Home File Sharing

I am at uni and share a network with a lot of people, even though I have file sharing turned off on my computer and home sharing turned off in Itunes 9 I still get random people's libraries under the 'home sharing' section...

Make sure you have turned off both preferences. There is one to share your library, and one to look for other libraries. Sounds like you may still have the second one active.

  • Enabling 'File Sharing' on my Mac allows my Macintosh HD and Boot Camp to be visible and writeable on my home network. How can I turn this off, so that only folders/files I share are visible?

So I've been trying recently to get my MacBook Pro connected to my home network. There are two other desktop computers in the household, and I'd like to be able to connect to their shared folders, as well as allow them to access shared items on my MacBook Pro. I think I've read all the documentation regarding this issue on the Apple Support site. I do have administrator privileges on my Windows 7 computer.
Issues connecting from PC to Mac
A couple of days ago, I enabled SMB File Sharing on my MacBook Pro, and in addition to the already shared Public folder, I added another that resides within Movies. Then I went to my Windows 7 PC, and under Network, my MacBook Pro appeared. I double-clicked on it (I cannot remember if I was asked to enter my Mac user credentials; I think I was), and I saw the two shared folders: Public, and the Movies folder.
However, today I went back to my Windows 7 PC, accessed my MacBook Pro, entered username and password, and in addition to the two shared folders, both my Macintosh HD and Boot Camp HD appeared as shared folders, both fully writable. However, under File Sharing on my MacBook Pro, only the two shared folders (Public and Movies) appear in the Shared Folders list.
How can I prevent my Mac from sharing my entire partitions? How can I configure it so thatonly the folders I select to share are actually broadcasted across my home network? Also, it would be ideal if I can access these shared folders from my Windows 7 PC without having to enter my Mac user credentials.
Issues connecting from Mac to PC
I have a user account on my Windows 7 PC with the same name as my Mac, but with no password. When I try to connect to my PC from my Mac, the enter credentials dialogue pops up and asks me to either log-in as a Guest, or enter my User credentials.
The Guest account is disabled on Windows 7, and I assume that's I'm not able to log in as Guest (if it is possible to connect as a Guest without having to enable the Guest account on Windows 7, please let me know). Leaving the password field blank on the enter credentials dialogue tells me that it's incorrect (even though I don't have a password on my Windows 7 account).
Is it possible to access shared files and folders on my Windows 7 PC from my Mac without having to create a password protected account? If not, is it possible to create a password for the sake of accessing shared files, while not requiring it to log in to the account? I'm sorry, I know this last bit more falls under the category of Windows Help.

Sharing files from a Mac to a PC is a different animal.  I've never done it myself so you may want to repost a separate question on this topic.
From what I understand, in order to access files from a Mac on a PC, you must log in using your Mac username and password (no anonymous file sharing).  Since this is not very desirable from a security standpoint, Apple recommends creating a separate user account on the Mac that is dedicated to file sharing.  Give that account access only to the files/folders you want to share.  You can then give that user account name and password to your Windows users.

Hello, can anyone tell me how to share my home macbook pro to my imac in the office? I tried file sharing but never worked for me...appreciate if anyone can help!

I should have added to my posting (instead of using this "reply" -  it is the server passwork it is asking for and I have never known that I had one and assumed it was the passwork I always used for this type of thing.

  • Home folder File Sharing in Lion

Found the solution in another thread, but thought I would post it here to make it easier to find.
In Snow Leopard, I had File Sharing turned on for my home folder on both a Mini and a MBP. Both computers had the same username (admin). Since upgrading to Lion on both machines, all I got was "Connection failed" when trying to access the shared file. I could connect as a guest, or with the other accounts, but not with the user. Screen Sharing was working fine.
Seems the solution is pretty simple, once you know it, but rather couterintuitive. The Home Folder has to be removed from the Shared Folders list in File Sharing. In other words, it seems Lion doesn't need to be told that two home folders on different machines belong to the same user.
Thanks to kane_TO for the solution, found here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3193564?start=15&tstart=0

Too bad this solution is hard to find... Let's mark it as solved so others can find it easily.
Glad it saved you a clean install!

  • Home network file sharing

    Hi,
I've recently lost the ability to view my photo's,music etc on my laptop using a freesat box and have a feeling its been missing since i changed my home hub 3 for another home hub 3 a while ago. When setting these up i seem to remember an option on the installation to allow file sharing on my home network? If this is correct how do i find out if its switched on and turn it on if not. I've been into hub manager but just find it anywhere? Thanks in advance, fish.

If w7 then go to network ans sharing and make sure sharing is enabled

  • File sharing home network doesn't work

I have tried to activate sharing and ticked file sharing, but cannot access my imac from other macs in my home. Any tips?

Please carefully read Apple's advice letter on File sharing. It works perfectly assuming you set it up correctly, if you still hvae trouble figuring it out call AppleCare or visit your local Apple Store and speak to a Genius.

  • File sharing problem on home wifi network.

I am trying to get file sharing to work but its failing.
This is between 2 macs running mavericks on a home wifi network.
On my "sharing" computer I have set up file sharing in preferences.
Selected the folders and allowed access to everyone.
On the other computer I am using to look at shared files.
I open finder, goto network, I see the icon for the other computer.
I click on it and I get connection failed each time.
I have tried both ways, tried restarting etc.
    Each time the same problem.
    Any ideas please ?
    thanks

I've spent the past month fighting a similar problem and Apple Support was no help.  In my case, I could usually connect successfully IF the "sharing" computer was awake but I could never connect after it went to sleep.  After much frustration, I decided on a shotgun approach and tried every configuration combination that I could think of.  I found one combination that works reliably for me.  It's illogical and also completely contradicts Apple's instructions but results count.
In my case, I wanted to use my MacBook Pro (with Mavericks) to access files on my iMac (with Mavericks).
No clue if my solution will work for you but there's no harm in trying.
Go to your "sharing" computer and confirm that file sharing is "on" and DELETE all folders from the shared folders box.  That box should be totally blank.
Just below the "File Sharing: On" verbiage, jot down the address associated with the afp and smb commands.  It's 10.0.1.7 in my case, which I'll use in my example below.  If you don't see "afp" AND "smb" in that verbiage, go to Options and turn both command languages "on."
Go to the other computer and use "Go > Connect to Server" and enter smb://10.0.1.7 as the server address.  Of course, use your address instead of my 10.0.1.7.  Be patient.  Depending on whether or not my iMac is sleeping, a connection can take as long as twenty or thirty seconds.
Post back with results.  I'd like to know if this works for anyone else.
    Edit...
I just noticed your signature.  If you're really at 10.9.1, you might want to first update to 10.9.2.

  • Best Setup For Frequent File Sharing On Home Network?

    Hi guys,
I'm setting up an office at my house with multiple computers on a network, and we'll be sharing files over the network frequently. My question is, what is the best setup for this?.. Fastest transfer of files, stable wireless connection, etc.
All of the computers will be Macs (iMacs and Macbooks).
We'll be editing videos/photos on the computers. (Potentially large files)
Is the easiest setup just to have the main computer attached to a good router, setup file sharing on all other computers, and just do it that way?
Or would it be better to create some sort of NAS?
Also can someone reccomend a good router for this type of scenario?
    Thanks for any help given.

NAS is the right tool for this job.
It is expensive but the market leaders.. synology and QNAP have really been doing it for long time and the ability to do file store/sharing and most importantly backup in these is excellent. Pick the best you can afford.. and buy disks that are in the recommended list. ie the cheapest are not always the best.. indeed they seldom are.
Plan very carefully for rotation of USB drives (easy and cheap now with 4TB single drives). Rotate backups with offsite location on weekly basis.
I would buy a 4 disk case.. you can use 4x3TB which are the best value at the moment.. that gives you 9TB of storage.. plus redundancy for a dead drive.
Alternatives are using a Mac Mini as a server.. with a large stack of disks on it.. generally should be thinking thunderbolt if you want speed. Hideously expensive though for now.
You can buy an Extreme or TC.. either would work well. TC allows you easy TM backups without using your NAS..
Edit very large files on the computer. ie copy to computer.. edit.. copy back to the NAS.
Editing very large files over wireless.. not good. Multiply that by mutliple computers.. not even fair.
Copy a large project to the computer.. work on it.. copy back to the NAS.. in the meantime Time Machine should be able to take care of incremental backups.
There are heaps and heaps of solutions.. as long as it is logical and easy to you.. and covers what you need.
Don't skimp.. spending a $1000 for a NAS with disks.. plus extra for the backup disks.. that represents how many day's work for you plus anyone you have helping.. $$$$ ????
A mini as a server is a good alternative.. You don't need to run server OS.. but share files to the network. Very hard to build the capacity of the NAS though.
And a Mac Pro is now a joke without internal slots and cages for drives. (nice machine but wrong for this).
And Apple have nothing in between.. a short tower case.. been missing for a long long time.

  • I would like to download my iTunes library onto a mac mini running OS 10.4.11 (and iTunes version 9.0.2), or transfer it from my macbook air, running OS 10.7.5. Tried downloading direct from iTunes and file sharing, but neither is working.

Hello apple support community!  I'm trying to download my music purchases from iTunes onto my old Mac Mini.  It runs OS 10.4.11 and doesn't have the capacity to upgrade to a newer OS.  When I ask iTunes to check for available downloads, it says there are none.  I have tried updating the iTunes software (version 9.0.2) but it can't connect to the server, even though I am on a wireless network.  I've tried using home sharing and file sharing with my macbook air, but neither are working.  Grateful for any suggestions!!  The only thing I really use this mini for is music, so really hoping to be able to get my music purchases on there.  Thanks.

Thanks, Jim, for taking the time, but the reply is unfortunately vague in the exact area of my confusion!  "you need to copy that file to your new computer..."  Well, the Import/Export instructions make it seem as if the two computers should be able to communicate this file thru wifi, but that's the linkage I can't seem tocreate with Import/Export.  Should I instead email a copy to myself (thats what applecare suggested)?  Copy it to and from a thumb drive?  But then place the file where?  And the article was helpful, but should I be trying to move the Library file or the Library.xml file (as iTunes Help suggests)?  Sorry to be so clueless about it...I suppose I buy Apple in the hopes of not having to think about this stuff, which approach seems not to be serving me well. Thanks again for your time!

  • How can I allow network users to use File Sharing on 10.8 Server?

I am in the process of setting up a new OS X 10.8 Server. I have exported/imported the network users from my previous OS X 10.6.8 Server using Workspace Manager. I have re-entered the passwords of the users. I have existing clients running (stil logged in).
I have set up the File Sharing service in Server.app. I have several mount points. I have made the Users mount point available for home directories over AFP.
Now, the system administrator can connect to the server and get access to the file shares. So the basic file sharing system works.
Also: the users on a client can get there password verified (e.g. when unlocking screen protection) by the server. It is just AFP they can't get access to, while the system administrator account (OD /Local on the server) can be used. So, the password in the server is OK too. It seems to be a matter of privileges.
But no network user (OD user in directory /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 on the server) can get access. Where can I give network users privileges for File Sharing on the server?
I did try to add either the "Open Directory Users" group or a specific user that was imported into com.apple.access_afp. If I do that, there is partial success. I can connect to the server from the client with a user account other than system administrator from the server (but connecting is slow). But Mobile Home Sync does not work:

    Hi Gerben,
Try creating a brand new user, that's not imported and see if that works. Every user/group has a little gear in the Server.app/Users or Groups which allows specific access to specific services, perhaps filesharing is off in that section?
Is your DNS setup properly? Can you verify that clients can see the FQDN of your server?
After setting up the Users folder for mobilehomes, did you check whether the group and the separate users have access to filesharing? I am able to select the correct homefolder /Users and restrict the homefolder size.
    Goodluck!

  • How do I set up file sharing in Lion Server to work like file sharing in Lion Client?

I've just installed Lion Server on my home iMac to enable remote access via VPN to my home network.
When the iMac was running Lion Client (before the upgrade to server), and when File Sharing was enabled on the iMac; when other Macs on the LAN connected to the iMac via AFP, they were always able to connect to (share) any mounted external volumes (external USB or FireWire drives connected to the iMac). e.g.
Now that I've upgraded to Lion Server, when other Macs on the LAN connected to the iMac via AFP they are only able to connect to (share) the sharepoints listed in the File Sharing pane of Server.app. e.g.
Is there any way to set up File Sharing in Lion Server so that it works the same way as it does in Lion Client with respect to mounted external volumes? i.e. they are automatically shared? I know I can add each volume manually to File Sharing in Server.app but this gets tedious.
    Many thanks!

I normally have a Firewall enabled. I recently had to do an erase and install of Lion, followed by a one-by-one re-install of all of my software. One of the first things I did was to set up all of my System Preferences the way I like them; Turning the Firewall on was one of them. Later I noticed it was off and turned it on again. I had already set up sharing and was surprised to see the problem when I turned it back on.
As to why do I think it needs to be on. It is another part of my security layer.

  • Not just another file sharing thread......

Running a forum search gives me a plethora of file sharing threads. Most of these threads are a one answer type of question or a simple "Preferences>Sharing>File Sharing type of answer. I am no expert here, I learn something every time I visit, but I know the basics of file sharing after nearly 20 years of using macs. I have a network set up at my business and home that the computers share and am perfectly comfortable with the basics. I would really like a discussion about more creative options available to expand what I am currently using.
We have four macbook pros here. Two are personal only and the other two are business/personal. The two business MBP's are the ones we use the most, they are the primary machines which go from work to home. Right now they share files but up until now have really been set up for their own workstations for 2 different jobs. Now, we are starting to blend a little bit more of our work and we have had the need to share more files with the 2 computers. It's gotten to a point where basic file sharing isn't enough. The problem I am having is that both computers aren't always within airport range of each other, and both computers aren't always on or awake. So, it's become annoying to have to make sure the machine with the files I need is awake and nearby. So, we have recently started using dropbox to share files that way. The only issue with that is that many of our files are sensitive in nature and security is a bit of a risk. So, I am encrypting volumes with PGP and sharing the encrypted volumes via dropbox. So far it's not been an issue with having the same files open at the same time on both computers to avoid conflicts, I think we'll be ok for awhile. But as this data collection grows, I think it will become impractical. The thing I really like about using dropbox is that both computers don't need to be running at the same time since the files are stored locally and the changes are synced online. Even if I am traveling with one computer, I will usually have an internet connection so the files will update on my partner's computer when I make changes. This is the ultimate in portability and syncing. But like I said, it may become impractical when we put 30-40 Gigs of data up and we can't so easily keep track of what's open on which computer.
So, I would like to know what others do at work or home to share necessary files between multiple computers, other than typical OS X file sharing techniques. I know some applications have a checkout type of feature which might help for certain types of files, but I really want a simple universal setup that my partners and employees can learn without having to think about what type of file they are working with. I have quite a bit of server space I can use for storage of files online if it would help, but syncing would be an issue.
Dropbox may just be the best option for me to share and sync from multiple locations. It makes sense! I just hope some users here have some other recommendations that might work!

As to the PGP questions, as long as you have a file from the DropBox attached and are doing updates they are being sent to the copy on the DropBox. The updates are not all held until you unmount it.
Actually, I'm seeing otherwise. I just ran a test to be sure. I held a pgp disk open for about 5 minutes while copying files to and removing from it. I watched the dropbox folder and the upload activity the whole time and saw no activity or change. The moment I ejected the volume, network activity jumped up and the folder icon in my dropbox turned from synced to syncing in progress. It actually seems to work quite well. The problem I have with it is that if I need to use large files, it will take a long time to upload, because doesn't the whole encrypted volume need to be uploaded again for any minor changes? I haven't tested anything larger than about 20MB, so it's hard to tell.
The drop copy application might actually be quite useful if I were running a file server. I would certainly need an easy to use interface for the actual sharing of the files. If I do go that route, I would prefer for the ability to be able to lock files. As Allan said, drop copy doesn't have that feature, unfortunately.
So, there really isn't a well known solution for this type of application, huh? I may just have to reorganize my plan and stick to removable media for the shared data. If there is only one copy, it can't get mixed up. The only issue I have is when I'm not on premises, how do I share the data with the office? I suppose I will just have to have a better handle on what I need and make sure to have it with me and use dropbox or ftp to upload the files back and forth from office to user.
I just did a test with a decent size PGP virtual disk (125MB) I added one small 3MB jpg file to it and it did an incremental update to sync the file very quickly. I don't know how it's able to do it, but it's doing it. I would have thought it would have to update the whole disk every time, but I guess not. Maybe PGP and dropbox is a better solution that I ever imagined it to be.

  • File sharing between users on same macmini

Hi.  I just set up different user accounts for my two kids.  My account has some files on it that I would like to transfer to their accounts (school stuff, photos).  How do I share files between users?

Finder > help menu. Enter file sharing!
"Sharing files with others who use your computer
You can share files with others who use your computer by placing the files in the Public folder in your home folder. Anyone with an account on your computer can read or copy the items you put in your Public folder (except for your Drop Box folder, which only you can open).
To share files using your Public folder:
Copy the files you want to share into your Public folder, inside your home folder.
To give a copy of a file directly to another person, copy it to their Drop Box folder (inside their Public folder), where only they can see it.

  • File Sharing was working but now isn't

    Hey folks -
Some time ago I had quite a sruggle getting my MacBook Pro visible to my home network. I found this threa - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6198136 - and blew out the files and reset things and poof - there it was. For the rest of that day, and a few other times later in the week, I had no problem accessing the Mac from other computers and seending files happily back and forth.
Since then (February 08), I know that there have been a number of updates that I have allowed on the system. I have also just installed VMware Fusion to run and use Win XP while in the OS X environment.
I just discovered that while my other computers can see my MacBook - they can only see the printers share - and even there I don't see the actual printers, just the folder (but both printers are checked for sharing).
I have tried blowing things away again as in the link above and restarting, but no dice. I have unshared and reshared - but still no dice.
Under the Sharing / File Sharing / Advanced option I have made sure that the box for "Share files and folders using SMB" is checked. The default box for "Share files and folders using AFP" I have tried both checked and unchecked - this is the only Mac on the system - All other computers are Win XP systems, save for the server which is a CentOS 5 system. I can see the other computers in my network from the MacBook and I can connect to the shared folders on them - so I know I have local network access, but not the other way round.
I also have no idea how or why the Printer Share folder is showing up, but contains no actual printers. In VMware Fusion when I bring up XP Pro and try to install my networked HP 2300D by visiting it's URL, the ever so helpful IE tells me that it won't install the Active X component - so I thought I would just use the Printer share - and that's how I discoverd that the folder is there, but nothing is in it. Sure enough, the other systems in my network can see the MacBook, and they get a folder for the Printers - but nothing is in there.
Back in February this was working (file share and printer share) - no idea what changed or when it changed, but it is frustrating.
I have read through a number of other postings but none seem directly on point to this issue, so I have not found any solutions that have worked.
Hoping that someone can offer a suggestion that will work.

the same thing is with me too. me and my brother both have 2GB nanos, i got mine just after christmas. It kept doing this weird symboling thing, i couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. so, i took it back - to best buy. they gave me a new one. now i have this second one and it has been working fine until one day i asked my mom to plug it in and charge it for me. it still had about 1 red bar left. about 2 or 3 hours later, i went to unplugged it [safely unplugged it] and it had all my BROHTERS music updated on it [i always uncheck his songs first so they dont go on it, they WERE unchecked on itunes! i dont know how they got on!!!] so then i look, and it didnt even charge at all. it still had the same amount of energy. my brother rarely updates his ipod, just charges it. but, he did update it earlier that day, and since then...i cant CHARGE my ipod, i cant update it, nothing works. now i just tried plugging it in to charge, and it was on hold, so i slid the button so that it wouldnt be. There is still a little lock on the top left corner, like it shows when its locked. EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT LOCKED! it wont let me do anything. ive been trying to figure it out for HOURS, ive followed the 5 steps and NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK i need help so badly.
