in place add a new user account in system preferences (make it a 'standard' non-admin account) & call the user 'bobby'. You don't deserve an admin account after this :^) Make sure you give it the correct 'shortname' it must match the home folder.
You will see a prompt that asks about using the existing folder, agree & wait for it to fix all the permissions (you now have a new user ID).
See if you can login & see your files. You ned to check everything is OK hopefully most things will be, but some items may have used the username or the full file path, so you will just have to deal with that.
Here is a guide my freind wrote for 10.6 on this very topic…

Now before you play with Directory Utility again please RTM

  • AD user missing home directory

The problem: We have issued a Mac to user. The user said that he could not save any settings and the Exchange email was not working as well. He also reported a missing home directory error.  After investagation we found that he indeed had no home directory even though he had authentated with his AD credentials. This happends with any Mac that is bound to our domain that he logs into. He is the only user that we have had this problem with.
    OS: OS X 10.7.2
Network: AD (yes, Created mobile account at login)
    eMail: MS Outlook 2011
What items is the OS X AD plugin looking for that it's not finding? Any idea's?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
I had the exact same problem yesterday. But I found a solution on afp548!
    http://www.afp548.com/forum/viewtopic.php?forum=24&showtopic=14137&highlight=gro ups
The last post has the answer:
In AD you need to give the users read permissions in the group called Authenticated Users. The reason is, that if the user dont have read permissions the AD hides the UNC path from OS X and therefore the user cant login to the home folder.
I had several users who could login and several that couldnt. Setting this permission rigth solved the problem!
Hope it works for you to.

  • Sound track files from iTunes go missing on moving home directory moved my

    Howdy all!
I moved my home directory to an external disk not long ago and found that every aspect of an Aperture 3.0.3 slideshow survived EXCEPT that the links (?) to music files included on a secondary sound track appear broken. (This audio is NOT attached to a specific image.) These were all from my iTunes Music library, which appears unchanged after the move. The track timings, placement, and names are all correct, but a little exclamation-point-in-yellow-triangle warning symbol occurs at the beginning of each new sound file. Could someone point me to a way to reconnect the original files to the slideshow?? (I've searched this forum considerably and Googled the issue.)
fleuryfy posted on the subject "No audio after moving Project or Slideshow" on Apr 6, 2010 11:41 AM, which sounds very similar; I'd be grateful to hear from him about whether he had to completely remake the sound track or if re-importing the audio
The phrase "reconnecting referenced files" occurs all over the Web in the context of the release of 3.0.3, but it sounds like this problem persists for music files.
Many thanks for any suggestions or references.

  • FileSync Failure On Mobile Account Home Directory

    Hardware
    Server
    Mac Mini Mid-2012, OS X 10.9.5, Server 3.1.2, OpenDirectory ON, HomeDirectory: /Volumes/HomeFolders/Users
    Client
    iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2012, OS X 10.9.5, MobileAccount
    Network
Server exists on a foreign subnet. Client binds to OD Replica on local network. Authentication works without issue. SSH connections to Server work flawlessly. SCP can be used to move files across the network without issue.
    Situation
User account automatically creates a mobile profile on any system used. This is set in Workgroup Manager for all users of this User's type.
The local machine has successfully created a Mobile Account for the user, and User is able to use the machine without complication, except that User complains none of his personal files are present.
Home Sync reports last sync as being "Incomplete".
    Attempted Corrections
The log file had indicated that the synchronization process was being cancelled by the next synchronization which started automatically after 20 minutes. To correct this problem, I changed the HomeSync settings to start only on "Manual" requests.
After this change, I observed that the log file that a file was missing.  I ran SCP to duplicate the home folder on the local machine, replacing the home folder that had been already created.  I no longer find the missing file issue.
I found an article suggesting that deleting the .FileSync folder from the local and remote home folders would force the system to re-evaluate the status of the sync.  I deleted these folders in order to allow the system to recreate them.  The system continues to have Incomplete home sync processes.
    Help Required
I am unable to interpret the remaining EXCEPTION lines in the log file.  I appreciate any help deciphering the next steps in fixing the Home Sync process.  I appreciate any tips or advice on what causes Home Sync to fail in these situations, and if any person has information on how to create a local mirror that would be referenced for the HomeSync rather than the main server, that information would be greatly appreciated.

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • "Home Directory Full" message "fix doesn't work for me

Often (no, not always, it's not consistent), I get the dreaded "Home Directory full" message when I launch mail. Mail then quits when I click OK. Normally, if I launch it again right away, it works.
I tried to use the standard fix (e.g., removing the "Envelope Index" file to the desktop and launching Mail). This did cause a dialog to pup up informing me that I needed to re-index my mail file. I did that, and the process stopped with the progress indicator about two thirds through. I quit Mail and replaced the Mail folder in Library with the backup I had made before getting started.
Next, I tried the Hoover method (running the vacuum command from the Terminal. My machine grinded away for some time. I don't know how far it got (there is no progress indicator nor any other feedback of any kind), but since nothing happened for a good half hour (with no more disk activity for a long time), I quit that process, too. Get info revealed that the "Envelope Index" file had not been modified at all by this. Again, just to be on the safe side, I replaced the Mail file again with the backup copy.
Because the re-indexing in my first attempt had stopped while processing my sent items folder, I suspected that this one was the culprit. I therefore attempted to rebuild it (via the menu command in Mail). Much to my surprise, the process actually finished without an error message. However, my sent items folder now contained some 5,200 emails as opposed to the 7,00 or so it should have.
Then I saved my Mail preferences file to the desktop, made a backup copy of my Mail backup file, and launched Mail. This made the application believe that it was being launched for the first time. I used the Import command and imported only the contents of the Sent Items mailbox, specifying "Other" as the type. This imported 5,225 items; at that point, the progress indicator was showed a fully completed process, even though the "messages" folder contained 7,900 items. Checking things, I found that there was a discrepancy of 9 items (i.e., the last item that showed as having been imported was not the 5,225th item in the "messages" folder, but rather the 5,216th). I thus moved the first 5,216 items from the messages folder into a different folder and tried to import the rest. Much to my surprise, Mail imported the same 5,216 items all over again. This is when I noticed that it does not import from the "messages" folder but rather from the file called "mbox".
And this is where things stand. I still get the "Home Directory Full" message about once out of two launches of Mail (but never once Mail is up and running). I desperately need to get this fixed as I fear I'm on the brink of a disaster with my mail file.
One more clue: I cannot be 100% sure, but it seems to me that the problem began when I added a second dot mac email account to my Mail setup (we have a family pack; I always managed the main account and have more recently added one of the sub-accounts to my configuration). I also noticed that sometimes, this second dot Mac account shows up in my list of mailboxes on the left side of the screen, and sometimes it doesn't. Both these accounts are configured to be checked automatically. In addition to these IMAP accounts, I have a half dozen POP3 accounts and some 40 or 50 local mailboxes configured.
Does anyone know of a utility I can use to rebuild my entire email file instead of just the index? Or does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can manually fix things? I did do the usual stuff already (using disk utility to check the disk, fixing permissions, and so on) without detecting any problems.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.
    Daniel

    You’re welcome.
When I removed the preference file (com.apple.mail.plist), I also removed
the folder "Mail" so as to start from scratch completely.
Well, that’s not what you said in your first post...
I only use "Other" because I read in one of Apple's notes that one should
try "Other" in the event that the OS X Mail import failed (which it did).
This is wrong in the case of Mail 2.x. That has to be an old article. Could you please be more specific as to where exactly did you find it?
there is a way to actually export the contents of a mailbox as individual
items that can then be reimported.
Selected messages can be exported in standard mbox format by doing File > Save As in Mail and choosing Raw Message Source from the Format popup menu. Standard mbox files can be imported into most mail clients. In particular, they can be imported back into Mail doing File > Import Mailboxes and choosing Other as the data format. Using this format, however, would cause some status flags to be lost (e.g. whether a message has been replied to).
Locally stored mailboxes can be copied to the Desktop or anywhere else by just dragging them there from Mail itself (for server-stored IMAP mailboxes, copy the messages to locally stored “On My Mac” mailboxes in Mail first). These, however, are .mbox folders (not standard mbox files), where messages are stored in individual .emlx files that other mail clients don’t know or care about. They can be imported back into Mail doing File > Import Mailboxes and choosing Mail for Mac OS X as the data format.
It also explains why the import only brought in 5,200 items instead of the 7,900.
The question is: where are the others?
    In the Messages folder.
as I mentioned above, I used disk utility to check the disk and fix permissions, so I did
not just do the permissions stuff. In my experience, if checking the disk gives you an
OK result, then there is no point in booting from another disk to perform a repair disk.
Right. I missed that part of your first post. Sorry.
if the mbox files are no longer needed, can they be removed?
Yes. The only items within a mailbox (i.e. within an .mbox or an .imapmbox folder) used by Mail 2.x are Info.plist and the Messages folder. Any other files you may see there are almost certainly Mail 1.x files that Mail 2.x leaves there after the conversion. This is poorly explained in Mac OS X 10.4 Mail: Some mailbox files used by Mac OS X 10.3 are not deleted after importing. The article only talks about mailboxes in ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/, but the same can also be said about mailboxes in “POP-”, “IMAP-”, or “Mac-” account folders.
As long as you keep a backup copy of the old files for a while (at least, until you’re sure everything was converted properly), they can safely be removed from the Mail folder. OnyX has a Cleaning > Misc > Temporary and obsolete items option for getting rid of all those files.
Note that if you see strangely-named Messages-T0x... folders, these aren’t old files from previous versions of Mail, but rather an indication that there is something amiss. More specifically, these are temporary folders created by Mail 2.x during an import or a reindexing process (e.g. rebuilding a mailbox) that Mail should have deleted when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn’t work as expected.
    <hr>
Here’s the procedure I usually suggest to set up Mail again from scratch:
    1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
    2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/. Move (not copy) the entire Mail folder out of there, to the Desktop.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop.
    5. Open Mail and set it up again from scratch. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and check that everything works fine.
    6. You’ll have to re-configure all your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    7. If Mail works fine now and you had any messages stored in local mailboxes, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions to import your mail from the old Mail folder that’s now on the Desktop. Import the Mailboxes folder first, then each of the POP-username@mailserver account folders, if any.
    8. If .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Can't figure out how to change username, shortname and home directory?

    Hello,
Trying to change the username, shortname and home directory on a new Macbook.
I tried the following article to do this:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/132693/2008/03/changeshortusername.html
This is my problem after trying the above article:
I tried this but got stuck when it came to entering my password into terminal. After entering in the sudo command I hit return and saw the password prompt but when I tried to type my password in nothing happened at all as cursor never moved. I hit return again terminal tells me that there is no folder named "new user name" I restarted my Mac and tried it all over again and got the same message. When I go into the original account I see the shortname and home directory are changed but the username is the original one I started with.
How do I make the password cursor move. Have I missed something?
My Macbook if very new and I don't care what I lose on here. Thinking of doing a complete reinstall and updating all over again. Is there a way to fix this?
    Help anyone?

After entering in the sudo command I hit return and saw the password prompt but when I tried to type my password in nothing happened at all as cursor never moved.
    This is intentional.
I hit return again terminal tells me that there is no folder named "new user name" I restarted my Mac and tried it all over again and got the same message.
Enter the actual old and new names into the Terminal instead of 'new user name'.

  • Desktop icons are no longer trusted, custom home directory [solved]

I have my home directory on a raid, and have noticed that after switching it the desktop icons no longer work properly (icons are missing/default blank as well and labeled <filename>.desktop. Even if I create a new launcher on the desktop it still won't work.
For example, I click chromium.desktop, and I get the follow message:
    Untrusted application launcher
The application launcher "chromium.desktop" has not been marked as trusted. If you do not know the source of this file, launching it may be unsafe.
Marking it as safe does nothing, launching anyway will work. However, the annoyance of no icons and a <filename>.desktop is rather annoying. If I switch back to my original /home/user$ it works fine again. I even tried binding the raid location to /home/user$ and it still has a problem unless I go back to the original home directory path.
    Any thoughts?

Removing "user" from the fstab line of the raid fixed this.

  • Home Directory Creation?

I wonder if someone can help...
I've just upgraded my server (G5 PowerPC Dual 2GHZ, 2GB Ram) form 10.4.10 to 10.5. I did a fresh install instead of upgrading to prevent there being any problems but unfortunately there is...
Everything seems to be working fine apart from when i come to create a new user. I select the sharepoint (afp://server.com/Users) in the 'home' tab and select create home now button -> press save and i get the following message:-
unable to create home directory because an error occurred.
I've tried allsorts like creating new sharepoints, new users but nothing seems to help.
    Any suggestions?

I had the same issue. I just got thru doing the third reinstall of Server. (1st. Basic, 2nd Advance, and now third workgroup). On this install it all works fine. On my advanced issue it was a hit and miss situation on what worked for me. So far starting from workgroup and using server admin to manage the system has worked for me to add the little things that workgroup did not provide.

  • Can't change home directory for standard users (admin is OK)

I'm can't relocate home directories for standard users.  Relocating works fine for admin users.
When a standard user logs in, they get a message (paraphased) saying "the home directory is not available.  If it is located on a server, the server might not be online".  If I change the standard user to admin, this message goes away, and everything is fine.
    I created a standard user
moved the home directory using the terminal as root: mv UserName  /otherlocation/UserName
I then went into users and groups, other options and changed the home directory location.
Rebooted, then tried to log in as the standard users.
Next try - Deleted the standard user and created the same user with admin rights.  Followed the above steps and everything works fine.
I don't want this user to have admin rights on my system.  Any ideas

    Hi,
the AFP is has always been switched on. As for the path I believe this to be correct. The path I am using is:
    afp://musicserver/Users
I'm not at the server right now so I mat have got the afp and : and / in the wrong order here but they are correct on the server.
This however does not seem to put the a folder in the Users folder. Could it be something to do with my external hard drive? I am using a Mac Mini as our server (not ideal but fine for us, or at least was) this is booted from our external hard drive. This is the main system drive which is where the Users data is also stored. I have tried all possible paths I can thing of from replacing the 'musicserver' with the IP address. I have also tried adding the name of the drive to the path (System) but all does not work.
Are you able to suggest anything I have missed? Perhaps I'm doing the path wrong?
    Thanks again
    Chris

  • Home directory and personal website trouble after 10.6.7 Server

Xserve recently upgraded to 10.6.7 Server and it seems to have broken two features:
When doing Connect to Server as an LDAP user their home folder is no longer available as a mountable volume. The share that holds all user home folders IS available so that's not the end of the world.
However this also broke the personal web sites, so going to:
    http://<serveraddress>/~shortname now just gives a 403 error
and I get these errors in the error_log (under WebServer in Console)
[Tue Aug 24 11:38:48 2010] [error] [client 10.2.104.16] File does not exist: /Library/WebServer/Documents/~walshd
[Mon Apr 25 09:11:22 2011] [error] [client 10.2.104.16] (62)Too many levels of symbolic links: access to /~walshd failed
[Mon Apr 25 12:39:39 2011] [error] [client 10.2.104.16] (62)Too many levels of symbolic links: access to /~walshd failed
The sharepoint is on an old XServe RAID unit connected directly to server via FibreChannel, but that hasn't changed in a long time...only recent change was running all Software Updates which included moving up to 10.6.7 Server.
Any ideas what I'm missing or where to start looking to resolve this?
    Thanks!

    Camelot wrote:

There are so many ways of configuring home directories that this can't be answered without more information.
For example, are you using automount to mount the user's home directory when they log in?
or do the clients mount a static mount and their Open Directory record just includes a link to the (mounted) home directory?
We are using automounts to get users their home folders. And when logging in at a terminal with an LDAP account you do get into your account as expected. It's only Go -> Connect to Server that won't give the home folder as a sharepoint and the web service for user sites that we agree are most likely tied together.
I have both userdir_module and apple_userdir_module enabled at the moment, although when I tried just one or the other I was getting an Object does not exist rather than the permission error.
I think the key to solving this is in the console log entries httpd -> error_log:

Could any of these have broken the home directories sharepoints or is this just a huge coincidence?

  • PHP 5.0.5 CLI: Am I able to set the Oracle home directory at runtime?

I have two versions of Oracle installed on a SUN Solaris server:
    /opt/app/oracle/product/8.1.7
    /opt/app/oracle/product/9.2.0
Am I able to set the Oracle home directory at runtime using PHP CLI?
    Thanks,

The real answer is it depends how PHP loads Oracle. If the loading
occurs when PHP starts and before your script executes then you will
start to see problems. This could be as minor as missing error
message text or it could be more subtle. In general set the Oracle
    environment before starting PHP.
What about creating your scripts like:
    #!/bin/sh
    export ORACLE_HOME=/opt/app/oracle/product/9.2.0
    php ...-- cj

  • Home directory inaccessible

sometime in june or july of 2006, my battery & power cord died at the same time. shortly thereafter i would periodically use my roommate's power cord to power it up enough to turn it on, check it out, etc. one of those times after logging in i was brought to a default desktop with absolutely no access to my home folder. a friend from texas tried to help me via cell phone & AIM on another computer, but he said he needed the computer in front of him to really check into it. i can't remember exactly what we did other than make another admin account to try to access the home folder. we also messed around with the sparseimage(?) & i remember it being important but i have vague recollections of that.
cut to now, as i just bought a new battery & power cord & can finally (hopefully) put this thing to use again. now when i log in, the login window stays up with the color wheel spinning for quite a while until it finally logs me in (which is what's going on at the end of what i've included below). once i'm logged in, my finder folder pops up & tells me i do not have sufficient access privileges, safari cannot access my bookmarks & all files are inaccessible. i just ran a hardware test & everything is perfect. here is the main problem (i believe) in the system log, though i'm so mac simple it hurts:
Apr 14 21:10:14 localhost SystemStarter: Startup complete.
    Apr 14 21:10:21 localhost diskarbitrationd[85]: disk1s2 hfs DDEF93F3-E014-3477-83B2-3C0AC6B1613B beulah [not mounted]

(then it attempts that 19 more times)
my PMU was also reset everytime i powered my ibook on from the time my battery died until i put the new one in, which makes sense because of the dead battery but maybe has something to do with all of this???
so now i have a new battery & charger, but everything is still missing! did i waste my money? should i have been saving for a new macbook this whole time? can anything be done?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
From that log, it appears you have encountered some kind of disk error (not sure yet if it's hardware or software). It also looks like you had turned on File Vault to protect your home folder. When you do this, your entire home folder is stored inside an encrypted disk image. (That's how it's protected.) Because of the disk error, your computer can no longer "mount" or open this disk image. Because of this, Mac OS X created a new home folder for you and now you don't have access to your files. Your hard drive is "Journaled" which is a good thing, but unfortunately the journal doesn't seem to be able to be read. This could also be due to the disk error. The journal file may have helped repair the file(s) that might have let you open your disk image.
I would find your original install disks and we should run the Apple Hardware Test (to see if your disk error is a hardware problem) and if that passes we might use the Disk Utility on the install disk to attempt a software repair. If it's a hardware problem, it may not be simple to recover the files. Do you not have a recent backup of your important files?
I'm not sure how an "Archive and Install" will handle this damaged disk image. There is an option to "preserve" the current users and network settings, but it may only preserve the new (empty) home folder with the default settings.

  • Tar ditto cp or create disk image as a backup of /home directory

in your opinion, what would be the best method for backing up a /home directory to an external drive, possibly missing out the Library directory.
im looking at commands like tar, ditto, cp, and also thinking of a disk image. im less familiar with disk image. other suggestions?
im seeking a method, one or two lines, or basic shell script, that can be put into crontab
i would like to retrieve on a file, directory or recursive root (/home) basis.
and would also like incremental and full backups. aka. checks for newer file dates.
    any words of wisdom

I have been using rsync on Mac for about 5 years, but rsync was not included until I think 10.4. Before then you had to install it yourself. rsync works on all Linux based servers since it is a standard Linux command, however the Mac version needs a few adjustments due to the resource fork problem. Hopefully the rsync included with 10.5 will be fully compatible in all categories.

  • Portable Home Directory Incomplete Sync

    All,
I have just discovered a particularly disturbing issue with PHD. I recently had a user overwrite a file that was on his desktop and request a restore from backup. I did a search for the file on the backup that backs up all network home directories on the server and it was not found. I then checked the user's home directory on the server, and surprise it wasn't there either. Upon further checking, no files from the desktop had been synced to the server for over a month! This occurred while a regular sync has been happening on startup/logout and hourly the whole time and no errors have been logged.
Now being curious and worried I checked some other users and found that the same issue is occurring on about half of the other computers. But the specific problems vary from machine to machine. Some users were syncing properly except for some files on the desktop. Some were missing files that were several months old but had all the current ones. In a word, random.
Exception rules seems to be observed for the most part.
I am going to investigate this more but wondered if anyone else was seeing this sort of weirdness? I am suspecting that the problem may have coincided with the 10.5.4 Server upgrade, but this is just speculation at this point.
    Ideas?
    Bob

hi there, i am having the exact same issue with some portable accounts. we are running 10.5.4 server and 10.5.4 clients.
i have noticed rogue ACLS appearing now in server admin for leopard, as described in a previous post.
User = Everyone, Type = Deny, Permission = Custom, Applies To = This folder, All descendants.
strangely, some of our users have the rogue ACL and some don't.
even after deleting the ACL for the user, portable home syncing still does not work.
on the client it goes through the process and the blue bar shows you it checking folders and seemingly updating. the give away for me is following the apparently successful sync, when you click on the mobile directory icon in the menu bar the date has not updated and clearly upon checking with the network account, new data has not synced.
any ideas would be great... until now i have had to manually drag data from the client to the network folder by mounting the network folder over afp, then wipe the client and recreate the portable account... even then i am not sure how long syncing has been successful, though that has seemed to fix things.
i am not sure if something is breaking in the user's library on the portable account?
any insight would be most welcome.

  • /home directory write protected?

Maybe I'm missing something obvious. I just installed Solaris 2.8, or 8, or whatever it's called (having finally given up on 2.6) and it created the /home directory, owner and group root, with no write permissions. I mean, it is set to 555. When I try to chmod the thing, it says "WARNING: Can't change home". Why can't I change /home? I need to create home directories and profiles under there, to ape another machine that I'm cloning a test server after. Why can't user 'root' open up the permissions on this directory?
I did not install the gui openwindows interface because it is so awkward compared to the command line.
    Any help appreciated!

'/home' under solaris is not a regular "ufs" directory, it's one of the mountpoints for the solaris "automounter". See
the man pages automount(1M), automountd(1M) and the
    configuration files /etc/auto_master and /etc/auto_home
for more information how to configure the automounter.
